"One of the great original voices of our times--a pilgrim in search of beautiful innocence."--Jack Kerouac "Robert Lax's poems [prove] yet again that the gift to be simple is the gift to be free, that less is more, and that least may sometimes be most."--John Ashbery Poems (1962--1997) gathers thirty-five years of Robert Lax's work, rarely published and largely composed in solitude on the island of Patmos. Compiled and edited by the poet's former assistant John Beer, this selection reflects--through meditative sequences in striking vertical columns--Lax's rigorous attention to the world around him and his relentless aspiration to new ways of writing. love & death are blood & bone love & death are bread & stone love & death are rose & thorn (love & death are sheep & shorn) Robert Lax (1915--2000) published dozens of volumes of poetry and prose with small presses and worked as an editor for the New Yorker, Jubilee, and PAX. From 1962 to the end of his life, he made his home in the Greek islands. John Beer is the author of The Waste Land and Other Poems (Canarium, 2010), which won the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America. For two years in the late 1990s, he served as literary assistant to Robert Lax. He currently lives and teaches in Oregon.

Dorothea Lasky has been hailed as "undoubtedly one of the nation's most talented younger poets" (Huffington Post). From her first book, AWE, Lasky has been crafting her hallmark voice, a mixture of language that is "boldly colored, unabashed, and wildly human" (Timothy Donnelly), presenting her readers with poetry full of "blood-red realness" (Boston Globe) and haunting lines that "recall Frank O Hara and Allen Ginsberg" (Chicago Tribune). With each new book, from the grand religiosity of AWE to the flat sadness and nihilism of Black Life to the witchery of Thunderbird, her poems have kept gaining an increasingly robust readership and have influenced an entire generation of new poets, fusing the transcendent vision of the New York School with a kind of performative confessionalism, bringing the force and power of the classical world into the everyday. ROME, her fourth collection, marks the arrival of this seminal American poet to the classic Liveright imprint. This work finds her in the arena of eternal longing and heartsick desire, confronting her ghosts and demons, savaged by grief and lust. ROME is a book populated with love's proxies, its wounded animals and desiccated bodies, in league with her chosen poetic company: Catullus and Anne Sexton, Nicki Minaj and Drake. Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy K. Smith writes, "Dorothea Lasky's ROME is dark, fearlessly frank, unabashedly vulnerable, and full of real live heart." In these poems of high lyricism, Lasky fuses the ancient world, with all its grandiosity and power, with the fierceness and heartbreak of our everyday world, where sometimes all a poet can do is to carry her line like a weapon in an awful blood sport the blood jet taking no prisoners as she slashes across a landscape of language, strange fascinations, real people, and the imagination."

T. S. Eliot the Poems Faber & Faber Poetry

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Poems of T. S. Eliot is the authoritative edition of one of our greatest poets, scrupulously edited by Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue. It provides, for the first time, a fully scrutinized text of Eliot's poems, carefully restoring accidental omissions and removing textual errors that have crept in over the full century in which Eliot has been so frequently printed and reprinted. The edition also presents many poems from Eliot's youth which were published only decades later, as well as others that saw only private circulation in his lifetime, of which dozens are collected for the first time. To accompany Eliot's poems, Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue have provided a commentary that illuminates the creative activity that came to constitute each poem, calling upon drafts, correspondence and other original materials to provide a vivid account of the poet's working processes, his reading, his influences and his revisions. The first volume respects Eliot's decisions by opening with his Collected Poems 1909-1962 in the form in which he issued it, shortly before his death fifty years ago. There follow in this first volume the uncollected poems from his youth that he had chosen to publish, along with such other poems as could be considered suitable for publication. The second volume opens with the two books of poems of other kinds that he issued, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and his translation of Perse's Anabase, moving then to verses privately circulated as informal or improper or clubmanlike. Each of these sections is accompanied by its respective commentary, and then, pertaining to the entire edition, there is a comprehensive textual history recording variants both manuscript and published. The Poems of T. S. Eliot is a work of enlightening scholarship that will delight and inform all those who read Eliot for pleasure, as well as all those who read with pleasure and for study. Here are a new accuracy and an unparalleled insight into the marvels and landmarks from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and The Waste Land through to Four Quartets.

"The weft of this excellent, imaginatively titled volume sparkles with individualistic variations like the myriad facets of a tapestry by Klimt. And yet these six accomplished poets have strung the warp with a golden fiber of subtle, reflective regional consistency." CHARLOTTE SCHOFIELD poet, writer, and author of The Attention Deficit Memoir From the Land of Enchantment and old Route 66 come six poets who gather semi-monthly to read the work of others more famous, then write and critique their own. In this volume you will read a selection from the best of these poems written over the ten-year period of the existence of this group called Fresh Ink New Mexico. "A collection of poems both thoughtful and beautiful, sure to illuminate, awaken, and delight the discerning reader." SEAN MURPHY author of The Time of New Weather, and The Hope Valley Hubcap King. "In this new collection 'where memories protrude in ancient bones and deep arroyos knife through mesas' the poems traverse landscapes as diverse as those of the fabled highway Route 66. Just off the road 'honey mesquite blooms.' Sandhill cranes forage, coyotes prowl and a 'spotted horse gallops in spirals' while 'yucca and chamisa stand silent witness.' "Closer to home a drunken black widow spider spins a skewered web. A poet laments the senseless death of nine Iraqi boys on a soccer field. Famished men 'set snares for wild chickens they'd heard scratching in the brush.' "Here are poems that strive to understand and commemorate the land, the heart, love, memory, the past, the present and all points in-between." MARILYN STABLEIN winner of the New Mexico Book Award for Splitting Hard Ground.

Mystical Poems of Rumi University of Chicago Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

My verse resembles the bread of Egypt - night passes over it, and you cannot eat it any more. Devour it the moment it is fresh, before the dust settles upon it. Its place is the warm climate of the heart; in this world it dies of cold. Like a fish it quivered for an instant on dry land, another moment and you see it is cold. Even if you eat it imagining it is fresh, it is necessary to conjure up many images. What you drink is really your own imagination; it is no old tale, my good man.Jalal al-Din Rumi (1207-73), legendary Persian Muslim poet, theologian, and mystic, wrote poems acclaimed through the centuries for their powerful spiritual images and provocative content, which often described Rumi's love for God in romantic or even erotic terms. His vast body of work includes more than three thousand lyrics and odes, many of which came to him while he was in a religiously inspired trance. This volume includes four hundred poems selected by renowned Rumi scholar A. J. Arberry, who provides here one of the most comprehensive and adept English translations of this enigmatic genius. "Mystical Poems" is the definitive resource for anyone seeking an introduction to - or an enriched understanding of - one of the world's greatest poets.

In a city ironically famous for its natural setting, the roving subject's gaze naturally turns upward, past the condo towers which frame the protected "view corridors" at the heart of Vancouver's municipally- guaranteed development plan. But look for the city, and one encounters "a kind of standing wave of historical vertigo, where nothing ever stops or grounds one's feet in free-fall." Murakami approaches the urban center through its inhabitants' greatest passion: real estate, where the drive to own is coupled with the practice of tearing down and rebuilding. Like Dubai, where the marina looks remarkably like False Creek, Vancouver has become as much a city of cranes and excavation sites as it is of ocean and landscape. "Rebuild" engraves itself on the absence at the city's center, with its vacant civic square and its bulldozed public spaces. The poems crumble in the time it takes to turn the page, words flaking from the line like the rain-damaged stucco of a leaky condominium. The city's "native" residential housing style now troubles the eye with its plainness, its flaunting of restraint, its ubiquity. What does it mean to inhabit and yet despise the "Vancouver Special"; to attempt to build poems in its style, when a lyric is supposed to be preciously unique, but similar, in its stanzas or "rooms," to other lyric poems? What does it mean to wake from a dream in which one buys a presale in a condo development--and is disappointed to have awoken? In the book's final section, the poems turn inward, to the legacy left by Murakami's father, who carried to his death the burden of the displaced and disinherited: the house seized by the government during World War II, having previously seized the land from its native inhabitants--a "mortgage" from which his family has never truly recovered.

Mary Oliver is one of America's best-loved poets. Her luminous poetry celebrates nature and beauty, love and the spirit, silence and wonder, extending the visionary American tradition of Whitman, Emerson, Frost and Emily Dickinson. The winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, she has lived for many years on Cape Cod. Her extraordinary poetry is nourished by her intimate knowledge and minute daily observation of the New England coast, its woods and ponds, its birds and animals, plants and trees. 'Red bird came all winter firing up the landscape as nothing else could'.So begins her latest collection, and the image of that fiery bird stays with the reader, appearing in unexpected forms and guises until, in a postscript, he explains himself: '...for truly the body needs a song, a spirit, a soul. And no less, to make this work, the soul has need of a body, and I am both of the earth and I am of the inexplicable beauty of heaven where I fly so easily, so welcome, yes, and this is why I have been sent, to teach this to your heart. "Red Bird" is Mary Oliver's most wide-ranging collection to date, and includes her first-ever cycle of love poems. As in all her books, there are poems on the natural world and her gratitude for its gifts, as well as tributes to the many people she has loved in her seventy years, and poems for her disobedient dog, Percy. But here her attention turns also with ferocity to the degradation of the Earth and the denigration of the downtrodden by the powerful.

Edward Lear I B TAURIS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"Children swarmed to him like settlers. He became a land." W.H. Auden Edward Lear - beloved nonsense poet, author of such adored poems as The Owl and the Pussycat, inventor of otherworldly characters like Quangle Wangles and of the modern limerick; lauded artist and illustrator - was a genius who defies classification. Gregarious and popular, Lear had a wide circle of friends, but was often lonely and subject to frequent bouts of depression and debilitating epilepsy, the shame of which he struggled with all his life. In this captivating biography, fellow poet Peter Levi renders descriptions of Lear's sketches and watercolours (of which he painted some 10,000 in the course of his career) and provides incisive portraits of his classic poems, such as 'The Jumblies', 'The Owl and the Pussycat' and 'The Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo', setting them in the wider context of traditional nursery rhymes. Lear belonged to the great tradition of adventurous British travellers, undertaking extensive journeys in Italy and Greece, in Albania, Turkey, Egypt, Palestine and India and these always-eventful journeys are related here, alongside extracts and quotations from his letters and diaries - an essential biography for all lovers of this remarkable British literary figure and now recognised as one of the greatest nineteenth-century landscape painters.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

D.H. LAWRENCE: SYMBOLIC LANDSCAPES This book analyzes the rich discourses of mythology, symbolism, form, eroticism and landscape in D.H.Lawrence's fiction. Jane Foster traces Lawrence's symbols (tigers, suns, fish, peacocks) in many of the short stories, as well as the major novels. 'Spirit of place' was always important for Lawrence, and Foster's study investigates how Lawrence's concept of place informed his fiction, poetry and travel books. EXTRACT Lawrence uses many traditional poetic symbols - flowers, fire, the Moon - but there are some symbols that he has made very much his own: blood, rivers, the phallus, rainbow and the Lawrencean bestiary: horse, phoenix, peacock, dragon, snake, lion, tiger, rabbit and fish. The Lawrencean animals are the most alive of living symbols. There are many symbolic beasts in the poems too: fish, tortoises, snakes, eagles, elephants, mosquitoes, goats, etc. ..... D.H. Lawrence probably uses more flowers in his art than any other comparable writer. The poems are full of flowers - irises, violets, roses, campions - all kinds of flowers, hundreds of flowers, blossoms and plants. He fills his books with flowers rather like the Early Netherlandish painters filled their paintings of the Madonna with heaps of flowers. Lawrence uses flower symbolism to underpin the action and the emotional states of his characters. Ursula, for instance, delights, as Connie Chatterley does, in flowers. They remind her of the beauty of the world when the pain of love becomes too much. In Women in Love, Ursula is transported, to use the old term, by some daisies floating in water: She went along the bank towards the sluice. The daisies were scattered broadcast on the pond, tiny radiant things, like an exaltation, points of exaltation here and there. Why did they move so strongly and mystically? "Look," he said, "your boat of purple paper is escorting them, and they are a convoy of rafts. Some of the daisies came slowly towards her, hesitating, making a shy, bright little cotillion on the dark clear water. Their gay, bright candour moved her so much as they came near, that she was almost in tears. "Why are they so lovely?" she cried. "Why do I think them so lovely?" With illustrations, bibliography and notes.

"This book recounts my journey through the Colorado Plateau, a journey through place and time and self.... During my explorations of more than three decades, I found a land that sears into my heart and soul, a place that has taught me and changed me. I also discovered a land of conflict and endurance, a land that has given birth to one of the great chapters in American history." --from the Introduction The Colorado Plateau, stretching across four states and covering nearly 80 million acres, is one of the most unique and spectacular landscapes in the world. Remote, rugged, and dry -- at once forlorn and glorious -- it is a separate place, a place with its own distinctive landscape, history, and future. In "Fire on the Plateau," legal scholar and writer Charles Wilkinson relates the powerful story of how, over the past thirty years, he has been drawn ever more deeply into the redrock country and Indian societies of the Colorado Plateau. His work in the early 1970s as staff attorney for the newly formed Native American Rights Fund brought him into close contact with Navajo and Hopi people. His growing friendships with American Indians and increasing understanding of their cultures, along with his longstanding scholarship and experiences on federal public lands, led him to delve into the complicated history of the region.Wilkinson examines that history -- the sometimes violent conflicts between indigenous populations and more recent settlers, the political machinations by industry and the legal establishment, the contentious disputes over resources and land use -- and provides a compelling look at the epic events that have shaped the region. From centuries of habitation by nativepeoples to Mormon settlement, from the "Big Build-Up" of the post-World War II era to the increased environmental awareness of recent years, he explores the conquests of tribes and lands that have taken place, and the ways in which both have endured.Throughout, Wilkinson uses his own personal experiences as a lawyer working with Indian people and his heartfelt insights about a land that he grew to love to tie together the threads of the story. "Fire on the Plateau" is a vital and dynamic work that is sure to strike a chord with anyone interested in the past or future of the American Southwest.
