Opis - Good Practice is a course for doctors and medical students who need to communicate with patients in English, and can be used in the classroom or for self-study. Good Practice focuses on the language and communication skills that doctors need to make consultations more effective through a focus on five elements of good communication: verbal communication, active listening, voice management, non-verbal communication and cultural awareness. The course teaches learners how to sensitively handle a range of situations such as taking a patient history, breaking bad news, examining a patient and describing treatment options, as well as preparing doctors for dealing with different types of patients, from children to the elderly. With reference to numerous medical communication experts, and through exposure to authentic clinical scenarios, the course demonstrates the impact of good communication on the doctor-patient relationship and enables students to become confident and effective practitioners in English. The Teacher's Book is an invaluable tool for anyone wishing to use Good Practice in the classroom. As well as guiding the teacher through the activities, each unit offers background information to the unit topic, notes on medical terminology, pronunciation guidance and suggestions for further reading. 'Only with the greatest of simplifications, for the sake of convenience, can we say Africa. In reality, except as a geographical term, Africa doesn't exist'. Ryszard Kapuscinski has been writing about the people of Africa throughout his career. In a study that avoids the official routes, palaces and big politics, he sets out to create an account of post-colonial Africa seen at once as a whole and as a location that wholly defies generalised explanations. It is both a sustained meditation on the mosaic of peoples and practises we call 'Africa', and an impassioned attempt to come to terms with humanity itself as it struggles to escape from foreign domination, from the intoxications of freedom, from war and from politics as theft. The Beginning: Collision, Ghana 1958 More than anything, one is struck by the light. Light everywhere. Brightness everywhere. Everywhere, the sun. Just yesterday, an autumnal London was drenched in rain. The airplane drenched in rain. A cold, wind, darkness. But here, from the morning

Opis - Our text is centred on the study strategies of future teachers. As educators of future teachers, we pose the question whether and how the study strategies, which are being learnt by students during their tertiary education, acquired and reinforced. could become part of their permanent repertoire of behaviour. Our further question was whether those strategies can really lead towards more effective learning and are potentially useful to be passed on to future generations. Czech Republic has witnessed extensive changes in the teaching profesion, partly represented by a change in the role of the teacher, as well as by many social changes leading to new motives, goals and tasks for the generation of future teachers. A reflection on the effects and their consequences for the strategies of young people in teacher training was one of the goals reasons for writing this publication. A such changes are not only specific to Czech education, but are increasingly gaining European - wide attention, our interest was also focused on future teachers from Poland, another European country with similar legal standards and political influences. The answers to these questions can be found in the second part of the book describing the results of two empirical surveys based on a quantitative research pattern. Their aim was to identify and compare preferred learning and reading strategies of Czech and Polish future teachers in the context of current conditions. Developing the Emotionally Literate School Paul Chapman Publishing Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

'As someone with an interest in emotional literacy and in developing emotional literacy work in schools, I found this book an impressive resource. I would recommend it for those interested in this area, those working within schools on emotional literacy, and for school staff interested in developing their schools as emotionally literature organizations' - "Debate". 'This is an authoritative and scholarly book that does not attempt to offer a simple fix - it solution but one that should lead to an informed and workable approach that will address the needs and circumstances of individual schools as such . I would recommend it as an essential read for anyone contemplating the research or promotion of emotional literacy in school' - "Special Children". 'There is much to encourage exploration by schools, educators and managers in an informed way. Helpful appendices list experienced agencies schools may approach in their work on emotional well-being' - "Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties". 'The book provides a useful guide to ways in which school policies for promoting emotional wellbeing can be developed' - "Times Educational Supplement", Teacher. 'This book is written in a refreshingly well-balanced style and it deserves a similarly even-handed review. Katherine Weare never exaggerates a point or pretends to have found the Holy Grail. Instead; each argument is carefully counter pointed by a caveat' - "Nurturing Potential". 'This is a handbook for teachers and LEA??i??i??'s with clearly headed sections, useful tables and list of resources and contacts. There are helpful suggestions for auditing emotional literacy in schools, deciding whether to use off-the-shelf programmes, tailoring programmes to the school's own needs, and working with the wider community' - "The Psychology of Education Review". 'Visionary and easy to read. This vision resides in the authors' convictions about the vital role schools can play in developing and widening the literacy of emotions...worth reading...opens up a picture of what can achieved in schools in the best interests of the children' - "Young Minds Magazine". 'Katherine Weare brings a good track record to this useful handbook. The full list of contacts, sources of support and resources and the useful bibliography are clearly a product of her comprehensive knowledge of the field in UK and beyond. They provide a solid platform for future researches' - "Journal of In-Service Education". Emotional literacy refers to our ability to understand and use information about our own and others' emotional states, with skill and competence. It is increasingly accepted in schools, and this book shows how it is central to mainstream education. The author defines concepts and terms in ways that make sense to practitioners, outlines the scientific evidence behind the concept, explores ways in which schools can become more emotionally literate, and demonstrates the educational benefits. The book is a practical and up-to-date account of ways in which schools can use emotional literacy to realize their goals of school improvement and effectiveness, increased learning, more efficient management of teaching and learning and improved relationships. Katherine Weare shows how emotional literacy can help address persistent educational problems, such as emotional and behavioural disturbance, school exclusion, and teacher stress and disaffection. Emotional literacy is relevant to mainstream education, is most effective when it permeates the whole school culture, ethos, relationships and management. It is as relevant for secondary as it is for primary students, and applies to teachers and parents as well as to students.
