The Age of Shiva BLOOMSBURY

Społeczno-obyczajowaPowieść zagraniczna

"In The Age of Shiva India's birth as a new nation parallels a woman's complex psychological journey confronting tradition and modernity. Exchanging sentimentality for clear vision, Suri reveals an immense humanity, and a tenderness for women making their way in a world of men. Drawn by this compelling narrative, I read this marvelous book in one sitting." ?Kiran Desai, author of The Inheritance of Loss, recipient of the Man Booker PrizeFollowing his spectacular debut, The Death of Vishnu, Manil Suri returns with a mesmerizing story of modern India, richly layered with themes from Hindu mythology. The Age of Shiva is at once a powerful story of a country in turmoil and an extraordinary portrait of maternal love.Meera, the narrator, is seventeen years old when she catches her first glimpse of Dev, performing a song so infused with passion that it arouses in her the first flush of erotic longing. She wonders if she can steal him away from Roopa, her older, more beautiful sister, who has brought her along to see him. When Meera?s reverie comes true, it does not lead to the fairy-tale marriage she imagined. She escapes her overbearing father only to find herself thrust into the male-dominated landscape of India after independence. Dev?s family is orthodox and domineering, his physical demands oppressive. His brother Arya lusts after her with the same intensity that fuels his right-wing politics. Although Meera develops an unexpected affinity with her sister-in-law Sandhya, the tenderness they share is as heartbreaking as it is fleeting. It is only when her son is born that Meera begins to imagine a life of fulfillment. She engulfs him with a love so deep, so overpowering, that she must fear its consequences.Meera's unforgettable story, embodying Shiva as a symbol of religious upheaval, places The Age of Shiva among the most compelling novels to emerge from contemporary India.

This is an old man's book, not simply because of my age, but because I am taking one last basket to market, and I want to fill it with as many good eggs as I can find. The title poem is followed by poems for Isabelle and other members of my incredibly loveable family. The next group of poems is a broad mix, the first having been written in recent years; then poems written over my many decades, at one time or another having been considered for a book but rejected, now all have been revised sufficiently well to satisfy my fussy taste. Obviously, I chose everything here and stand by my pickings. Just as clear is that you, dear reader, range over great latitudes with untrammeled feelings. May the muses of poetry bless you.

In this charming and delightful collection of poetry and prose, we are taken through the imaginative journey of a child in rural Wisconsin, a young nurse's experiences in Alaska, and contented married life in northern California. Along the way, we experience the smooth feel of wooden buttons, the smell of prairie grass, the Alaskan northern lights, the frothy waves of the Pacific Coast, and the thick fur of a shaggy dog, all seen through the kind, observant eyes of this gentle poet. This is a book to be savored and treasured like an old friendship. ~~~~ Michelle Demers, Author of Epicenter ~~~~ These are generous poems, rich with unusual associations drawn from daily life and vividly observed memories. More than any poet I have read, Judy Liese is able to reconstruct the ways of being and seeing in childhood. We read of a child who studies a rendered cow, looking deep into the interior for that place where her life once resided...and later learn that a young woman's yes realigns the cosmos. There is confidence, complexity, humor and a deep, almost uncanny connection with all of nature, but especially with animals in Judy Liese's frank, well-grounded way of being in a world where something stirs, ancient, patient, older than earth. She is not afraid to remember where she (or we) came from or wonder where she (or we) might be going. ~~~~ Mary Kay Rummel, Poet Laureate of Ventura County, California Author of What's Left Is The Singing ~~~~ ~~~~ Judy Liese's poetry brims with tenderness and compassion. In this autobiographical collection, she illuminates with clarity and precision the spaces that punctuate the various stages of her life. Her vision sometimes seems to come from outside herself, as in her poem, "My Mother's Wooden Buttons," where she writes, "I see my little yellow dress standing by itself as if made of cardboard." Love, grief, humor, and sensuous images abound. Family, friends, horses, and even earthworms are among her muses. Of her beloved dog Fargo she writes, "He teaches us the benefits of an open heart." And in poem after poem, her writing does the same. ~~~~ Paul Fisher, Author of Rumors of Shore ~~~~ Judy Liese grew up in Wisconsin and began writing poems as soon as she learned to print in block letters in her Big Chief writing pad. As a child, she wrote poems to entertain her friends and family. After graduating from Appleton Senior High School, she studied to be an R.N. at Columbia Hospital School of Nursing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After earning her R.N. degree, she accepted a job as a psychiatric nurse in Anchorage, Alaska, where she survived the 1964 earthquake and got married. For many years she worked as a nurse and wrote poetry, taking writing classes when she could. In her fifties, she earned a B.A. in Literature and a Master's Degree in English and Creative Writing from Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa. Retired now, Judy and Gary, her husband of fifty years, live in Northern California to be close to their son. She has poems published in Lyrical Iowa, as well as in several anthologies. This is her first full-length book of poems.

Po Chu-i Columbia University Press

The T'ang dynasty was the great age of Chinese poetry, and Po Chu-i (772--846) was one of that era's most prolific major poets. His appealing style, marked by deliberate simplicity, won him wide popularity among the Chinese public at large and made him a favorite with readers in Korea and Japan as well. From Po Chu-i's well-preserved corpus -- personally compiled and arranged by the poet himself in an edition of seventy-five chapters -- the esteemed translator Burton Watson has chosen 128 poems and one short prose piece that exemplify the earthy grace and deceptive simplicity of this master poet. For Po Chu-i, writing poetry was a way to expose the ills of society and an autobiographical medium to record daily activities, as well as a source of deep personal delight and satisfaction -- constituting, along with wine and song, one of the chief joys of existence. Whether exposing the gluttony of arrogant palace attendants during a famine; describing the delights of drunkenly chanting new poems under the autumn moon; depicting the peaceful equanimity that comes with old age; or marveling at cool Zen repose during a heat wave...these masterfully translated poems shine with a precisely crafted artlessness that conveys the subtle delights of Chinese poetry.

A total of 15,000 children under the age of fifteen passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp between the years 1942-1944; less than 100 survived. In these poems and pictures drawn by the young inmates of Terezin, we see the daily misery of these uprooted children, as well as their courage and optimism, their hopes and fears. The ghetto of Terezin (Theresienstadt), located in the hills outside Prague, was an unusual concentration camp in that it was created to cover up the Nazi genocide of the Jews. Billed as the "Fuhrer's gift to the Jews", this "model ghetto" was the site of a Red Cross inspection visit in 1944. With its high proportion of artists and intellectuals, culture flourished in the ghetto - alongside starvation, disease, and constant dread of transports to the death camps of the east. Every one of its inhabitants was condemned in advance to die. These innocent and honest depictions allow us to see through the eyes of the children what life was like in the ghetto. The children's poems and drawings, revealing maturity beyond their years, are haunting reminders of what no child should ever have to see. This expanded edition of I Never Saw Another Butterfly is published in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

In 1847 Edward Dickinson's daughter Emily was seventeen, a student at Mary Lyon's female seminary (now Mount Holyoke College) in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Thrilled by the challenges of her education, yet repressed by the school atmosphere, she began writing letters home and to the friends she felt lonely for----passionate letters that reveled in bubbling and irreverent mischief and declared the affectionate intensity of the budding poet. Later, after her death at the age of fifty-five, friends and relatives exchanged misunderstandings of the woman they had known----and of the poetic treasure that they had no sure way of evaluating. Out of these sixty-six imagined letters, Judith Farr, herself a poet and Dickinson scholar, has created a brilliant novel, which, written in the language of Emily Dickinson's contemporaries, lays out the entire emotional spectrum of her life. We see the young Emily groping toward poetic expression. We share the bewilderment of her teachers and friends as the girl reacts with the ingenuity of genius to people, books, and events. We marvel at her private letters "To a Mysterious Person." We smile with her at the confusion of others as they struggle to keep up with the poet's imagination, at those who try to "correct" her mode of expression. We share the experience of the first man to take her photograph. We watch her die, dreadfully and prematurely. When we are done, we have shared in a wondrous mystery, for we are the only ones allowed to know who Emily Dickinson was: these letters are written to us. As Diane Wood Middlebrook has written, "This work of fiction---meticulously researched, delicately attuned to the language of the times---provides an explanation more persuasive than any biography ever will, of what happened to the girl on the brink of womanhood to make her the person who wrote those poems. A startling good read." "Peculiar, incandescent, astonishing" -The New Yorker
