Climate Change and its Effects on Water Resources Springer Netherlands

National and global security can be assessed in many ways but one underlying factor for all humanity is access to reliable sources of water for drinking, sanitation, food production and manufacturing industry. In many parts of the world, population growth and an escalating demand for water already threaten the sustainable management of available water supplies. Global warming, climate change and rising sea level are expected to intensify the resource sustainability issue in many water-stressed regions of the world by reducing the annual supply of renewable fresh water and promoting the intrusion of saline water into aquifers along sea coasts, where 50% of the global population reside. Pro-active resource management decisions are required, but such efforts would be futile unless reliable predictions can be made about the impact of the changing global conditions on the water cycle and the quality and availability of critical water reserves. Addressing this wide spectrum of issues, a team of expert authors discusses here the impacts of climate change on the global water resources, the long-term resource management goals at global and local scales, the data requirements and the scientific and technical advances necessary to mitigate the associated impacts.

Climate Driven Retreat of Mount Baker Glaciers and Changing Water Resources - 2826927135

279,86 zł

Climate Driven Retreat of Mount Baker Glaciers and Changing Water Resources Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book presents the impact of climate change on Mount Baker glaciers, USA, and the rivers surrounding them. Glaciers are natural reservoirs that yield their resource primarily on warm dry summer days when other sources are at their lowest yield. This natural tempering of drought conditions will be reduced as they retreat.§Mount Baker, a volcano in the Cascades of Washington, is currently host to 12 principal glaciers with an area of 36.8 km2. The glaciers yield 125 million cubic meters of water each summer that is a resource for salmon, irrigation and hydropower to the Nooksack River and Baker River watersheds. Recent rapid retreat of all 22 glaciers is altering the runoff from the glaciers, impacting both the discharge and temperature of the Nooksack and Baker River. Over the last 30 years we have spent 270 nights camped on the mountain conducting 10,500 observations of snow depth and melt rate on Mount Baker. This data combined with observations of terminus change, area change and glacier runoff over the same 30 years allow an unusually comprehensive story to be told of the effects of climate change to Mount Baker Glaciers and the rivers that drain them.

Water Resources Research in Northwest China Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book examines the possible impacts of climate change on hydrology and water resources in the arid region of Northwest China, which is one of the world s largest arid places. The first chapter offers an introductory discussion of the physical geography and socioeconomic conditions in the region. Part two discusses climate system and hydrologic system changes and implications of these changes in relation to potential evapotranspiration, the hydrological cycle and the spatiotemporal variations of the snow cover and glaciers through remote sensing, geographic information systems and statistical analysis. The third part of the book focuses on the model description and experimental design for interpreting the hydro-climatic process, emphasizing the integration of water, climate and land ecosystems through field observations and computer-based simulations. Part four examines extreme hydrological events and presents a study using the historical trend method to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of changing temperature and precipitation extremes in hyper-arid Northwest China. A concluding chapter discusses possible strategies for sustainable watershed management. The lessons of this study will prove be useful for arid areas elsewhere in the world.

Impact of Climate Change on Natural Resource Management Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

As climate change takes hold, there is an ever-growing need to develop and apply strategies that optimize the use of natural resources, both on land and in water. This book covers a huge range of strategies that can be applied to various sectors, from forests to flood control. Its aim, as with resource management itself, is to combine economics, policy and science to help rehabilitate and preserve our natural resources.§Beginning with papers on carbon sequestration, including the practice of artificial desertification, the topics move on to cover the use of distributed modeling and neural networks in estimating water availability and distribution. Further chapters look at uncertainty analysis applied to the spatial variation of hydrologic resources, and finally the book covers attempts at estimating meteorological parameters in the context of hydrological variables such as evapo-transpiration from stream flow.§Within the next decade, the effects of climate change will be severe, and felt by ordinary human beings. This book proposes a raft of measures that can mitigate, if not reverse, the impact of global warming on the resources we have all come to depend on.§Key themes: climate change, water availability, neuro-genetic models, carbon sequestration, biomass carbon, remote sensing, distributed hydrologic simulation§Bipal Jana is Senior Research Fellow in the School of Water Resources Engineering. Climate Change: Modeling, Planning and Policy for Agriculture Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

It is well known that the impacts of climate change are tangible and hence there can be no debate about the need for appropriate adaptation measures, on a priority basis. However, it is equally important to recognize the fact that adaptation measures actually represent a dynamic synthesis of interventions pertaining to multiple systems. These are particularly of water, soil characteristics, genotypic and phenotypic variations and their expressions, age-correlated biochemical changes aligned with planting schedules and favorable weather/climate conditions. Nutrients, occurrence and distribution of associated vegetation including crop mixes also influence productivity. The overarching aspect of farming practice wields significant influence on the outcome and hence it is important to be clear about the particular focus of the investigations being carried out and reported in a suitable manner. It is essential to recognize that scientific research in agriculture in India has always produced valuable results of direct relevance to her people. Importantly, preparedness to tackle disasters due to inclement weather system has prominently featured on the agenda. The recent focus on climate change and impacts has provided the necessary impetus to reorganize the framework of investigation to capture the specifics of such impacts. In this context, the importance of micro climate variations too viz-a-viz the larger scales of impacts cannot be overemphasized. It will be useful to also help characterize natural variations versus artificially induced variations, helping us understand the complexities of individual and synergistic impacts too. Obviously, the limits and limitations of models could determine the spread and depth of the outcomes of investigations. Empirical evidences to reinforce assumptions have to also be documented with utmost care; guided by an understanding of the limits of tolerance, limiting factors, and the precautionary principle especially in the public policy interface. The present volume therefore, showcases these strands with the fond hope that they will stimulate further thinking and enable appropriate action.§

Impact of Climate Change on Groundwater Recharge in Shetrunji Basin LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The global warming has changed the climate worldwide. However, the nature and magnitude of the climate change vary in space and time. Its impacts also vary in space as well as time. The climate change will have different impacts in different places on rainfall amount, its intensity, frequency, rainy days, evapo-transpiration etc. These rainfall characteristics and evapo-transpiration ultimately impact on runoff and groundwater recharge also. Therefore, the location specific studies on basin scale are required to assess the impact of climate change on rainfall, runoff and groundwater recharge. The significant increasing trend in annual average of daily maximum, minimum and mean temperature was observed. The annual extreme maximum and minimum temperature showed no trend. The groundwater recharge in the basin during monsoon is found increasing per decade by water balance, Krishna Rao (1970) and water table fluctuation methods respectively due to climate change impacts.
