Climate Driven Retreat of Mount Baker Glaciers and Changing Water Resources - 2826927135

260,68 zł

Climate Driven Retreat of Mount Baker Glaciers and Changing Water Resources Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book presents the impact of climate change on Mount Baker glaciers, USA, and the rivers surrounding them. Glaciers are natural reservoirs that yield their resource primarily on warm dry summer days when other sources are at their lowest yield. This natural tempering of drought conditions will be reduced as they retreat.§Mount Baker, a volcano in the Cascades of Washington, is currently host to 12 principal glaciers with an area of 36.8 km2. The glaciers yield 125 million cubic meters of water each summer that is a resource for salmon, irrigation and hydropower to the Nooksack River and Baker River watersheds. Recent rapid retreat of all 22 glaciers is altering the runoff from the glaciers, impacting both the discharge and temperature of the Nooksack and Baker River. Over the last 30 years we have spent 270 nights camped on the mountain conducting 10,500 observations of snow depth and melt rate on Mount Baker. This data combined with observations of terminus change, area change and glacier runoff over the same 30 years allow an unusually comprehensive story to be told of the effects of climate change to Mount Baker Glaciers and the rivers that drain them.

Water Resources Research in Northwest China Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book examines the possible impacts of climate change on hydrology and water resources in the arid region of Northwest China, which is one of the world s largest arid places. The first chapter offers an introductory discussion of the physical geography and socioeconomic conditions in the region. Part two discusses climate system and hydrologic system changes and implications of these changes in relation to potential evapotranspiration, the hydrological cycle and the spatiotemporal variations of the snow cover and glaciers through remote sensing, geographic information systems and statistical analysis. The third part of the book focuses on the model description and experimental design for interpreting the hydro-climatic process, emphasizing the integration of water, climate and land ecosystems through field observations and computer-based simulations. Part four examines extreme hydrological events and presents a study using the historical trend method to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of changing temperature and precipitation extremes in hyper-arid Northwest China. A concluding chapter discusses possible strategies for sustainable watershed management. The lessons of this study will prove be useful for arid areas elsewhere in the world.

Land Use and Climate Change: A Major Threat in the Mau Forest, Kenya LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Mau Forest is the source of a river network of local and regional importance and one of the five montane water towers of Kenya. Its catchment supports a wealth of biodiversity some of which are of international conservation concerns such as the Mara-Serengeti ecosystems and lakes Nakuru and Natron. The forest is the main source of livelihoods in the Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western Kenya regions. Owing to its high agricultural potential, the Mau has been exploited for agriculture, livestock, mining, timber logging, fuel, urbanization, and settlements. This study was intended to attempt to determine and quantify the possible impacts of land use and climate change on socio-economic activities in the region. The study utilized land cover changes from literature review and interviews with local people, historic climate and river discharge data. Results showed that human activities coupled with population pressure have led to deterioration of the catchment and reduced its capacity for self regeneration. Some impacts include reduced water supply, hydrological changes, food insecurity, biodiversity loss, health problems, social changes and, human-wildlife and inter-ethnic conflicts.

Sociology, Organic Farming, Climate Change and Soil Science - 2826865533

Sociology, Organic Farming, Climate Change and Soil Science Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Sustainable agriculture is a rapidly growing field aiming at producing food and energy in a sustainable way for humans and their children. Sustainable agriculture is a discipline that addresses current issues such as climate change, increasing food and fuel prices, poor-nation starvation, rich-nation obesity, water pollution, soil erosion, fertility loss, pest control, and biodiversity depletion. Novel, environmentally-friendly solutions are proposed based on integrated knowledge from sciences as diverse as agronomy, soil science, molecular biology, chemistry, toxicology, ecology, economy, and social sciences. Indeed, sustainable agriculture decipher mechanisms of processes that occur from the molecular level to the farming system to the global level at time scales ranging from seconds to centuries. For that, scientists use the system approach that involves studying components and interactions of a whole system to address scientific, economic and social issues. In that respect, sustainable agriculture is not a classical, narrow science. Instead of solving problems using the classical painkiller approach that treats only negative impacts, sustainable agriculture treats problem sources. Because most actual society issues are now intertwined, global, and fast-developing, sustainable agriculture will bring solutions to build a safer world. This book series gathers review articles that analyze current agricultural issues and knowledge, then propose alternative solutions. It will therefore help all scientists, decision-makers, professors, farmers and politicians who wish to build a safe agriculture, energy and food system for future generations.

National Security and Human Health Implications of Climate Change - 2826723770

1193,72 zł

National Security and Human Health Implications of Climate Change Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Climate change has been identified as one of the greatest threats to humanity of all times. In addition to producing adverse environmental conditions such as rising sea level, drought, crop failure, vector-borne diseases, extreme events, degradation of water/air quality and heat waves, climate change is also considered a threat multiplier that leads to local and international conflicts and armed interventions. Urban areas may bear the brunt of climate change, as they are the centers of human habitation, anthropogenic stressors and environmental degradation, and the ensuing health impacts are of grave societal concern. The papers in this volume span a suite of climate change repercussions, paying particular attention to national security and human health aspects. It is an outcome of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held during April 28-30, 2011 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, sponsored by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program. The contributions cut across the elements of modeling, natural, political and social sciences, engineering, politics, military intervention, urban planning, industrial activities, epidemiology and healthcare.§

Effects of climate change on the profitability of carbon credit sales ibidem

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Nina Becker's research provides a thorough analysis of the economics of carbon sequestration from an interdisciplinary perspective on the impacts of climate change on forest resources. The analysis is based on an integrated assessment that links a climate-yield model with a profitability analysis. In specific, Nina Becker investigates tree productivity under global and regional climate change scenarios. Furthermore, she demonstrates the potential effects of increasing tree productivity on the profitability of carbon credit sales. For this purpose, she conducted a case study on teak (Tectona grandis L.f) plantations on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.§Nina Becker points out the potential of and future challenges for forest plantations in mitigating climate change. The book is aimed at scholars as well as NGOs and policymakers with an interest in forests and climate change.

Sustainability of Integrated Water Resources Management - 2837309827

656,41 zł

Sustainability of Integrated Water Resources Management Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The main focus of this book is sustainable management of water resources in a changing climate. The book also addresses the question of how to define and measure the sustainability of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The sustainability of IWRM is an important issue when planning and/or developing policies that consider the impact of climate change, water governance and ecohydrology in the context of a more holistic approach to ensure sustainable management of water resources. Sustainable IWRM is more about processes, and relatively little systematic or rigorous work has been done to articulate what components are the most essential to ensure the ongoing sustainability of IWRM efforts. The chapters cover topics including global prospective of IWRM; allocation of environmental flows in IWRM; echohydrology, water resources and environmental sustainability; climate change and IWRM; IWRM and water governance including social, economic, public health and cultural aspects; climate change resiliency actions related to water resources management sustainability and tools in support of sustainability for IWRM.§§This book will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, water resources mangers, policy and decision makers, donors, international institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, educators, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. It is a useful reference for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), ecohydrology, climate change impact and adaptations, water governance, environmental flows, geographic information system and modeling tools, water and energy nexus and related topics.§

Cooperation in the Law of Transboundary Water Resources - 2826873378

197,54 zł

Cooperation in the Law of Transboundary Water Resources Cambridge University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Climate change, population growth and the increasing demand for water are all capable of leading to disputes over transboundary water systems. Dealing with these challenges will require the enhancing of adaptive capacity, the improving of the quality of water-resources management and a reduction in the risk of conflict between riparian states. Such changes can only be brought about through significant international cooperation. Christina Leb's analysis of the duty to cooperate and the related rights and obligations highlights the interlinkages between this duty and the principles of equitable and reasonable utilisation and the prevention of transboundary harm. In doing so, she considers the law applicable to both international watercourses and transboundary aquifers, and explores the complementarities and interaction between the rules of international water law and the related obligations of climate change and human rights law.

Water Resources and Food Security in the Vietnam Mekong Delta Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Mekong River has been a main source of conquest, conflict, and cooperation in the Southeast Asian region. Much has been written on the vital and critical importance of the Mekong River fresh water to the sustainable economic development of the Mekong Delta. This book selects the Mekong Delta as a case study of regional cooperation for water and food security for not only for Vietnam but also for the world in a new century of global economy. It focuses not only on the Mekong Delta as an integral part of the River but also on Can Tho City and its 12 provinces that produce over 50 percent of the country s rice output and 60 percent of total fishery output. The book takes a micro approach to examine how each province is adapting to the twin threats of mainstream dams construction and climate change, reducing fresh water flows and increasing saline infusions on its present and future economy. Finally, it reviews the roles of international institutional arrangements, namely the Mekong Committee and the Mekong River Commission, in promoting regional cooperation among the riparian states for political and economic development of the Mekong Delta.§
