NOVALIS: HYMNS TO THE NIGHT AND SPIRITUAL SONGS A new edition of Novalis' Hymns To the Night, and Spiritual Songs, translated by George MacDonald, with an introduction and notes by Carol Appleby. Includes the German text. This edition features a collection of 26 Romantic, European paintings from the late 1770s and early 1800s (the era of Hymns To the Night and Spiritual Songs), which have been interwoven with the poems. Artists include: J.M.W. Turner, Giambattista Tiepolo, Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Henry Fuseli, Thomas Cole, J.A.D. Ingres, and Jacques-Louis David. Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg, 1772-1801) is the most mystical of the German Romantic poets. He is at once the most typical and the most unusual of the German Romantic writers, indeed, of all Romantic poets. His best known work, Hymns To the Night, was published in 1800. Novalis is supremely idealistic, far more so than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Heinrich Heine. He died young, which makes him, like Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats, something of a hero (or martyr). He did not write as much as Shelley, but his work, like that of Keats or Arthur Rimbaud, promised much. For Michael Hamburger, Novalis' poetry is almost totally idealistic: Novalis's philosophy, then, is not mystical, but utopian. That is why his imaginative works are almost wholly lacking in conflict. They are a perpetual idyll. It's true that Novalis' work is supremely idealistic, and utopian. But it is also mystical, because it points towards the invisible, unseen and unknown, and aims to reach that ecstatic realm. Novalis wrote: The sense of poetry has much in common with that for mysticism. It is the sense of the peculiar, personal, unknown, mysterious, for what is to be revealed, the necessary-accidental. It represents the unrepresentable. It sees the invisible, feels the unfeelable, etc... The sense for poetry has a close relationship with the sense for augury and the religious sense, with the sense for prophecy in general. Glyn Hughes remarks of Novalis: 'The sustaining interest in the reading of Novalis's works is the sense of contact with a mind of visionary intensity and total commitment. The poetic achievement is in the momentary glimpses of ideal reality: what, in other contexts, we should call epiphanies. (61) The translator of Hymns To the Night, Scottish fantasist George MacDonald (1824-95), included Lewis Carroll and John Ruskin among his literary friends. His well-known works were Phantastes (1858), Lilith (1895), Bannerman's Boyhood and the Curdie children's stories: The Princess and the Goblin (1872) and The Princess and Curdie (1882). MacDonald's books were a significant influence on both J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Fully illustrated with many classic paintings, as well as images of Novalis. In A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom Christ, St. John states: "I do not purpose here to set forth all that greatness and fullness the spirit of love, which is fruitful, embodies in it. Yes, rather it would be foolishness to think that the language of love and the mystical intelligence - and that is what these stanzas are - can be at all explained in words of any kind, for the Spirit of our Lord who helps our weakness." John of the Cross was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, Catholic saint, Carmelite friar and priest. He is considered, along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, as a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. His poetry and his studies on the growth of the soul are considered the summit of mystical.

Quatrains of Rumi BERTRAMS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This is the first complete translation of the nearly 2,000 quatrains attributed to Jalaluddin Rumi, the famous 13th century mystical poet. It is the result of over 22 years of collaboration by an American Rumi scholar and an Afghan scholar of Persian literature. It should appeal to a wide variety of lovers of Mawlana Rumi's poetry, not just specialists: general readers who seek a deeper understanding of his spiritual teachings than popularized books (often interpretive versions claimed as translations) can provide, as well as those interested in religious mysticism in general and Islamic mysticism (sufism) in particular. The quatrains are ordered according to stages and themes of the 'lover and beloved' (spiritual disciple and sufi master). Most of the translations are followed by explanatory notes: those intended for the general reader have asterisks and often refer to the Notes, an appended glossary. Readers who have access to previously published translations and versions of the quatrains can use the appended Concordance to make comparisons. Quatrains in the earliest manuscripts that have been found to be composed by earlier poets have been identified and placed in another appendix. Few of the quatrains have been previously translated by scholars; the quatrains in popularized books are often distorted versions, mostly rendered by authors who do not know Persian; those who do often tend to omit, change, or add. Here, the poems are presented in the context of the Islamic sufi poetry in the Persian language 800 years ago: 'wine' and 'drunkenness' do not involve alcoholic intoxication, but are metaphors for the 'mystical taste' of spiritual grace and ecstasy. The lover's longing and self-effacing love is not 'romantic', but spiritual love of the seeker for his sufi guide. This love is a means to the goal of pure worship of God Most High, the 'only Beloved', that necessitates self-effacement and mystical 'drowning' in the reality described in the Qur'an: 'Everything perishes except His Face.'

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"A poem is...it cannot be otherwise... seldom explained...it spreads its words...on a page...hovering in a white sky..." So begins world-famous singer/songwriter Donovan in his poetic foreword to This Enduring Gift. This Enduring Gift is a collection of timeless and memorable poetry that digs deep and delivers. The 76 poets come from many parts of the US, Canada, the Caribbean, Australia, and several countries in Europe. They have one thing in common - they live or have lived in one buzzing, cosmopolitan small town in America's Heartland: Fairfield, Iowa. In nearly 300 poems, these remarkable poets not only share important nuggets from their own lives, but they communicate in universal terms, touching the very heart of our existence. Each poem speaks in its own distinct voice. Regardless of the many different styles and approaches these poets exhibit, each of their poems complement the others in a larger context. All 16 chapters read like a little book each expressing many variations on its theme, which you can savor in your own sweet time. Freddy Niagara Fonseca, Renaissance man, poet, dramatic reader, impresario, and creator of This Enduring Gift has immersed himself in the arts all his life and has read tens of thousands of poems in five languages. In 2004 he founded the Candlelight Reading Series, and in 2007, the Chamber Music Society Fairfield. With the collaboration of expressive readers, musicians, dancers, and actors, he has presented over 50 poetry readings on universal themes culled from poetry of all styles, eras, and cultures. He regularly invites noteworthy musicians - statewide, nationwide, and internationally - to perform chamber music in Fairfield, Iowa. Freddy Niagara Fonseca believes that poetry and the whole world will drastically change once a new, spiritual paradigm of consciousness and language emerges. Poetry will then be experienced, written, and appreciated in universal terms, and a sublime awareness of the Earth will manifest. He has lived in Fairfield for over 20 years and calls it home. "This Enduring Gift is a wonderful compilation of the many rich voices and gifted poets who live in Fairfield, IA-a unique spot on the map. This anthology should not only endure, but inspire, enlighten and entertain all who touch its pages." - MARY SWANDER, Poet Laureate of IA, Author of The Girls on the Roof "This Enduring Gift is a testament to the abiding power of poetry within a particularly unique community and, by extension, speaks to poetry's universal relevance. Here, a convergence of voices from places near and far, gathered in a small Midwestern town, observe, reflect, meditate, and wonder. From evocative lyrics to compelling narratives, from precise moments of deeply felt experience to inquiries of mystical complexities, these poems resonate with individual authenticity and true collective spirit." - WALTER E. BUTTS, 2009-2014 Poet Laureate of New Hampshire "This Enduring Gift reads like a collection of polished mirrors reflecting the valor of Fairfield poets - valor born of candor and insight that takes center stage and performs a love affair with language." - KIRA ROSNER, Author of When Souls Take Flight "The poems of This Enduring Gift...indicate an original awareness, a sensibility, a clarity of image, rhythm, and color from a group of individuals who have lived in Fairfield, Iowa - far more than a geographical location, but more a state of mind, or consciousness, seemingly, as there is a remarkable texture-ness to them all, each one unique in its shine and feel. I am startled at the creative light found in this wonderful collection so well arranged, edited and created by Freddy Fonseca." -

A pioneer in the field of visionary plant research, he was one of the first people to suggest the use of entheogens for psychological healing and spiritual growth. His insights into the consciousness-expanding effects of psychedelics as well as human nature, the psyche and the nature of reality earned him a reputation as a mystical scientist and visionary philosopher. Collected Works of St. John of the Cross Bottom of the Hill Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Ascent Of Mount Carmel is part of four works by St. John dealing with the "Dark Night of the Soul", when the individual Soul undergoes earthly and spiritual privations in search of union with God. The Ascent Of Mount Carmel is regarded as one of the greatest works of mysticism in Christianity. The book is divided into three sections and is presented as a commentary on four poetic stanzas by John on the subject of the Dark Night. He shows how the Soul sets out to leave all worldly ties and appetites behind to achieve "nothing less than transformation in God". Dark Night of the Soul is a theological commentary on the poem explaining the meaning of St. John of the Cross' poem of the same name. The book describes its meaning by stanza. Dark Night of the Soul narrates the journey of the soul from bodily home to union with God. In A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom Christ, St. John states: "I do not purpose here to set forth all that greatness and fullness the spirit of love, which is fruitful, embodies in it. Yes, rather it would be foolishness to think that the language of love and the mystical intelligence - and that is what these stanzas are - can be at all explained in words of any kind, for the Spirit of our Lord who helps our weakness." The Poetry of St. John of the Cross includes 25 of his most inspirational poems including What is Grace, By the Waters of Babylon, My Soul is a Candle, Within the Trinity and more. John of the Cross was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, Catholic saint, Carmelite friar and priest. He is considered, along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, as a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. His poetry and his studies on the growth of the soul are considered the summit of mystical.

Persian Gardens and Pavilions I B TAURIS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

From Timur's tent in Samarqand to Shah 'Abbas's palace in Isfahan and Humayun's tomb in Delhi, the pavilion has been an integral part of Persianate gardens since its earliest appearance at the Achaemenid garden in Pasargadae in the sixth century BC. Here, Mohammad Gharipour places both the garden and the pavilion within their historical, literary and artistic contexts, emphasizing the importance of the pavilion, which has hitherto been overlooked in the study of Iranian historical architecture. Starting with an examination of the depictions and representations of gardens in religious texts, Gharipour analyses the how the idea of the garden developed from the model of pre-Islamic gardens in Achaemenid and Sassanian Persia to its mentions in the Zoroastrian text of Aban Yasht and on to its central role as paradise in the Qur'an. Continuing on with an exploration of gardens and pavilions in Persian poetry, Gharipour offers in-depth analysis of their literal and metaphorical values. It is in the poetry of major Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Naser Khosrow, Sa'di, Rumi and Hafez that Gharipour finds that whilst gardens are praised for their spiritual values, they also contain significant symbolic worth in terms of temporal wealth and power. Persian Gardens and Pavilions then goes onto examine the garden and the pavilion as reflected in Persian miniature painting, sculpture and carpets, as well as accounts of travelers to Persia. With masters such as Bizhad representing daily life as well as the more mystical prose and poetry in, for example, Sa'di's Bustan (The Orchard) and Golestan (The Rose Garden), the garden and the pavilion can be seen to have crucial semiotic significances and cultural meanings. But in addition to this, they also point to historical patterns of patronage and ownership which were of central importance in the diplomatic and social life of the royal courts of Persia. Gharipour thereby highlights the metaphorical, spiritual, symbolic and religious aspects of gardens, as well as their more materialistic and economic functions. This book reaches back through Persia's rich history to explore the material and psychological relationships between human beings, pavilions and gardens, and will be a valuable resource for Art History, Architecture and Iranian Studies.

Rumi's Daughter RIDER

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Rumi is now acknowledged as one of the great mystical poets of the Western world, with huge sales of the many collections of his poetry. Not much is known about his life except that he lived in thirteenth-century Anatolia (now Turkey), had a great spiritual friendship with a wild man called Shams, brought an adopted daughter into his family, and was distraught when Shams finally disappeared. Rumi's Daughter is the delightful novel about Kimya, the girl who was sent from her rural village to live in Rumi's home. She already had mystical tendencies, and learned a great deal under Rumi's tutelage. Eventually she married Shams, an unusual husband, almost totally absorbed by his longings for God. Their marriage was fiery and different and, in the end, dissolved by Kimya's death - after which Shams vanished. Rumi's Daughter tells Kimya's story with great charm and tenderness. Well written and thought-provoking, it is sure to draw comparison with Paolho Coelho's The Alchemist, and also to add something fresh and new to what is so far known about Rumi.

I am Brahman is an inspired quest into the heart of the non-dual reality. This deeply personal journey discovers the essentials in religion, science and art which all point to the Advaitin truth that consciousness itself is the basis of all existence. This short but visceral journey includes mystical experiences in India and goes deeper than ever before to describe what it is like to experience Brahman, the great Oneness of which we are a part. Rather than just another descriptive book about non-duality I am Brahman takes wings and carries the reader from the banks of the Ganges into the poetry of the soul. Here is what science has been looking for and the theology to unite all faiths. Maurice Anslow's book pulls together the searchings of a lifetime and deserves to become a modern spiritual classic.
