Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... The day following the infamous D-Day invasion, author Everett W. Haegele set sail from New York to England with the 7th Armored Division of the U.S. Army to join the Allied offensive in France. Haegele's memoir, based on a diary he kept during his German imprisonment, reveals the intimate details of army life and combat during World War II. Haegele arrived at Omaha Beach a month after the Normandy Invasion, but still in time to witness the chilling aftermath of D-Day. It wasn't long before he and his comrades saw combat. The 7th Division spearheaded for the 3rd Army under General Patton, fighting through France, Belgium, and Holland. In October of 1944, Haegele and a small force of soldiers faced a German Panzer division with orders to delay them for forty-eight hours, but they were overrun and taken prisoner on October 29. Transported deep into the heart of Germany, Haegele spent nearly seven months as a POW and was liberated on May 1, 1945, by the Russian army. Full of vivid detail, Haegele's wartime memoir is a compelling, must-read account for any World War II enthusiast.

Dear Mom and Dad, Love from Vietnam Joseph E. Abodeely

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

1st Air Cavalry Lieutenant Joe Abodeely shipped off to Vietnam at the beginning and height of the Tet Offensive in January 1968. He kept a diary and wrote letters home recounting his experiences in real time about the patrols, the combat air assaults, the discomfort, the anxiety, the elation during major military operations, and his experiences with the Vietnamese people. The year-1968-was one of the most volatile years in Vietnam. It was an interesting year, a year of idealism, a year of protest, a year of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll-the bloodiest year of the war. In the U.S., antiwar protests raged; there was rioting at the Democratic National Convention; the Women's Liberation Movement progressed; the Civil Rights Movement was in full force; and Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated. Young men waited with great anxiety for announcements from the lottery. Some got drafted or enlisted. Others protested against the war, burned their draft cards, or ran off to Canada. Two-thirds of those who served in Vietnam enlisted; one-third was drafted. The NVA were great fighters. They fought the Japanese, later the French, and now the Americans. But the U.S. soldiers were better. It is a truism that the U.S. won nearly 100% of their actions in combat and controlled the areas they chose to control. "Dear Mom and Dad, Love From Vietnam," will allow you to experience the Vietnam War from the eyes of someone who lived through it and recorded actions and events in real time in a year-long diary and in over 50 letters. Abodeely went to Vietnam to help the South Vietnamese people fight the Communist invasion from North Vietnam and Communist Vietcong insurgents. He writes: "There is no 'one' Vietnam experience-there are as many as there are those who went to Vietnam-but this is mine-the combat, the excitement, the discomfort, the fear, the accomplishments, the hubris, the politics, the challenges, and the sex. This is 1968-MY Vietnam experience. "The Vietnam War was just, legal, and truly to defend the freedom of the South Vietnamese. The American military won the Tet Offensive in 1968; brought the war to a successful end in January 1973; and left Vietnam promising to logistically support the South Vietnamese if the North invaded again. Watergate occurred; a newly elected Democrat Congress ended all funding to South Vietnam. The Communist North invaded and took over South Vietnam. These are facts. "Those who say they care about veterans should speak out and show their appreciation for the service of our nation's largest group of living veterans-Vietnam veterans. I have a personal mission to educate everyone about the Vietnam War-its history, its reasons, its battles, its soldiers' heroism and accomplishments, its politics, and the shameful conduct of those who maligned an entire generation who honorably served their country." "Dear Mom and Dad, Love From Vietnam" is a must-read for anyone interested in a true, on the spot account of action and experience of a 1st Air Cavalry combat unit commander in the Vietnam War.

Adrian Mole's pen is scribbling for the twenty-first century. Working as a bookseller and living in Leicester's Rat Wharf; finding time to write letters of advice to Tim Henman and Tony Blair; locked in mortal combat with a vicious swan called Gielgud; measuring his expanding bald spot; and trying to escape the clutches of Marigold and win-over her voluptuous sister Daisy ... Adrian still yearns for a better more meaningful world. And he's not ready to surrender his pen yet ... Monday October 7th Rang my solicitor, David Barwell, on the way to work. His secretary, Angela, said, 'Mr Barwell is busy having an asthma attack due to the new carpet that has been fitted over the weekend.' I advised her to expect a correspondence from Mark B'astard regarding the lease on Unit 4, The Old Battery Factory, Rat Wharf, Grand Union Canal, Leicester. She said bitterly, 'I shan't bother telling Mr Barwell. It's me that does all the work. All he does is sit behind his desk and fiddle with his inhaler.' I had to wait ten minutes outside the shop; Mr Carlton-Hayes had trouble finding a parking space. I watched him walk up the High Street. He looked as if he was on his last legs. I don't know how much longer he can carry on with the shop. This is just my luck. He said, 'Terribly sorry to keep you waiting, my dear.' I took the keys from him and opened the door. Once inside, he leaned against the recent biographies to catch his breath. I said to him, 'If we had a few chairs and sofas in here like I suggested, you could sit down and be comfortable.' He said, 'We're not Habitat, Adrian, my dear, we're booksellers.' I said, 'Customers expect to be able to sit down in bookshops nowadays, and they also expect a cup of coffee and to be able to visit the lavatory.' He said, 'A properly brought-up person micturates and defecates and drinks a cup of coffee before they leave their house.' We had the usual quotient of mad people in during the day. A steam train enthusiast with a ginger beard and sellotaped spectacles asked me if we had a copy of the 1954 Trans-Siberian timetable in Russian. I showed him our Railway section and invited him to search through the mildewed railway ephemera that Mr Carlton-Hayes insists on keeping in stock.   A woman with a crew cut and dangly earrings asked if we were interested in buying a first edition of The Female Eunuch. I wouldn't have bought it. It was in very poor condition, missing its dust jacket, and the pages were covered in annotations and exclamation marks in red ink. But Mr Carlton-Hayes intervened and offered the woman

Much has been written about Neil Armstrong, America's modern hero and history's most famous space traveler. Yet shy of fame and never one to steal the spotlight Armstrong was always reluctant to discuss his personal side of events. Here for the first time is the definitive story of Neil's life of flight he shared for five decades with a trusted friend - Jay Barbree.Working from 50 years of conversations he had with Neil, from notes, interviews, NASA spaceflight transcripts, and remembrances of those Armstrong trusted, Barbree writes about Neil's three passions - flight, family, and friends. This is the inside story of Neil Armstrong from the time he flew combat missions in the Korean War and then flew a rocket plane called the X-15 to the edge of space, to when he saved his Gemini 8 by flying the first emergency return from Earth orbit and then flew Apollo-Eleven to the moon's Sea of Tranquility. Together Neil and Jay discussed everything, from his love of flying, to the war years, and of course his time in space. The book is full of never-before-seen photos and personal details written down for the first time, including what Armstrong really felt when he took that first step on the moon, what life in NASA was like, his relationships with the other astronauts, and what he felt the future of space exploration should be.As the only reporter to have covered all 166 American astronaut flights and moon landings Jay knows these events intimately. Neil Armstrong himself said, "Barbree is history's most experienced space journalist. He is exceptionally well qualified to recall and write the events and emotions of our time." Through his friendship with Neil and his dedicated research, Barbree brings us the most accurate account of his friend's life of flight, the book he planned for twenty years.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The is year 2053 and a huge meteor, in the form of a rogue planet called Lycos, has partially destroyed the Earth. Some years prior to Lycos, a faulty deep space satellite accidentally captured data showing that Europa could possibly sustain human life. With the impending impact of Lycos, a decision was made to start construction of two moon bases and two Generation Space Ships; the Orion and the Cassiopeia. Now that the two ships are ready, the remaining survivors on the moon prepare to make the journey to Europa. The plot centers around Tess Robinson, her husband Stan and son Lenny and a number of close allies of Tess. Tess's emotional state has been driven by the loss of her husband and son (unbeknownst to Tess, however, Stan and Lenny are still alive in an underground parking garage/bomb shelter on Earth). Tess is a strong-willed black female pilot who has been charged with flying the Cassiopeia generation space ship to Europa. The moon base commander, Wilfred Soren, is power hungry and wants to set himself up as a king on Europa, so he manipulates his allies and enemies in order to secretly board the Cassiopeia with his select people and fly it to Europa ahead of schedule. Many, including Tess, are abandoned on the moon with little fuel, food, and power. Their only chance to survive is to retrieve the Orion at the destroyed UN base and return to Earth. There, they hoped to get enough fuel for the trip to Europa, as well as a key engine part called the engine power node.
