Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Compelling, courageous and completely unforgettable, "Call Me Drog" is a classic coming-of-age story that packs a strong emotional punch. Parker is a quiet, introverted eleven-year-old boy, coming to terms with his parents' divorce, when he stumbles upon Drog, an ugly green puppet left in the rubbish. But Drog is no ordinary puppet; he's a talking, sarcastic, obnoxious puppet...who won't let go of Parker's hand! Worst of all, no one believes that Drog - not Parker - is saying all of the outrageous things that get Parker into trouble. When his best friend stops talking to him, and his dad threatens to sign him up to the Bradley Military Academy however, Parker finds that Drog is the only one he can talk to - and discovers that some of the things he says aren't all so obnoxious after all. And as Parker takes up aikido and builds up the courage to stand up to his father, he finds himself letting go of his worries...and finally, Drog lets go of his hand.

Everything was fine until Drog showed up. Don't ask me why I picked him out of the trash - he just looked like an ugly old puppet. And I wish I had never put him on, 'cos no matter how hard I try, I can't get him off. Eleven-year-old Parker is trying to come to terms with his parents' divorce when he stumbles upon Drog, an ugly hand puppet left in the rubbish. But Drog is no ordinary puppet; he's a sarcastic, obnoxious, talking puppet...who won't let go of Parker's hand! The trouble is no one else believes Parker. How can he prove that he's not the one doing the talking, and how can he get Drog off his hand? Bold, crazy and a little bit creepy, Call Me Drog is an unforgettable coming-of-age story, perfect for study in the Key Stage 3 classroom.

Alain de Botton, best-selling author of How Proust can Change Your Life, has set six of the finest minds in the history of philosophy to work on the problems of everyday life. Here then are Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Montaigne, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche on some of the things that bother us all; lack of money, the pain of love, inadequacy, anxiety, the fear of failure and the pressure to conform.

'Only with the greatest of simplifications, for the sake of convenience, can we say Africa. In reality, except as a geographical term, Africa doesn't exist'. Ryszard Kapuscinski has been writing about the people of Africa throughout his career. In a study that avoids the official routes, palaces and big politics, he sets out to create an account of post-colonial Africa seen at once as a whole and as a location that wholly defies generalised explanations. It is both a sustained meditation on the mosaic of peoples and practises we call 'Africa', and an impassioned attempt to come to terms with humanity itself as it struggles to escape from foreign domination, from the intoxications of freedom, from war and from politics as theft. The Beginning: Collision, Ghana 1958 More than anything, one is struck by the light. Light everywhere. Brightness everywhere. Everywhere, the sun. Just yesterday, an autumnal London was drenched in rain. The airplane drenched in rain. A cold, wind, darkness. But here, from the morning

When Leonardo da Vinci painted his Last Supper he did not know that on the table in front of Jesus Christ was a shallow wooden tray, not quite square in shape and measuring about the span of a hand across. Laid out in the tray in a special pattern were thirteen pieces of pot, varying in both colour and shape, and each one with a Greek letter engraved into it. During the proceedings Jesus gave out the pieces to his disciples, keeping one for himself. Over the next half century the pieces travelled far and wide with their owners, then became lost to the world. A chance finding of a Dead Sea Scroll almost two thousand years later revealed an account of the Last Supper. It also revealed that if mankind did not 'mend its ways' God would destroy the Earth and all that lived upon it. But he did give mankind a get-out. All thirteen pieces of pot had first to be located then re-assembled in their origin positions within a wooden square by the leaders of the thirteen most powerful nations in the World to show their commitment to making the world a better place. The task of locating the pieces fell to a professor of archaeology at an English University. Once done 'Christ's Holy Square', as he called it, was re-assembled at the UN. But that wasn't the end of the story for mankind did not keep its promise. God was about to wreak his revenge when he discovered a threat from far beyond the Sun's boundaries.

Excerpt: ... any more. For the matter of that, it was an observation I often made-I was never invited more than once to any place. To my astonishment I saw myself cut out from one house-party after another, and there sprang up a rumour that I brought bad luck with me. Isn't it odd, this often-observed tendency to superstition amongst sportsmen? I have really no time to linger any longer over my new game-laws, for I have so many other reforms concerning the animals at hand. Only think how much there is to be done for domestic animals also! The division of labour forms here a most important chapter. The domestic animals will only have to work a certain number of hours a day, in proportion to their strength, and not, as now, work themselves to death. And so when age comes upon them men will have to try to give back to the tired animals a small part of all that these humble fellow-workmen have given to them as long as they were able. Surely the domestic animals belong to the family; and just as the old labourer is allowed to end his days in peace in his little cottage, so shall the old horse, when his eyes begin to grow dim and his legs to get stiff, be allowed to rest in his stall; and now and then one should go and pet the old servant with grateful hands, and give him his bit of bread as before. The old worn-out ox, surely he too might be allowed at last to glean a little dry hay from the fields which he in his strong days has so many times ploughed for the seed, which year after year filled the farmer's barn with golden sheaves and sweet clover. And the kind, sympathetic little donkeys, whose whole life is a series of self-renunciation, and whose melancholy is an unheard protest against the degradation into which they have fallen-surely I shall not forget you in my reforms, my poor Italian friends! And keep up your courage, resigned little donkeys! your cause is a good one, the tyranny of barbarians shall come to an end one day, and the oppressed...
