Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... The Age of Shiva BLOOMSBURY
"In The Age of Shiva India's birth as a new nation parallels a woman's complex psychological journey confronting tradition and modernity. Exchanging sentimentality for clear vision, Suri reveals an immense humanity, and a tenderness for women making their way in a world of men. Drawn by this compelling narrative, I read this marvelous book in one sitting." ?Kiran Desai, author of The Inheritance of Loss, recipient of the Man Booker PrizeFollowing his spectacular debut, The Death of Vishnu, Manil Suri returns with a mesmerizing story of modern India, richly layered with themes from Hindu mythology. The Age of Shiva is at once a powerful story of a country in turmoil and an extraordinary portrait of maternal love.Meera, the narrator, is seventeen years old when she catches her first glimpse of Dev, performing a song so infused with passion that it arouses in her the first flush of erotic longing. She wonders if she can steal him away from Roopa, her older, more beautiful sister, who has brought her along to see him. When Meera?s reverie comes true, it does not lead to the fairy-tale marriage she imagined. She escapes her overbearing father only to find herself thrust into the male-dominated landscape of India after independence. Dev?s family is orthodox and domineering, his physical demands oppressive. His brother Arya lusts after her with the same intensity that fuels his right-wing politics. Although Meera develops an unexpected affinity with her sister-in-law Sandhya, the tenderness they share is as heartbreaking as it is fleeting. It is only when her son is born that Meera begins to imagine a life of fulfillment. She engulfs him with a love so deep, so overpowering, that she must fear its consequences.Meera's unforgettable story, embodying Shiva as a symbol of religious upheaval, places The Age of Shiva among the most compelling novels to emerge from contemporary India.

A total of 15,000 children under the age of fifteen passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp between the years 1942-1944; less than 100 survived. In these poems and pictures drawn by the young inmates of Terezin, we see the daily misery of these uprooted children, as well as their courage and optimism, their hopes and fears. The ghetto of Terezin (Theresienstadt), located in the hills outside Prague, was an unusual concentration camp in that it was created to cover up the Nazi genocide of the Jews. Billed as the "Fuhrer's gift to the Jews", this "model ghetto" was the site of a Red Cross inspection visit in 1944. With its high proportion of artists and intellectuals, culture flourished in the ghetto - alongside starvation, disease, and constant dread of transports to the death camps of the east. Every one of its inhabitants was condemned in advance to die. These innocent and honest depictions allow us to see through the eyes of the children what life was like in the ghetto. The children's poems and drawings, revealing maturity beyond their years, are haunting reminders of what no child should ever have to see. This expanded edition of I Never Saw Another Butterfly is published in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

'Only with the greatest of simplifications, for the sake of convenience, can we say Africa. In reality, except as a geographical term, Africa doesn't exist'. Ryszard Kapuscinski has been writing about the people of Africa throughout his career. In a study that avoids the official routes, palaces and big politics, he sets out to create an account of post-colonial Africa seen at once as a whole and as a location that wholly defies generalised explanations. It is both a sustained meditation on the mosaic of peoples and practises we call 'Africa', and an impassioned attempt to come to terms with humanity itself as it struggles to escape from foreign domination, from the intoxications of freedom, from war and from politics as theft. The Beginning: Collision, Ghana 1958 More than anything, one is struck by the light. Light everywhere. Brightness everywhere. Everywhere, the sun. Just yesterday, an autumnal London was drenched in rain. The airplane drenched in rain. A cold, wind, darkness. But here, from the morning

The big picture An essential illustrated collection of earth and human science for curious minds of all ages We are buried beneath mountains of fast accumulating data. In such circumstances, this book, rather than adding to the data load, aims to offer real understanding. James LovelockHuman beings are extraordinary creatures. Intelligent, agile, and curious, we have adapted and invented our way to becoming the most important species on the planet. So great is the extent of our influence, that many speak of a new geological era, the Anthropocene, an age defined by human-induced change to the blue and green globe we call home. Our lofty status comes with responsibility as much as possibility: How should we approach our present and future? What knowledge should we carry with us? Conceived by James Lovelock, inventor of the Gaia theory, this illustrated essay collection brings together an all-star line-up of thinkers and scientists to offer essential understanding about who we are, how we live, and where we might be going.Much as the Gaia theory considers our earth as an integrated whole of living systems, The Earth and I encourages holistic understanding. Across 12 chapters, we take in both the intricate details and immense structures of our species and our planet, from our ever-expanding universe to our minuscule but mighty cells. We see stellar explosions and the layers of life beneath our feet, delve into the neuroscience of decision-making, get to grips with our climate, and contemplate our increasing intimacy with technology. The book s world-class contributors include quantum physicist Lisa Randall, Astronomer Royal Martin Rees, Pulitzer Prize-winning biologist Edward O. Wilson, and Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Eric Kandel. With lively illustrations from British artist Jack Hudson, the result is an inspiration for curious minds young and old, and a trusted tool kit for an informed and enlightened future."

Allan Ahlberg - Bucket Penguin
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The Bucket by Allan Ahlberg - the enthralling childhood story one of Britain's best-loved children's authors 'My mother, who was not my mother, I see her now, her raw red cleaner's hands twisting away at her apron as she struggled to speak. Adoption was a shameful business then in many people's eyes, the babies being mostly illegitimate. Better not speak of it.' Allan Ahlberg was adopted as a baby. In 1938 he was picked up in London by his new mother and taken back to Oldbury in the Black Country. Now one of the most successful children's book writers in the world, in The Bucket he describes an oddly enchanted childhood lived out in an industrial town during the 1940s, in conditions which today we might describe as 'deprived'. He writes of a father in overalls smelling of wood shavings and oil, of a tough and fiercely protective mother who cries when he discovers that he is adopted, of life assurance policies ('GBP6 if the child dies under age 3') and fearsome bacon slicers, of half-remembered trips to his mother's sister's grave and to the bluebell woods. And of his first days at school: 'Allan could do much better. He is most inattentive and dreamy at times' (school report, December 1946). Using a mix of prose and poetry, supported by new drawings by his daughter Jessica and old photographs, The Bucket retrieves a childhood which lovers of Ahlberg's classic picturebooks The Baby's Catalogue, Burglar Bill and Peepo! might feel they have glimpsed before but which are now exquisitely brought to life. This beautiful, exquisitely designed book, which will also appeal to fans of Gervase Phinn, Alan Bennett, Roald Dahl and Nigel Slater's Toast, will be loved by generations of Ahlberg fans. "Allan Ahlberg has a string of children's classics to his name". (Nicolette Jones, Guardian). Born in Croydon but brought up by his adopted parents in the Black Country town of Oldbury, Allan Ahlberg held jobs as a gravedigger, postman and plumber's mate before becoming a teacher. He taught for ten years before collaborating with his wife Janet on a series of much-loved, now classic children's picture books including Peepo!, Burglar Bill, Cops and Robbers, Each Peach Pear Plum, Woof!, Heard it in the Playground, Please Mrs Butler, The Boyhood of Burglar Bill, The Pencil, Friendly Matches, The Improbable Cat, Goldilocks, My Brother's Ghost, The Mighty Slide, Collected Poems, The Boy, the Wolf, the Sheep and the Lettuce and The Ha Ha Bonk Book.
Plauti Bacchides Forgotten Books
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Excerpt from Plauti Bacchides: Edited, With Introduction, Commentary, and Critical Notes (1) Plautus sc. Plotus (an Umbrian word, meaning "flat-footed"), full name Marcus Accius Plautus, or Titus Maccius Plautus, the most famous of the Latin Comic poets, and by far the greater of the two whose Comedies we possess, died, according to Cicero (Brut. xv. 60), in the Consulship of P.Claudius and L. Porcius, Cato being Censor, which was the year B.C. 184. If we follow Ritschl, who has investigated the subject at considerable length, and who holds the opinion that the poet was about thirty years of age before he brought out his first Comedy, he must have been born in B.C. 254. By this calculation Plautus would be seventy years of age at his death; and it is very probably correct, seeing that Cicero (De Senect. xiv. 50) classes him amongst the old men, and mentions that the poet was greatly delighted with his Pseudulus, a reference which would have no meaning had that Comedy not been written when he was at least sixty years of age - an old man. In reference to the age of Plautus at the time he began to write Comedies, we have a passage from Gellius (iii. 3), in which he states that Varro and others have handed down that the poet, after having first amassed money as a stage decorator, or actor's assistant("in operis artificum scenicorum"), and then, having engaged in trade in which he lost it all, came to Rome, and was obliged to hire his services to a miller ('ad circumagendas molas, quae trusatiles appelantur") for the purpose of obtaining a means of living. The time in which he was engaged in these several occupations must have extended over a considerable period of his early life; therefore, we may fairly conclude that the poet could hardly be less than thirty years of age when he began to write. Unlike Terence, who was a slave, and obtained his freedom and a good education at the expense of his master, Plautus, we are told, was the son of free-born, but poor, parents belonging to Sarsina, a small town of Umbria; of his education, except from his Comedies, we know nothing. We can, however, say that he was well versed in his own language, and must have known Greek and Phoenician, if we take Poenelus v. 1, 2 as a specimen of that language. (2) Varro, rir Romanorum eruditissimus, peritissimus linguoe Latina, made a selection of twenty-one Comedies, all of which we possess except the Vidularia, which was lost sometime between the sixth and eleventh centuries, from the great mass of Comedies found in the Indices of the old literati, Stilo, Sedigitus, Claudius, Aurelius, Accius, and Manlius. Gellius (iii. 3) says that as many as 130 were known as "Plautinć" in the time of Varro; and Servius in his Commentary on the Ćneid mentions 100. (See Sec. 9.) Ritschl gives us the names of nineteen others mentioned by Varro as "Plautinć," which he arranges in a second class, because, we suppose, they have been rewritten, remodelled or revised by others after the death of the poet; or it may be that they were written by some old poet and afterwards revised by Plautus. Darkness and Glory BERTRAMS

EMILY BRONTE P This book collects together Emily Bronte's finest poems. /P P EXTRACT FROM THE INTRODUCTION P EMILY BRONTE as a poet is still neglected today. Her novel Wuthering Heights, however, remains one of the great English novels. It continues to sell, continues to be adapted for radio, theatre, film and television, continues to inspire readers and be cited by critics. /P P Wuthering Heights has entered British culture as both a serious work in academic circles and a series of cliches in popular culture. For scholars, Wuthering Heights is a superbly crafted and atmospheric piece of fiction which takes its place beside the great works of the 19th century (Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Middlemarch, Great Expectations, Pride and Prejudice). For feminists, Emily Bronte has been appropriated as a proto-feminist, working largely in isolation in patriarchal Yorkshire, away from the metropolitan centres of culture, yet producing fiery fiction and poetry. For the general reader, Wuthering Heights is a fabulously moody, passionate and romantic book, with a powerful sense of pace, fully rounded characters and a thrill of mystery about it. /P P The wind whistling through the heather in Winter is indeed the atmosphere of Wuthering Heights, and also of Bronte's poetry. In poem after poem we find loving evocations of the moors: we hear of 'the breezy moor' (in "The starry night shall tidings bring"), the 'flowerless moors' (in "How still, how happy! Those are words"), and of 'the moors where the linnet was trilling/ Its song on the old granite stone' (in "Loud without the wind was roaring", the most powerful of Bronte's moor-poems). /P P The key element of the moors is the expanse of sky and the wind that rages across it: the wind is without doubt Bronte's favourite element, and is the sound that accompanies the cliched adaptions of Wuthering Heights. In the poetry we hear of 'The wind in its glory and pride!' ("Loud without the wind was roaring"), 'the life-giving wind' ("High waving heather 'neath stormy blasts bending"), 'That wind, I used to hear it swelling/ With joy divinely deep' ("That wind, I used to hear it swelling"), 'the wailing wind' ("All hushed and still within the house"), 'And winds shall wage a wilder war' ("How still, how happy!"), and 'The wild winds coldly blow' ("The night is darkening round me"). /P P These simple, elemental facts - the heather, the moor, the wind, the night - are what recur in Emily Bronte's poems, time after time. Dells, snow, linnets, rocky crags, greyness, darkness, graves; one can practically see her composing her lines as she sits in a darkened house at night, with the wind whistling outside. /P
