England and the English, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from England and the English, Vol. 1 of 2 It is only to express my thanks to certain kind correspondents for the assistance they have afforded me, than I shall delay the Reader from the work now before him. To one gentleman of the highest scientific attainments and reputation I am indebted for many suggestions, of which I have availed myself in my brief view of the "State of Science" - to another gentleman, qualified, perhaps before all men living, to judge profoundly of the philosophy of Bentham, I am also indebted for considerable aid in the sketch of that remarkable writer's moral and legislative codes which will be found in the Appendix to the second volume; and to the taste and critical knowledge of a third gentleman I owe many obligations in the chapter devoted to the survey of the "State of the Arts" amongst us at this time. To the last gentleman my acknowledgements are perhaps the greater, because he has suffered me, in his general approbation of my theories, to apply a part of his knowledge to some conclusions with which he does not wholly agree. Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Brehm's Life of Animals, Vol. 1 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Brehm's Life of Animals, Vol. 1: A Complete Natural History for Popular Home Instruction and for the Use of Schools Brehm's immortal book, "Life of Animals," is one of the most fascinating works ever written upon natural history. The author devoted his life to a study of animate nature, seeking out the creatures in their wild state and making most intimate acquaintance their habits, traits and characteristics. Many years were spent by him in the great forests, where he seemed to court danger in order that he might arrive at knowledge of the truth. The results of his studies and observations are shown in this masterly production, which, while detailing all the facts essential to scientific knowledge, clothes his narrative in descriptive details that hold the attention of old and young as strongly as the most thrilling romances. The new and revised edition of this work, carefully corrected and brought down by the scholarly Dr. William Haacke and Professor Pechuel-Loesche, the latter no less distinguished as an explorer than as a naturalist, has passed under the hands of Richard Schmidtlein, the celebrated German naturalist and author, who has preserved in it all the rich and splendid material of the original, but has omitted details and descriptions of a strictly scientific nature, the object being to furnish a book for popular home instruction and for the use of schools. Professor Schmidtlein, in his scholarly and entertaining revision, made such changes as the progress of modern science demanded and perfected his work in a manner to call forth the highest praise from critics everywhere. The present edition has been translated from the German by linguists of distinction who have in the happiest manner transferred to the English tongue the rich, exuberant and fascinating style of the original; while competent scholars have carefully revised the translation, making only such changes as were calculated to bring it closer to the mind of the English reader. These changes are either inclosed in brackets, or are set in smaller type than the body of the work. The short sketches introduced under the pictures, independent of the text, are also the work of the American editors. This edition is, therefore, practically a complete work brought down to date, containing substantially all the matter to be found in Brehm's "Life of Animals," adapted to meet and reach the popular taste, and rendered into English in such manner as to make it clear and intelligible to every one, the child as well as the adult, only those animals being omitted which are little known and of interest to none but specialists. The book is designed to meet in the highest degree a great popular need, technical terms and long scientific descriptions being avoided, whenever possible, and it is invaluable as a work of reference and of study. It not only contains narratives of Brehm's exciting personal experiences and observations in forest and field, but also those of all other leading naturalists and explorers of the world, whose intimate touch with animate nature inspired them to speak in words that glow with interest and that thrill the reader. A most attractive feature of the present work is the superb illustrations, which include, with few exceptions, all that are contained in Brehm's complete work, and also numerous additions designed and executed at great expense and including the best efforts of the greatest artists in delineation of animal life. The work of these distinguished artists, supplemented with faithful mechanical reproductions, has resulted in the presentation of the various animals precisely as they appear in a state of nature, the figures being of a size to enable the student to obtain a most accurate knowledge of each creature, while parents and teachers can be assured that nothing is exaggerated, but that every detail is given with absolute fidelity.

Manual of the Infusoria, Vol. 1 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Manual of the Infusoria, Vol. 1: Including a Description of All Known, Flagellate, Ciliate, and Tentaculiferous Protozoa, British and Foreign, and an Account of the Organization and Affinities of the Sponges It is now some ten years since the author, then but a recruit in the ranks of practical microscopists, elected to concentrate his attention upon the group of organisms that form the subject of this treatise. At a very early period of his investigations, formidable obstructions to substantial progress in the course mapped out, presented themselves in connection not only with the very backward condition of the literature of this country relating to this topic, but by reason also of the exceedingly wide and scattered area of Continental bibliography that had to be explored and sifted before it was possible to arrive at any adequate idea of the state of contemporary knowledge concerning almost any given type that might be the subject of examination. It was the recognition of, and continual contact with these difficulties that suggested to the author the advantages that would accrue both to himself and all English-speaking microscopists, from the compilation of a treatise, brought up to date, that should contain a concise description of the innumerable species known to science whose descriptions were distributed throughout many scattered sources, and that led to the efforts, now carried into execution, to supply this desideratum. It was in the first instance suggested that this Manual should be based upon the same lines as the, at the time, only other English treatise devoted to the subject, 'A History of the Infusoria,' by Andrew Pritchard, the fourth and last edition of which was published so long since as the year 1861; that it should include in a similar manner an account of the several distinct groups of microscopical organisms known as the Rotifera, Desmidiaceae, Diatomaceae, and other Protophytes which form, as being a reproduction of Ehrenbergs Infusionsthiere so conspicuous a feature of Mr. Pritchards book. It soon became apparent, however, that to compass so comprehensive a task with any degree of efficiency would extend the size of this treatise far beyond convenient limits, and that indeed more than sufficient material for a work on the same scale as the one above-named had accumulated in connection with the Infusoria in the most limited and restricted sense as represented by the Flagellate, Ciliate, and Tentaculiferous Protozoa. Principles of Zoology, Vol. 1 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Principles of Zoology, Vol. 1: Touching the Structure, Development, Distribution, and Natural Arrangement of the Races of Animals, Living and Extinct With Numerous Illustrations The design of this work is to furnish an epitome of the leading principles of the science of Zoology, as deduced from the present state of knowledge, so illustrated as to be intelligible to the beginner. No similar treatise now exists in this country, and, indeed, some of the topics have not been touched upon in the English language, unless in a strictly technical form, and in scattered articles. On this account, some of the chapters, like those on Embryology and Metamorphosis, may, at first, seem too abstruse for scholars in our common schools. This may be the case, until teachers shall have made themselves somewhat familiar with subjects comparatively new to them. But so essential have these subjects now become to a correct interpretation of philosophical zoology, that the study of them will hereafter be indispensable. They furnish a key to many phenomena which have been heretofore locked in mystery. Being intended for American students, the illustrations have been drawn, as far as possible, from American objects: some of them are presented merely as ideal outlines, which convey a more definite idea than accurate sketches from nature; others have been left imperfect, except as to the parts especially in question; a large proportion of them, however, are accurate portraits from original drawings. Popular names have been employed as far as possible, and to the scientific names an English termination has generally been given; but the technical terms have been added, in brackets, whenever misunderstanding was apprehended. Definitions of those least likely to be understood, may be found in the Index. The principles of Zoölogy developed by Professor Agassiz in his published works have been generally adopted in this, and the results of many new researches have been added. Principles of Political Economy, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy, Vol. 1 Our literature is rich enough in works on the principles of Political Economy. So far as the translator is informed, however, it possesses none in which the science is treated in accordance with the historical method. We may therefore venture to express the hope that this translation will till a place hitherto unoccupied in the literatures of England and America, and fill it all the more efficiently and acceptably, as Professor Roscher is the founder and still the leader of the historical school of Political Economy. Were this the only recommendation of our undertaking, it would not be a useless one. But a glance at Professor Roscher's book will convince even the most hasty reader that its pages fascinate by their interest and are rich in treasures of erudition which should not remain inaccessible to the English student from being locked up in a foreign tongue. The present translation has received, throughout, the revision of the author, and should any imperfections remain in the rendering of his thought into English, the blame is certainly not his, for his revision has been most minute. The three appendices have been supplied by Professor Roscher expressly for this edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Acharya Vagbhata's Astanga Hridayam Vol 1 Purnarogya Holistic Healing Centre

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

For students of Ayurveda who are unable to read Sanskrit, learning the intricacies of this subtle and complex healing science is challenging, if not impossible. Without the ability to transfer the principles expounded in the ancient texts into practical application according to the time, place, and person being treated, proper results cannot be achieved. During his own study of Ayurveda, Dr. Sanjay Pisharodi discovered some of the available English translations to be incomplete and inaccurate. Now, as the founder of the Purnarogya Holistic Health Care & Research Pvt Ltd, an institution dedicated to preserving, promoting, and propagating the teachings of the Ayurvedic texts, he presents the most authentic English translation of the Ażżażga Hżdayam to date. Because it is the most practical, concise, and clinical in its presentation and contains the essential points from all the great classics, this text serves as an excellent teaching tool. Through exacting transliteration and translation of every word and verse, Dr. Pisharodi provides unparalleled access to the knowledge imparted in the Ażżażga Hżdaya, including the enriching commentary. This text acts as a vital bridge connecting international students of Ayurveda with the ancient sages and great teachers of this fascinating healing tradition.

Animal Kingdom, Vol. 1 of 4 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Animal Kingdom, Vol. 1 of 4: Arranged According to Its Organization, Serving as a Foundation for the Natural History of Animals, and an Introduction to Comparative Anatomy In presenting this version of the "Animal Kingdom" of the celebrated Cuvier to the British public, the Translator feels assured that he has only acted in compliance with the wishes of the most intelligent portion of the community, inasmuch as the great deficiency in our language of a complete work in this grand department of Natural History is thus supplied in a manner that it is impossible to excel. It is essential for the reader to understand that the attempts hitherto made by English authors to enrich British scientific literature with the labours of Cuvier, have been confined to the translation of the first edition of the "Regne Animale," which made its appearance so far back as the year 1816. With respect to that translation, it is not necessary that we should dwell upon it farther than to observe, that it is the version of a work which may now be deemed to be completely superseded. The great French author himself, indeed, has acknowledged the imperfections of his first edition, as compared with the last, which is now enriched with the results of labours, whereby, during the interval of twelve years, an immense progress is declared by Cuvier to have been effected in this science. It is scarcely necessary to add, that no part of those labours, and no portion of that improvement, failed to be examined by this indefatigable naturalist. His connection with the government of France, his reputation throughout Europe, and his consequent unbounded facilities of communication with fellow-labourers in all quarters of the globe, gave to Cuvier opportunities of procuring information of new facts, or corrections of former errors, such as could not be accessible to almost any other individual. From considering these facts, the reader will not fail to conclude that a difference, to no small amount, must necessarily exist between the former and the latter edition of the "Animal Kingdom;" nor will he, upon due examination, be prepared to deny that the latter is essentially a new and distinct work, from the number of alterations and improvements which have been incorporated with it. Cuvier records, with die most grateful expressions, his sense of the value of the information derived by him from the vast number of faithfully executed figures in Natural History which were supplied by recent travellers. The difficulties presented in the arrangement of the synonymes in the nomenclature of animals were also found by our great author very seriously diminished when he came to prepare the second edition of his "Regne Animale."
