The design is not that readers should study this book, but study the Bible by its aid. To that end it was hoped to be found useful in the conduct of Bible classes in churches, Young Peoples So cieties and Young Men and Young Womens Christian Associa tions, where people are hungering for the Word of God. As a matter of fact, however, pastors have borne witness to its value in their pulpit preparation, and in awakening an interest in Bible study that has told in the increase of church attendance, and the revival of the work of God in other lines. Studies in Milton (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Excerpt from Studies in Milton The changed attitude of recent research towards the Stuart period seems to have affected the conception of Milton very little, perhaps because it has set in principally on points likely to be overlooked by the strict historian of literature. Masson's industrious and monumental Life still offers the starting-point for the study of the poet, though it has grown out of the appreciative position of Macaulay, Carlyle, and Taine, now apparently rejected in other respects. The origin of this treatise will, I think, be clear to anyone acquainted with these facts; as to extent, it was limited to some points long in dispute, or dealt with insufficiently or not at all elsewhere. Concessions to historical detail, the pivot of the treatise, have required many and at times lengthy quotations. This reason also explains e.g. my retaining some accents, p. 14 and pass, (verified from Add. MS. 36354), reprinting Francini's ode from ed. pr. (based upon his MS.) in accordance with the fresh light thrown on this person, and the like. When not otherwise indicated, the quotations from Milton are to be found in Fletcher's (prose) or Beeching's (poetry) ed. The present situation abroad has delayed publication. First by rendering access to England difficult; then by causing my Ms. to lie in vain for half a year in Germany, where the editor of "Anglistische Forschungen" had kindly promised to publish it in that series. On both occasions I received effective assistance from the Royal Swedish Department for Foreign Affairs, on the former also from Sir Gilbert Murray, for which I here beg leave respectfully to express my gratitude. I likewise wish to thank my teacher, Prof. E. Ekwall; F. J. Fielden M. A., my chief helper in revising style and proofs; and the officials of the British Museum, the Public Record Office, Stationers Hall, and similar institutions to which recourse has been had. Studies in Ephesians Mohr Siebeck GmbH & Co. K
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
This volume of collected essays on Ephesians is divided into three sections. The first part deals thoroughly with introductory questions such as composition and style, the relationship to other Early Christian literature and Qumran, authorship (with a new suggestion), addressees and social setting. In the second part the extensive history of Early Christian texts and editions (in the Muratorian canon, the Marcionite prologues and the Euthalian apparatus) with special regard to Ephesians is investigated. The third part is dedicated to the interpretation of texts and themes of special importance for the understanding of this pseudo-pauline letter by one of Paulżs younger disciples and co-workers. Here the theological and liturgical setting is reflected upon. Through all the detailed scrutiny of the history and the semantics of the epistle to the Ephesians, the question of its illocutionary function remains in focus. Not only what the auctor of Ephesians says in his letter but what he does by saying it is the central issue in Nils Alstrup Dahl's life-long interest in this intriguing letter. More than half of these essays have never been published before, and one essay is translated from Norwegian into English for the first time.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Enterprise for Life Scientists Scion Publishing Ltd
Medycyna > English Division
Universities and governments are keen for academics to commercialise their ideas, but good advice on how to do so can be hard to find. Undergraduates and postgraduates are increasingly being encouraged to develop their commercial skills but, unlike other academic subjects, no textbook exists to support this. Enterprise for Life Scientists uniquely fills both gaps; it covers the key issues for academic commercialisation, including IP protection, business planning, funding, and spin-out companies, in a very accessible format with frequent examples drawn from real-life case studies. The book is a 'must-have' for any life science academic thinking about harnessing the commercial potential of their academic work, as well as providing a superb text on which to base courses on enterprise in the undergraduate curriculum. Reviews: Enterprise for Life Scientists is a very informative publication, covering the processes, considerations and skills that are integral to the development of effective strategies for the exploitation of novel ideas generated through biological research. This much needed guide is presented in a highly accessible format and makes good use of real-life case studies to illustrate key points and processes. The style, content and use of features, such as the summary sections at the end of each chapter to reinforce core messages, make this a valuable teaching aid for undergraduate students, postgraduate researchers and trainers alike. To summarise, Enterprise for Life Scientists is a timely publication which provides biologists, from undergraduate to researcher, with a comprehensive guide to knowledge transfer and the commercialisation process. The accessible format and language make this an excellent tool to support enterprise learning. Sarah Wilbourn, University of Durham The UK Government recognises the knowledge-based economy as key to wealth generation and to the well-being of society as a whole. University research, particularly in the life sciences, has a significant role to play in this regard. However, exploitation of knowledge requires particular skills and commercial awareness. It is essential, therefore to inspire biologists to pursue entrepreneurial activities and to underpin this with the necessary skills training. The last few years has seen a growth in the development of courses specifically designed to meet the emerging demand for enterprise training. The School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Durham University has been running its Biology Enterprise module for 7 years. Aimed at undergraduates the module has been designed to introduce students to the commercialisation of biological innovation and to develop their entrepreneurial skills, attitudes and behaviour. Biotechnology is one of, if not, the most regulated sectors and raises highly specific challenges with regard to the commercialisation of new products and process. Durham's Biology Enterprise module is delivered by a mix of academics and practitioners with the necessary sector specific knowledge and experience. However, until now it has only been possible to direct students to general text books on business planning. There has been a real need for a publication that provides sector specific guidance - Enterprise for Life Scientists successfully fills this gap. Opis - Although perhaps better known for his Lieder and piano music, both of the works heard on this new recording by the Daniel Quartet are from Robert Schumann"s significant oeuvre of chamber music. Remarkably, it was within a single year (1842), at the start of his career, that Schumann wrote his three String Quartets Op.41 and the Piano Quintet Op.44; both are now considered pillars of the chamber music repertoire. Schumann was well acquainted with examples of the genre by Haydn, Mozart and Mendelssohn, and passionate studies of Beethoven"s quartets preceded his own works. He adapted elements from these older compositions into his new music, and easily transposed his writing for full orchestra to the smaller ensemble. Schumann"s song-like melodies are brought to life in this lively new release, with the exuberant character of the music palpable in the Daniel Quartet"s performance. Schumann himself described the String Quartet in A major as one of the best things he had ever written, and the Piano Quintet in E flat major is similarly considered one of Schumann"s best compositions. The work was dedicated to his beloved wife Clara, and she played in its premiere in 1843. The Daniel Quartet is renowned for its performances of chamber music at major venues in the USA and across Europe. For the Piano Quintet, they are joined by Hungarian pianist Klára Würtz " one of Brilliant Classics" most prolific artists " whose recent recording of Beethoven violin sonatas received five-star reviews in Diapason and Fanfare. Other information: - Recorded in 2014. - This new recording presents two of Schumann"s best and most famous chamber music works. - Schumann composed his first 23 Opus numbers exclusively for piano solo, then poured out a rich stream of Lieder. He came relatively late to orchestral and chamber music. His Piano Quintet and String Quartets are firmly rooted in the Viennese classical style of Beethoven and Mendelssohn, but Schumann imbued them with his own unique "fantastic? language, a free and dreamlike imagination, full of diverse characters and ideas. - Excellent performances by one of the leading Dutch string quartets, the Daniel Quartet, joined in the Piano Quintet by Klára Würtz, whose Schumann recordings for Brilliant Classics have met with great critial acclaim. - Booklet includes liner notes and artist biographies. Evagrius Ponticus and Cognitive Science Wipf & Stock Publishers
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Description: This study puts the thought of Evagrius Ponticus, a fourth-century theologian, into dialogue with modern cognitive science in regard to the topic of evil, specifically moral evil. Evagrius, in his writings about prayer and the ascetic life, addressed the struggle with personal moral evil in terms of the eight ""thoughts"" or ""demons."" These ""thoughts"" were transmitted by John Cassian to the Western church, and later recast by Gregory the Great as the Seven Deadly Sins. Though present understandings of evil appear to differ greatly from those of Evagrius, his wisdom concerning the battle against evil may prove to be of great help even today. Using the work of Pierre Hadot to recover Evagrius's context, and the work of Paul Ricoeur to discuss how we construct descriptions and myths of evil, Evagrius is brought into dialogue with the cognitive sciences. Using current research, especially the work of Eugene d'Aquili and Andrew Newberg, this study reveals the contemporary relevance of Evagrius' approach to combating evil. In addition, the interdisciplinary study of patristics and cognitive science opens the pathway to a better understanding between Christian tradition and the modern sciences. Endorsements: ""Recent years have seen a resurgence in studies of Evagrius of Pontus bringing his work into a new relevance to today's world. This book by Dr. Tsakiridis examines the work of Evagrius and focuses on a perspective not well-covered in the literature-Evagrius' importance to science especially the cognitive sciences. The book is insightful and represents an important new contribution to studies of Evagrius' work and to the science and religion discussion as a whole. --Gayle E. Woloschak The Feinberg School, Northwestern University ""Few writers in the field of religion and science have the competence to interpret so many and varied texts in patristic mystical and moral theology, contemporary neuro - science, and the turn to spirituality in contemporary theology . . . He shows how both cognitive science and mystical theology can mutually enrich and inform each other in ways unimagined by today's popular neo-atheists and agnostics."" --Robert A. Cathey McCormick Theological Seminary ""In a thoroughly limpid style, George Tsakiridis sets before us an exceptionally interesting project: (1) he centers on sin, evil, and prayer in a way that is central to the religious life; (2) he engages the cutting edge domain of cognitive sciences; and (3) he invites us to take seriously both a much neglected fourth century religious thinker and the most contemporary work of scientists who focus on the mind and its activities."" --Philip Hefner Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Emeritus ""George Tsakiridis artfully compares and clarifies the concepts used by ancient and modern thinkers to describe meditation, ways to deal with good and evil, and mysticism, and adds neuroscientific studies of such experiences. Though the times were vastly different, enlightening human commonalities emerge."" --Carol Rausch Albright Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago About the Contributor(s): George Tsakiridis is currently a Lecturer in Religious Studies at Saint Xavier University, Chicago.
Organizational Progeny Oxford University Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
In life, delegation is fundamental. But it is difficult, especially when attempted internationally, as in the long delegation chains to the United Nations family and other global governance structures. There, much hinges on the design of delegation relationships. What prompts another entity to fall in line - and if it does not, what can be done? For international organizations, the conventional answer is simple: when designing institutions, member-states endow themselves with stringent control mechanisms, such as monopolization of financing or vetoes over decision-making in the new body. But as Tana Johnson shows, the conventional answer is outdated. States rarely design international organizations alone. Instead, negotiations usually involve international bureaucrats employed in pre-existing organizations. To unveil these overlooked but pivotal players, Organizational Progeny uses new data on nearly 200 intergovernmental organizations and detailed accounts of the origins of prominent and diverse institutions - the World Food Program, United Nations Development Program, International Energy Agency, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Financial Action Task Force, Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS. When international bureaucrats have a say, they often strive to insulate new institutions against the usual control mechanisms by which states steer, monitor, or reverse organizational activities. This increases control costs for states, is difficult to roll back, and even produces bodies that powerful countries initially opposed. The result is a proliferation of organizational progeny over which national governments are literally losing "control". Johnson explores what this means for the democratic nature of global governance and how practitioners can encourage or staunch this phenomenon. Transformations in Governance is a major new academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states up to supranational institutions, down to subnational governments, and side-ways to public-private networks. It brings together work that significantly advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series targets mainly single-authored or co-authored work, but it is pluralistic in terms of disciplinary specialization, research design, method, and geographical scope. Case studies as well as comparative studies, historical as well as contemporary studies, and studies with a national, regional, or international focus are all central to its aims. Authors use qualitative, quantitative, formal modeling, or mixed methods. A trade mark of the books is that they combine scholarly rigour with readable prose and an attractive production style. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the VU Amsterdam, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford.

Complete Songs Brilliant Classics
Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna
Here?s a set unique on record: Dallapiccola?s song cycles with small ensemble, mostly based on ancient and medieval texts are well-known as a cornerstone of his reputation for the kind of lyrical modernism which flowered in the work of Nono and Berio from the following generation. Like other Italian modernists such as Bruno Maderna, he was no less passionately interested in his cultural heritage represented here by the early-Baroque composers who developed the idea and practice of opera, such as Monteverdi, and Cavalli. He made practical editions for modern performance of many Baroque songs in order to disseminate this music at the time when scholarly interest was just beginning to move beyond academic confines into concert halls and recording studios, at the birth of the historically informed performance movement. As the pianist Filippo Farinelli remarks in the booklet-note, "This is a repertoire that merits a place alongside Britten?s arrangements of Purcell and other famous English composers. Dallapiccola did much more than realise the basso continuo part. Thanks to his musicological studies, his unique artistic taste and his understanding of the great composers of the early 20th century, he was able to breathe new life into early music, allowing listeners to perceive it in fresh, new terms that ring entirely true."Alongside these two volumes of songs by Caccini, Stradella, Frescobaldi and more are placed the two song cycles he conceived for voice and piano accomapaniment. Both use an adapted 12-tone language. Rencesvals from 1946 is a setting of fragments from the medieval Book of Roland (commissioned by Poulenc?s friend, the baritone Pierre Bernac: the two men gave the cycle?s first performance), and the four settings of Antonio Machado date from two years later. Encountering the socialist-realism texts of Machado was a seminal moment for Dallapiccola, whose work consistently protests against oppression. In these brief, high-lying settings we may hear a less sublimated version of the intense lyricism to which Schoenberg aspired in his Book of the Hanging Gardens. The first Recording of the complete songs by Dallapiccola, one of the most influential composers of 20th century Italy. His political engagement and his experiments with the 12-tone technique established him firmly in the European Avant-Garde.The main work on this double CD are the transcriptions he made of 17th and 18th century Italian songs, by Monteverdi, Caldara, Carissimi, Caccini, Durante, Stradella, Legrenzi and others. He wrote brilliantly dry and essential, making intelligent use of counterpoint and canon, with exquisite taste for vocal timbres and polyrhythm. In that sense they are far more ?20th century? than similar transcriptions by other composers (Respighi, Busoni a.o.) who romanticised the original early works. Also included are the two original song cycles by Dallapiccola: Rencesvals and Quattro Liriche di Antonio Machado, fascinating testimony of his unique style, both severe and warmly emotional.Beautifully performed by 4 excellent Italian singers who already recorded successfully the songs by Jolivet (BC9220) and Ravel (BC94743).Scholarly written liner notes by the pianist, Filippo Farinelli.
