Climate Driven Retreat of Mount Baker Glaciers and Changing Water Resources Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book presents the impact of climate change on Mount Baker glaciers, USA, and the rivers surrounding them. Glaciers are natural reservoirs that yield their resource primarily on warm dry summer days when other sources are at their lowest yield. This natural tempering of drought conditions will be reduced as they retreat.§Mount Baker, a volcano in the Cascades of Washington, is currently host to 12 principal glaciers with an area of 36.8 km2. The glaciers yield 125 million cubic meters of water each summer that is a resource for salmon, irrigation and hydropower to the Nooksack River and Baker River watersheds. Recent rapid retreat of all 22 glaciers is altering the runoff from the glaciers, impacting both the discharge and temperature of the Nooksack and Baker River. Over the last 30 years we have spent 270 nights camped on the mountain conducting 10,500 observations of snow depth and melt rate on Mount Baker. This data combined with observations of terminus change, area change and glacier runoff over the same 30 years allow an unusually comprehensive story to be told of the effects of climate change to Mount Baker Glaciers and the rivers that drain them.

Impact of Climate Change on Natural Resource Management Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

As climate change takes hold, there is an ever-growing need to develop and apply strategies that optimize the use of natural resources, both on land and in water. This book covers a huge range of strategies that can be applied to various sectors, from forests to flood control. Its aim, as with resource management itself, is to combine economics, policy and science to help rehabilitate and preserve our natural resources.§Beginning with papers on carbon sequestration, including the practice of artificial desertification, the topics move on to cover the use of distributed modeling and neural networks in estimating water availability and distribution. Further chapters look at uncertainty analysis applied to the spatial variation of hydrologic resources, and finally the book covers attempts at estimating meteorological parameters in the context of hydrological variables such as evapo-transpiration from stream flow.§Within the next decade, the effects of climate change will be severe, and felt by ordinary human beings. This book proposes a raft of measures that can mitigate, if not reverse, the impact of global warming on the resources we have all come to depend on.§Key themes: climate change, water availability, neuro-genetic models, carbon sequestration, biomass carbon, remote sensing, distributed hydrologic simulation§Bipal Jana is Senior Research Fellow in the School of Water Resources Engineering. Impact of Climate Change on Groundwater Recharge in Shetrunji Basin LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The global warming has changed the climate worldwide. However, the nature and magnitude of the climate change vary in space and time. Its impacts also vary in space as well as time. The climate change will have different impacts in different places on rainfall amount, its intensity, frequency, rainy days, evapo-transpiration etc. These rainfall characteristics and evapo-transpiration ultimately impact on runoff and groundwater recharge also. Therefore, the location specific studies on basin scale are required to assess the impact of climate change on rainfall, runoff and groundwater recharge. The significant increasing trend in annual average of daily maximum, minimum and mean temperature was observed. The annual extreme maximum and minimum temperature showed no trend. The groundwater recharge in the basin during monsoon is found increasing per decade by water balance, Krishna Rao (1970) and water table fluctuation methods respectively due to climate change impacts.

Land Use and Climate Change: A Major Threat in the Mau Forest, Kenya LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Mau Forest is the source of a river network of local and regional importance and one of the five montane water towers of Kenya. Its catchment supports a wealth of biodiversity some of which are of international conservation concerns such as the Mara-Serengeti ecosystems and lakes Nakuru and Natron. The forest is the main source of livelihoods in the Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western Kenya regions. Owing to its high agricultural potential, the Mau has been exploited for agriculture, livestock, mining, timber logging, fuel, urbanization, and settlements. This study was intended to attempt to determine and quantify the possible impacts of land use and climate change on socio-economic activities in the region. The study utilized land cover changes from literature review and interviews with local people, historic climate and river discharge data. Results showed that human activities coupled with population pressure have led to deterioration of the catchment and reduced its capacity for self regeneration. Some impacts include reduced water supply, hydrological changes, food insecurity, biodiversity loss, health problems, social changes and, human-wildlife and inter-ethnic conflicts.

National Security and Human Health Implications of Climate Change Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Climate change has been identified as one of the greatest threats to humanity of all times. In addition to producing adverse environmental conditions such as rising sea level, drought, crop failure, vector-borne diseases, extreme events, degradation of water/air quality and heat waves, climate change is also considered a threat multiplier that leads to local and international conflicts and armed interventions. Urban areas may bear the brunt of climate change, as they are the centers of human habitation, anthropogenic stressors and environmental degradation, and the ensuing health impacts are of grave societal concern. The papers in this volume span a suite of climate change repercussions, paying particular attention to national security and human health aspects. It is an outcome of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held during April 28-30, 2011 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, sponsored by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program. The contributions cut across the elements of modeling, natural, political and social sciences, engineering, politics, military intervention, urban planning, industrial activities, epidemiology and healthcare.§

Sociology, Organic Farming, Climate Change and Soil Science Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Sustainable agriculture is a rapidly growing field aiming at producing food and energy in a sustainable way for humans and their children. Sustainable agriculture is a discipline that addresses current issues such as climate change, increasing food and fuel prices, poor-nation starvation, rich-nation obesity, water pollution, soil erosion, fertility loss, pest control, and biodiversity depletion. Novel, environmentally-friendly solutions are proposed based on integrated knowledge from sciences as diverse as agronomy, soil science, molecular biology, chemistry, toxicology, ecology, economy, and social sciences. Indeed, sustainable agriculture decipher mechanisms of processes that occur from the molecular level to the farming system to the global level at time scales ranging from seconds to centuries. For that, scientists use the system approach that involves studying components and interactions of a whole system to address scientific, economic and social issues. In that respect, sustainable agriculture is not a classical, narrow science. Instead of solving problems using the classical painkiller approach that treats only negative impacts, sustainable agriculture treats problem sources. Because most actual society issues are now intertwined, global, and fast-developing, sustainable agriculture will bring solutions to build a safer world. This book series gathers review articles that analyze current agricultural issues and knowledge, then propose alternative solutions. It will therefore help all scientists, decision-makers, professors, farmers and politicians who wish to build a safe agriculture, energy and food system for future generations.

Groundwater as a Key for Adaptation to Changing Climate and Society, 1 Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The book presents an overview of recent advances in knowledge related to the assessment and management of groundwater resources, giving special attention to the uncertainties related to climate change and variability. While proposing strategies of groundwater management as adaptation, alternative and resilience under the changing environments, this book also discusses new directions and initiatives of hydrological study, in particular on the groundwater. Groundwater is a major source of water across much of the world, and acts as a component of the global water cycle on the Earth. Groundwater has the capacity to balance large swings in precipitation and has the potential to supplement surface-water resources when they are close to the limits of sustainability such as during drought. Although groundwater is pivotal to sustain water supplies, these important resources are vulnerable to increased human activities and the uncertain consequences of climate change. This book presents that groundwater with longer resident time of water circulation can be an alternative water resources and environment in changing climate. Assessments of groundwater services and benefit as well as risk are important for sustainable groundwater uses under the climate change. Groundwater which is one of the leys of adaptation to climate change should be treated as common resources and environment beyond the tragedy of the commons and dilemma of the boundaries. While providing a comprehensive description of hydrogeological characteristics of groundwater systems, the present volume also covers important aspects of legal and institutional contexts required for groundwater resources management as well as social and economic considerations. This publication may contribute to an improved understanding of the impacts of climate change and human activity on groundwater resources, provides useful guidance for policy makers and planners to include groundwater into climate change adaptation schemes and strategies.
