Recipe for Life Michael Joseph Ltd

From Queen of Tarts to the nation's heart, Mary Berry shares her Recipe for Life. Read by the actress Patricia Hodge. 'In the words of my father, my birth caused no end of trouble...' From the moment she came into the world - two weeks early, throwing her parents' lives into disarray - Mary has gracefully but firmly done things her own way. Born in 1935, in the city of Bath, Mary's childhood was a curious mix of idyllic picnics and ramblings, and alarming air raids; of a spirited and outdoorsy home life and a dreaded school existence. All nearly cut horribly short by an almost fatal bout of polio when she was thirteen, which isolated Mary in hospital, away from beloved family and friends for months. Recovery saw her turn to her one true passion - cookery. And so began a love affair that has - so far - spanned six remarkable decades; from demonstrating ovens in the early 1950s to producing glossy food magazines in the 60s and 70s, gradually becoming the country's most prolific and - many would say - best loved cookery writer. Until her emergence in the 21st century as a TV sensation and style icon on the Great British Bake Off. As a working mother, at the heart of a busy household, Mary became an expert at the art of juggling, even bringing her working life into her home with her Aga school. And there have been challenges, one terrible tragedy and many joys along the way. In this touching, evocative and fascinating memoir, we accompany Mary on her journey of nearly eighty years; a life lived to the full, with a wicked sense of fun and an eye for the absurd, it is the life of a delightfully traditional but thoroughly modern woman. Fans of The Great British Bake Off can't wait to get their hands on Mary Berry's Recipe for Life. Born in 1935, Mary has been teaching Britain how to cook for over half a century. Her far-reaching culinary career has taken her from recipe tester, cookery editor, author and entrepreneur to TV personality. Mary lives in Buckinghamshire with her husband Paul.

The World of Life Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The World of Life: A Manifestation of Creative Power, Directive Mind and Ultimate Purpose IN the present volume I have attempted to summarise and complete my half-century of thought and work on the Darwinian theory of evolution. In several directions I have extended the scope and application of the theory, and have shown that it is capable of explaining many of the phenomena of living things hitherto thought to be beyond its range. Among these are the detailed distribution of plants and animals, which I have discussed at some length. It occupies about one-fourth of the volume (chapters II. To and brings out certain facts and conclusions which I believe will be Of interest to all plant-lovers, and also be not without a certain value to botanists. Next in importance are three chapters (x., XL, and X11.) devoted to a general review of the Geological Record and a discussion of the various problems arising out of it. Some of the conclusions to which this examination leads us are, I believe, both important and of much general interest. Chaitanya and His Age (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Chaitanya and His Age The first 190 pages of this book embody my lectures as Ramtanu Lahiri Research Fellow for the session 1919, and the remaining portion is meant as my lectures for 1921. The subject chosen for 1920 was "The Bengali Prose Style from 1800 to 1857." As this subject was to be studied by the students of the Indian Vernaculars in our University for their examination, the urgency of its treatment required me to stop the Chaitanya topics and deliver a course of lectures on the prose-style last year. These lectures were delivered and published early in 1921. And, I next hastened to revert to my half-finished lectures on Chaitanya. There are some points in this book which are a repetition of the things said in my other books, but this could not be helped. As I have attempted to give here a complete and consistent story of the great hero of my memoir I had to include all noteworthy points of his life in a short compass. There are of course many things in this book not dealt with elsewhere and I have always tried to present the incidents of Chaitanya's life in a new light. Letters to Another Room Renaissance Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This is a beautiful translation by John Farndon (with Olga Nakston) of the late Ravil Bukharaev's literary existential masterpiece that seeks to reconcile his Muslim faith with the pursuit of his ideals and his search of self and understanding of life, particularly his notions of 'authenticity' which although conflicted by it as a person and human being, it is what framed his world view. Throughout their long marriage, the poets Ravil Bukharaev and Lydia Grigorieva have written in separate rooms in their home. In this deeply felt and poetic memoir, Ravil writes to Lydia to explain at last things left unsaid in their great love for each other. With immense honesty and insight, he explores how their journey together has been shaped by his profound Muslim beliefs and his lifelong search for what is authentic and true. Along the way, he creates beautiful and moving vignettes of eight very different people struggling to find meaning in their life, from old Elizaveta Osipovna, alone in her Moscow flat, to proud Arzhana coping with a tough life in the Altai mountains. The honesty and transparency informing this epistolary novel-essay is at times both stunning and stupendous. In the author's own words, here is 'an attempt by a man to have it out with his loved one, which is all the more difficult in view of the most vital and crucial condition of such an exchange - complete and total sincerity'. Ravil Bukharaev was a celebrated writer, poet and scholar of religious, cultural and political history of his native Tatarstan and author of over thirty books.

"Smartass is a smart, sweet coming of age story, evocative of a half-forgotten America at the cusp of tectonic national-and generational-changes that still deeply resonate. Kelly's narrative and dialogue both crackle and continue to entice with each new work!" -Rory O'Connor, author of Nukespeak: The Selling of Nuclear Technology and Friends, Followers and the Future: How Social Media are Changing Politics, Threatening Big Brands, and Killing Traditional Media "Brian Kelly's "Smartass" promises us a wild horse ride in its opening lines and it delivers, but the book itself is more like a time machine that takes us to a vanished time in American life. For people of his generation it will be a bittersweet nostalgic journey and for the young it will reveal a time and place where not only could a black man never become president, he was often forbidden to eat at the same lunch counter as whites. It's important that the younger generation feels how close all that is in time and "Smartass", among other things, does just that." -Richard Lourie, author of Sakharov and The Autobiography of Joseph Stalin "With a black man in the White House, racial politics in America is alive and well. Brian Kelly's novel, Smartass takes us back to a time when America was just beginning to emerge from its nasty history of bigotry and hate. But more than a nostalgic trip down a not so rosy memory lane, the story is a reminder of how far we've come and how far we still have to go. Bravo." -Richard Stratton, author of Altered States of America Brian B. Kelly became the first person in Harvard's long history to complete the requirements for a BA in English while still a sophomore. After meeting requirements for a second major, he graduated from Harvard with honors in 1967. Smartass is his second book. Currently he is working on Commie Spy! The Life and Times of a Soviet Patriot From Brooklyn, a novel based on the life of his friend Joel Barr, the close friend of Julius Rosenberg. He lives in New York City.

Outrageous Fortune The Robson Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Leeds Castle, once home to kings and queens, was a place of spectacular opulence and luxury, and it was here that Anthony Russell spent his childhood; a childhood beyond the reaches of ordinary imagination. Away from the extravagance, the embrace of his nanny and the strong but distant love of his mother, Anthony's childhood was often lonely and fraught with the pressures of upholding the 'Castle Way', unwritten rules that were, perhaps, not the best preparation for life outside the castle walls. The polite reserve of his sheltered existence was inevitably ruptured by the arrival of the 1960s, with its new music, mores, and social freedoms; things both alluring and alarming to a young man who had spent his youth in splendid isolation. Uniquely entertaining, Outrageous Fortune is an extraordinary memoir, an accessible and personable account of how the 'other half ' lives, and a real-life Downton Abbey. As he documents his life at Leeds Castle, Anthony Russell gives us a vivid and intimate glimpse into a fascinating world gone by.

Going to the Wars Macmillan

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Max Hastings grew up with romantic dreams of a life amongst warriors. But after his failure as a parachute soldier in Cyprus in 1963, he became a journalist instead. Before he was 30 he had reported conflicts in Northern Ireland, Biafra, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Middle East, Cyprus, Rhodesia, India and a string of other trouble spots. His final effort was as a war correspondent during the Falklands War. Going to the Wars is a story of his experiences reporting from these battlefields. It is also the story of a self-confessed coward: a writer with heroic ambitions who found himself recording the acts of heroes. 'Max Hastings is one of the greatest living war correspondents.' John Keegan 'A wonderful account of the wars of our times.' William Shawcross, Literary Review 'His memoirs have ...honesty, pace and readability.' Jeremy Paxman 'The chapters on the Falklands War are ...one of the best things written about warfare in half a century.' John Simpson, Daily Telegraph 'This memoir is a first-class piece of reportage.' Jon Swain, Sunday Times
