Pierre Boulez Studies Cambridge University Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Pierre Boulez is acknowledged as one of the most important composers in contemporary musical life. This collection explores his works, influence, reception and legacy, shedding new light on Boulez's music and its historical and cultural contexts. In two sections that focus firstly on the context of the 1940s and 1950s and secondly on the development of the composer's style, the contributors address recurring themes such as Boulez's approach to the serial principle and the related issues of form and large-scale structure. Featuring excerpts from Boulez's correspondence with a range of his contemporaries here published for the first time, the book illuminates both Boulez's relationship with them and his thinking concerning the challenges which confronted both him and other leading figures of the European avant-garde. In the final section, three chapters examine Boulez's relationship with audiences in the United Kingdom, and the development of the appreciation of his music.

'A Short Histrory of Cultural Studies will prove a seminal text for its author's erudition, wit and unmatched ability to re-embed abstract concepts and debates where they belong - in rich historical, political and cultural contexts' - Cultural Studies Review 'Hartley's book is refreshing, breathtaking, and quite a lot of fun. Given its relatively small size, the book can't do everything, but it does introduce the reader to this rich area of contemporary academic life' - Communication Research Trends 'An entertaining and innovative approach to the history of cultural studies' - TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies 'Cultural studies will never be the same again. Whether you're new to the field or a tired old jade, John Hartley's latest will have you sitting bolt upright in your seat. Each chapter is brimming with insight and innovation. A landmark book' - Toby Miller Professor of Cultural Studies and Cultural Policy, New York University A Short History of Cultural Studies will be devoured by students by virtue of its uncluttered and often wickedly humorous style. But it will also concentrate the minds of those who lecture and research in the subject, by offering a novel and challenging account of the rise and temper of the subject today. This is the first history of cultural studies. Other books have explored the British and North American traditions, but this is the first guide to the ideas, purposes and controversies that have shaped the subject. The author sheds new light on neglected pioneers and a clear route map through the terrain. He provides lively critical narratives on a dazzling array of key figures including, Arnold, Barrell, Bennett, Carey, Fiske, Foucault, Grossberg, Hall, Hawkes, hooks, Hoggart, Leadbeater, Lissistzky, Malevich, Marx, McLuhan, McRobbie, D Miller, T Miller, Morris, Quiller-Couch, Ross, Shaw, Urry, Williams, Wilson, Wolfe and Woolf. He also examines a host of central themes in the subject including literary and political writing, publishing, civic humanism, political economy and Marxism, sociology, feminism, anthropology and the pedagogy of cultural studies.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... The "Queen of Spades and Other Stories" is a collection of short fiction showcasing Alexander Pushkin's application of Romantic sensibilities to uncompromising studies of human frailty. This "Penguin Classics" edition is translated with an introduction by Rosemary Edwards. "The Queen of Spades", one of Pushkin's most popular and chilling short stories, tells of an inveterate card player who develops a dangerous obsession with the secret of an old lady's luck, which he believes will bring him the wealth he craves. "The Negro of Peter the Great", a story based on the life Pushkin's own great-grandfather, is a vivid depiction - and criticism - of both French and Russian society, while "Dubrovsky" is the Byronic tale of a dispossessed young officer. "The Captain's Daughter" tells of a young man sent to military service - based on the actual events of the rebellion against Catherine II, it demonstrates Pushkin's unparalleled skill at blending fiction and history. Together these four stories display the versatility and innovation that earned Pushkin his reputation as a master of prose and established him as the towering figure in Russian literature. Rosemary Edmonds' translation is accompanied by an introduction examining Pushkin's simplicity of style and the powerful influence he exerted on his country's literature. Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was born in Moscow in 1799. Leaving school in 1817, he spent three years in St Petersburg working in the Foreign Office and writing erotic verse. His flirtations with pre-Decembrist movements and his revolutionary verses lead to his exile in 1820. After a stay in the Caucasus and Crimea he was sent to Bessarabia, where he began to write more seriously, beginning Eugene Onegin and Tsygany. In 1831 he retired to a family estate, married, and his literary output slackened. He was mortally wounded in a duel and died in January 1837. If you enjoyed "The Queen of Spades", you might like Fyodor Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot", also available in "Penguin Classics".
Stratification, Rollover and Handling of LNG, LPG and Other Cryogenic Liquid Mixtures Springer, Berlin
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
This short, practical book offers advice on the safe storage, handling and transportation of liquid natural gas (LNG), liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and other cryogenic fluid mixtures. It begins with a review of the physical properties of LNG and LPG, and a brief overview of basic handling and storage methods. The chapters that follow address more in-depth topics such as heat flows in LNG and LPG storage systems, insulation techniques and surface evaporation phenomena. Two chapters are then devoted to the specific sequence of problems caused by stratification and rollover, and the techniques used to manage and alleviate these issues. The book then considers the use of vacuum insulated tanks for the storage of pressurised LNG, and the effective transfer of liquids avoiding 2-phase flow. It concludes with a summary of safe storage and handling protocols, and addresses the specific health issues encountered when dealing with cryogenic liquid mixtures. Throughout the book the author presents real-life case studies to illustrate the situation being discussed. Written in a practical style, it will prove an invaluable companion to anyone working with LNG, LPG or other cryogenic liquid mixtures.

Universities and governments are keen for academics to commercialise their ideas, but good advice on how to do so can be hard to find. Undergraduates and postgraduates are increasingly being encouraged to develop their commercial skills but, unlike other academic subjects, no textbook exists to support this. Enterprise for Life Scientists uniquely fills both gaps; it covers the key issues for academic commercialisation, including IP protection, business planning, funding, and spin-out companies, in a very accessible format with frequent examples drawn from real-life case studies. The book is a 'must-have' for any life science academic thinking about harnessing the commercial potential of their academic work, as well as providing a superb text on which to base courses on enterprise in the undergraduate curriculum. Reviews: Enterprise for Life Scientists is a very informative publication, covering the processes, considerations and skills that are integral to the development of effective strategies for the exploitation of novel ideas generated through biological research. This much needed guide is presented in a highly accessible format and makes good use of real-life case studies to illustrate key points and processes. The style, content and use of features, such as the summary sections at the end of each chapter to reinforce core messages, make this a valuable teaching aid for undergraduate students, postgraduate researchers and trainers alike. To summarise, Enterprise for Life Scientists is a timely publication which provides biologists, from undergraduate to researcher, with a comprehensive guide to knowledge transfer and the commercialisation process. The accessible format and language make this an excellent tool to support enterprise learning. Sarah Wilbourn, University of Durham The UK Government recognises the knowledge-based economy as key to wealth generation and to the well-being of society as a whole. University research, particularly in the life sciences, has a significant role to play in this regard. However, exploitation of knowledge requires particular skills and commercial awareness. It is essential, therefore to inspire biologists to pursue entrepreneurial activities and to underpin this with the necessary skills training. The last few years has seen a growth in the development of courses specifically designed to meet the emerging demand for enterprise training. The School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Durham University has been running its Biology Enterprise module for 7 years. Aimed at undergraduates the module has been designed to introduce students to the commercialisation of biological innovation and to develop their entrepreneurial skills, attitudes and behaviour. Biotechnology is one of, if not, the most regulated sectors and raises highly specific challenges with regard to the commercialisation of new products and process. Durham's Biology Enterprise module is delivered by a mix of academics and practitioners with the necessary sector specific knowledge and experience. However, until now it has only been possible to direct students to general text books on business planning. There has been a real need for a publication that provides sector specific guidance - Enterprise for Life Scientists successfully fills this gap. Opis - Although perhaps better known for his Lieder and piano music, both of the works heard on this new recording by the Daniel Quartet are from Robert Schumann"s significant oeuvre of chamber music. Remarkably, it was within a single year (1842), at the start of his career, that Schumann wrote his three String Quartets Op.41 and the Piano Quintet Op.44; both are now considered pillars of the chamber music repertoire. Schumann was well acquainted with examples of the genre by Haydn, Mozart and Mendelssohn, and passionate studies of Beethoven"s quartets preceded his own works. He adapted elements from these older compositions into his new music, and easily transposed his writing for full orchestra to the smaller ensemble. Schumann"s song-like melodies are brought to life in this lively new release, with the exuberant character of the music palpable in the Daniel Quartet"s performance. Schumann himself described the String Quartet in A major as one of the best things he had ever written, and the Piano Quintet in E flat major is similarly considered one of Schumann"s best compositions. The work was dedicated to his beloved wife Clara, and she played in its premiere in 1843. The Daniel Quartet is renowned for its performances of chamber music at major venues in the USA and across Europe. For the Piano Quintet, they are joined by Hungarian pianist Klára Würtz " one of Brilliant Classics" most prolific artists " whose recent recording of Beethoven violin sonatas received five-star reviews in Diapason and Fanfare. Other information: - Recorded in 2014. - This new recording presents two of Schumann"s best and most famous chamber music works. - Schumann composed his first 23 Opus numbers exclusively for piano solo, then poured out a rich stream of Lieder. He came relatively late to orchestral and chamber music. His Piano Quintet and String Quartets are firmly rooted in the Viennese classical style of Beethoven and Mendelssohn, but Schumann imbued them with his own unique "fantastic? language, a free and dreamlike imagination, full of diverse characters and ideas. - Excellent performances by one of the leading Dutch string quartets, the Daniel Quartet, joined in the Piano Quintet by Klára Würtz, whose Schumann recordings for Brilliant Classics have met with great critial acclaim. - Booklet includes liner notes and artist biographies. Organizational Progeny Oxford University Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
In life, delegation is fundamental. But it is difficult, especially when attempted internationally, as in the long delegation chains to the United Nations family and other global governance structures. There, much hinges on the design of delegation relationships. What prompts another entity to fall in line - and if it does not, what can be done? For international organizations, the conventional answer is simple: when designing institutions, member-states endow themselves with stringent control mechanisms, such as monopolization of financing or vetoes over decision-making in the new body. But as Tana Johnson shows, the conventional answer is outdated. States rarely design international organizations alone. Instead, negotiations usually involve international bureaucrats employed in pre-existing organizations. To unveil these overlooked but pivotal players, Organizational Progeny uses new data on nearly 200 intergovernmental organizations and detailed accounts of the origins of prominent and diverse institutions - the World Food Program, United Nations Development Program, International Energy Agency, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Financial Action Task Force, Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS. When international bureaucrats have a say, they often strive to insulate new institutions against the usual control mechanisms by which states steer, monitor, or reverse organizational activities. This increases control costs for states, is difficult to roll back, and even produces bodies that powerful countries initially opposed. The result is a proliferation of organizational progeny over which national governments are literally losing "control". Johnson explores what this means for the democratic nature of global governance and how practitioners can encourage or staunch this phenomenon. Transformations in Governance is a major new academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states up to supranational institutions, down to subnational governments, and side-ways to public-private networks. It brings together work that significantly advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series targets mainly single-authored or co-authored work, but it is pluralistic in terms of disciplinary specialization, research design, method, and geographical scope. Case studies as well as comparative studies, historical as well as contemporary studies, and studies with a national, regional, or international focus are all central to its aims. Authors use qualitative, quantitative, formal modeling, or mixed methods. A trade mark of the books is that they combine scholarly rigour with readable prose and an attractive production style. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the VU Amsterdam, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford.
Behavior and Ecology of Pacific Salmon and Trout University of Washington Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Few subjects have generated as much emotional dialogue around conflicting scientific and policy agendas as the protection and management of Pacific salmon resources. In this major new work, esteemed fisheries expert Thomas Quinn distils from the vast scientific literature the essential information on the behaviour and ecology of Pacific salmon, including steelhead and cutthroat trout. Unlike other books that examine only selected life stages, habitats, or species, this book - richly illustrated with beautiful photographs and original drawings - thoroughly covers the complete life cycle, emphasizing common themes and differences among the various species of salmon. Representing the range of species and geographic regions, Quinn includes examples from classic studies by pioneers of salmon biology and from the most current research to illustrate the important features of salmon life history and behaviour and the complex physical, biological, and human factors that affect them. "The Behavior and Ecology of Pacific Salmon and Trout" introduces salmon and trout as a group, with a brief description of each species, and compares them to other fishes. This book then follows salmon on their amazing homeward migration from the open ocean, through the complex coastal waters, and upstream to the precise location where they were spawned years earlier. It explains the patterns of mate choice, the competition for nest sites, and the fate of the salmon after their death. It describes the lives of offspring during the months they spend incubating in gravel, growing in fresh water, and migrating out to sea to mature. Quinn emphasizes the importance of salmon to humans and to natural ecosystems and the need to integrate sound biology into conservation efforts. This thorough, up-to-date survey should be on the shelf of anyone with a professional or personal interest in Pacific salmon and trout. Written in a technically accurate but engaging style, it will appeal to a wide range of readers, including students, anglers, biologists, conservationists, legislators, and armchair naturalists.

Respecting Childhood CONTINUUM
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
"Respecting Childhood" critically examines modern day views and practices related to children and childhood. It begins with a discussion of how Western society conceptualizes and often idealizes children as being fragile, innocent and 'incompetent' (or 'immature'). Childhood is often reduced by adults to being seen as preparation for the future, instead of being viewed as a stage of life worthy of respect in its own right. This is evidenced in parenting styles, practices and structures in schools, and media representations. As a result of these views of childhood, many extreme ways of living and working with children have been proposed, from over-permissiveness on the one hand, to a call for a 'back to basics' strict style of discipline and education on the other.Childhood is now seen as being so complex that parents and teachers frequently feel the need to seek out and follow often conflicting 'expert advice' on how to raise and teach children, rather than following their natural instincts and common sense." Respecting Children" advocates a more balanced approach, calling for views of children that allow them to be children, and to live their childhood in the present, rather than constantly having to follow the dubious proposition of 'maximizing' their learning and development in order to become more competitive, successful adults in the future. Each chapter explores a different aspect of children's lives, such as their relationships with others, their capabilities, their behaviour, and looks to how these compare in the different contexts of society, home and school life. 'Windows on research', case studies and discussion questions engage the reader, making this book accessible for undergraduate students of courses such as Childhood Studies, Early Childhood Education and Education Studies, and to those of MA Education and MA Childhood and Society programmes.
