Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Her Times (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Her Times Hen I undertook to write a Memoir of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, I had little hope that any con siderable gleanings, in the shape of unpublished letters, would have been left by former workers in the same field. By the kindness of the Earl of Harrowby, however, I was permitted to examine the Wortley Montagu Manuscripts at Sandon Hall, and among these I found four or five hundred unpublished letters, many of great interest, relating to the first half of the eighteenth century. Lady Mary was responsible for upwards of a hundred Of these, and Mr. Wortley for fifty or sixty, the remainder being written by relations, or by friends of the family. My heartiest thanks are due to Lord Harrowby for permission to copy the most interesting letters, and also to reproduce his whole length portrait of Lady Mary by Richardson, which forms the frontispiece to this book. Madame de Sevigne (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Madame De Sevigne There are several well-known editions of Madame de Sévigné's Letters. Chief among them are M. de Monmerque's comprehensive and admirably edited volumes. Besides, there are selections for the use of schools, of which Madame Tastu's is, I believe, the standard. An excellent edition, published by Messrs Firmin Didot, has been chiefly used in the compilation of this little handbook. It is preceded by a short memoir by M. Jacquinet, in which it is stated that Madame de Sevigne's Letters had always been admired, and were constantly handed about and copied by her friends, but that it was not till 1726 that the first edition was printed by the Abbé de Bussy, to whom "Pauline" - Madame de Simiane - had given transcripts of many of the originals. The Abbe must also have inherited from his father, Bussy de Rabutin, papers containing the original correspondence between the two cousins. Ingram Bywater Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Ingram Bywater: The Memoir of an Oxford Scholar, 1840-1914 The materials for a memoir of Bywater, compared with those ready to the hand of some biographers, such as those of Jowett for example, are comparatively scanty. He left no diary of any kind, and was in the habit of destroying all private papers. His interests were severely limited. He wrote very few letters of an intimate character, or dealing with subjects out of his own sphere. On the other hand, his life presented a singular unity in all its different aspects. It was always the life of an Oxford scholar. The same characteristics were everywhere traceable both in his intercourse with his friends and in his literary work.
