This volume presents a collection of courses introducing the reader to the recent progress with attention being paid to laying solid grounds and developing various basic tools. An introductory chapter on lattice spin models is useful as a background for other lectures of the collection. The topics include new results on phase transitions for gradient lattice models (with introduction to the techniques of the reflection positivity), stochastic geometry reformulation of classical and quantum Ising models, the localization/delocalization transition for directed polymers. A general rigorous framework for theory of metastability is presented and particular applications in the context of Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics of lattice models are discussed. A pedagogical account of several recently discussed topics in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics with an emphasis on general principles is followed by a discussion of kinetically constrained spin models that are reflecting important peculiar features of glassy dynamics.

The subject of fractional calculus and its applications (that is, convolution-type pseudo-differential operators including integrals and derivatives of any arbitrary real or complex order) has gained considerable popularity and importance during the past three decades or so, mainly due to its applications in diverse fields of science and engineering. These operators have been used to model problems with anomalous dynamics, however, they also are an effective tool as filters and controllers, and they can be applied to write complicated functions in terms of fractional integrals or derivatives of elementary functions, and so on. This book will give readers the possibility of finding very important mathematical tools for working with fractional models and solving fractional differential equations, such as a generalization of Stirling numbers in the framework of fractional calculus and a set of efficient numerical methods. Moreover, we will introduce some applied topics, in particular fractional variational methods which are used in physics, engineering or economics. We will also discuss the relationship between semi-Markov continuous-time random walks and the space-time fractional diffusion equation, which generalizes the usual theory relating random walks to the diffusion equation. These methods can be applied in finance, to model tick-by-tick (log)-price fluctuations, in insurance theory, to study ruin, as well as in macroeconomics as prototypical growth models. All these topics are complementary to what is dealt with in existing books on fractional calculus and its applications currently existing in the market. This book will be written with a trade-off in mind between full mathematical rigor and the needs of readers coming from different applied areas of science and engineering. In particular, the numerical methods listed in the book are presented in a readily accessible way that immediately allows the readers to implement them on a computer in a programming language of their choice.

Preface Constructing nonlinear parameter-dependent mathematical models is essential in modeling in many scientific research fields. The investigation of branching (bifurcating) solutions of such equations is one of the most important aspects in the analysis of such models. The foundations of the theory of bifurca tions for the functional equations were laid in the well known publications by AM. Lyapunov (1906) [1, vol. 4] (on equilibrium forms of rotating liq uids) and E. Schmidt (1908) [1]. The approach proposed by them has been throughly developed and is presently known as the Lyapunov-Schmidt method (see M.M. Vainberg and V.A Trenogin [1, 2]). A valuable part in the founda tions of the bifurcation theory belongs to A. Poincares ideas [1]. Later, to the end of proving the theorems on existence of bifurcation points, infinite-dimensional generalizations of topological and variational methods were proposed by M.A Krasnoselsky [1], M.M. Vainberg [1] and others. A great contribution to the development and applications of the bifurcation theory has been made by a number of famous 20th century pure and applied mathe maticians (for example, see the bibliography in E. Zeidler [1]).

Lee (1987) compared the density-dependence of the vital rates of human and non-human animals. Today, in studies of senescence, reproduction, and individual heterogeneity, the boundaries between animal and human studies are becoming increasingly blurred (Wachter et al. 1997, Carey 2003, Wachter and Bulatao 2003, Carey and Tuljapurkar 2003).

The author has studied abstract parabolic evolution equations and their applications to nonlinear diffusion equations and systems for more than 30 years. He gives first, after reviewing the theory of analytic semigroups, an overview of the theories of linear, semilinear and quasilinear abstract parabolic evolution equations as well as general strategies for constructing dynamical systems, attractors and stable-unstable manifolds associated with those nonlinear evolution equations.§In the second half of the book, he shows how to apply the abstract results to various models in the real world focusing on various self-organization models: semiconductor model, activator-inhibitor model, B-Z reaction model, forest kinematic model, chemotaxis model, termite mound building model, phase transition model, and Lotka-Volterra competition model. The process and techniques are explained concretely in order to analyze nonlinear diffusion models by using the methods of abstract evolution equations.§Thus the present book fills the gaps of related titles that either treat only very theoretical examples of equations or introduce many interesting models from Biology and Ecology, but do not base analytical arguments upon rigorous mathematical theories.

This book provides an introduction to the methods currently available in the field of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to incorporate preference information. The book serves as a reference volume for the readers interested in those methods. In addition to theoretical considerations, numerous illustrative examples are included. Hence, the book can be used as a teaching text as well. Only a modest mathematical background is needed to understand the main principles. The only prerequisites are a) familiarity with linear algebra especially matrix calculus, b) knowledge of the simplex method, and c) familiarity with the use of computer software.§§This book is organized as follows. Chapter 1 provides motivation and introduces to the basic concepts. Chapter 2 provides the basic ideas and models of the Data Envelopment Analysis. The efficient frontier and production possibility set concepts play an important role in all considerations. That's why these concepts are considered closer in Chapter 3. Since the approaches introduced in this study are inspired by Multiple Objective Linear Programming, the basic concepts of this field are reviewed in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 also compares and contracts Data Envelopment Analysis and Multiple Objective Linear Programming providing some cornerstones for approaches presented later in this book. Chapter 6 discusses the traditional approaches to take into account preference information in DEA. In Chapter 7 Value Efficiency is introduced, and in Chapter 8 discusses practical aspects. Some extensions are presented in Chapter 9 and in Chapter 10 Value Efficiency is extended to cover the case, when a production possibility set is not convex. Three implemented applications are reviewed in Chapter 11.§
