Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Nauki humanistyczne

Alain de Botton, best-selling author of How Proust can Change Your Life, has set six of the finest minds in the history of philosophy to work on the problems of everyday life. Here then are Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Montaigne, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche on some of the things that bother us all; lack of money, the pain of love, inadequacy, anxiety, the fear of failure and the pressure to conform.

'A sudden passion of anxious impatience rushed through my veins and gave me such a sense of the intensity of existence as I have never felt before or since.' link title to catalogue entry](exact date?)Written in 1915, The Shadow-Line is based upon events and experiences from twenty-seven years earlier to which Conrad returned obsessively in his fiction. A young sea captain's first command brings with it a succession of crises: his sea is becalmed, the crew laid low by fever, and his deranged first mate is convinced that the ship is haunted by the malignant spirit of a previous captain. This is indeed a work full of 'sudden passions', in which Conrad is able to show how the full intensity of existence can be experienced by the man who, in the words of the older Captain Giles, is prepared to 'stand up to his bad luck, to his mistakes, to his conscience'. A subtle and penetrating analysis of the nature of manhood, The Shadow-Line investigates varieties of masculinity and desire in a subtext that counterpoints the tale's seemingly conventional surface. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Fall of Arthur Harper Collins

Deluxe collector's edition featuring the first edition text and containing a facsimile page of Tolkien's original manuscript. The book is quarterbound with a gold motif stamped on the front board and is presented in a matching slipcase. The Fall of Arthur, the only venture by J.R.R. Tolkien into the legends of Arthur King of Britain, may well be regarded as his finest and most skilful achievement in the use of the Old English alliterative metre, in which he brought to his transforming perceptions of the old narratives a pervasive sense of the grave and fateful nature of all that is told: of Arthur's expedition overseas into distant heathen lands, of Guinevere's flight from Camelot, of the great sea-battle on Arthur's return to Britain, in the portrait of the traitor Mordred, in the tormented doubts of Lancelot in his French castle. Unhappily, The Fall of Arthur was one of several long narrative poems that he abandoned in that period. In this case he evidently began it in the earlier nineteen-thirties, and it was sufficiently advanced for him to send it to a very perceptive friend who read it with great enthusiasm at the end of 1934 and urgently pressed him 'You simply must finish it!' But in vain: he abandoned it, at some date unknown, though there is some evidence that it may have been in 1937, the year of the publication of The Hobbit and the first stirrings of The Lord of the Rings. Years later, in a letter of 1955, he said that 'he hoped to finish a long poem on The Fall of Arthur'; but that day never came. Associated with the text of the poem, however, are many manuscript pages: a great quantity of drafting and experimentation in verse, in which the strange evolution of the poem's structure is revealed, together with narrative synopses and very significant if tantalising notes. In these latter can be discerned clear if mysterious associations of the Arthurian conclusion with The Silmarillion, and the bitter ending of the love of Lancelot and Guinevere, which was never written.

Much has been written about Neil Armstrong, America's modern hero and history's most famous space traveler. Yet shy of fame and never one to steal the spotlight Armstrong was always reluctant to discuss his personal side of events. Here for the first time is the definitive story of Neil's life of flight he shared for five decades with a trusted friend - Jay Barbree.Working from 50 years of conversations he had with Neil, from notes, interviews, NASA spaceflight transcripts, and remembrances of those Armstrong trusted, Barbree writes about Neil's three passions - flight, family, and friends. This is the inside story of Neil Armstrong from the time he flew combat missions in the Korean War and then flew a rocket plane called the X-15 to the edge of space, to when he saved his Gemini 8 by flying the first emergency return from Earth orbit and then flew Apollo-Eleven to the moon's Sea of Tranquility. Together Neil and Jay discussed everything, from his love of flying, to the war years, and of course his time in space. The book is full of never-before-seen photos and personal details written down for the first time, including what Armstrong really felt when he took that first step on the moon, what life in NASA was like, his relationships with the other astronauts, and what he felt the future of space exploration should be.As the only reporter to have covered all 166 American astronaut flights and moon landings Jay knows these events intimately. Neil Armstrong himself said, "Barbree is history's most experienced space journalist. He is exceptionally well qualified to recall and write the events and emotions of our time." Through his friendship with Neil and his dedicated research, Barbree brings us the most accurate account of his friend's life of flight, the book he planned for twenty years.

Lost Manuscript of Frederic Cailliaud - 2826688212

Lost Manuscript of Frederic Cailliaud American University Of Cairo

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The travel accounts, drawings, and collections of Frederic Cailliaud were an important early contribution to the birth of the new scientific discipline of Egyptology in the first half of the nineteenth century. But one of his major works-on the arts and crafts of ancient Egypt-was never published. For the first time here, his exquisite color plates are presented alongside a translation of his original French text describing them. Explanatory material by Andrew Bednarski and other scholars put the work in context. Arriving in Egypt in 1815, Cailliaud embarked upon a series of explorations that included the rediscovery of the Roman emerald mines at Mount Zabora and ancient routes to the Red Sea, and expeditions in the Eastern and Western Deserts, and the land we know today as Ethiopia. He made copious notes on the flora and fauna, people and antiquities he saw, and took a collection of over two thousand objects back to France. Cailliaud's beautifully rendered watercolors of scenes on ancient Egyptian tombs and temples (viewed before Champollion's deciphering of Egyptian hieroglyphs) show animated scenes of ancient daily life, with which he draws parallels to the nineteenth-century activities he observed around him. This is a work that will appeal not only to Egyptologists (professional and amateur), but also to historians, art historians, and readers interested in design. The original French text, never before published, is included in electronic form."

W. H. Auden: Prose Princeton University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This volume contains all of W. H. Auden's prose works from 1949 through 1955, including many little-known essays that exemplify his range, wit, depth, and wisdom. The book includes the complete text of Auden's first separately published prose book, The Enchafed Flood, or, The Romantic Iconography of the Sea, followed by more than one hundred separate essays, reviews, introductions, and lectures, as well as a questionnaire (complete with his own answers) about the reader's fantasy version of Eden. Two reviews that Auden wrote for the New Yorker, but which the magazine never printed, appear here for the first time, and a series of aphorisms previously published only in a French translation are printed in English. Among the previously unpublished lectures is a long account of the composition of his poem "Prime," complete with his comments on early rejected drafts. The variety of style and subject in this book is almost inexhaustible. Auden writes about the imaginary mirrors that everyone carries through life; French existentialism and New Yorker cartoons; Freud, Kierkegaard, Dostoyevsky, and Camus; Keats, Cervantes, Melville, Colette, Byron, Virgil, Yeats, Tolkien, and Virginia Woolf; opera, ballet, cinema, prosody, and music; English and American poetry and society; and politics and religion. The introduction by Edward Mendelson places the essays in biographical and historical context, and the extensive textual notes explain obscure contemporary references and provide an often-amusing history of Auden's work as an editor of anthologies and a series of books by younger poets.

Bride of Lammermoor EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The most haunting and Shakespearean of Scott's novels, The Bride of Lammermoor is a fast-paced tragedy set on the eve of the 1707 Union. The proud young Master of Ravenswood sees his estate pass to the astute Sir William Ashton. When Ravenswood falls in love with Ashton's daughter, her diabolical mother takes extreme measures to thwart the match - with tragic results. A story of immense gloomy power, infused by the unforgiving spirit of the North Sea. "The Edinburgh Edition respects Scott the artist by 'restoring' versions of the novels that are not quite what his first readers saw. Indeed, it returns to manuscripts that the printers never handled, as Scott's fiction before 1827 was transcribed before it reached the printshop. Each volume of the Edinburgh edition presents an uncluttered text of one work, followed by an Essay on the Text by the editor of the work, a list of the emendations that have been made to the first edition, explanatory notes and a glossary ! The editorial essays are histories of the respective texts. Some of them are almost 100 pages long; when they are put together they constitute a fascinating and lucid account of Scott's methods of compostion and his financial manoeuvres. This edition is for anyone who takes Scott seriously." Times Literary Supplement

With the Old Breed INGRAM INTERNATIONAL

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"Of all the books about the ground war in the Pacific, "With the Old Breed" is the closest to a masterpiece." - "The New York Review of Books". "One of the most arresting documents in war literature." - John Keegan, in "The Second World War". "One of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war". - Paul Fussell, in "Wartime". "The best World War II memoir of an enlisted man". - "Navy Times". In his own book, "Wartime", Paul Fussell called "With the Old Breed" one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war." John Keegan referred to it in his "The Second World War" as "one of the most arresting documents in war literature." And Studs Terkel was so fascinated with the story he interviewed its author for his book, "The Good War". What has made E.B. Sledge's memoir of his experience fighting in the South Pacific during World War II so devastatingly powerful is its sheer honest simplicity and compassion. "With the Old Breed" presents a stirring, personal account of the vitality and bravery of the Marines in the battles at Peleliu and Okinawa. Born in Mobile, Alabama in 1923 and raised on riding, hunting, fishing, and a respect for history and legendary heroes such as George Washington and Daniel Boone, Eugene Bondurant Sledge (later called "Sledgehammer" by his Marine Corps buddies) joined the Marines the year after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and from 1943 to 1946 endured the events recorded in this book. In those years, he passed, often painfully, from innocence to experience. Sledge enlisted out of patriotism, idealism, and youthful courage, but once he landed on the beach at Peleliu, it was purely a struggle for survival. Based on the notes he kept on slips of paper tucked secretly away in his New Testament, he simply and directly recalls those long months, mincing no words and sparing no pain. The reality of battle meant unbearable heat, deafening gunfire, unimaginable brutality and cruelty, the stench of death, and, above all, constant fear. Sledge still has nightmares about "the bloody, muddy month of May on Okinawa." But, as he also tellingly reveals, the bonds of friendship formed then will never be severed. Sledge's honesty and compassion for the other marines, even complete strangers, sets him apart as a memoirist of war. Read as sobering history or as high adventure, "With the Old Breed" is a moving chronicle of action and courage. About the Author: E. B. "Sledgehammer" Sledge was born and grew up in Mobile. His father, a physician, taught him to hunt and to accurately observe and describe his surroundings. After graduating from high school, he spent a year at Marion Military Institute and a brief period at the Georgia Institute of Technology in an officers' training program. Sledge left the program in late 1943 to enlist in the US Marine Corps. After basic training, he was sent to the Pacific Theater. He fought at Peleliu and Okinawa where some of the fiercest battles of WWII took place. Despite heavy casualties in his unit, he survived without being physically wounded. It took him years, however, to recover from the psychological wounds from that experience. After the Japanese surrendered, Sledge was assigned to serve in China as part of the occupation force. Sledge returned to Mobile after his tour of duty in 1946, but found it hard to re-adjust to civilian life. He earned a BS degree in 1949 from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) and attempted to establish a career in the insurance business. On his father's advice, he returned to Auburn for an MS in Botany. In 1960, he graduated from the University of Florida with a PhD in Zoology.

Vivaldi Complete Concertos & Sonatas Op.1-12 - 2857582494

Vivaldi Complete Concertos & Sonatas Op.1-12 MAC

Muzyka na CD

Federico Guglielmo and his ensemble L’Arte dell’Arco have already made a number of acclaimed recordings of Vivaldi’s music for Brilliant Classics. This boxset brings together CDs previously published along with never-before-heard recordings, spanning Vivaldi’s Concertos and Sonatas Opp. 1–12 plus a bonus CD of Cello Sonatas. The comprehensive collection showcases the perennial music of ‘Il prete rosso’, with Italian musicians playing on authentic instruments, giving the closest version possible to the sounds that would have resonated in Venice 300 years ago. Guglielmo shines at the helm of his closely- knit ensemble; from the Trio Sonatas Op.1, which showed Vivaldi’s prowess at writing within an already well-established genre, through to his Violin Sonatas Op.2, with their elaborate asides for the ensemble as well as the solo instrument. ‘L’estro armonico’ (‘Harmonic inspiration’), a collection of 12 concertos, brought VivaldiEuropean-wide fame for the first time, which he soon built on through his next publication ‘Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione’ (‘The contest between harmony and invention’). Arguably the composer’s most famous collection, ‘Il cimento’ includes the delightful Four Seasons, as well as more concertos with evocative titles, such as ‘La caccia’ (‘The hunt’) and ‘La tempesta di mare’ (‘The sea storm’). The ensemble varies depending on the piece, with some concertos styled with a small group of soloists accompanied by a ripieno, and others allowing one soloist to take a prominent role. This release is proud to feature some of Guglielmo’s long-time collaborators, including Mario Folena on the flute, Pier Luigi Fabretti on the oboe and Francesco Galligioni on the cello, all experienced performers with a sound that blends perfectly with L’Arte dell’Arco. The ensemble itself also differs from piece to piece, with Guglielmo carefully selecting the number of performers and instrumentation for each individual work, thereby creating the most authentic performance possible. Guglielmo and his players bring a fresh interpretation to these beloved concertos as well as providing the listener with an opportunity to delve into Vivaldi’s lesser-known earlier works. With just one player per part, L’Arte dell’Arco strip back the layers, bringing a revitalising transparency to Vivaldi’s complex writing. The release includes world premieres of performances based on new critical editions of Vivaldi’s music authorised by the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi, based at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice. For the first time Vivaldi’s complete Op. 1-12 in one set! Already during his lifetime Vivaldi was a popular and successful composer, and, possessing a keen commercial talent, he published his own works. The works published during his lifetime are contained in his Opus 1-12, featuring such popular cycles as the Four Seasons, L’Estro Armonico, La Stravaganza, the flute concertos, and several sets of trio sonatas. These are by far to most popular works by the Venetian priest, and today they sound as fresh and sensational as when they were composed. Newly recorded and based on the new Critical Edition by Alessandro Borin, Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice. Performed by the Italian Early Music group L’Arte dell’Arco, led by violinist (and soloist) Federico Guglielmo. French magazine Diapason wrote about them: ”they understand the secret language of Vivaldi…rich and generous instrumental textures envelop the expressive lines of the solo violin…”. All the previous separate issues have met with great critical acclaim, resulting in many 5 star reviews in the international press. Included as a bonus CD, the new recording of the Cello Sonatas. Although without opus number they were certainly published during Vivaldi’s lifetime. Contains a biography of the performers. Recorded in Italy in 2010 - 2014. Contains excellent liner notes by Vivaldi specialists.
