### Methods of Contemporary Mathematical Statistical Physics Springer Verlag

**Nauka**

This volume presents a collection of courses introducing the reader to the recent progress with attention being paid to laying solid grounds and developing various basic tools. An introductory chapter on lattice spin models is useful as a background for other lectures of the collection. The topics include new results on phase transitions for gradient lattice models (with introduction to the techniques of the reflection positivity), stochastic geometry reformulation of classical and quantum Ising models, the localization/delocalization transition for directed polymers. A general rigorous framework for theory of metastability is presented and particular applications in the context of Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics of lattice models are discussed. A pedagogical account of several recently discussed topics in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics with an emphasis on general principles is followed by a discussion of kinetically constrained spin models that are reflecting important peculiar features of glassy dynamics.

### Handbook of Mathematical Models in Computer Vision Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

Visual perception refers to the ability of understanding the visual information that is provided by the environment. Such a mechanism integrates several human abilities and was studied by many researchers with different scientific origins including philosophy, physiology, biology, neurobiology, mathematics and engineering. In particular in the recent years an effort to understand, formalize and finally reproduce mechanical visual perception systems able to see and understand the environment using computational theories was made by mathematicians, statisticians and engineers. Such a task connects visual tasks with optimization processes and the answer to the visual perception task corresponds to the lowest potential of a task-driven objective function. In this edited volume we present the most prominent mathematical models that are considered in computational vision. To this end, tasks of increasing complexity are considered and we present the state-of-the-art methods to cope with such tasks. The volume consists of six thematic areas that provide answers to the most dominant questions of computational vision: §Image reconstruction, §Segmentation and object extraction, Shape modeling and registration, §Motion analysis and tracking, §3D from images, geometry and reconstruction §Applications in medical image analysis

### Geographic Spread of Infectious Diseases: Models and Applications Princeton University Press

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

The 1918-19 influenza epidemic killed more than fifty million people worldwide. The SARS epidemic of 2002-3, by comparison, killed fewer than a thousand. The success in containing the spread of SARS was due largely to the rapid global response of public health authorities, which was aided by insights resulting from mathematical models. Models enabled authorities to better understand how the disease spread and to assess the relative effectiveness of different control strategies. In this book, Lisa Sattenspiel and Alun Lloyd provide a comprehensive introduction to mathematical models in epidemiology and show how they can be used to predict and control the geographic spread of major infectious diseases. Key concepts in infectious disease modeling are explained, readers are guided from simple mathematical models to more complex ones, and the strengths and weaknesses of these models are explored. The book highlights the breadth of techniques available to modelers today, such as population-based and individual-based models, and covers specific applications as well. Sattenspiel and Lloyd examine the powerful mathematical models that health authorities have developed to understand the spatial distribution and geographic spread of influenza, measles, foot-and-mouth disease, and SARS. Analytic methods geographers use to study human infectious diseases and the dynamics of epidemics are also discussed. A must-read for students, researchers, and practitioners, no other book provides such an accessible introduction to this exciting and fast-evolving field.

### Fractional Calculus Models and Numerical Methods World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

The subject of fractional calculus and its applications (that is, convolution-type pseudo-differential operators including integrals and derivatives of any arbitrary real or complex order) has gained considerable popularity and importance during the past three decades or so, mainly due to its applications in diverse fields of science and engineering. These operators have been used to model problems with anomalous dynamics, however, they also are an effective tool as filters and controllers, and they can be applied to write complicated functions in terms of fractional integrals or derivatives of elementary functions, and so on. This book will give readers the possibility of finding very important mathematical tools for working with fractional models and solving fractional differential equations, such as a generalization of Stirling numbers in the framework of fractional calculus and a set of efficient numerical methods. Moreover, we will introduce some applied topics, in particular fractional variational methods which are used in physics, engineering or economics. We will also discuss the relationship between semi-Markov continuous-time random walks and the space-time fractional diffusion equation, which generalizes the usual theory relating random walks to the diffusion equation. These methods can be applied in finance, to model tick-by-tick (log)-price fluctuations, in insurance theory, to study ruin, as well as in macroeconomics as prototypical growth models. All these topics are complementary to what is dealt with in existing books on fractional calculus and its applications currently existing in the market. This book will be written with a trade-off in mind between full mathematical rigor and the needs of readers coming from different applied areas of science and engineering. In particular, the numerical methods listed in the book are presented in a readily accessible way that immediately allows the readers to implement them on a computer in a programming language of their choice.

### Mathematical Methods for Elastic Plates Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

Mathematical models of deformation of elastic plates are used by applied mathematicians and engineers in connection with a wide range of practical applications, from microchip production to the construction of skyscrapers and aircraft. This book employs two important analytic techniques to solve the fundamental boundary value problems for the theory of plates with transverse shear deformation, which offers a more complete picture of the physical process of bending than Kirchhoff s classical one.§The first method transfers the ellipticity of the governing system to the boundary, leading to singular integral equations on the contour of the domain. These equations, established on the basis of the properties of suitable layer potentials, are then solved in spaces of smooth (Hölder continuous and Hölder continuously differentiable) functions.§The second technique rewrites the differential system in terms of complex variables and fully integrates it, expressing the solution as a combination of complex analytic potentials.§The last chapter develops a generalized Fourier series method closely connected with the structure of the system, which can be used to compute approximate solutions. The numerical results generated as an illustration for the interior Dirichlet problem are accompanied by remarks regarding the efficiency and accuracy of the procedure.§The presentation of the material is detailed and self-contained, making Mathematical Methods for Elastic Plates accessible to researchers and graduate students with a basic knowledge of advanced calculus.§

### Ordinary Differential Equations with Applications to Mechanics Springer Netherlands

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

The present book has its source in the authors wish to create a bridge between the mathematical and the technical disciplines, which need a good knowledge of a strong mathematical tool. The necessity of such an interdisciplinary work drove the authors to publish a first book to this aim with Editura Tehnica, Bucharest, Romania.§The present book is a new, English edition of the volume published in 1999. It contains many improvements concerning the theoretical (mathematical) information, as well as new topics, using enlarged and updated references. Only ordinary differential equations and their solutions in an analytical frame were considered, leaving aside their numerical approach.§The problem is firstly stated in its mechanical frame. Then the mathematical model is set up, emphasizing on the one hand the physical magnitude playing the part of the unknown function and on the other hand the laws of mechanics that lead to an ordinary differential equation or system. The solution is then obtained by specifying the mathematical methods described in the corresponding theoretical presentation. Finally a mechanical interpretation of the solution is provided, this giving rise to a complete knowledge of the studied phenomenon. §The number of applications was increased, and many of these problems appear currently in engineering.§Audience§Mechanical and civil engineers, physicists, applied mathematicians, astronomers and students. The prerequisites are courses of elementary analysis and algebra, as given at a technical university. ### Principles of Mathematical Petrophysics Oxford University Press

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

The pioneering work of Gus Archie moved log interpretation into log analysis with the introduction of the equation that bears his name. Subsequent developments have mixed empiricism, physics, mathematical algorithms, and geological or engineering models as methods applied to petrophysical measurements in boreholes all over the world. Principles of Mathematical Petrophysics reviews the application of mathematics to petrophysics in a format that crystallizes the subject as a subdiscipline appropriate for the workstations of today. The subject matter is of wide interest to both academic and industrial professionals who work with subsurface data applied to energy, hydrology, and environmental issues. This book is the first of its kind, in that it addresses mathematical petrophysics as a distinct discipline. Other books in petrophysics are either extensive descriptions of tool design or interpretation techniques, typically in an ad hoc treatment. It covers mathematical methods that are applied to borehole and core petrophysical measurements to estimate rock properties of fluid saturation, pore types, permeability, mineralogy, facies, and reservoir characterization. These methods are demonstrated by a variety of case studies and summaries of applications. Principles of Mathematical Petrophysics is an invaluable resource for all people working with data related to petrophysics.

### Abstract Parabolic Evolution Equations and their Applications Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

The semigroup methods are known as a powerful tool for analyzing nonlinear diffusion equations and systems. The author has studied abstract parabolic evolution equations and their applications to nonlinear diffusion equations and systems for more than 30 years. He gives first, after reviewing the theory of analytic semigroups, an overview of the theories of linear, semilinear and quasilinear abstract parabolic evolution equations as well as general strategies for constructing dynamical systems, attractors and stable-unstable manifolds associated with those nonlinear evolution equations.§In the second half of the book, he shows how to apply the abstract results to various models in the real world focusing on various self-organization models: semiconductor model, activator-inhibitor model, B-Z reaction model, forest kinematic model, chemotaxis model, termite mound building model, phase transition model, and Lotka-Volterra competition model. The process and techniques are explained concretely in order to analyze nonlinear diffusion models by using the methods of abstract evolution equations.§Thus the present book fills the gaps of related titles that either treat only very theoretical examples of equations or introduce many interesting models from Biology and Ecology, but do not base analytical arguments upon rigorous mathematical theories.
