A New York Times Best Seller If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling.§§Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off.§§Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn't help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush. Yet Sam knows she'd be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school. So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam's weekly visits to her psychiatrist.§§Caroline introduces Sam to Poet's Corner, a hidden room and a tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large. Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself. Slowly, she begins to feel more "normal" than she ever has as part of the popular crowd . . . until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear. Praise for Every Last Word " Clueless meets Dead Poets Society with a whopping final twist." - Kirkus Reviews§"This book is highly recommended-readers will connect with Sam, relating to her anxiety about her peers, and root for her throughout the book." - VOYA§§"A thoughtful romance with a strong message about self-acceptance, [this] sensitive novel boasts strong characterizations and conflicts that many teens will relate to. Praise for THERE'S A CUSTOMER BORN EVERY MINUTE "Joe Vitale has created an entertaining, educational, and motivational manual-with the help of P.T. Barnum-that belongs in every hotel room alongside the Bible. Then, guests might read his inspirational book first, and give thanks to God for this worthy discovery." -Alan Abel, media hoaxer, author, consultantand lecturer on "Using Your Wits to Win" "If you're going to excel in business, learning about a showman like Barnum and applying some of the lessons he taught can give you valuable insights. Joe Vitale has captured ten of these lessons (he calls them 'rings of power') and shows how you can apply them in a way that will open your eyes and stretch your imagination. There's a lot of money-making and fun wisdom here." -Joseph Sugarman, Chairman, BluBlocker Corporation "Finally someone does it!!! Joe Vitale reveals the REAL P.T. Barnum! Vitale highlights the outrageously astute marketing of Barnum. Barnum's driving belief certainly was that there IS a customer 'born' every minute. You will glean a number of useful 'new' marketing ideas that you can instantly use in your business. And you will learn about one of the savviest marketers of a time gone by. Fun, exciting, insightful, and packed with ideas! Genius!" -Kevin Hogan, author of The Science of Influence and The Psychology of Persuasion "I love this book. If you'd like to know the real story about one of the most fascinating characters in American history, told by a master storyteller (and the person who probably knows more about him than anyone else), read this book. Barnum is not the guy portrayed by the legend attached to his name. He is much, much more, and Vitale tells his story with the can't-put-it-down passion and excitement he's become so well known for." -Bill Harris, President, Centerpointe Research Institute

In the Short Story Series - Volume II, author Joseph Decker presents readers with three very different short stories, two of which are fiction and the third a true, action-adventure. In his first story, "The Poster," Decker writes of the day-to-day life of three young, orphaned Mexican boys and describes their daily struggle to survive in a border town in Mexico. In the story, the boys deal with the harsh environment and a class society that has placed them at the bottom of the economic and social ladder. Remaining positive to survive, the young boys earn money in various ways to buy food and buy tickets for the bullfights held every Sunday afternoon in the summer, the only really source of enjoyment the boys had. Overriding their struggle to survive is a political system in place and run by crooked politicians who, unbeknownst to the boys, control all aspects of their daily lives. In addition, the elections are coming and the candidates' posters are everywhere presenting their pictures, their party affiliations, and then quickly followed by their speeches at gatherings where promises are made to the people and never kept. One of the young boys' ideas drift to another possibility and a better life. In the second work, "The Battle," the author takes an idea from one of the first short stories he read as a young boy that greatly impressed him. The story, "Leiningen Versus the Ants" by Carl Stephenson, was written by a German writer and published in Esquire magazine for the first time in the USA in 1938. The story describes a life and death battle between a plantation owner, his workers, and the army ants that inhabit the Brazilian jungle. Decker takes that idea and expands it to a present-day society and what it is confronted with on a daily basis in order to survive. A surprise ending is in store for the reader. The last story is the true "Shootout at Chacon Creek (Circa 1958)," which tells of a BB gun battle that took place at a creek near the author's hometown of Laredo, Texas, and neighborhood home. The battle occurs without provocation when two groups of young boys decide to fight it out. Like a typical western movie scenario, the author and three of his buddies are caught by surprise out in the open at the bottom of a creek bed by a gang of seven young shooters, the "bad guys" shooting at them from the top of a high embankment overlooking the creek. Exposed and seeking cover, the author and his friends run and hide behind a large sandstone boulder left on the creek bed by an earlier flood. With pieces of sandstone rock being chipped off the boulder by the constant barrage of BBs from above and the inability of any of the four friends to escape or to accurately fire back and above to the shooters on the top of the embankment, a plan is devised to gain the upper hand. The plan is implemented, but a valuable life lesson is learned and one of the shooters comes very close to a serious injury and another is confronted with the possibility of some serious repercussions that may affect him for the rest of his life.

Terrible but Unfinished Story of Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia University of Nebraska Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

No contemporary French feminist has made a bigger impact in America than Helene Cixous. Brilliant, bold, and combative, author of numerous novels and a gargantuan study of James Joyce, and sponsor of a series of notorious seminars at the University of Paris about women's writing, she has exploited the roles of femme fatale and maitresse d'education in a career that has been spectacularly defiant and productive. Sihanouk is one of Cixous's most ambitious projects: the dramatic portrayal of the conflicts between old and new, East and West, North and South, religion and politics. At its center is the figure of Norodom Sihanouk. Vain when a prince, as king Sihanouk discovered his responsibility to his country and came to embody Cambodia. He used every means to keep his country growing, healthy, and out of the wars of Southeast Asia that consumed Laos and Vietnam. Cixous recognized in Sihanouk a historical figure as fascinating as a tragic king in Shakespeare: a man of uncommon intelligence on whom his country's history pivoted, a man placed by fate into a world of bad choices and surrounded by powerful and relentless antagonists. But Sihanouk gave Cixous something more: a king who is indisputably modern, who has read and loved Shakespeare, and whose story continues. First published in 1985, the play begins with Sihanouk's abdication in 1955 and ends with his arrest by the Khmer Rouge two decades later. The destiny of an entire country unfolds through the fifty characters who appear on stage. Juliet Flower MacCannell is a professor of English and comparative literature at the University of California, Irvine. She is author of Figuring Lacan (Nebraska, 1986). Judith Pike is an assistant professor of English at Salisbury State. Lollie Groth is now teaching in Hawaii.

Piney Woods and Its Story (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Piney Woods and Its Story This is the story, told by himself, of a Negro of education, intelligence and sensitiveness, who turned his back upon every-thing that usually makes life worth living for people of his kind and went, without money or influence, or even an invitation, among the poorest and most ignorant of his race, for the sole purpose of helping them in every way within his power. He has told it persuasively and sincerely. It is a valuable human document; a paragraph in a vital chapter of American history. I was glad to publish in McClure s Magazine the first record of his inspiring work. It is difficult to believe that there is any good citizen in this country, white or black, of whatever shade of belief in regard to the larger aspects of the "Negro question," who will not be glad to join with me in wishing God-speed to its author and the remarkable school he has built. Story of Arizona (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from The Story of Arizona As every one knows, the real purpose of a preface to a history is to give the author an opportunity - quite casually, of course - to loss modest floral tributes at himself as he tells you not only what a Matchless Volume he has just written, but as well calls attention to the erudition employed by himself in going only to original sources for his information, and in so doing consulting freely the works of Confucius, Tatistchev and Sheherazade - all in their original tongues. If this is done with sufficient dash and elan, as the gentle reader holds the M. V. in her hands, tears of grief will gather in her left eye at the thought of all the people dead and gone who will never have the opportunity of reading the M. V., while in her right eye crystal drops of joy will listen over the feast of reason that will soon be hers. Now, as to our erudition as the author of The Story of Arizona, permit us to say that the languages employed by the early chroniclers of the Southwest were Spanish, Injun and Mediaeval Arizonese. Dear Valentina - A Love Story 1941-2005 Fortis Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

On December 15, 1944, Valentina and Merle Martin celebrated their third wedding anniversary with a hug, a kiss, and a goodbye-possibly forever. From that day forward, Merle Martin vowed to write his wife a letter every day as long as he was able when stationed in Hawaii and later on Okinawa during his service in World War II. Despite the flooding, typhoons, air raids, and operation of a field hospital less than a mile behind the front lines, Merle kept his promise. In his absence, Val would eventually collect well over three hundred of his letters expressing his fear, sorrow, everlasting love, and unfaltering hope for a better future. In what seemed like a lifetime of separation, Val and Merle remained together through their words and joint hope that he would one day return home safely. After reading through them for the last time, Val Martin has combined Merle's letters with her own personal narrative to paint a picture of the difficulties they faced during what would be their most challenging year as individuals and as a married couple. Dear Valentina bears witness to their experience of grief and loss as well as faithfulness and love in a time of war. About the Author: Valentina Martin was born in Tama County, Iowa on February 11, 1925. With Czech as her first language and English as her second, Val became determined to learn English and learn it well. In doing so, she received a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters Degree in English Literature from the University of Northern Iowa, including several courses at Arizona State University while wintering in Scottsdale, AZ. She completed her masters' degree while owning a real estate firm. In December of 1941, Val married her husband, Merle, and they had one son, Jerald L. Martin who lives in Waterloo, Iowa where she now also resides. After Merle's death in November of 2005, Val made it her personal mission to honor his memory and service during World War II by re-reading the love letters he had sent to her and through them sharing the history they witnessed. Dear Valentina is the realization of her dream to share their story with the world and to honor their love forever.

This "clever opener likely to leave readers breathless both with laughter and anticipation" (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) is the first in the New York Times bestselling series from the author of the Half Upon a Time trilogy. Life is boring when you live in the real world, instead of starring in your own book series. Owen knows that better than anyone, what with the real world's homework and chores. But everything changes the day Owen sees the impossible happen-his classmate Bethany climb out of a book in the library. It turns out Bethany's half-fictional and has been searching every book she can find for her missing father, a fictional character. Bethany can't let anyone else learn her secret, so Owen makes her a deal: All she has to do is take him into a book in Owen's favorite Kiel Gnomenfoot series, and he'll never say a word. Besides, visiting the book might help Bethany find her father... ...Or it might just destroy the Kiel Gnomenfoot series, reveal Bethany's secret to the entire world, and force Owen to live out Kiel Gnomenfoot's final (very final) adventure.
