After success in the commercial world doing ad campaigns internationally for companies from American Express, Davidoff, New York Times to name a few as well as magazines from Vanity Fair, Travel and Leisure, GQ, Elle, Rolling Stone and many others David has gone on to have exhibitions in Los Angeles and Berlin. LOVE & OTHER STORIES - in spite of David Drebin being a master of staging, the figures entangled in their emotions all seem to feel unobserved and safe. We remain unaware about the causes of the passionate feelings of his female characters, their experiences before being captured in their apparently agitated moods. One has to create a story behind these photos and this way embark on an exciting journey into the imagination. They remind us of film scenes we have never seen. David Drebin's photos are very expressive, matching the subjects that are filled with exciting details. The observer can't escape the mood of each female character highlighted in these photos.

About Love and Other Stories Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

'the greatest short story writer who has ever lived' Raymond Carver's unequivocal verdict on Chekhov's genius has been echoed many times by writers as diverse as Katherine Mansfield, Somerset Maugham, John Cheever and Tobias Wolf. While his popularity as a playwright has sometimes overshadowed his achievements in prose, the importance of Chekhov's stories is now recognized by readers as well as by fellow authors. Their themes - alienation, the absurdity and tragedy of human existence - have as much relevance today as when they were written, and these superb new translations capture their modernist spirit. Elusive and subtle, spare and unadorned, the stories in this selection are among Chekhov's most poignant and lyrical. They include well-known pieces such as 'The Lady with the Little Dog', as well as less familiar work like 'Gusev', inspired by Chekhov's travels in the Far East, and 'Rothschild's Violin', a haunting and darkly humorous tale about death and loss. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

I Love Dollars: And Other Stories of China Penguin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

An immediate sensation upon publication in China, I LOVE DOLLARS makes high comedy out of modern everyday life in China. In the title story, a young man, acutely aware of his filial duty, sets out to secure a prostitute for his father, only to haggle his old man out of a good time. This and other stories amplify China's identity crisis in post-Mao settings ranging from an old Yangtze River vessel to failing factories, cheap diners, and a for-profit hospital run according to dated socialist norms. Through a cast of brilliantly drawn characters, Zhu Wen's stories create a vivid portrait of contemporary China - its wealth and poverty, humour and chaos.

Typhoon and Other Stories Penguin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In these four stories, written between 1900 and 1902, Joseph Conrad bid gradual farewell to his adventurous life at sea and began to confront the more daunting complexities of life on land in the twentieth century. In "Typhoon" Conrad reveals, in the steadfast courage of an undemonstrative captain and the imaginative readiness of his young first mate, the differences between instinct and intelligence in a partnership vital to human survival. "Falk", the companion sea-story, contrasts, as Conrad once put it, 'common sentimentalism with the frank standpoint of a more or less primitive man', a man with a conscience, however, about the girl he desires. In one of the 'land-stories' Conrad explores the utter isolation of an East European emigrant in England; in the other, the plight of a woman ironically trapped by the unwitting alliance of two retired widowers - each blind in his own way.

Rip Van Winkle, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow & Other Stories - Washington Irving

Książki & Multimedia > Książki

Opis - Rip van Winkle is an amiable man whose home and farm suffer from his lazy neglect; a familiar figure about the village, he is loved by all except his wife. One autumn day he escapes her nagging to wander up into the mountains, and there after drinking some liquor offered to him by a band of very strange folk, he settles down under a shady tree and falls asleep. He wakes up twenty years later and returns to his village to find that not only is his wife dead but war and revolution have changed many things. He, on the other hand, although older is not appreciably wiser and soon slips back into his idle habits. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tells of conscientious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. Orderly and strict in school, out of school his life is disorderly and his head full of fearful fantasies. He is in love with the beautiful Katrina but has a rival for her hand, a dashing young hero who, together with his prankster friends, plays on Ichabod's superstitions, notably with the story of a headless horseman who haunts the region. Tragedy strikes when their hapless victim encounters just such an apparition when returning home one dark and especially dismal night . . . Three equally compelling stories, The Spectre Bridegroom, The Pride of the Village and Mountjoy, complete this collection of classic tales from the inspired pen of Washington Irving, one of America's greatest writers. Lady with the Little Dog and Other Stories, 1896-1904 Penguin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"The Lady with the Little Dog and Other Stories 1896-1904" is an enchanting collection of tales which showcase Anton Chekhov at the height of his power as a writer. This "Penguin Classics" edition is translated by Ronald Wilks with an introduction by Paul Debreczeny. In the final years of his life, Chekhov produced some of the stories that rank among his masterpieces, and some of the most highly-regarded works in Russian literature. The poignant "The Lady with the Little Dog" and "About Love" examine the nature of love outside of marriage - its romantic idealism and the fear of disillusionment. And in stories such as "Peasants", "The House with the Mezzanine" and "My Life" Chekhov paints a vivid picture of the conditions of the poor and of their powerlessness in the face of exploitation and hardship. With the works collected here, Chekhov moved away from the realism of his earlier tales - developing a broader range of characters and subject matter, while forging the spare minimalist style that would inspire such modern short-story writers as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Ronald Wilks's translation is accompanied by an introduction in which Paul Debreczeny discusses the themes that Chekhov adopted in his mature work. This edition also includes a publishing history and notes for each story, a chronology and further reading. Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was born in Taganrog, a port on the sea of Azov. In 1879 he travelled to Moscow, where he entered the medical faculty of the university, graduating in 1884. During his university years, he supported his family by contributing humorous stories and sketches to magazines. He published his first volume of stories, "Motley Tales", in 1886, and a year later his second volume "In the Twilight", for which he received the Pushkin Prize. Today his plays, including "Uncle Vanya", "The Seagull", and "The Cherry Orchard" are recognised as masterpieces the world over. If you enjoyed "The Lady with the Little Dog" you might like Leo Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories", also available in "Penguin Classics".
