Current management literature has §tried to keep pace with the rapid economic §development of China. But so far, little attention§has been paid to the internationalization of Mainland§Chinese enterprises. This is because, at the moment,§Mainland Chinese companies do not yet play a§significant role in global business. However, one can§be certain that the internationalization of Mainland§Chinese companies and their relevance for§international business will increase in the coming §years. Therefore, this dissertation with an analysis§of how Chinese companies in their quest for§internationalization will deal with cultural§differences and subsequent challenges and problems in§international business should be of great interest to§scientific researchers and the§general public alike.

Excerpt: Shanghai (Chinese: ; Shanghainese: Zĺnhae ; Mandarin pinyin: Shŕnghai ) is one of the largest cities by population in the People's Republic of China, and the world. The city is located in eastern China, at the middle portion of the Chinese coast, and sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Due to its rapid growth over the last two decades it has again become a global city, exerting influence over finance, commerce, fashion, technology and culture. Once a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to its favourable port location and was one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. The city then flourished as a centre of commerce between east and west, and became a multinational hub of finance and business in the 1930s. However, with the Communist Party takeover of the mainland in 1949, the city's international influence declined. In 1990, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in an intense re-development of the city, aiding the return of finance and foreign investment to the city. There are disputes as to exactly how the name should be interpreted, but official local histories have consistently said that it signifies 'The upper reaches of the sea'. Due to the changing coastline, Chinese historians have concluded that in t

Guanxi has long been an important characteristic of conducting business in mainland China and since the evolution of the Chinese market economy began to gather pace in the 1980s the characteristics and antecedents of producing guanxi in the State Owned Organisations have begun to evolve. This study in south-west China investigates the evolution of organisational guanxi in Chinese state owned enterprises and in an operational context focuses on the Roaring Dragon Hotel and other organisations in Yunnan Province. Specifically, three main topics are investigated: the roots and characteristics of organisational guanxi, the role of the danwei in the evolution of this type of guanxi and organisational guanxi in operation. Written between 1999 and 2005, Dr. Stephen Grainger investigates the changes occurring to the organisational guanxi phenomenon at a critical time in Chinese history. Arguments regarding the declining significance of guanxi are analysed and compared with a number of new conclusions and comparisons being formulated.
