### Mathematics of Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flows Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

Large eddy simulation (LES) is a method of scientific computation seeking to predict the dynamics of organized structures in turbulent flows by approximating local, spatial averages of the flow. Since its birth in 1970, LES has undergone an explosive development and has matured into a highly-developed computational technology. It uses the tools of turbulence theory and the experience gained from practical computation. This book focuses on the mathematical foundations of LES and its models and provides a connection between the powerful tools of applied mathematics, partial differential equations and LES. Thus, it is concerned with fundamental aspects not treated so deeply in the other books in the field, aspects such as well-posedness of the models, their energy balance and the connection to the Leray theory of weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. The authors give a mathematically informed and detailed treatment of an interesting selection of models, focusing on issues connected with understanding and expanding the correctness and universality of LES.This volume offers a useful entry point into the field for PhD students in applied mathematics, computational mathematics and partial differential equations. Non-mathematicians will appreciate it as a reference that introduces them to current tools and advances in the mathematical theory of LES.

### Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation I Springer Netherlands

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

Turbulence remains an unsolved problem even though we now know how to produce directly, with the help of modern supercomputers, accurate approximations to the equations that govern turbulent flows. The fact that we can predict some turbulence in this limited sense is nevertheless an enormous step towards the goal of full understanding. Direct numerical simulations and large-eddy simulations are these numerical solutions of turbulence, which reproduce with remarkable fidelity the statistical, structural and dynamical properties of physical turbulent and transitional flows. This volume contains selected papers from the First ERCOFTAC Workshop on Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation, which was held at the University of Surrey, Guildford, U.K. from 28--30 March 1994. The variety of flows now accessible to simulation is evident throughout the volume. Not only are many types of internal and external flow represented, including some complex geometries of engineering or geophysical importance, but the dynamically distinct regimes of incompressible and compressible flow, stratified, buoyant and other thermal flows, and chemically reacting flow are all simulated successfully. This book reveals the current state of direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulation of transitional and turbulent flows, and will be an invaluable reference for all those with an active interest in these techniques.

### Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation V Springer Netherlands

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

This volume contains the Proceedings of DLES-5, the fifth international ERCOFTAC workshop on direct and large-eddy simulation which was held at the Munich university of Technology, August 27-29, 2003. It covers all aspects of DNS and LES, but also hybrid methods like RANS/LES coupling and detached-eddy simulations designed to provide answers to technical flow problems at reasonable computational cost. Being organized in four parts, the book covers issues in LES modelling and numerics in its first part, i.e. subgrid-scale modelling, wall models for LES and numerical techniques as well as error estimation. §Laminar-turbulent transition phenomena in incompressible and compressible flows form the topic of part 2. Turbulent flows involving complex physical phenomena like multiphase and non-Newtonian effects, scalar transport, combustion, compressibility and noise generation are at the heart of part 3. Turbulent flows in complex geometries bridge the gap in part 4 to practical flow configurations in aerodynamics, turbomachinery and several other applied sciences.

### Large Eddy Simulation for Incompressible Flows Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

The first and most exhaustive work of its kind devoted entirely to the subject, Large Eddy Simulation presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient technique for approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids and chooses his topics in treating with care both the mathematical ideas and their applications. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students and engineers. The second edition was a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number of applications. Two entirely new chapters were devoted to the coupling of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. §This 3rd edition adds various sections to the text such as a careful error analysis of filtered density function models and multiscale models. It also contains two new chapters dealing with the mathematical representations of LES and the prediction of active and passive scalar dynamics, which are of considerable interest for engineering and geophysical modeling. The part on geophysical flow has much to offer on a critical current issue.§To quote from the foreword to the third edition written by Charles Meneveau: "... this meticulously assembled and significantly enlarged description of the many aspects of LES will be a most welcome addition to the bookshelves of scientists and engineers in fluid mechanics, LES practitioners, and students of turbulence in general."

### Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation III Springer Netherlands

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

Though there is no doubt about the importance of turbulent flow phenomena in engineering systems, the reliable prediction of turbulence remains an elusive goal. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows is possible at sufficiently low Reynolds numbers, while large-eddy simulation may be applied in the higher Reynolds number range of engineering importance. §A six-month research programme organised in 1999 by the Isaac Newton Institute, University of Cambridge, brought together experts from different communities to develop new understandings of practical and fundamental problems in turbulence. This collection of papers, from one of the symposia held as part of the research programme in conjunction with ERCOFTAC, presents current progress in the use of direct and large-eddy simulation. Describing novel simulations of turbulence and transition and innovative approaches to the mathematics and physics of subgrid closures, the volume gives a clear overview of the status of this important research area and its practical applications. This book should therefore be of interest to all researchers active in this area.

### LESFOIL: Large Eddy Simulation of Flow Around a High Lift Airfoil Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

This volume contains results of a European project on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of the flow around an airfoil. The main objective of the LESFOIL project was to assess the suitability of LES for airfoil flow. In conclusion, preliminary work was carried out such as development of numerical methods, and subgrid modelling in geometrically simple flows such as fully developed channel flow and periodic flow in a channel with a curved hill-shaped surface. Accurate LES of wall-bounded flow requires fine cells in the near-wall region in all coordinate directions. In an attempt to release this constraint, a large part of the LESFOIL project was aimed at developing and validating different approximate near-wall treatments. In the second half of the book, several LESs of the flow around the Aerospatiale-A airfoil are presented, using different numerical methods, grids, SGS models and near-wall treatments.

### Transition, Turbulence, and Noise, 1 Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

Turbulence takes place in most flow situations whethertheyoccur naturally or in technological systems. Therefore, considerable effort is being expended in an attempt to understand the phenomenon of turbulence. The recent discovery ofcoherent structure in turbulent shear flows and the modem developments in computer capabilities have revolutionized research work in turbulence. There is a strong evidence that the coherent structure in turbulent shear flows is reminiscent of nonlinear stability waves. As such, the interest in nonlinear stability waves has increased not only for the understandingofthe latterstages of the laminar-turbulent transition process, but also for understanding the coherent structures in turbulent flows. Also. the advances in computers have made direct numerical simulation possible at Low-Reynolds numbers and large-eddy simulation possible at high Reynolds numbers. This made first-principles prediction of turbulence-generated noise feasible. Therefore, this book aims at presenting a graduate-level introductory study of turbulence while accounting for such recent views of concern to researchers. This book is an outgrowth oflecture notes on the subject offered to graduate students in engineering. The book should be of interest to research engineers and graduatestudents in science and engineering. The theoretical basis presented is sufficient not only for studying the specialized literature on turbulence but also for theoretical investigations on the subject.
