Muzyka na CD

The prolific Domenico Alberti squeezed a surprising number of works out of a short and eventful life, achieving fame across Western Europe, particularly for the socalled ‘Alberti bass’, an arpeggiated style of left‐hand keyboard playing. Yet his presentday reputation does not equal these heights, his fame largely limited today to his Eight Sonatas. This recording puts this to rights, showcasing Alberti as a composer who deserves to be remembered for centuries to come, as a musical poet possessed of remarkable invention and imagination. Alberti’s compositions display the simplicity and sensitivity of Clementi, the vigour of Mozart and, in the briefest of moments, an almost Schubertian or Chopinesque pre‐Romanticism. His keyboard compositions are generally individual movements or twopart toccatas or sonatas, the whole full of melodic echoes and intentional reworkings, which form intriguing bridges between the pieces. The three distinct periods in the composer’s output of keyboard music are mirrored here by the use of organ, fortepiano and harpsichord (all of which Alberti would have had to hand in his day) – corresponding also to the period practice of ‘playing on all manner of instruments’, with individual pieces often not tied down to a specific instrument. This combination adds a Talented keyboardist and international award‐winner Manuel Tomadin has a particular interest in Renaissance and Baroque music and historical organs. He brings all of his expertise to bear on this superb album. This 4CD set contains the complete keyboard music by Domenico Alberti, a First Recording! Domenico Alberti lived a short but very productive life, from 1710‐1740. He was famous as a composer, cembalo player and singer (the world famous castrato Farinelli heard him sing, and recognised in him a fearful rival). Alberti claim to fame is his “discovery” of the so-called Alberti-bass: the accompanying left hand chord broken in a certain way (like c-g-e-g etc). This figure forms the basis of the Viennese classical style, and was used by all composers of keyboard sonatas and sonatinas. Alberti’s Sonatas and Toccatas are in two movements, the first an allegro in free form, followed by a mellow andante in arioso style. In order to achieve maximum variety Manuel Tomadin performs these works on three instruments: an historic organ (1773 Francesco Dacci organ), a harpsichord and a fortepiano. Manuel Tomadin already recorded successfully for Brilliant Classics, notably the Leipziger Chorale by Bach (BC94456). Recorded in Italy in 2013 and 2014. Contains liner notes written by the artist in Italian and English. Contains a biography of the artist. Contains a full organ specification.

As the composer, conductor, scholar and provocateur explains in his own notes, this is Baroque music for our time. Federico Maria Sardelli's long experience researching and editing the music of Vivaldi leaves him perhaps ideally placed to recreate such music in his own image, which he does here with chamber, orchestral and vocal music that is less a pastiche, in which identity is obscured, than a defiant recreation of a past age. 'It's important for me to point out that I don't compose "neo-Baroque" music, but Baroque music. It's not a question of revisiting a musical idiom, or being influenced by it. What I do is breathe new life into a style that's dead so that it regains its own original language and adheres to its own original criteria, expressing vibrant new ideas that are keeping with its identity.'As his fellow composer Carlo Boccadoro remarks, the result 'is rather like filling antique containers with sparkling coloured liquids so that they take on an entirely new aspect; or looking at certain Renaissance portrayals that seem slightly distorted until they are viewed from exactly the right angle... Like optical illusions themselves, his music is both real and immaterial, built from solid counterpoint and born aloft by airy lightness. Sardelli subtly eludes the whole subject of musical idiom so central to all forms of contemporary music, fully aware of his own unique and inimitable individuality.'The performers on this unique disc are experienced performers of the Baroque style, playing in 'historically informed' conditions -- a further paradox that enriches this time-bending recording. Under the baton of Sardelli, Modo Antiquo appears regularly at major international festivals and concert halls. Its discography of more that 40 titles includes many world premiere recordings.Other information:- New recording made in 2013.- Another obscure baroque composer dug up from the dusty archives of some Italian library? No! What I do is breathe new life into a style that's dead so that it regains its own original language and adheres to its own original criteria, expressing vibrant new ideas that are keeping with its identity."- Sardelli's Baroque music is sparkling, luminous, witty, deeply feeling, and extremely well crafted: a true "discovery"!- Performed by his own Modo Antiquo, and a line-up of excellent soloists of international renown. And of course conducted by himself..- Booklet notes including tributes to Sardelli from the Vivaldi scholar Michael Talbot.

MARAIS: PIECES DE VIOLE, BOOK V Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

It is surprising that so little is known about Marin Marais today, as he could be considered one of the most important French composers of the Baroque period. Born in 1656, the son of a shoemaker, Marais spent his entire life in Paris. His musical career began when he joined the choir of the Sainte-Chapelle, but when his voice broken he decided to learn the viol, studying with the renowned bass viol player Sainte-Colombe, who had a profound influence on the young Marais. Marais went on to enter the royal orchestra and the orchestra of the Académie Royale de musique, where he performed and studied composing under Jean-Baptiste Lully. He was hailed as the greatest bass viol player of his time, and is said to have played the viol 'like an angel'.Marais's vast output for the viol (over 800 pieces!) is astonishingly varied, original and affecting ? no other composer has written so many works of such high quality for the instrument. The fifth and final book of Pieces de viole showcases Marais's art at its most mature and sophisticated, and includes a wider range of musical forms and techniques than the previous four books. Although the fifth book contains many of the conventional dance forms that listeners would expect to hear in a Baroque suite, there are many remarkable descriptive pieces that justify the claim that Marais was the first composer of programme music. A particularly striking example is the ?Tableau de l'Opération de la Taille? from the final Suite: an extraordinarily detailed musical depiction of an operation to remove a gall stone that the composer underwent! These captivating suites are brought to life in vivid performances by acclaimed chamber musicians and early music specialists Rainer Zipperling, Ghislaine Wauters and Pieter-Jan Belder.Other information:- Recorded in 2013.- Little is known of the life of Marin Marais, but he is unquestionably one of the most important and original composers of the French Baroque. His public ?breakthrough? came with the blockbuster film ?Tous les matins du monde?, which features his beautiful works for the viol.- Marais left a vast output of suites for the viol, the viola da gamba, in total 5 books. This new recording presents the 5th book, the most daring and original of all. In these suites of dance forms he introduces the first known examples of ?program music?, music depicting non-musical ideas or events. One suite for instance describes an operation to remove a gall stone, which includes the binding of the patient and his painful screaming!- Excellent performances by one of the best known viola da gamba players of the moment, Rainer Zipperling, seconded by harpsichord veteran Pieter-Jan Belder.- Includes booklet notes and biographies of the artists.

Distler: Die Weihnachtsgeschichte Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

The revival of Protestant church music after the First World War marked the renewal of pieces available for direct use in services and represented a search for a new scale of values. Admired in church music circles but persecuted by the Nazis for his 'degenerate' music, Hugo Distler was one of its foremost cultivators, imbuing his choral music with pre-Classical forms to create a distinctive style that would be accessible to the 'common' man.The tender Weihnachtsgeschichte Op.10, composed in 1933, is one of Distler's many works adhering this criteria and which narrates the traditional Christmas story according to the gospels of St Luke and St Matthew. Right from the start, in the first of two motets which frame the piece, the composer conjures up complex modal harmonies that evoke ancient, dark images, and throughout the composition (written for four soloists and four-part a cappella chorus) he recalls the musical language of the great Baroque composer Heinrich Schütz, drawing on his use of word-painting and imitative counterpoint but all the time embellishing the work with new techniques such as syncopated rhythm and harmonic dissonance. The free recitative style of the soloists is particularly affecting -- here the note heads without heads encourage the use of natural speech rhythms, reflecting once again the influence of Schütz through his frequent close matching of music to intonation.Distler's life came to a tragic end when, in the face of ever increasing persecution in Berlin and the constant threat of recruitment into the military service, he committed suicide in 1942. Multiple repeated phrases in Weihnachtsgeschichte such as 'Zu Bethlehem im jüdischen Lande' ('To Bethlehem in the Jewish countries') are testament to the composer's resolve to stand true to his faith, despite the persecution that it ultimately aroused. This recording, featuring a stellar solo cast ably supported by the Thomanerchor Leipzig -- one of the most respected choirs in the Europe -- can only increase our appreciation for a composer whose work represents an important chapter in sacred music history.Other information:- Hugo Distler was one of the most important composers of choral music in the first half of the 20th century. A Protestant, he mainly used his native language German. His music reaches back to the great German polyphonists like Schütz, imbuing it with polymodal and polyrythmical elements, creating a unique, introverted, ascetic but deeply felt language, which touches the heart. His personal troubles and the repression of his music by the Nazis who though it 'degenerate', led to his suicide in 1942, a tragic end of a highly talented composer and human being.- Excellent performance by the world famous Thomanerchor Leipzig and superb German soloists.- Booklet contains German and English notes on the music.

Pietro Antonio Locatelli was one of the most important composers of the Baroque period, being a particularly celebrated composer of violin repertoire. His collection L'arte del violino contains 12 violin concertos with 24 caprices in the first and last movement of each, allowing for astonishing displays of virtuosity. He was born in Bergamo, Italy, in 1695, and at the age of 16 went to Rome to study the violin. Despite the popular myth that he was taught by Corelli, it's unlikely that he ever made contact with him; however, he certainly studied with members of the Corelli 'school', improving both his compositional skills and his performing technique. Although details of the composer's life are somewhat sketchy, it's clear Locatelli was linked to some of the most influential aristocrats of the time. At some point he was under the protection of Monsignor Camillo Cybo, an advisor to the Pope; at another point, he was granted the title of 'virtuoso da camera' by the Habsburgian governor of Mantua Philipp von Hesse-Darmstadt. Just these fleeting details are enough to tell us of Locatelli's growing reputation for virtuosic playing; in Munich in 1727 he was awarded 12 gold florins for a performance, and he pops up again in Germany in 1728, receiving money for services to the court in Kassel. Eventually, business-savvy Locatelli ended up in Amsterdam, where the music publishing industry had taken off. Thanks to the composer's meticulous attention to the publication of his works, and the fact that he was legally required to give copies to the Leiden University library, we are left with excellent manuscripts of his Opp. 1-9. His business acumen must have paid off, as his estate at the time of his death comprised large collections of works of art and old books, indicating an impressive prosperity. Locatelli was the forerunner of 19th-century virtuosity, and the works on this release reveal a composer eager to exploit the sound of the violin. As well as writing technically demanding solo passages, however, he was also an inventive writer for the supporting instruments, demonstrating a superb knack for fugal writing, and intensifying the texture of the concertino group with the addition of a viola, something unusual for the time. This release is an excellent opportunity to become better acquainted with Locatelli and the wealth of music he composed throughout his life. Demonstrating the versatility of Locatelli's writing, this set includes his Op.5 Trio Sonatas 'o due violini o due flauti' for the violin as well as the flute, allowing the listener to experience the composer's florid writing in two very different interpretations. Igor Ruhadze and his group Ensemble Violini Capricciosi have dedicated themselves to recording Locatelli's works for some years now. Careful research along with a genuine enthusiasm for the overlooked composer's works have led to a fine set of recordings, previously described by Gramophone as 'brilliantly and at times breathtakingly performed'. The release also includes new recordings of the composer's Concerti Grossi Opp. 1 & 7 and Introduzioni Teatrali Op.4, as well as the haunting Sinfonia funebre, a work to mark the death of an unknown woman in Rome. The vibrant playing of the Ensemble Violini Capricciosi is complemented by Musica ad Rhenum, led by highly acclaimed flautist Jed Wentz, who perform the Flute and Trio Sonatas. This release represents excellent value for money, at only EUR30.00 for 21CDs of listening pleasure; a compelling and masterful accomplishment just waiting to be enjoyed. The first and only Complete Locatelli Edition ever! Locatelli, like many of his contemporaries, moved abroad and settled in Amsterdam/The Netherlands, concertising as a violinist (and a "devil" he was as a performer!), and founding a flourishing publishing house. Locatelli composed in the tradition of the Italian Baroque, in the well known forms of the Concerto Grosso, Solo Concerto and Trio Sonata. His style is inventive, flamboyant, and extremely virtuoso. His violin sonatas and concertos still present a daunting challenge even to today's violinists. Russian violinist Igor Ruhadze was trained in his native Moscow as a virtuoso on the modern violin. However, his interest took him into early music, playing with such ensembles as Musica ad Rhenum, Jed Wentz and others. His solid technique enables him to tackle the often fearful difficulties of Locatelli's music with ease, charm and brilliance. His ensemble Violini Capricciosi play on original instruments, and follow the Historically Informed Performance Practice. Also included the two sets of Flute Sonatas, played by Jed Wentz, one of the most respected and celebrated flutist of Early Music. Linernotes written by the artists. A unique set, brand new recordings, performances which received universal critical acclaim for its dazzling virtuosity, style awareness and the sheer joy of making music! Recorded in The Netherlands between 1995 and 2014 Contains detailed notes on the works

Hindemith: Complete Piano Sonatas

Książki & Multimedia > Muzyka

Opis - The "true amalgam of ecstasy and reason" which Glenn Gould found within Paul Hindemith"s music is abundantly evident in the three piano sonatas which he wrote fairly quickly in 1936, following the artistic success but deep personal wound created by the first performances of his masterpiece, Mathis der Maler, which was banned by the Nazis as soon as it had been heard. Inevitably these sonatas are more compact and restrained in expression, but their novel forms still enclose furious marches and impassioned laments within the wrong-note counterpoint that was Hindemith"s characteristic tone of voice. The first is the most substantial of the three sonatas, a five-movement work inspired by a Holderlin poem. The second is more agile and delicate in form, most clearly derived from Baroque models, somewhat ironic in tone and concluding with a witty Rondo. The third is perhaps the most lucid of the triptych, in which Beethoven"s influence is writ large, from the throwaway subject of the first movement to the strenuous fugue of the finale, which is prefaced by an imposing slow movement with the tragic pulse of a funeral march. This is Maurizio Paciarello"s debut recording for Brilliant Classics, but he has made previous recordings of repertoire from Kuhlau to Respighi. This Hindemith CD benefits from his wide study of historically informed performance values from Baroque and Classical times onwards, including teaching from Paul Badura-Skoda, and performances of Beethoven"s music on original Broadwood instruments. Paul Hindemith"s piano sonatas span his whole creative life, and may be seen as a cycle of creative and emotional development. Hindemith?s musical language is based on the 19-th century classics, and is imbued with his highly personal use of elements from the Baroque, polytonality and jazz. Pianistically highly challenging and virtuoso, they are true masterworks, and deserve to be played more in concerts. Italian pianist Maurizio Paciariello, schooled by Aldo Ciccolini and Paul Badura-Skoda and Prize winner of the ARD Competition, is a champion of rare repertoire and specialist on period instruments. Berlioz: La Damnation de Faust Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

Although little appreciated in his native France for many years, Hector Berlioz now safely resides among the giants of the 19th century's musical scene. The composer's vocal output is extensive and includes several operatic works; written during 1845--46, La Damnation de Faust forms the subject of this engaging 2CD release. The work grew out of Berlioz's encounter with Goethe, one of the great influences -- together with Shakespeare -- on the composer's creativity. A hybrid composition which employs just four principal singers and a chorus, as befits a 'concert' setting, La Damnation de Faust is too theatrical to work in this guise -- and, alas, too impractical to be staged successfully. Nevertheless it remains an intensely dramatic piece: listen out for the violent orchestral outpourings of the Hungarian March as well as the 'Ride to Hell', which leads to a terrible vision of Pandemonium. Residing among the composer's most intense and thrilling music, the work features many ballet episodes and includes Marguerite's song -- one of the greatest French operatic scenes. 'Inbal has a fine ear for Berlioz's orchestration, matched by sensitive recording, so that time and again details spring into dramatic life...a distinctive and intelligent performance... No lover of the work should miss hearing it.' Gramophone, July 1991Other information:- Recorded in 1989, when the great Israeli conductor Eliahu Inbal spent a remarkably successful and fruitful period in Frankfurt with its orchestra, resulting in several impressive symphonic cycles, notably the legendary complete Mahler Symphonies.Apart from the great artistic value of these recordings, the special one-point recording technique used by the Denon engineers is still a marvel of natural recorded sound.- A superb release, formerly issued on the prestigious Denon label, of the "dramatic legend" La Damnation de Faust, written (both music and libretto) by Hector Berlioz, after the famous "Faust" of Goethe.- Wonderful soloists: Maria Ewing, Denes Gulyás, Robert Lloyd and the young Christiane Oelze.- Includes booklet notes on the composer and the music.

Poetic Features of Punk Rock Lyrics GRIN Verlag

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, printed single-sided, grade: 1,3, Bielefeld University, 21 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Punk rock and the punk movement had a powerful impact on society and pop music. People influenced by it regarded crudeness and simplicity as a chance to express themselves, the constraints of conventions that demanded conformity and accuracy left behind. While breaking with those traditions concerning music, life style and attitude was at first the main motivation in the late 1970s, the movement emerged for many people to a force propagating virtues like equality, justice and social responsibility. The mixture of music always forcing attention and the prevalent notion of urgency in the lyrics proved a perfect basis for a countless number of artists to express vigorously protest, feelings ranging from despair to joy or just their personal perception of their environment. Along the history of American poetry the poems showed exactly those features, offering a channel to express oneself. The way poets express themselves just changed. It required centuries and many different stages to develop for example from the puritan style and fixed rhyme pattern of Anne Bradstreet s works to the flowing free verse of Walt Whitman expressing a fervent patriotism, which is again a great contrast to Allen Ginsberg s beat poetry, which features a very critical attitude towards America. Regarding the Native Americans poetry, which deals in many cases with the balance between humans and their environment or appears in the form of vocables, as an additional facet, these developments illustrate how wide the range of style has already been when comparing it to later forms of poetry, and that always a breaking with conventions, accompanied by enthusiastic adherents on the one hand and sceptics on the other hand, took place. Analyzing a selection of punk rock lyrics by American artists I want to show that they possess features that are typical for classical poetry, whereas the term classical poetry will represent the traditional understanding of poetry, which does not include punk rock lyrics. Intertextual elements as well as formal aspects will be pointed out and compared to similar cases in works of different poets that are supposed to serve as a kind of measuring staff, which will help to show where congruence is present and where it is not.

Happiness: A History Grove Press / Atlantic Monthly Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Darrin M. McMahon's sweeping new book, chronicling the evolution of happiness over two thousand years of Western culture and thought, argues that our modern belief in happiness -- that happiness is a natural right -- is a relatively recent development. It is a product of a dramatic revolution in human expectations carried out since the eighteenth century. Central to the development of Christianity, ideas of happiness assumed their modern form during the Enlightenment, when men and women were first introduced to the novel prospect that they could -- in fact should -- be happy in this life as opposed to the hereafter. Ultimately, the Enlightenment's recognition of happiness as a motivating ideal led to its consecration in the Declaration of Independence and France's Declaration of the Rights of Man. McMahon follows this great pursuit through to the present day, showing how our modern search for happiness continues to generate new forms of pleasure, but also, paradoxically, new forms of pain. In the tradition of works by Peter Gay and Simon Schama, "Happiness" draws on numerous sources, including art and architecture, poetry and scripture, music and theology, literature and myth to offer a sweeping intellectual history of man's most elusive yet coveted goal.
