The major Islamic organizations that have appeared in Indonesia in the twentieth century-Sarekat Islam, Muhammadijah, Nahdlatul Ulama and Masjumi-have all been representatives of the group that emphasizes traditional Middle Eastern Islamic beliefs and practices. All have been concerned with the primacy of Islamic law, even though their concepts of just what constituted that law were vague and different from one another. All have maintained that religious values are so important that the state should be responsible for assuring the adoption of such values throughout Indonesian society, although again there has been no common concept of what these values actually are or just what the state was to do about them. All have been convinced that the traditional Islamic values are correct and that all of Indonesian society should come to accept this premise, but there has been a wide variety of interpretations as to just how these traditional values should be implemented in contemporary Indonesian life. The value of the Persatuan Islam as a topic for scholarly research lies not in its organization, for it was small and loosely knit, nor does it lie in its participation in Indonesian political life over the past forty-five years, for its activity was incidental and peripheral to the mainstream of political developments. Although its role in religious education made some impact on Indonesian Muslims, it has been far less influential than several other organizations. In the same manner, its press has been influential at times but has never attained the stature and readership among Indonesians accorded the publications of several other Muslim organizations. Rather, the Persatuan Islam is important because it has attempted to define for Indonesian society just what it is that constitutes Islam, what the basic principles of that religion are, and what constitutes proper religious behavior for Muslims. In this presentation, the Persatuan Islam has avoided vague concepts and generalizations-somewhat unusual in Indonesia-and has dealt with the details and substance of religious behavior in Indonesia. Its members have propounded very definite views toward traditional Indonesian culture, toward developments occurring in the twentieth century, toward "Western" culture and toward traditional Muslim religious thought and practices.

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: gut, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institut für England- und Amerikastudien), course: Early Modern England & Islam 1560-1640, language: English, abstract: The troubles with Islam in today s Europe concerning legal and social issues are accompanied by stereotypical visions of the Islamic world. Stereotypes and prejudices play of course a certain role in every representation or vision of the Other. In regard to Islam they are, however, of a particularly long and rich history. Already after one century from its emergence Islam was seen as a danger to Christianity. John of Damascus granted already in 8th century a complete, though totally ignorant view of the Muslim civilization. Muhammad was depicted by him as an Antichrist and he declared Islam to be a conspiracy against Christianity. The medieval reception of Islam is shown very accurately in the famous Divina Comedia by Dante, where the reader finds Mohammed placed nowhere else but in hell: ( ) see how Mahomet is mangled! Before he goes Ali in tears, his face cleft from chin to forelock; and all the others thou seest here were in life sowers of scandal and schism and therefore are thus cloven . Untrue and unfair depictions of Islam in Europe are found in Catholic theology by Thomas Aquinas, who is still regarded by the Church as its most prominent philosopher. Ignorance about Islam may seem understandable as far as fear of religious challenge is concerned, since many critics of Islam felt it was their duty to defend the truth about God. Many of them depicted the Muslim culture in a completely wrong way because of the very fact that they had never been in real contact with that culture. More detailed investigations about what was behind the teachings would, however, needed to be based on direct encounter. Accounts on Islam based on personal experience would have been then at least more objective and neutral but the opposite is the case. In the so-called travel literature depictions of Islam are full of bias, fears and unjust insinuations. The purpose of travel writing in early modern Europe was not to represent Islam as it was, but to prove the distinction between the good and evil, whereas Christianity was meant to be the good and Islam the evil. Representations or rather misrepresentations of Islam in English literature of the Early Modern Period in general and in travel accounts written in that time in particular are the subject of this paper. A general characteristic of travel writing on Islam is given, two selected accounts by William Biddulph and William Lithgow are discussed in a more detailed way.

John L. Esposito is one of the world's leading authorities on Islam. Now, in this brilliant portrait of Islam today--and tomorrow--he draws on a lifetime of thought and research to sweep away the negative stereotypes and provide an accurate, richly nuanced, and revelatory account of the fastest growing religion in the world. Here Esposito explores the major questions and issues that face Islam in the 21st century and that will deeply affect global politics. Are Islam and the West locked in a deadly clash of civilizations? Is Islam compatible with democracy and human rights? Will religious fundamentalism block the development of modern societies in the Islamic world? Will Islam overwhelm the Western societies in which so many Muslim immigrants now reside? Will Europe become Eurabia or will the Muslims assimilate? Which Muslim thinkers will be most influential in the years to come? To answer this last question he introduces the reader to a new generation of Muslim thinkers--Tariq Ramadan, Timothy Winter, Mustafa Ceric, Amina Wadud, and others--a diverse collection of Muslim men and women, both the "Martin Luthers" and the "Billy Grahams" of Islam. We meet religious leaders who condemn suicide bombing and who see the killing of unarmed men, women, and children as "worse than murder," who preach toleration and pluralism, who advocate for women's rights. The book often underscores the unexpected similarities between the Islamic world and the West and at times turns the mirror on the US, revealing how we appear to Muslims, all to highlight the crucial point that there is nothing exceptional about the Muslim faith. Recent decades have brought extraordinary changes in the Muslim world, and in addressing all of these issues, Esposito paints a complex picture of Islam in all its diversity--a picture of urgent importance as we face the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Sociology of Islam GARNET PUBLISHING

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The contribution of Islam to world civilization is undeniable, however in the last one hundred years, Muslims have been faced with all the effects and ramifications of modernity, caused by the emergence of global capitalism. What does modernity ultimately mean for Muslims, and how will the historical precepts of Islam meet with changes in our globalized world? To date, most scholars on Islam have tried to understand Muslim societies from historical observation alone; however, this simplistic academic approach does not allow us to understand the entire transformation that has taken place in Muslim societies. Sociological scholarship, on the other hand, argues that it would be difficult to understand Islam without first understanding the theoretical and practical underpinnings of the social structure of Muslim societies which are embedded in the relationship between religion, the economy, politics and society. This book, therefore, will attempt to make a connection between the economic system and its social and political consequences within Muslim societies. To do this, it will examine the role of Islam within Muslim societies in the context of ongoing and increasingly powerful neoliberal economic processes in a globalized world. The Muslim understanding of secularism, modernity, the state, collective identity, immigration, and Islamic political thought and economic life are all shaped by forces of globalization and new market conditions. However, this is a mutually constitutive process, as Islam also influences the West and its perceptions of Islam because of the interdependent relations brought about by the global economy. These interdependencies create social and political transformation on both sides.

Can Islam be French? UNIVERSITY PRESSES

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"Can Islam Be French?" is an anthropological examination of how Muslims are responding to the conditions of life in France. Following up on his book "Why the French Don't Like Headscarves", John Bowen turns his attention away from the perspectives of French non-Muslims to focus on those of the country's Muslims themselves. Bowen asks not the usual question - how well are Muslims integrating in France? - but, rather, how do French Muslims think about Islam? In particular, Bowen examines how French Muslims are fashioning new Islamic institutions and developing new ways of reasoning and teaching. He looks at some of the quite distinct ways in which mosques have connected with broader social and political forces, how Islamic educational entrepreneurs have fashioned niches for new forms of schooling, and how major Islamic public actors have set out a specifically French approach to religious norms. All of these efforts have provoked sharp responses in France and from overseas centers of Islamic scholarship, so Bowen also looks closely at debates over how - and how far - Muslims should adapt their religious traditions to these new social conditions. He argues that the particular ways in which Muslims have settled in France, and in which France governs religions, have created incentives for Muslims to develop new, pragmatic ways of thinking about religious issues in French society.

Excerpt: Muhammad's wives were the eleven or thirteen women married to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Muslims refer to them as Mothers of the Believers (Arabic: Ummahat ul-Mużminin). Muslims use the term prominently before or after referring to them as a sign of respect. The term is derived from Qur'an 33:6: Muhammad's life is traditionally delineated as two epochs: pre-hijra (emigration) in Mecca, a city in northern Arabia, from the year 570 to 622, and post-hijra in Medina, from 622 until his death in 632. All but two of his marriages were contracted after the Hijra (migration to Medina). During his life Muhammad married eleven or thirteen women depending upon the differing accounts of who were his wives. Muhammad's first marriage lasted 25 years. In Arabian culture, marriage was generally contracted in accordance with the larger needs of the tribe and was based on the need to form alliances within the tribe and with other tribes. Virginity at the time of marriage was emphasized as a tribal honor. Watt states that all of Muhammad's marriages had the political aspect of strengthening friendly relationships and were based on the Arabian custom. Esposito points out that some of Muhammad's marriages were aimed at providing a livelihood for widows. Francis Edwards Peters says that it is hard to make generalizations about Muhammad's marriages: many of them were political, some compassionate, and some perhaps affairs of the heart. At age 25, Muhammad wed his wealthy employer, the 40-year-old merchant Khadijah. This marriage, his first, would be both happy and monogamous; Muhammad would rely on the wealthy Khadijah in many ways, until her death 25 years later. They had two sons, Qasim and Abd-Allah (nicknamed al-żahir and al-żayyib respectively), both died young, and four daughters-Zaynab, Ruqaiya, Umm Kulthum and Fatimah. Shia scholars dispute the paternity of Khadijah's daughters, as they view the first three of them as the daughters from previous marriages and only Fatimah as th

Say a Little Prayer (SALP) provides a fresh, modern means of relating to the spiritual. In our ever more frenetic age, this original and exciting project does not intend to replace or compete with pre-existing religious practices and imagery, but instead to reinterpret the moments of calm offered by religious iconography and text in a contemporary, multicultural way. Uniting spiritual schools of thought from across history and geography, the project presents ten colorful card sets connected with Brazilian Candomble, Buddhism, Catholicism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Judaism, Kabbalah, Islam, Protestantism, and Shinto. Each set contains eleven beautifully designed cards, including one card introducing the religion, and 10 individual icon and prayer cards, which combine an image with a corresponding text. Whether illustrating the exquisite, intricate design of Islamic patterns; the beauty of Hindu goddess Durga; or the detailed figurative symbolism of Kabbalistic imagery, each card is a delicate artwork, as well as an inspiring insight into spiritual thought around the world. SALP is the work of acclaimed creative director Giovanni Bianco and his New York-based Studio65. Brazilian Candomble - Candomble originated in Nigeria, and was brought to Brazil by Africans who had been illegally captured and then sold as slaves. This religion is based on beliefs, practices, and rituals, and above all, on the energy that comes from nature as well as all of nature's elements. Candomble has existed for over 200 years, and today is practiced by believers across the globe. Buddhism - The religion and philosophy that is derived from the teachings of the Buddha, or "enlightened one," who lived in the northern region of India between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE. Approximately 350 million people worldwide adhere to Buddhist teachings, primarily in Asia. Meditation and the observance of moral precepts are central to the practice of Buddhism. Catholicism - There are approximately 1.1 billion Catholics in the world, more than any other Christian group. It is the dominant Christian tradition in many European countries, a major religious tradition in much of Africa, and the religion of most of the population in Central and South America. Catholics believe in the ancient Christian doctrines of The Trinity (God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), the Incarnation of God in Jesus Christ, and the saving work of Jesus in his death and resurrection. Confucianism - The scholarly tradition and way of life that adhere to the teachings of Confucius (K'ung Fu-tzu), who lived in the 6th to 5th centuries BCE. Confucianism, although more a philosophy than a religion, is practiced by more than 300 million people worldwide, primarily in China and Korea. Confucius taught the value of living in peace and harmony as well as consideration and respect for ancestors. Hinduism - The world's third-largest religion with an estimated 850 million practitioners, Hinduism is practiced primarily in India but has followers all over the world. It is considered to be the oldest of the world's major religions. In Hinduism, the whole of creation is seen as the dynamic game of the Trinity of Gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Brahma is the creator of the universe and of all beings. One of the world's major religions with over 1 billion practitioners, Islam (literally "surrender" to Allah) was founded in the 7th century CE by the prophet Muhammad. Although believers in Islam live throughout the globe, it is widely practiced in the Middle East and Africa. Islam is a monotheistic religion, believing Allah to be the one God, with Muhammad as His greatest messenger. Judaism - One of the world's major monotheistic religions, Judaism started as the faith of the ancient Hebrews, and is now practiced throughout the world. Its sacred text is the Torah, consisting of the teachings revealed to Moses by God on Mount Sinai. Additionally, the Talmud, teachings and thoughts of hundreds of rabbis gathered over 15 centuries, remains an essential sacred text in the Jewish faith. Kabbalah - Although primarily associated with Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah is not specifically a Judaic practice; people of many faiths practice Kabbalah. The teachings of Kabbalah include the belief that each person is a work in progress and has the potential for greatness; the goal of Kabbalistic practice is to free oneself from the human ego and create an affinity with the essence of God. Protestantism - Protestant Christianity traces its roots to the Reformation of the Catholic Church begun by Martin Luther in the 16th century. Protestants emphasize the Bible as the only rule of life and faith, and believe that salvation comes by "believing in your heart and confessing with your lips" that Jesus Christ is Lord. They teach that each believer approaches God on his own, without need of priests, saints, or other intermediaries, and that every believer is given grace to interpret the Scriptures. There are about 500 million Protestant Christians in the world. Shinto - Shinto (literally "the way of the gods") is the native religion of Japan. Its origins date to over 1,500 years ago, and Shinto is currently practiced by approximately 100 million people. Shinto worship is rarely congregational, more often done in private.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,4, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences (Wirtschaft), language: English, abstract: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract:§The aim of this thesis is to show the potential Muslims in Germany have concerning their number and financial power. As assumed, whilst developing the idea for this work, no financial institution is existent in Germany which offers banking services in compliance with Islamic law. Would it not make sense to introduce such instruments in a market which accommodates more than 3 million Muslims? Are the hurdles for introduction too high or is the financial potential of the Muslim population too low to care about such questions? They will be answered in this thesis.§To gather information necessary for writing this thesis, the author read various books about Islam, its roots, and its financial systems. The World Wide Web was a valuable source, especially publications of data by statistical offices, ministries, and institutions dealing with the topic. For certain parts specific data were not accessible to the author. For investigation purposes he wrote letters and mails to various institutions to find out that specific data were not available and certain statistical investigations were not undertaken. In that case approximations and extrapolations were used and marked as such.§The author has divided the thesis in four parts. The first chapter, Chapter A Islam History, Cultural Aspects, and Principles for the Financial System , introduces Islam, its roots and foundation about 1,400 years ago. In that chapter basic Islamic principles are explained and their relevance in all aspects of Muslim life is shown. With those principles underlying, a financial system developed which is different from the Western one. The development of the financial system is described as are various Islamic financial tools explained.§In Chapter B Muslims in Germany it is shown how the Muslim community in Germany developed. It is explained when processes of migration started and to what extent they developed. The cultural and educational Status Quo of the Muslim community is analysed, and it is looked at their stand concerning school, work, associations, etc. Thereby Islamically cultural distinctions are outlined and resulting obstacles for integration deduced. Following that, the financial Status Quo is looked at. Facts about Muslim savings are provided and examples of instruments available at the German market, which are in compliance with Islamic law, are described. Out of the outlined facts in the Status Quos a potential analyses is developed. Future scenarios about shifts in the population structure are calculated and thereby resulting changes at the labour market predicted. After combining the analyses it was assumed that changes in the population structure and at the labour market may result in changes in the income structure, which is looked at in the following.§After the Muslim community and its financial situation is analysed, Chapter C - Possibilities for Islamic Products in the German Market describes legal requirements set by German authorities as does it look at Islamic prescriptions for the running of a financial institution. Proposals are given how to harmonise differences to create possibilities for a financial system which encompasses both conventional and Islamic finance. Afterwards descriptions of product examples are provided which are in compliance with German law and with Islamic law. Finally a conventional equity financing model is analysed and ways of its transformation into an Islamically acceptable model are developed. It is calculated if such a model can be operated efficiently and profitably.§In Chapter D Conclusions Deduced from the Thesis final remarks are given concerning results achieved in the process of analysing the marke...
