The Cardboard Shack Beneath The Bridge Castle Quay Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

One of the greatest tragedies of our time is homelessness. In an age of prosperity and plenty, tens of thousands of people have become victims of homelessness. Tim J Huff has been called by Andrew Stawicki of the Toronto Star "as not just another outreach worker, but a tireless activist for the cause of the homeless." Tim is a writer, illustrator and veteran street worker. He has seen first-hand the terrible plight of men, women, children- even entire families, living on the streets of our urban centres. He has listened quietly to their stories, watched them cry beneath the overpasses where they sleep, brought them coffee and sandwiches. He has been spit on and called names while sitting with them as they panhandle from the sidewalk. But when his own daughter, at age 8, fixed him with her gaze one day as they strolled below the Gardiner Expressway and demanded to know why there was a mattress on the ground, he struggled for words to explain that someone slept there and why. After 19 years of working with these poor misunderstood souls, Tim has written and illustrated a book to help adults talk to children about the homeless. Tim, who works for Youth Unlimited, a faith-based charity aimed at helping teens and young adults, has come up with something he hopes will help other parents facing the same dilemma. He both wrote and and illustrated this picture book that lays the groundwork for parents and teachers to start talking about homelessness with children. The book is called The Cardboard Shack Beneath the Bridge. Written in 16 stanzas, each accompanied by a colourful drawing, it gently raises questions in language a preschooler can understand and leaves it to the adult to decide where to take the discussion. As Tim says it so well," I wanted to start with everybody just seeing each other as human beings. Everyone has their own story, whether we know what it is or not." He'd be happy if that's something children could take from this book. The Cardboard Shack is an invitation to learn about real people with real problems. And 'we' are the real solution"

Conversations with Cronkite Center for American History

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Intimate. Revealing. Candid. Published by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, "Conversations with Cronkite" gives readers a rare glimpse into the life and times of Walter Cronkite in his own words. The book contains selections from interviews between the legendary journalist and an experienced oral historian - Cronkite's friend, Dr. Don Carleton. With the publication of "Conversations with Cronkite", readers have the opportunity to discover the behind-the-scenes stories of his life, edited by Carleton to focus on key events, issues, and themes. More than just oral history transcripts, these are the intimate conversations of two friends, covering virtually every aspect of Cronkite's life and career. Illustrated with photographs and archival treasures from the Cronkite Papers, "Conversations with Cronkite" gives readers the opportunity to once again hear the voice of 'the most trusted man in America'. Walter Cronkite on: His famous sign off 'And that's the way it is': I didn't clear it with [CBS] in any way. I started using it, and [Richard Salant] said, 'This presupposes that everything we said is right, that that's the whole picture of the day's news. I don't really think you ought to be doing that'. I think he was correct. But the thing had already caught on. It really was just rolling. So I got to kind of a point of being stubborn about it and said, 'Well, I like it'. [Salant] said, 'Well, it's up to you'. He let it go. It has been much criticized by serious television critics ...because of that argument that ...it was presumptive that everything we said is correct. Which was wrong. I shouldn't have said that...And particularly when we got into controversial subjects like the Vietnam War. In fact, there's a New Yorker cartoon with a guy coming half out of his chair and shouting at his television, saying, 'That's not the way it is'. Being a United Press reporter during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II: God, it was cold. We looked like Washington's army at Valley Forge. At one point, the troops I was with entered a town, and we got into a fire fight right away. It was very intense. My driver and I hopped out of our jeep and got in behind a doorway. The Germans were at one end of the main street and ...it was a pretty good fire fight. I looked up and saw a GI ...leaning out taking a shot or two...I knew this was a story. I yelled out, 'What's your name, soldier'? 'Colonel Jones'. I said, 'Where are you from, what outfit are you with'? He said, 'Mr. Cronkite, I'm your driver'. On Fidel Castro: He was fascinated about ...my war experience. Fascinated about the landings in Normandy. A real war buff. At one point I said, 'I've been in a lot of Communist countries, including living two years in Moscow. I have yet to see a Communist country that understood the necessity of maintenance of ...buildings or anything else'. [Castro] threw up his hands and said, 'Oh, boy, I know that. It's absolutely terrible'. I said, 'Well, why is it'? [Castro] said, 'First of all, it's inherent in the idea of Communism. People don't own things, so they don't take care of them. That's the answer you capitalists give, but it's true'.

Everybody Poops 10 Million Pounds Ulysses Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A classic bathroom reader for adults that presents funny trivia, gross stories, and fascinating facts in an illustrated children's book style New York City has 8.5 million people living in just 305 square miles. The average New Yorker produces just over a pound of poop every single day. That means on any given day New York City flushes down the weight of 700 full grown elephants in fecal matter. So where does all that poop go? Everybody Poops 10 Million Pounds serves up the answer to that curious question as well as many others. More than any technological feat, the sewer system made possible the birth of the modern city. Of course, it wasn't so easy getting there. Everybody Poops 10 Million Pounds takes readers on a filthy ride through the fetid streets of old London, where street-dumped chamber pots led to the scourge of cholera. Readers will explore the pig latrines (yup, pig latrines) of Beijing and witness one of the greatest poop-driven engineering feats of all time--the reversal of the Chicago River. Packed with full color illustrations, it's perfect reading for those leisurely minutes in the john.

Birds and People JONATHAN CAPE

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

There are 10,500 species of bird worldwide and wherever they occur people marvel at their glorious colours and their beautiful songs. We also trap and consume birds of every kind. Yet birds have not just been good to eat. Their feathers, which keep us warm or adorn our costumes, give birds unique mastery over the heavens. Throughout history their flight has inspired the human imagination so that birds are embedded in our religions, folklore, music and arts. Vast in both scope and scale, Birds and People explores and celebrates this relationship and draws upon Mark Cocker's 40 years of observing and thinking about birds. Part natural history and part cultural study, it describes and maps the entire spectrum of our engagements with birds, drawing in themes of history, literature, art, cuisine, language, lore, politics and the environment. In the end, this is a book as much about us as it is about birds. Birds and People has been stunningly illustrated by one of Europe's best wildlife photographers, David Tipling, who has travelled in 39 countries on seven continents to produce a breathtaking and unique collection of photographs. The book is as important for its visual riches as it is for its groundbreaking content. Birds and People is also exceptional in that the author has solicited contributions from people worldwide. Personal anecdotes and stories have come from more than 650 individuals in 81 different countries. They range from university academics to Mongolian eagle hunters, and from Amerindian shamans to some of the most celebrated writers of our age. The sheer multitude of voices in this global chorus means that Birds and People is both a source book on why we cherish birds and a powerful testament to their importance for all humanity.
