In 2012, the spotlight was on Prime Minister Monti and his government of non-elected ministers. Early in the year, the new government's economic policy was effective in stopping the international downgrading of the country's credit rating. However, in terms of the entire year, the success of the Monti government appears less definitive. There were no clear achievements in terms of growth, and the structural features of the economy remained weak. Monti successfully initiated some reforms and policy changes, but there were failures as well. Furthermore, the "odd majority" (made up of the PdL, PD, and UdC) that supported Monti in Parliament performed more weakly than the government. The parties were to change the electoral law, reform the parliamentary institutions, cut costs, and reduce the privileges of the political class, but failed. Their inaction was accompanied by a series of scandals and crimes, all of which facilitated the emergence of new political forces, such as the Five Star Movement. When Monti eventually resigned in December 2012, President Napolitano called for new elections, and the parties redefined their proposals and lists. At the end of the year, the political and economic conditions of the country remained fragile.

History of British Prime Ministers PALGRAVE MACMILLAN

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Fifty-two men and one woman have held the post of Prime Minister during the past three centuries - from Sir Robert Walpole to David Cameron. In this omnibus edition, which includes Eighteenth-Century British Premiers, Nineteenth-Century British Premiers, A Century of Premiers, plus new and updated chapters on Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron, Dick Leonard recounts the circumstances which took them to the top of the 'greasy pole', probes their political and personal strengths and weaknesses, assesses their performance in office and asks what lasting influence they have had. The author also recounts fascinating and often little-known facts about the private lives of each of the Prime Ministers, for example who was suspected of being the illegitimate half-brother of George III, who was assassinated in the House of Commons, who spent his evenings prowling the streets of London, trying to 'reform' prostitutes, which two premiers, one Tory one Labour, were taught by the same governess as a child, and who was described by his own son as 'probably the greatest natural Don Juan in the history of British politics'?

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... 'Only with the greatest of simplifications, for the sake of convenience, can we say Africa. In reality, except as a geographical term, Africa doesn't exist'. Ryszard Kapuscinski has been writing about the people of Africa throughout his career. In a study that avoids the official routes, palaces and big politics, he sets out to create an account of post-colonial Africa seen at once as a whole and as a location that wholly defies generalised explanations. It is both a sustained meditation on the mosaic of peoples and practises we call 'Africa', and an impassioned attempt to come to terms with humanity itself as it struggles to escape from foreign domination, from the intoxications of freedom, from war and from politics as theft. The Beginning: Collision, Ghana 1958 More than anything, one is struck by the light. Light everywhere. Brightness everywhere. Everywhere, the sun. Just yesterday, an autumnal London was drenched in rain. The airplane drenched in rain. A cold, wind, darkness. But here, from the morning

Margot Asquith was perhaps the most daring and unconventional Prime Minister's wife in British history. Known for her wit, style and habit of speaking her mind, she transformed 10 Downing Street into a glittering social and intellectual salon. Yet her last four years at Number 10 were a period of intense emotional and political turmoil in her private and public life. In 1912, when Anne de Courcy's book opens, rumblings of discontent and cries for social reform were encroaching on all sides - from suffragettes, striking workers and Irish nationalists. Against this background of a government beset with troubles, the Prime Minister fell desperately in love with his daughter's best friend, Venetia Stanley; to complicate matters, so did his Private Secretary. Margot's relationship with her husband was already bedevilled by her stepdaughter's jealous, almost incestuous adoration of her father. The outbreak of the First World War only heightened these swirling tensions within Downing Street. Drawing on unpublished material from personal papers and diaries, Anne de Courcy vividly recreates this extraordinary time when the Prime Minister's residence was run like an English country house, with socialising taking precedence over politics, love letters written in the cabinet room and gossip and state secrets exchanged over the bridge table. By 1916, when Asquith was forced out of office, everything had changed. For the country as a whole, for those in power, for a whole stratum of society, but especially for the Asquiths and their circle, it was the end of an era. Life inside Downing Street would never be the same again.

The compelling, untold and definitive account of the Cameron tenure, gathered from hundreds of interviews in the twilight of the first Conservative term of government for thirteen years. The general election on 7th May 2015 will be one of the most contested elections for 25 years. The result is wide open: David Cameron has a chance to remain in office, but he also faces enormous challenges to convince the country that he deserves another term in office. Whatever the outcome, scrutiny of his government - the first Coalition in 80 years - is only set to intensify. David Cameron's mixed premiership form a story of promise, missed opportunities and moments of political courage. With the full co-operation from the Prime Minister and his Chief of Staff, Ed Llewellyn, senior civil servants, the Cabinet Secretary and the Prime Minister's Principal Private Secretary, Anthony Seldon and Peter Snowdon 'Cameron at 10' is the authoritative work on this fascinating contemporary history. Rigorously fair and independent, Anthony Seldon and Peter Snowdon capture the high drama of life at the heart of government between 2010 and 2015, giving readers an unvarnished account of the inner workings of Number 10 in its relations with the George Osborne and Nick Clegg downwards, and the inside stories of the Referendum on Scottish independence, the phone hacking scandal and the gathering threats of Islamic State. Bringing to life the raw experience of the most turbulent and febrile period of British political life since the 1930s, this will be a personal and revelatory account of what really happens at the heart of government.

This first volume of Margaret Thatcher's memoirs, which encompasses the whole of her time as Prime Minister. Margaret Thatcher is the towering figure of late-twentieth-century British politics. No other prime minister of modern times has sought to change Britain and its place in the world as radically as she did. This is the story of her remarkable life in her own words. This first volume of her memoirs is a riveting first-hand portrait of the events and personalities of her eleven years in power. She recalls the triumphs and the critical moments of her premiership -- the Falklands War, the miners' strike, the Brighton bomb, the Westland Affair and her unprecedented three election victories. Her judgements of the men and women she encountered, whether world statesmen or Cabinet colleagues, are astonishingly frank. She is lavish with praise where it is due; devastating with criticism when it is not. The book reaches a gripping climax with an hour-by-hour description from inside 10 Downing Street of her dramatic final days in office. Margaret Thatcher's compelling account stands as a powerful testament to her extraordinary legacy.

Nicklaus Thomas-Symonds - Attlee I B TAURIS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Clement Attlee - the man who created the welfare state and decolonised vast swathes of the British Empire, including India - has been acclaimed by many as Britains' greatest twentieth-century Prime Minister. Yet somehow Attlee the man remains elusive and little known. How did such a moderate, modest man bring about so many enduring changes? What are the secrets of his leadership style? And how do his personal attributes account for both his spectacular successes and his apparent failures? When Attlee became Prime Minister in July 1945 he was the leader of a Labour party that had won a landslide victory. With almost 50 per cent of the popular vote, Attlee seemed to have achieved the platform for Labour to dominate post-war British politics. Yet just 6 years and 3 months after the 1945 victory, and despite all Attlee's governments had appeared to achieve, Labour was out of office, condemned to opposition for a further 13 years. This presents one of the great paradoxes of twentieth-century British history: how Attlee's government achieved so much, but lost power so quickly. But perhaps the greatest paradox was Attlee himself. Attlee's obituary in "The Times" in 1967 stated that 'much of what he did was memorable; very little that he said'. This new biography, based on extensive research into Attlee's papers and first-hand interviews, examines the myths that have arisen around this key figure of British political life and provides a vivid portrait of the man and his politics.

Chris Hutchins - Putin Matador

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Putin is the highly personal biography of Russia's leader - a man many regard as the world's most interesting politician - and is the result of six years of research by the authors. Chris Hutchins is a highly successful investigative journalist and much-published author of biographies. Alexander Korobko is a London-based Russian journalist and television producer with the kind of journalistic connections in his homeland that helped to make this book epic. Hutchins travelled throughout Russia to meet and gain the confidence of the people who know Vladimir Putin best, including those who knew him as a child, a teenager and a young intelligence officer, long before he first entered the world's stage as Russia's leader. The sources proved to be so good that Hutchins was told in 2005 that Putin would step down as President in 2008 to become Prime Minister, and then return to the Kremlin in 2012 - a move which now seems certain to prove the accuracy of all three predictions. Putin's stunning ability as a politician - he had never even stood for office until President Yeltsin made him head of the government in 1999 - took many totally by surprise. A British diplomat who travelled to St Petersburg with Tony Blair to meet the then-President elect describes in detail how Putin completely outwitted the British Prime Minister who was, until that moment, regarded as the elder statesman. In just eight years he rescued his country from financial ruin (a feat the experts had predicted could not be done in less than forty) and in doing so saved the nation's pride. But this book is about the man, not just the politician. Who are his friends? What makes him laugh? What has made him cry? How rich is he? What has his wife got to say about him? What are his real views on the oligarchs? Who does he turn to in times of trouble? Putin leaves no stone unturned. Intelligent books about him have been few and far between because, of all the world leaders, the man his friends call Vlad has managed to remain a mystery. This book goes some way to revealing the man behind the enigma.

Excerpt: Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (Russian: , IPA: ; born 7 October 1952) served as the second President of the Russian Federation and is the current Prime Minister of Russia, as well as chairman of United Russia and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Union of Russia and Belarus. He became acting President on 31 December 1999, when president Boris Yeltsin resigned in a surprising move. Putin won the 2000 presidential election and in 2004 he was re-elected for a second term lasting until 7 May 2008. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term. After the victory of his successor, Dmitry Medvedev, in the 2008 presidential elections, he was nominated by the latter to be Russia's Prime Minister; Putin took the post on 8 May 2008. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing the rule of law. During his presidency, Russia's economy bounced back from crisis, seeing GDP increase by 72% in PPP (sixfold in nominal), poverty decrease by more than 50%, and average monthly salaries increase from $80 to $640. These achievements were ascribed to strong macroeconomic management, important fiscal policy reforms and a confluence of high oil prices, surging capital inflows and access to low-cost external financing, and were described as impressive by analysts. During his presidency, Putin passed into law a series of fundamental reforms, including a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. At the same time, his conduct in office has been questioned by domestic political opposition, foreign governments, and human rights organizations for his strong-armed leadership of Russia; for leading the Second Chechen War; for his record of alleged violations of human rights and freedoms (in Russia and elsewhere; i.e. Chechnya); for forcibly silencing his opponents (like Mikhail Khodorkovsky); and for his alleged bullying of the former Soviet Republics. Churchill's Indian Summer Faber Finds

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Winston Churchill was seventy-six when the Conservative Party won the 1951 General Election. At the third attempt since the end of the Second World War he had finally been returned to power by the will of the people. A lifetime's ambition had been achieved after nearly half a century in Parliament. In Anthony Seldon's own words, 'the most controversial element in the book is likely to prove the reassessment of Churchill's contribution as a peacetime premier. The title "Churchill's Indian Summer" is not intended to be sensational, but it is meant to be combative. I do not suggest he was as fit or as brilliant as he had been during the war. He clearly was not. The characteristic of an Indian Summer is that the temperature is cooler than at the height of the season: indeed, a feature one would expect of a man a month off his seventy-sixth birthday on his return to Number Ten. Yet despite his failing powers, he was, I believe, right to remain in office, at least until his major stroke in the summer of 1953, and a good case can be made for his retention of power until the autumn of 1954. Only in his last six months in office was he not fully up to the task'. The book though is not just about Churchill. In an approach more thematic than chronological Anthony Seldon also gives a detailed analysis of each major Government department, its ministers and especially the civil servants who in many cases not merely implemented policies but determined them too. On the whole, it was an emollient administration somewhat to the left of both the Conservative and Labour Parties of today. Nor was it unsuccessful be it on the home front or in foreign policy. Anthony Seldon's book, first published in 1981, was the first to cover this still slightly forgotten Government. 'Mr Seldon has used an historical method which provides flesh and blood: he has talked to some 200 surviving politicians and civil servants and it is remarkable how little their views and recollections diverge...It is a gigantic exercise in oral history, and it is a triumph' - John Colville, "Sunday Telegraph". 'Here is a massive, excellently researched and very readable account of Winston Churchill's only Prime Ministership in peacetime, from 1951 to 1955...There is plenty of shrewd analysis, particularly of character and much balanced and generally charitable personalisation. A valuable book, in fact, and a first-class account of those four years in which Britain was still thought of as 'Great'. One is left with a sense of abiding gratitude to the author as well as his subject' - Terence Prittie. 'So much has been made of Churchill's infirmities in these years that too little attention has been given to his final, and extraordinary achievement, and it is the outstanding achievement of Mr Seldon that, although no slavish adulator, he recognizes that little of this would have been possible without that spirit of humanity and warmth and faith which radiated from the Prime Minister...There are few histories of a single Government so competent and reasoned as this' - Robert Rhodes James.

When Lee Kuan Yew speaks, presidents, prime ministers, diplomats, and CEOs listen. Lee, the founding father of modern Singapore and its prime minister from 1959 to 1990, has honed his wisdom during more than fifty years on the world stage. Almost single-handedly responsible for transforming Singapore into a Western-style economic success, he offers a unique perspective on the geopolitics of East and West. American presidents from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama have welcomed him to the White House; British prime ministers from Margaret Thatcher to Tony Blair have recognized his wisdom; and business leaders from Rupert Murdoch to Rex Tillerson, CEO of Exxon Mobil, have praised his accomplishments. This book gathers key insights from interviews, speeches, and Lee's voluminous published writings and presents them in an engaging question and answer format. Lee offers his assessment of China's future, asserting, among other things, that "China will want to share this century as co-equals with the U.S." He affirms the United States' position as the world's sole superpower but expresses dismay at the vagaries of its political system. He offers strategic advice for dealing with China and goes on to discuss India's future, Islamic terrorism, economic growth, geopolitics and globalization, and democracy. Lee does not pull his punches, offering his unvarnished opinions on multiculturalism, the welfare state, education, and the free market. This little book belongs on the reading list of every world leader -- including the one who takes the oath of office on January 20, 2013.

Britain's First Labour Government PALGRAVE MACMILLAN

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Eighty years ago Ramsay MacDonald took office as the first British Labour Prime Minister, the placards announcing LENIN DEAD [OFFICIAL] RAMSAY MACDONALD PREMIER. The judgement of historians on this short-lived minority administration of 287 days in 1924, seemingly dependant on Liberal parliamentary votes, has often been 'in office, but not in power'. Now available in paperback, Britain's First Labour Government is the first major account for nearly fifty years to re-assess critically Labour's first period in office in terms of domestic, foreign and imperial policy. It draws on a wide range of private papers and official sources and reconstructs the history of this forgotten government in the broader social and political context of the 1920s. This comprehensive study will appeal to everyone interested in twentieth- century British political history.
