FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY TRANSLATOR GEOFFREY W. BROMILEY: Helmut Thielicke "has a vivid awareness of the actual needs of actual people living in this age of supreme storm and stress. He sees how the biblical message, how Jesus Christ Himself as the living message, answers powerfully and sufficiently to these needs. He appreciates that faith in Him is not an easy thing, and yet that true faith carries us to victory even in doubt, anxiety, distress and the terrors of conflict and destruction. He attains almost an apocalyptic stature in his depiction of our shattered world and in his proclamation of the message of God's salvation and judgements within it. Here are sermons to put into the hands of contemporaries who suffer from the fears and anxieties which Thielicke so graphically describes but who do not yet perceive the true meaning and relevance of what God did for man in the giving of His only Son. Here are sermons from which to learn how the old Gospel, first given in a very different world, may come with all the living comfort and the regenerative force of truth and reality to our own age too, made relevant by the Holy Spirit on the lips of the sensitive and dedicated preacher."

It also looks through a wider lens on Endo's work, comparing Silence to Endo's other works as well as to the fiction of other authors. Approaching Silence promises to deepen academic appreciation for Endo, within and beyond the West.

Excerpt: "Enjoy the Silence" is Depeche Mode's twenty-fourth UK single, released on 5 February 1990, and the second single from the then upcoming album Violator. As it is one of Depeche Mode's most well-known songs to date, it has been recorded as a cover version by many other artists, including Breaking Benjamin, Keane, Tori Amos, Lacuna Coil, Nada Surf, scala, Entwine, Failure, It Dies Today, Evergreen Terrace, Tanghetto, The Academy Is... with Cobra Starship, Anberlin, HIM, Matthew Good, Bell X1, Apoptygma Berzerk, and No Use for a Name. Today, many people consider this as Depeche Mode's signature song. "Enjoy the Silence" was re-released as a single in 2004 for the Depeche Mode remix project Remixes 81 - 04, and was titled "Enjoy the Silence (Reinterpreted)" or, more simply, "Enjoy the Silence 04". The "Reinterpreted" version was remixed by Mike Shinoda, the rapper and producer for the American band Linkin Park. The single is Gold certificated in the US and Germany. The song won Best British Single at the 1991 BRIT Awards. When "Enjoy the Silence" was written by Martin Gore, it was intended to be a slow-paced ballad in C minor; the demo featured a harmonium with Gore singing. Alan Wilder saw hit potential in the track, and composed an upbeat tempo and structure for the song. Despite initial resistance from songwriter Gore, who felt the spirit of the song was not suited to an upbeat track, the rest of the group liked it. After some self-described "sulking", Gore came around and added more to the embryonic fast version together with producer Mark "Flood" Ellis, notably the guitar riff heard throughout. Depeche Mode lead singer David Gahan contributed his distinctive lead vocals to the track and within hours the band was convinced they had a hit single on their hands. At Gore's insistence, the demo would later be remade into the "Harmonium" version (available on the limited edition 12" vinyl and Maxi CD releases), featuring Gore on vocals. "Enjoy the Silence" became one of

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Rahab The door opened against the drawn chain, grating against it. In the grey strip a woman's face, very grey, very unexpectant, suddenly was bright. It measured a man, young, standing at ease. The chain clicked free. "O it's you, Mr. Samson." The door opened wide, shut them in. The hall was a long shadow beyond the glow of them standing. He was quiet waiting, not sheer against her: his shaggy coat poured the street's coldness. She was a dim thing about eyes. "I'm so glad it's you, Mr. Samson." She walked noiseless through shadow, she took no space from it, she was infinitesimal within a mood. He followed. "I was taking it right easy . . reading." In the gaslight she turned and fronted him. She took his coat. He was a fair boy, gentle, somewhat plump. He sat down, she stood. - I have been in this room before, I have seen this woman before. It is not the sort of room, she is not the sort of woman I want to see for I am here for neither. . . Why strangely now this sense of her reality upon me? It was her room, there they were after all, the woman in her room touching upon him. - Let me see in this silence the woman in her room. Her quiet words did not obtrude upon a silence whose margin he caught as it waved. He saw her a battered creature. Music For Violin & Piano Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

This special collection brings together three minimalist works for violin and piano by composers of three nationalities ? the USA?s Philip Glass, Georgian Giya Kancheli and Estonia?s Erkki-Sven Tüür. Each of the three pieces explores different facets of the genre, providing a showcase of what can be achieved within the minimalist framework.Glass? Sonata for Violin and Piano begins with the rhythmic pulsations and wheel of emotions of the first movement, followed by the intimate second and dance-like final movement. In Kancheli?s Time ? and again, silence is used to juxtapose improvised outbursts of sound, while Tüür?s Conversio creates a rhythmic interaction between the two instruments, which begin in counterpoint and later converge into parallel activity.Violinist Andrea Cortesi is a soloist, chamber musician and section leader in orchestras, he has become renowned for his collaborations with contemporary composers such as Philip Glass, Leo Brouwer and Ennio Morricone, among others. Founder of the Millennium Chamber Orchestra, Quartetto Mosaico and Collegium Tiberinum, he has also performed with such eminent artists as Yo-Yo Ma and Riccardo Muti. Marco Venturi leads an active career as a concert pianist ? as a soloist and as part of the Venturi Duo ? and is also becoming an increasingly sought-after choral and orchestral conductor.Other information:- Recorded in 2013.- Music for violin and piano by three composers from three different countries, who have a fascination with minimal music, the music where repetition, silence and meditation are predominant, music for a different mindset.- This new recording presents the important Violin Sonata by Philip Glass, one of the pioneers and icons of Minimal Music, ?Time?and again? by the Russian mystic Giya Kancheli, and ?Converso? by Erkki Tüür, one of the Baltic minimalists, in the spirit of Arvo Pärt.- Played with great subtlety by two Italians, violinist Andrea Cortesi and pianist Marco Venturi.- New recording, booklet contains liner notes and artist biographies.- Contains liner notes and performer biographies.

Description This novel is based upon true events in the lives of the author and her family members. The narrator, Lana, is three years old when she stands on a hill with her mother and sisters for the first time, waiting for butterflies to land on her. Thus Nily Naiman begins this sensual, emotional, and ever-surprising saga of a very special family. The complex narrative spreads over two lifetimes and four continents, over times of war and peace, and poverty and plenty. The women of this novel are larger than life. Only at the age of 18 does Lana come to the realization that not everything has been known to her about her family, and she begins an adventurous journey in search of her roots and her identity. Her mother, Sara, a determined and passionate woman who found herself in the wilderness of Mongolia during the Second World War, relates a life story of exceptional bravery and turmoil. Lana's two sisters are polar opposites as personalities, but each in her own way is fascinating and brings the reader to tears. Farah, an Arab woman who lives under the Israeli occupation is a symbol of strength and incredible pride in her identity. Lana's captivating daughters each uniquely combine the attributes of sensitivity and courage. Lana herself lives through an extraordinary and unexpected series of events that bring forth all the special strengths that she has within her. Although this complex tale is focused primarily in Mongolia it reaches throughout much of the world. Author Naiman is able to transmit the magical atmosphere of each locale that she describes, from the hard, constricted, narrow-minded climate of Israel, a tiny country at war, to the distant, open terrain of Mongolia, its mountains, lakes, deserts, and forests, and its open-minded people. One thread of the narrative is an old belief that when a girl stands on a hill where butterflies are about, the number that land on her will foretell the number of husbands that she will have. The men in this book, the butterflies, are all interesting in their own right, sensitive, strong and caring. They supply the physical and emotional needs of the women and provide critical support in times of severe stress. But it is the women who are central. Coping with the setbacks and crises of life is a major theme of the story. Both Lana and later her eldest daughter live through shocking events that cause them to retreat within themselves. They lose the capacity to speak or even utter a sound. The book explores in depth the phenomenon of post-traumatic muteness, the horrendous conscious fears and frustrations that accompany it, and the paradoxical and contradictory underlying reality that this kind of mental collapse temporarily frees the individual from her normal relationship with her surroundings, a convenient and all too enticing form of escape. This silence has a "language" of its own. It speaks, it cries, it shouts out in anger, all in the mind of the sufferer. Through the experiences of Lana and her daughter the book describes not only the horrible anxiety and loneliness that are a part of post-traumatic muteness, but the exceptional strength and courage that must be brought to bear to fight one's way out of the suffering and renew one's relationship with the world. Of all the demonstrations of strength and determination in the course of the saga, the struggles of Lana and her daughter in this regard are perhaps the greatest examples.

Third Reich in Power - 2212836414

Third Reich in Power Penguin

Inne 1

The Third Reich in Power examines how it was possible for a group of ideological obsessives to remould a society famous for its sophistication and complexity into a one-party state directed at war and race hate.  Richard J. Evans shows how the Nazis won over the hearts and minds of German citizens, twisted science, religion and culture, and transformed the economy, education, law and order to achieve total dominance in German politics and society.  Drawing on an extraordinary range of research, blending narrative, description and analysis he creates a picture of a dictatorship consumed by visceral hatreds and ambitions, and driven by war. 'Authoritative history... impressive sweep... This essential book comes as a stark reminder, should we need one, of how much freedom a people is prepared to give away in a political climate dominated by fear.' Daily Telegraph Extract from The Third Reich in Power, 1933-1939 by Richard J. Evans Despised minorities were, to be sure, put in the concentration camps; but to focus exclusively on this ignores the much larger number of political and other deviants condemned by the courts and put in state prisons and penitentiaries.  The further in time we get from Nazi Germany, the more difficult it becomes for historians living in democratic political systems and in cultures which respect the rights of the individual to make the leap of imagination necessary to understand people's behaviour in a state such as Nazi Germany, where imprisonment, torture or even death might await anyone who dared to voice the slightest criticism of the regime and its leaders.  Those who approved of such repression were in all likelihood a minority, active supporters and functionaries of the Party like the Block Wardens, and a good number of middle- and upper-class, conservative Germans who thought the best place for Marxists to be was in prison anyway.  Even they, however, knew well enough that they had to be careful about what they said and did, and the dangers of not doing so became abundantly clear once opposition began to spread among these groups too.  The shots that killed Kurt von Schleicher, Herbert von Bose, Edgar Jung, Gustav von Kahr, Erich Klausener and Kurt von Bredow at the beginning of July 1934 were also a warning to upper- and middle-class conservatives to keep their heads down if they did not want them to be blown off. Ordinary conservative citizens like Luise Solmitz, who harboured no thoughts of political activism, may have turned aside from the bleak fact of the regime's willingness to murder its opponents, revealed so starkly in late June and early July 1934, in their relief that the order they craved had been restored; to such people, Röhm's stormtroopers seemed as great a menace as the Reichsbanner or the Red Front-Fighters' League of the Weimar years.  Yet behind closed doors they cannot have been oblivious to the fate of the conservative clique around Vice-Chancellor von Papen.  It was not only the third or so of the population who had been committed to the Marxist left before 1933 that was subject to massive intimidation.  Indeed, scarcely had the murderous violence of the 'Night of the Long Knives' receded, than an even larger minority than the Marxists, that of the German Catholics, began to be prosecuted and imprisoned as they gave vent to their increasingly critical views of the regime in public.  More general still were measures such as the Law on Malicious Gossip, which clamped down on the most trivial expressions of dissent and put people who told jokes about Hitler and Göring in prison.  These were mainly members of the German working class, it is true, but the working class after all made up around half the entire population, and middle- and even upper-class offenders in this respect were brought before the Special Courts as well.  Successful prosecutions under this law were a further instrument of mass intimidation, adding to the general climate of fear and helping to create the spiral of silence in which the regime could commit ever greater crimes without fear of public censure or opposition. The truth is that far from Nazi terror being levelled exclusively against small and despised minorities, the threat of arrest, prosecution and incarceration in increasingly brutal and violent conditions loomed over everyone in the Third Reich, even, as we have seen in the cases brought before the Special Courts, over members of the Nazi Party itself.  The regime intimidated Germans into acquiescence, visiting a whole range of sanctions upon those who dared to oppose it, systematically disorienting people, and depriving them of their traditional social and cultural milieux, such as the pub or the club or the voluntary association, above all where these could be seen as a potential source of resistance, as in the case of the labour movement.  Fear and terror were integral parts of the Nazis' armoury of political weapons from the very beginning.  The state and the Party could use them because within a few months of Hitler's appointment as Reich Chancellor, they had systematically deprived all Germans of virtually every basic human and civil right they had enjoyed under the Weimar Republic.  The law was no protection against the state if the state or any of its agencies suspected that a citizen was disinclined to demonstrate approval of its policies and purposes.  On the contrary, vast numbers of new, often draconian laws were decreed that gave the police, the Gestapo and the SS a virtual carte blanche to deal with anyone suspected of deviating from the norms of human behaviour laid down by the Third Reich for its citizens.  In this situation, it was not surprising that ordinary people and lower-level officials of the Nazi Party began to reinforce the atmosphere of pervasive terror and intimidation by sending their own unsolicited denunciations of deviants to the Gestapo. At the same time, the Gestapo was only one part of a much wider net of surveillance, terror and persecution cast by the Nazi regime over German society in the 1930s; others included the SA and SS, the Criminal Police, the prison service, the social services and employment offices, the medical profession, health centres and hospitals, the Hitler Youth, the Block Wardens and even apparently politically neutral organizations like tax offices, the railway and the post office.  All of these furnished information about deviants and dissidents to the Gestapo, the courts and the prosecution service, forming a polymorphous, uncoordinated but pervasive system of control in which the Gestapo was merely one institution among many.  Everything that happened in the Third Reich took place in this pervasive atmosphere of fear and terror, which never slackened and indeed became far more intense towards the end.  'Do you know what fear is?' an elderly worker asked an interviewer some years after it was all over:  'No. The Third Reich was fear.'  Yet terrorism was only one of the Third Reich's techniques of rule.  For the Nazis did not just seek to batter the population into passive, sullen acquiescence.  They also wanted to rouse it into positive, enthusiastic endorsement of their ideals and their policies, to change people's minds and spirits and to create a new German culture that would reflect their values alone.  This meant propaganda, and here too, as we shall now see, they went to unprecedented lengths to achieve their aims.

Work of God Liturgical Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

From its beginnings, Benedictinism has touched the lives of many people beyond those who dwell in monasteries. For those looking for an everyday grounding in Benedictine spirituality and who wish to pray according to theBenedictine style of Liturgy of the Hours, Work of God is an ideal resource. While written primarily for Benedictine oblates, this simple yet elegant prayer book also gives the unfamiliar user a starting place from which to progress into a more intense practice. Largely a two-week arrangement of morning and evening prayer, it also contains essays that provide a broad introduction to monastic spirituality and its relevance for non-monastics. Work of God relies substantially on the ICEL psalms. The psalms for each day include at least one of those which Benedict recommended for the liturgical hour. The closing prayer for each liturgy is linked through words and images to some concept or quotation in the Rule, thus providing more of connection to Benedictine spirituality. Each day's liturgy includes a short reading and the New Testament canticle, so there's no need to turn from one section to another. Work of God is not an official manual, but rather a convenient alternative to the multiple liturgy books used in some communities, the Roman Breviary, or more general or abbreviated office books. Beautifully bound with gilt-edged pages and one ribbon marker, it is a handsome addition to any bookshelf. Those who live in the spirit of St. Benedict are always alert to God. The opening word of the Rule, listen," is its essence. One listens first of all to the words of Scripture which teach God's way. Work of God helps the pray-er allow the Word to speak within the self in an environment of silence and solitude. Essays by Sutera are "The Life and the Spirit of St. Benedict," "Benedictinism and the World Around It: The Oblate Movement," and "Praying the Liturgy of the Hours." Irene Nowell, OSB, contributes the essay "Praying the Psalms." Other chapters are "Week I - Evening and Morning Praise," "The Practice of Lectio," "Thoughts from the Rule of St. Benedict," "Some Benedictine Prayers," "The Medal and the Cross of St. Benedict," "Week II - Evening and Morning Praise," "Major Feasts of the Church Year," "Common for Feasts of Christ," "Common for Feasts of Mary," "Common of Apostles and Martyrs," "Common of Holy Men and Women," and "Compline(Night Prayer)."

Gaza Writes Back Just World Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Gaza Writes Back is a collection of short stories from fifteen young writers in Gaza, members of a generation that has suffered immensely under Israel's siege and blockade. Their experiences, especially during and following Israel's 2008-2009 offensive known as "Operation Cast Lead", have fundamentally impacted their lives and their writing. Indeed, many of these writers saw the war as a catalyst for their writing, as they sought an outlet and a voice in its aftermath. They view the book as a means of preserving Palestinian memories and presenting their narratives to the world without filters. Their words take us into the homes and hearts of moms, dads, students, children, and elders striving to live lives of dignity, compassion, and meaning in one of the world's most embattled communities. These stories are acts of resistance and defiance, proclaiming the endurance of Palestinians and the continuing resilience and creativity of their culture in the face of ongoing obstacles and attempts to silence them. Whether tackling the tragedy that surrounds missile strikes and home raids, or the everyday indignities encountered by Palestinian refugees, Gaza Writes Back brings to life the real issues that the people of Gaza face. One prominent theme in many of the stories is the wisdom of parents and grandparents. A sense of longing pervades the book, as the characters in the stories reveal desires ranging from the mundane to the complex--including, in several of the stories, a strong yearning to return to the characters' family homes and properties after many decades in exile. Social differences within Gaza are also sensitively explored. Readers will be moved by the struggles big and small that emerge from the well-crafted writing, and by the hope and courage that radiates from the authors' biographies. Five years after Operation Cast Lead, these stories remind us that the pain lingers on and the people of Gaza will be forever scarred by the attack. Yet, the call for justice remains forceful and persistent, and these young Gazan writers refuse to let the world forget about them--their land, their people, and their story.

William Stoner is born at the end of the nineteenth century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar's life, so different from the hardscrabble existence he has known. And yet as the years pass, Stoner encounters a succession of disappointments: marriage into a "proper" family estranges him from his parents; his career is stymied; his wife and daughter turn coldly away from him; a transforming experience of new love ends under threat of scandal. Driven ever deeper within himself, Stoner rediscovers the stoic silence of his forebears and confronts an essential solitude.§§John Williams's luminous and deeply moving novel is a work of quiet perfection. William Stoner emerges from it not only as an archetypal American, but as an unlikely existential hero, standing, like a figure in a painting by Edward Hopper, in stark relief against an unforgiving world.

Paul Davies' "The Goldilocks Enigma: Why is the Universe Just Right for Life?" gets to the heart of what makes the universe tick - and what makes our place in it so special. It's not too hot, it's not too cold, and its forces act together in a way that's just right: why does the universe seem so perfectly tailor-made for life to exist? Paul Davies, one of the world's most acclaimed science writers, shows how everything from the humble carbon atom to the speed of light and the laws of physics themselves interact. He asks: is there a theory of everything within our grasp? If there was a big bang, what happened before it? Is there on universe or many? Could we exist within an endless time loop? "This is popular science as home to the really big questions". ("Independent" Books of the Year). "Beautifully judged". ("Guardian"). "Britain's most eminent cosmologist...Davies is effortlessly at home in the scale of the impossibly large, hundreds of billions of miles". ("Observer"). "He leads the reader gently by the hand through the basics of what we are sure we understand about space, time and the universe". (John Gribbin). "Paul Davies is undoubtedly one of the most important modern scientific authors ...his most significant contribution to date". (Patrick Moore). Paul Davies is Director of the BEYOND Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science, and co-Director of the Cosmology Initiative, both at Arizona State University. An internationally-acclaimed physicist, writer and broadcaster, Davies is the author of some twenty award-winning books, including "The Eerie Silence: Searching for Ourselves in the Universe", "The Goldilocks Enigma: Why is the Universe Just Right for Life?" and "The Mind of God: Science and the Search for Ultimate Meaning".
