Little is known about Robert de Visée's life. The facts that have survived, however, reveal an illustrious career: as well as playing the guitar, lute, theorbo and viola da gamba, the Frenchman was also a singer and composer, and in 1680 he entered the court of Louis XIV as a chamber musician -- a role that eventually led to his appointment as the king's guitar master in 1719.This recording is based on a selection of works taken from De Visee's collection of suites published in 1716, the Pieces de Théorbe et de Luth mises en partition, dessus et basses -- music which, for its time and place, was typically stylish, embodying the particular qualities of gentility, grace and elegance. The release forms an engaging counterpart to the first volume in the series (94154), and the trio of Italian musicians are here joined by harpsichordist Manual Tomadin, whose fine continuo playing adds another timbral dimension to the intimate scoring of recorder, theorbo and viola da gamba.Other information:- New recording, recorded in June 2012, Ancelle della Carita, Rome.- Robert de Visée (1655-1733) spent most of his musical life at the court of Versailles, where he was a chamber musician for Louis XIV (the Sun King) and the court guitarist for Louis XV (he had to play the guitar when the King went to bed..).- De Visée wrote extensively for the lute and the theorbe, a selection from his 'Pieces de Theorbe et de Lute mises en partition, dessus et basse' is presented on this recording. The writing for several voices and basso continuo invites for the use of several instruments (not specified in the score), to embellish and 'pimp up' the single bass and treble line, with recorders, theorbo, viola da gamba and harpsichord.- Excellent performances by the Early Music ensemble around Manuel Staropoli, who received much praise for their earlier De Visée recording for Brilliant Classics (94154), among others a 5-star in Diapason.- Including liner notes written by a specialist musicologist, artist biographies and information on the instruments used....

La Stravaganza Op.4 Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

The latest in Brilliant Classics? selection of Vivaldi releases, this vivid and inventive collection can be considered the first true example of the genre later to be connected so strongly with the ?Prete Rosso?: the violin concerto. La Stravaganza gains its extravagant title from its bold modulations, subtle melodies and unusual intervals. Having set the precedent himself with L?Estro Armonico (Op.3), the music in La Stravaganza goes far beyond these compositions of some five years earlier (though it could well be that they were in fact composed in the period preceding the publication of Op.3); Vivaldi fully exploits the potential of the slow movements, extending them from a few sustained chords into a dramatic interplay between the soloist and tutti players. For the first time too, he moves further away from the concerto grosso form, with the soloist increasingly taking the starring role, supported only minimally by the other players, who at times fall silent, allowing the violin to play with continuo alone. Add to this some of the most elaborate embellishments ever written ? an innovative practice for players at the time who were used to improvising the ornamentation themselves ? and the concertos really do live up to their extravagant title.First released as part of Brilliant Classics? authoritative Vivaldi Edition in 2014, this album is part of a new series of Vivaldi collections by the Italian group L?Arte dell?Arco, led by acclaimed violinist Federico Guglielmo. Experts in authentic Baroque performance, the group?s previous release of Vivaldi?s Ottone in Villa (BC94105) was praised by Gramophone magazine for its "sustained lyricism" and "warm sound". Playing on original instruments, with just one player per part, L?Arte dell?Arco produces a compact but vibrant tone, fully embodying the Italian sound of the Red Priest. The 12 violin concertos which Antonio Vivaldi published as ?La Stravaganza? do full justice to their title: the range of expression is enormous, from the tender lyricism of the slow movements to the wild and tempestuous fast movements, where the solo violin revels in wild leaps and brilliant virtuosity.Exceptionally vivid and energetic performances by maestro Federico Guglielmo and his L?Arte dell?Arco, playing original instruments in Historically Informed Performance Practice, never a dull moment here!Booklet contains extensive liner notes and information on the instruments used.Recorded in 2014 in Padua, Italy.

*** Neither Aristotle nor Plato content themselves with answering the question: How do we see?. In their examination of this scientific issue, they go further, and answer the more fundamental question: What is seeing? The first question pertains to scientific enquiry, which seeks to explain a phenomenon by describing its mechanism. Both Aristotle and Plato give an accurate account of the causes that produce visual sensation. Their accounts differ, but are quite similar with regard to their scientific relevance; they have quite the same capacities and the same failures in their explanation of vision, achieved by equally economical means. The other question - What is seeing? - transcends the mere intention of giving an account of a mechanism, and considers vision from the viewpoint of problems concerning the being of the seer, of what is seen, and of the world in which this process takes place; and it touches upon issues concerning ontology as well as ethics, epistemology and aesthetics, and even theology. Plato's theory reveals its depth when we grasp that sensible vision is that of a divine soul that lives on earth as in exile. Through vision, this soul may seek to escape from its condition, and recover its genuine nature; for vision is the only sense by which we can reach the stars, which, for Plato, feature the same harmony as that of the soul when it was first formed by the demiurge. Yet vision can also plunge the soul further down into its exile. Hence, the Platonic conception of mirror images, which he defines as real bodies, resulting from the coalescence between two fires; they actually occur at the surface of the mirror, without there being any reflection in the modern sense of the term. In this way, Plato refuses to endorse the idea that the mirror image is mere indirect vision, or something virtual, thereby saving the image in the proper sense. Thus, through vision, the soul can encounter inferior realities, which drag it further and further way from the things that are genuine and true. Aristotle's concerns are primary epistemological. His theory provides a guarantee of the truth and reliability of the sense of sight, whereas Plato's theory defined the vision of color as pure sensation, without there being any particular reality in the observed body itself. In Aristotle's theory, the act of vision becomes instantaneous, so that the vision of a color is strictly simultaneous with the state of the body in which the color is observed. This instantaneity is the condition by which, in the Aristotelian physical system, the oneness of time itself can be attained. Moreover, Aristotle's concept of light provides the basis for the immediate and authentic presence of the divine solar star in the midst of the place that is subject to generation and to corruption. Yet Aristotle's theory, as set forth in the De anima and the De sensu, so closely related to the problem of truth, was to prove helpless once the philosopher is forced to explain peculiar phenomena (such as the halo, or the rainbow), which Greek optics had already considered to be formed by visual reflection. Aristotle will then temporarily forget his own theory, and adopt precisely the one he had previously condemned.

The practice of meditation is not only found in the spiritual disciplines of the East, but also in the Christian tradition. It involves imageless and silence prayer through repetition of a Mantra: Maranatha. This word centers the whole subject in the presence of Christ. The tradition of Western monasticism was assumed by Main from its roots, walking towards a contemporary Theology of meditation based on St. Paul's letters, who understands the real presence of the risen Christ in human heart. Convivium Press is honored to publish for the first time in Spanish his last writing: Moment of Christ. The path of meditation, including a Prologue written by Laurence Freeman osb, current Director of the World Community for Christian Meditation.
