LOVE & OTHER STORIES - in spite of David Drebin being a master of staging, the figures entangled in their emotions all seem to feel unobserved and safe. We remain unaware about the causes of the passionate feelings of his female characters, their experiences before being captured in their apparently agitated moods. One has to create a story behind these photos and this way embark on an exciting journey into the imagination. They remind us of film scenes we have never seen. David Drebin's photos are very expressive, matching the subjects that are filled with exciting details. The observer can't escape the mood of each female character highlighted in these photos.

About Love and Other Stories Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

'the greatest short story writer who has ever lived' Raymond Carver's unequivocal verdict on Chekhov's genius has been echoed many times by writers as diverse as Katherine Mansfield, Somerset Maugham, John Cheever and Tobias Wolf. While his popularity as a playwright has sometimes overshadowed his achievements in prose, the importance of Chekhov's stories is now recognized by readers as well as by fellow authors. Their themes - alienation, the absurdity and tragedy of human existence - have as much relevance today as when they were written, and these superb new translations capture their modernist spirit. Elusive and subtle, spare and unadorned, the stories in this selection are among Chekhov's most poignant and lyrical. They include well-known pieces such as 'The Lady with the Little Dog', as well as less familiar work like 'Gusev', inspired by Chekhov's travels in the Far East, and 'Rothschild's Violin', a haunting and darkly humorous tale about death and loss. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

A young Harvard graduate with bright prospects, Bill Frothington is invited on board a steamer hosting a high-school dance, where he meets and falls in love with the seventeen-year-old Mae. As the match is not considered socially advantageous enough, Bill moves on, marries and has a career, but he remains painfully nostalgic for that episode on the river. A poignant tale which touches on the themes of yearning and lost youth that are central to many of Fitzgerald's novels and stories, 'The Love Boat' is here presented with other lesser-known pieces which he wrote in the 1920s and explore the many facets of his creative talents.

In these four stories, written between 1900 and 1902, Joseph Conrad bid gradual farewell to his adventurous life at sea and began to confront the more daunting complexities of life on land in the twentieth century. In "Typhoon" Conrad reveals, in the steadfast courage of an undemonstrative captain and the imaginative readiness of his young first mate, the differences between instinct and intelligence in a partnership vital to human survival. "Falk", the companion sea-story, contrasts, as Conrad once put it, 'common sentimentalism with the frank standpoint of a more or less primitive man', a man with a conscience, however, about the girl he desires. In one of the 'land-stories' Conrad explores the utter isolation of an East European emigrant in England; in the other, the plight of a woman ironically trapped by the unwitting alliance of two retired widowers - each blind in his own way.

"The Lady with the Little Dog and Other Stories 1896-1904" is an enchanting collection of tales which showcase Anton Chekhov at the height of his power as a writer. This "Penguin Classics" edition is translated by Ronald Wilks with an introduction by Paul Debreczeny. In the final years of his life, Chekhov produced some of the stories that rank among his masterpieces, and some of the most highly-regarded works in Russian literature. The poignant "The Lady with the Little Dog" and "About Love" examine the nature of love outside of marriage - its romantic idealism and the fear of disillusionment. And in stories such as "Peasants", "The House with the Mezzanine" and "My Life" Chekhov paints a vivid picture of the conditions of the poor and of their powerlessness in the face of exploitation and hardship. With the works collected here, Chekhov moved away from the realism of his earlier tales - developing a broader range of characters and subject matter, while forging the spare minimalist style that would inspire such modern short-story writers as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Ronald Wilks's translation is accompanied by an introduction in which Paul Debreczeny discusses the themes that Chekhov adopted in his mature work. This edition also includes a publishing history and notes for each story, a chronology and further reading. Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was born in Taganrog, a port on the sea of Azov. In 1879 he travelled to Moscow, where he entered the medical faculty of the university, graduating in 1884. During his university years, he supported his family by contributing humorous stories and sketches to magazines. He published his first volume of stories, "Motley Tales", in 1886, and a year later his second volume "In the Twilight", for which he received the Pushkin Prize. Today his plays, including "Uncle Vanya", "The Seagull", and "The Cherry Orchard" are recognised as masterpieces the world over. If you enjoyed "The Lady with the Little Dog" you might like Leo Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories", also available in "Penguin Classics".

Rip van Winkle is an amiable man whose home and farm suffer from his lazy neglect; a familiar figure about the village, he is loved by all except his wife. One autumn day he escapes her nagging to wander up into the mountains, and there after drinking some liquor offered to him by a band of very strange folk, he settles down under a shady tree and falls asleep. He wakes up twenty years later and returns to his village to find that not only is his wife dead but war and revolution have changed many things. He, on the other hand, although older is not appreciably wiser and soon slips back into his idle habits. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tells of conscientious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. When Frederick wakes up in his hospital bed after a traumatic car crash there is a disturbing rift in his memory. He is haunted by images of a dark-haired woman with intense eyes and by the knowledge that somehow this woman holds the key to his missing past. Will solving the puzzle offer him peace at last, or will it simply stir up a pain that can never fully heal? An act of thoughtless racism causes ripples across generations; an overheard conversation points the way to new love; a young boy's struggle to support his family offers the perfect solution for lonely soldiers' wives. These are stories of struggle and enlightenment, and of the perseverance of human compassion even in the cruelty of war. They turn an irreverent humour on the dark side of communism and, as in the case of Frederick, they show us the moving and indelible ways in which the past will for ever act upon the present. Arthur Friedberg is Dutch, of Polish descent. Born in the north-east of Poland, in 1941 he was deported to Siberia together with his parents, where he spent five years, returning to Poland in 1946. After a temporary democratisation of the country, at the end of 1956, still a student, Friedberg became involved in the growing movement of famous students' theatres and film clubs. He is a chemist by profession (PhD, MSc, Eng) and worked for sixteen years as a scientist at technical universities across Poland and Sweden, and afterwards for many years in industry in the Netherlands and France. Aside from his professional engagements, he continued his artistic activities throughout the 1960s. He emigrated from Poland in 1969 and is now retired and living in the Netherlands. He is also the author of a novel, A Long-postponed Visit, published in 2005 by Athena Press.

Call of the Wild, White Fang and Other Stories Penguin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"The Call of the Wild, White Fang and Other Stories" collects some of Jack London's most profound and moving allegorical tales. This "Penguin Classics" edition is edited by Andrew Sinclair with an introduction by James Dickey. "The Call of the Wild", London's masterpiece about a dog learning to survive in the wilderness, sees pampered pet Buck snatched from his home and set to work as a sled-dog. White Fang, set in the frozen tundra and boreal forests of Canada's Yukon territory, is the story of a wolf-dog struggling to survive in a human society every bit as violent as the natural world. This volume of Jack London's famed stories of the North also includes "Batard", in which an abused dog takes revenge on his owner; and "Love of Life", in which an injured prospector, abandoned by his partner, must struggle home alone through the wilderness, stalked by a lone wolf. In his introduction, James Dickey probes London's strong personal and literary identification with the wolf-dog as a symbol and totem. Andrew Sinclair, London's official biographer and the volume's editor, provides a brief account of London's life as a sailor, desperado, socialist, adventurer and acclaimed author. Jack London (1876-1916) was born John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco, California. By the age of sixteen he had left school, worked in a canning factory, spent time as an oyster pirate and been a member of the Fish Patrol in the San Francisco Bay. In 1893 he joined a sealing cruise, which took him as far abroad as Japan. In 1896 he was caught up in the gold rush to the Klondike river in north-west Canada, which became the inspiration for "The Call of the Wild" (1903) and "White Fang" (1906). If you enjoyed "The Call of the Wild", you might like Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories", also available in "Penguin Classics".
