What is the secret to good crime writing? No one better to ask than a group of Australia's leading crime writers. Their conclusions are fascinating, provocative, often surprising, and they are all drawn from the hard school of personal experience. What pieces of advice do the writers have in common? That there is no substitute for hard work! One tells us there is no such thing as writer's block - "just do it" is a common theme. There is a fun part though: research. The writers could not vary more in their research and the way they approach it; from Shane Maloney's near-death experience in a freezer to Leigh Redhead's adventures as a stripper, Barry Maitland's endless walks through the streets of London to Gabrielle Lord's night out at a Gangster and Molls party, the search for ideas and atmosphere is never done and never dull. These writers also read voraciously, and they all give us their five 'must reads' - it's interesting how much they coincide. As do their Rules for Writing. All in all a treasure trove for all fans of crime fiction, be they aspiring writers or simply want to get to know their favourite writers better. Contributors: Kerry Greenwood, Shane Maloney, Peter Corris, Barry Maitland, Garry Disher, Michael Robotham, Gabrielle Lord, Katherine Howell, Liz Porter, Leigh Redhead, Leah Giarratano, Lindy Cameron, Angela Savage, Malla Nunn, Geoffrey Mcgeachin, Lenny Bartulin, Lindsay Simpson, Marele Day, Peter Lawrance, Tara Moss And Adrian Hyland.

A fascinating read of personal experiences from the famed fashion designer that showcases the lives and contributions of iconic women -- from Jackie Kennedy to Elizabeth Taylor to Laura Bush to Princess Diana Arnold Scaasi has been dressing legends for almost five decades. His enduring tenure as one of the world's premier fashion designers and tastemakers has afforded him vast stores of insider knowledge and firsthand perspectives on an array of illustrious personalities who -- in their disparate arenas of high-wattage celebrity and influence -- have defined our contemporary notions of female power and glamour. Here, for the first time, Scaasi invites readers into his glittering A-list realm as he recounts his intimate experiences and interactions with larger-than-life female icons who made their mark in spheres as varied as politics, Hollywood, the music industry, and high society. Scaasi devotes each chapter to a specific woman or to a group of women, including "Broadway Girls," "New York Girls," and "Hollywood Girls." He shares dozens of behind-closed-doors anecdotes exploring what makes these women tick. In candid prose, he recalls what they said and how they acted, and most important, offers keen observations of who they really are underneath his creations. Using a privileged entrée into their private and public lives, Scaasi takes the measure of their impact on the world at large. Here, readers will discover: Joan Crawford's fetish for cleanliness; the dazzling Barbra Streisand's famous Oscar night outfit and her obsession with perfection; Mamie Eisenhower's staunch refusal to wear a bra; the bountiful charms of Joan Sutherland, the opera legend; Mary Tyler Moore's and Sophia Loren's unique glamour; Rose Kennedy's prediction of a future woman president; Aretha Franklin's fear of flying; Scaasi's visits to the White House to his good friend and client Barbara Bush; his confrontations with Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe; and much more! Scaasi dresses only women he genuinely likes, so his tales are never mean-spirited. Instead they spotlight the designer's surprising interactions and often poignant perceptions of Eleanor Roosevelt, Joan Rivers, Louise Nevelson, Natalie Wood, Hillary Clinton, and many others. The book is filled with photographs from the author's personal scrapbooks and fond recollections of some of the world's most beautiful, accomplished, and powerful women. Women I Have Dressed (and Undressed!) is a trove of irresistible insider dish and a tender, humorous memoir of the most influential women of our time.

I hold a master's degree in education, and I am an educator with more than a dozen years of classroom experience in public schools. My experiences in the public schools have been quite varied. I have taught in elementary, middle, and high school. Additionally, I have taught in the capacity of a general education instructor and as a special education teacher. The varied experiences have provided me with a wealth of knowledge concerning various topics related to problems facing public schools. As a result, I can speak authoritatively about the depth of these problematic issues as one who has been and currently is in the trenches battling against what ails the public school system. Oh No! It's Much Worse Than You Think is an insider's look at the many problems facing the public school system. The front cover of the book shows an example of how middle school students "write;" to use the term loosely. This lack of writing ability is also a microcosm of all academic diffi culties so many public school students experience. Why do they perform so poorly? Many reasons exist, including behavior problems, uninvolved parents, and undue interference from government offi cials who know little or nothing about what is best for public schools. Perhaps the most prevalent cause of poor student performances is the fact that youngsters are so distracted by insatiable appetites for various forms of entertainment that cause them to be totally disinterested in all things academic. As a result, students are not buying what we as educators are selling.

Summary of the New Ferns Which Have Been Discovered or Described Since 1874 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from A Summary of the New Ferns Which Have Been Discovered or Described Since 1874 The second edition of Hooker and Baker's Synopsis Filicum (now out of print) brings the enumeration of genera and species up to the year 1874. Since that date a large number of novelties have been discovered and described and so much fresh light has been thrown by morphological investigation on the taxonomic relations of the different groups of plants included under Filices that it is time for a new handbook. As there is not any chance of this being produced at present, I propose in this paper to attempt a general summary of what has been added to our knowledge in respect to species during the last sixteen years. I do not intend to describe again the plants that have been described already; but merely to indicate their position in the sequence followed in the Synopsis, in the same way as in the supplement published in the second edition. Most of the larger collections that have been received at Kew have been already published in Britten's Journal of Botany and in the Transactions and Journal of the Linnean Society, but a considerable number of new species which have been received from time to time are still unnoticed. Of many of the plants which have been described by other authors we possess authentic specimens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Star of stage, screen and television, and one of only two people to be awarded two Knighthoods, Sir Derek Jacobi is one of Britain's most distinguished actors. 'If you want to be an actor, don't. If you need to be an actor, do.' The world of theatre could not have been further from Derek's childhood: an only child, born in Leytonstone, London. With his father a department store manager and his mother a secretary, his was very much a working class background. But nonetheless Derek always knew he was going to be an actor, and he remembers clearly the first time he was in costume - draping himself in his mother's glorious wedding veil as he paraded up and down the Essex Road with his friends. A few short years later, at the age of seven, Derek made his acting debut, playing both lead roles in a local library production of The Prince and the Swineherd. By the age of 18 Derek was playing Hamlet (his most famed role) at the Edinburgh festival. He won a scholarship to Cambridge, where he studied and acted alongside other future acting greats including Ian McKellen. His talent was quickly recognised and in 1963 he was invited to become one of the first members of Laurence Olivier's National Theatre. Often admired for his willingness to grapple with even the most dislikeable of characters, Derek Jacobi has worked continuously throughout his career, starring in roles ranging from the lead in I, Claudius to Hitler in Inside the Third Reich and Francis Bacon in the controversial Love Is The Devil. But it is his numerous Shakespearean roles that have gained him worldwide recognition. This book is, however, much more than a career record. Funny, warm and honest, Jacobi brings us his insider's view on the world of acting. From a simple childhood in the East End to the height of fame on stage and screen, Derek recalls his journey in full: from the beginnings of his childhood dreams to the legendary productions, the renowned stars and the intimate off-stage moments.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala...

Excerpt from Much Adoe About Nothing (the Player's Text of 1600, With the Heminges and Condell Text of 1623): With an Introduction Touching the Influence Upon the Shakespeare Plays of the Statute of James I. Concerning "the Abuses of Players" None of the plays have come down to us in a more perfect condition than Much Ado About Noth ing. In the Quarto we have it almost exactly as it came from the author's own hand, printed doubtless from the original manuscript, in the possession of, and belonging to, the Globe Theatre Company. In the Folio we have it as it was acted in his own theatre, under his own supervision, and with the revisions as to stage directions, distribution of speeches, etc., which would be suggested by his experience both as an actor and as a stage man ager. 'When people ask me what I do for a crust and I tell them that I'm a novelist, they immediately assume that my life is a non-stop carousel of limos, television appearances, hair-dos, devoted fans, stalkers and all the glitzy paraphernalia of being a public figure. It's time to set the record straight. I write alone, in a darkened bedroom, wearing my PJs, eating bananas, my laptop on a pillow in front of me ...' Her novels are adored by millions around the world
