Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Travel Journals of Henrietta Marchant Liston Rowman & Littlefield

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Travel writing has a long history, the accounts as varied as the reasons why people travel. Although most travel publications of the eighteenth century were written by men, those by women, perhaps most famously Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, were also widely read. The Travel Journals of Henrietta Marchant Liston: North America & Lower Canada, 1796-1800 consists of the nine journals that Mrs. Liston kept while she and her husband Robert Liston, the minister from Great Britain (1796-1800), resided in Philadelphia, at that time the capital of the United States. Mrs. Liston wrote her journals (which, with one exception, have never been published) for her personal use as an aide-memoire to share with family and friends. To experience this middle-aged woman's adventurous spirit as she and her husband travel as far south as Charleston, South Carolina and as far north as Quebec, Canada-long before the transportation conveniences and superhighways of modern-day travel-can only be termed amazing. Full of zest, her writing abounds with "you-are-there" moments. Mrs. Liston was genuinely curious about the New World: she wanted to learn about the different regions, to interact with the people who lived there, and to visit its natural wonders. She was astonished by the variety of the North American landscape, particularly its flora. Each journal has an introduction to put Mrs. Liston's narrative in historical context. She is an intelligent and discerning guide to the eastern part of North America at a time of territorial expansion, of dispossession of Indian Nations from their territories by settlers, and of international upheavals. She and Robert Liston, a seasoned diplomat, observed and participated in the tumultuous events of the last years of the eighteenth century: the resignation of President George Washington and the orderly transfer of power to the next elected president; the "Quasi War" with France; and the rise of the political party system, to name but a few. Mrs. Liston's description of their friendship with President and Mrs. Washington is clear-eyed as well as deeply appreciative, bringing those historical figures to life. Mrs. Liston's engaging writing will win the hearts of all readers. For more on this topic, please visit the author's website at www.inthewordsofwomen.com.

Through The Perilous Fight Casemate

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In a rousing account of one of the critical turning points in American history, Through the Perilous Fight tells the gripping story of the burning of Washington and the improbable last stand at Baltimore that helped save the nation and inspired its National Anthem. In the summer of 1814, the United States of America teetered on the brink of disaster. The war it had declared against Great Britain two years earlier appeared headed toward inglorious American defeat. The young nation's most implacable nemesis, the ruthless British Admiral George Cockburn, launched an invasion of Washington in a daring attempt to decapitate the government and crush the American spirit. The British succeeded spectacularly, burning down most of the city's landmarks-including the White House and the Capitol-and driving President James Madison from the area. As looters ransacked federal buildings and panic gripped the citizens of Washington, beleaguered American forces were forced to regroup for a last-ditch defense of Baltimore. The outcome of that "perilous fight" would help change the outcome of the war-and with it, the fate of the fledgling American republic. In a fast-paced, character-driven narrative, Steve Vogel tells the story of this titanic struggle from the perspective of both sides. Like an epic novel, Through the Perilous Fight abounds with heroes, villains, and astounding feats of derring-do. The vindictive Cockburn emerges from these pages as a pioneer in the art of total warfare, ordering his men to "knock down, burn, and destroy" everything in their path. While President Madison dithers on how to protect the capital, Secretary of State James Monroe personally organizes the American defenses, with disastrous results. Meanwhile, a prominent Washington lawyer named Francis Scott Key embarks on a mission of mercy to negotiate the release of an American prisoner. His journey will place him with the British fleet during the climactic Battle for Baltimore, and culminate in the creation of one of the most enduring compositions in the annals of patriotic song: "The Star-Spangled Banner." Like Pearl Harbor or 9/11, the burning of Washington was a devastating national tragedy that ultimately united America and renewed its sense of purpose. Through the Perilous Fight combines bravura storytelling with brilliantly rendered character sketches to recreate the thrilling six-week period when Americans rallied from the ashes to overcome their oldest adversary-and win themselves a new birth of freedom.

Strategist - 2854327992

Strategist PublicAffairs,U.S.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Based on the full cooperation of the subject--with no restraining conditions--"The Strategist" provides an in-depth portrait of a man whose career has been intimately linked to the great transformations in U.S. foreign policy, from the last third of the Cold War, to September 11, 2001, and up to the present. Bartholomew Sparrow brings color and focus to the complex and often secretive nature of U.S. foreign policy and strategic adjustments--an intellectual battlefield on which ideas and worldviews clash, in which economics, politics, and strategic concerns intertwine, and in which private citizens and non-office holders may exert as much influence as highly visible Cabinet officials. Among the most important foreign policy minds of the 20th and early 21st centuries, Brent Scowcroft is also among the least well-known or understood. In a now-famous August 2002 "Wall Street Journal" op-ed titled "Don't Attack Saddam Hussein," Brent Scowcroft, who had been national security advisor under President George H. W. Bush, went to war himself, in a sense, with his closest and longest-standing friends. He noted the scant evidence that tied the Iraqi government to terrorist organizations. He warned that an invasion and occupation of Iraq would be costly and potentially disastrous for a variety of carefully considered reasons. He recommended that the Bush administration work with the U.N. Security Council and wait for definitive proof of Saddam's wrongdoing before taking action. The essay at once made Scowcroft the most outspoken and most credible critic of the Bush administration's plans for war and immediately generated national controversy. It provoked a sudden, deep split in the Republican Party over the plans for war. Vice President Cheney, National Security Advisor Rice, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, and President George W. Bush all vigorously reaffirmed their cause and their course of action, and the media and American public opinion soon fell in line. Clearly, Scowcroft, 88, continues to participate in the most central and important debates over U.S. foreign policy and national security. He has been a leading architect of U.S. foreign policy and grand strategy for almost a half-century, and though long out of office, still gives speeches, makes media appearances, and leads tasks forces and commissions. He is a rare creature, one of the few "wise men" of the nation's capital: someone who is regularly consulted by top government officials in Democratic and Republican administrations, ranking members of the House and Senate from both sides of the aisle, and the country's leading foreign-policy journalists. As recently as April 2009, Scowcroft co-chaired an extensive Council of Foreign Relations study of the U.S. nuclear weapons policy. More than anyone else, he stands at the center of the United States' foreign policy establishment. Most significantly, Scowcroft is trusted--a scarce and typically fleeting quality in Washington--and has been for four decades. The unprecedented insights into the man and his career Sparrow offers in "The Strategist" are vital to anyone who wishes to understand America's changing role in the world.

End of the Cold War Macmillan

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The dismantling of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the spread of Perestroika throughout the former Soviet bloc was a sea change in world history and two years later resulted in the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In The End of the Cold War, acclaimed Russian historian Robert Service examines precisely how that change came about. Drawing on a vast and largely untapped range of sources, he builds a picture of the two men who spearheaded the breakthrough: Ronald Reagan, President of the United States, and Mikhail Gorbachev, last General Secretary of the Soviet Union and first and last President of the USSR. He also analyses the role of influential players not only in America and the USSR, but throughout Eastern and Western Europe, and focuses especially on Pope John Paul II, Lech Watesa and Vaclav Havel. Authoritative, compelling and meticulously researched, this is political history at its best.

Final Days POCKET BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

THE FINAL DAYS is the classic, behind-the-scenes account of Richard Nixon's dramatic last months as president. Moment by moment, Bernstein and Woodward portray the taut, post-Watergate White House as Nixon, his family, his staff, and many members of Congress strained desperately to prevent his inevitable resignation. This brilliant book reveals the ordeal of Nixon's fall from office -- one of the gravest crises in American presidential history. Both devastating character study and essential insight into the workings of a corrupted White House, THE FINAL DAYS is an essential companion volume to the authors' classic ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN.

Memorial Address Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Memorial Address: Delivered at Lafayette College, Founder's Day, October Twenty-Third, 1892 The first step in the founding of Lafayette College was taken on the evening of December 27, 1824, when a small company of earnest and patriotic men met in the little hotel which then stood upon the northeast corner of the public square in Easton. They were men of promptitude in action and at once fixed upon a plan, and gave to the college of their expectation that name which, now borne by the college of our affection, seems so fitting and so full of the inspiration of unselfish devotion. A charter was speedily secured and the Hon. James Madison Porter, LL. D., became the president of the first Board of Trustees. But, though there was a purpose and a plan, for a long time the hand was lacking which should realize them. At last the trustees found the man they sought, and in the providence of God the Rev. George Junkin, D. D., laid the foundations of this institution. On the 9th day of May, 1832, the college began its work on the south bank of the Lehigh River. A more suitable site was shortly afterwards secured on the present campus, and in June, 1833, the ground was broken for the first permanent building. Years of struggle followed the inauguration of the first founder's work. Years of hope and discouragement, years of self-sacrifice and hard earned successes. At last in the dark days of the rebellion the college seemed on the point of failure. Then it was that the trustees calling to their aid the Rev. Wm. C. Cattell, found in him the second founder of the college. By God's grace he brought success out of discouragement, revived the hopes, and re-established the confidence of the community. Speech of R. Wickliffe, Jr. (of Kentucky, ) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Speech of R. Wickliffe, Jr. (Of Kentucky,): Delivered in the National Convention of the Whig Young Men of the United States, Assembled at Baltimore, May 4th 5th, 1840 Mr. Wickliffe, having been selected by the Delegation from Kentucky, to address the Convention on behalf of that Commonwealth, spoke substantially as follows: Mr. President: - An epoch has arrisen in the history of the Whig party. For the first time within the last eight years, we present an undivided front. Hitherto, our strength has been wasted, and our numbers divided between rival candidates, from various quarters of the Union. In a party that was bound together by principle, and not by the strong tie of public plunder, it was natural to expect that men would entertain and indulge personal preferences, and be incapable of that rigid discipline and implicit obedience by which the adherents of power have ever been distinguished. The day of disunion and of defeat is past. Our party is now not only rallied around the same standard, but led on by the same commander. If the bravery of the troops be equal to the skill and gallantry of our veteran leader; if the warworn soldier, covered with laurels in many a hard-fought battle, and decked with bays from many a civic field, be an object worthy of the gratitude and admiration of a generous people; if the genius of American liberty and the spirit of republican institutions be most fully embodied in him who is equally prepared to wield the sword or the plough; if this republic be not yet sunk in corruption and lost to all sense of truth and justice - victory, sure and lasting, awaits us and the great principles which we have so long struggled to uphold. For the brilliant prospect that lies before us; for the new life and zeal that cheer us and our constituents, we are indebted to the deliberations of the Harrisburg Convention. Called into existence by the unanimous voice of the whig party, and composed of some of the most gifted and venerable men of whom the republic could boast, its decree went forth and was received with applauding shouts by Whig America. Onassis METHUEN DRAMA

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Onassis portrays the last years of the life of the wealthy shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who after a notorious affair with Maria Callas, married Jacqueline Kennedy, widow of US President John F. Kennedy, in 1968. A millionaire at 25, he had become one of the world's richest men, but it was the glamour of the women in his life which brought him real fame, causing him to pursue personal vendettas and amassing empires on an international scale. Based in part on Peter Evans' book Nemesis, Onassis is an explosive account of one man's voracious appetite for sex, money and power. The play depicts Onassis' complex interwoven relationships with women and his family, as well as his long-running feud with the Kennedy family and the American establishment. With hints of Greek tragedy and hubris, it explores how those with great wealth and political influence live their lives detached from the moral code and realities of ordinary mortals. Onassis is a revised version of the play which, under its former title Aristo, opened to critical acclaim at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2008.

Oracle Speaks: Warren Buffett In His Own Words Perseus Books Group

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

From his office in Omaha, Nebraska, without even the benefit of a computer, Warren Buffett has racked up an investment record that far surpasses his counterparts on Wall Street-or anyone else in the world, for that matter. While traditionally stock exchanges have returned about 11 percent annually in the past half century, Buffett's investments have by nearly 29 percent a year, solidifying Buffett's conglomerate holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, as the eighth-largest business in the world and netting him $44 billion along the way. Despite this tremendous success, "the Oracle of Omaha" remains modest. He acknowledges that he has a unique ability to evaluate businesses, but he doesn't feel entitled to the vast wealth that ability has earned him. Instead, he likes to say that he was born at the right place and time. This humility in the face of proven talent and innumerable wealth is part of what makes Buffett universally popular-he is one of the world's wealthiest men and yet he is still personable and relatable. For the first time, the most thought-provoking and inspiring quotes from Buffett are now compiled in a single book. The Oracle Speaks: Warren Buffett in His Own Words is a comprehensive guidebook to the inner workings of the Berkshire Hathaway chairman. Hundreds of Buffett's best quotes, comprising thoughts on investing, Wall Street, business, politics, taxes, and life lessons, will provide the most intimate and direct look into the mind of a modern business icon and give readers enough counsel to last a lifetime. Media outlets, financial advisers, politicians, and Americans from Main Street to Wall Street hang on every word Buffett speaks, hoping to gain valuable insight into Buffett's investments and successes. There is possibly no greater stamp of approval in the business world than to have Buffett invest in a company, and few leaders in the course of history have commanded such universally agreed-upon respect. Even beyond his business savvy, Buffett is influential as a progressive thinker and active philanthropist, having pledged to give most of his money to charity through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as foundations run by his three children. It is this humility that consistently draws people to Buffett, and will draw people to The Oracle Speaks. Most recently, inspired by Buffett's New York Times editorial in which he claimed he paid too little in taxes, President Barack Obama and Congress have named a series of tax reforms after Buffett. While the political implications have been controversial, Buffett has retained his reputation as an outspoken and successful business leader. The Oracle Speaks draws from decades of interviews, editorials, and annual shareholder reports, amassing the most complete outline of how Buffett believes a good business is run and a good life is led. It's advice that Buffett has successfully adhered to throughout his 80-plus years, and it is advice now available in the succinct, poignant, gift-friendly package of The Oracle Speaks.
