Climbing Everest GIBSON SQUARE

In Climbing Everest, George Mallory (18 June 1886 - 8/9 June 1924), possibly the first man to summit Everest, takes us with him on his climbs in Britain and the Alps, culminating in his three expeditions to Mount Everest - the last of which cost him his life (a few days after the final piece in this book). Mallory was one of the first climbers to explore the emotional meaning of climbing, discarding the Edwardian stiff upper lip in the face of adventure. All his writings on climbing - here collected for the first time - started out as letters to his wife Ruth. He turned them into finely-crafted pieces which can be read by climbers as well as arm-chair climbers. When questioned 'Why climb Everest' he crafted the gnomic climbing phrase 'Because it is there.' His body was dramatically found five years ago on Everest in 2007. One day, nonetheless, his lost camera may provide the answer to the question whether he was the first human to summit Everest.

It was a blustery late spring day in 1954 and a young Oxford medical student flung himself over the line in a mile race. There was an agonising pause, and then the timekeeper announced the record: three minutes, fifty-nine point four seconds. But no one heard anything after that first word - 'three'. One of the most iconic barriers of sport had been broken, and Roger Bannister had become the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. To this day, more men have conquered Mount Everest than have achieved what the slender, unassuming student managed that afternoon. Sixty years on and the letters still arrive on Roger Bannister's doormat, letters testifying to the enduring appeal of the four-minute mile and the example it set for the generation of budding athletes who were inspired to attempt the impossible. In this frank memoir, Sir Roger tells the full story of the talent and dedication that made him not just one of the most celebrated athletes of the last century but also a distinguished doctor, neurologist and one of the nation's best-loved public figures. With characteristically trenchant views on drugs in sport, the nature of modern athletics and record breaking, the extraordinary explosion in running as a leisure activity, and the Olympic legacy, this rare and brilliant autobiography gives a fascinating insight into the life of a man who has lived life to the fullest.

Jim Curran has spent a considerable part of his life climbing and film-making on mountains all over the world. His first love, domestic rock climbing, has been the basis for high-profile media extravaganzas on K2, Everest and in Tibet. Yet, he realised, there remained many of the great climbs in the UK that he had still not achieved. So, in the summer of 2000 he set off to cycle from north to south of Britain to make good this deficiency, carrying all his equipment with him. Not for him the standard John O'Groats to Land's End by the shortest route. He chose to start in sight of the wonderfully named Muckle Flugga lighthouse at the northerly tip of Shetland, and from there a winding route took in old climbs and climbing friends plus new climbs and new friends met in lay-bys and pubs. He revisited the Old Man of Hoy to meet Mike Banks, the oldest man to climb it, and the location for a memorable week of filming with French superstar climber Catherine Destivelle; dropped in on Chris Bonington in the Lake District; and arrived, 2000 miles later on the sea cliffs of Lands End where, with magazine editor Geoff Birtles, he managed the easiest and the nearest climb to New York. It was unfortunate for him that summer turned out to be one of the wettest on record. But for the reader it only adds to the fun of a wonderfully entertaining travelogue.

Free and covered ablation. The ablation of ice that is either free and open to the air or covered with other materials (with sand, rubble or boulders; on glaciers with moraines) comes to pass by physical processes, that can be described by equations. The amount of the ablation can be calcu lated, but depends on so many parameters, that it is not possible to show all connections of the ablation processes in one single diagram. Therefore in chapter 2 andin the appendix many dia grams are shown, that represent the dependence of the ablation on the different meteorological factors and-in case of covered ablation-on the heat transmission coefficient of the covering mate rial. The differences between free and covered ablation become especially clear. From these dia grams, too, one can take the amounts of selective ablation that is caused by other processes than by the difference in the covering. By using the equation of energy balance it is possible to inter prete these processes. The third chapter shows many illustrations about the glaciers and the small glacial forms of ablation in the environs of the Mt. Everest. The phenomenons shown on these photographs be come intelligible by the physical considerations ofthe first and the second chapter. EINLEITUNG Die Abtragung von Schnee und Eis nennt man Ablation; sie erfolgt vor allem durch Schmelzen und Verdunsten.

Bear Grylls is a man who has always sought the ultimate in adventure. Growing up on the Isle of Wight, he was taught by his father to sail and climb at an early age. As a teenager he found identity and purpose through both mountaineering and martial arts, which led the young adventurer to the foothills of the mighty Himalaya and a grandmaster's karate training camp in Japan. On returning home, he embarked upon the notoriously gruelling selection course for the British Special Forces to join 21 SAS - a journey that was to push him to the very limits of physical and mental endurance. Then, in a horrific free-fall parachuting accident, Bear broke his back in three places. It was touch and go whether he would ever walk again. However, only eighteen months later Bear became one of the youngest ever climbers to scale Everest, aged only twenty-three. But this was just the beginning of his many extraordinary adventures...Known and admired by millions, Bear Grylls has survived where few would dare to go. From Calcutta to the snows of the Himalayas, Patrick French's "Younghusband: The Last Great Imperial Adventurer" pieces together the story of a man who embodies all the romance and folly of Britain's lost imperial dream. Soldier, explorer, mystic, guru and spy, Francis Younghusband began his colonial career as a military adventurer and became a radical visionary who preached free love to his followers. Patrick French's award-winning biography traces the unpredictable life of the maverick with the 'damned rum name', who singlehandedly led the 1904 British invasion of Tibet, discovered a new route from China to India, organized the first expeditions up Mount Everest and attempted to start a new world religion. "A story full of excitement and insight, humour and curiosity". (Michael Holroyd). "Breathtakingly accomplished". ("Observer"). "Beautifully written, wise, balanced, fair, funny and above all extremely original". (William Dalrymple). "Dazzling". (Niall Ferguson). "I found myself reading through the night. This is a rare gem of a book, one which so perfectly combines author and subject that it must set new standards for the future of historical biography". ("Independent on Sunday"). Patrick French is the author of "Younghusband: The Last Great Imperial Adventurer", which won the Somerset Maugham Award and the Royal Society of Literature W. H. Heinemann Prize, "Liberty or Death: India's Journey to Independence and Division", which won the "Sunday Times" Young Writer of the Year Award, "Tibet, Tibet: A Personal History of a Lost Land", "The World Is What It Is: The Authorized Biography of V.S. Naipaul", which was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Hawthornden Prize, and "India: A Portrait".

'If you are interested in vocabulary that is both spectacularly useful and beautifully useless, read on. I have read the "OED" so you don't have to!' Weighing in at 137 pounds, the "Oxford English Dictionary" is the word lover's Everest and the world's most exhaustive and exhausting dictionary - for instance, there are over 60,000 words on the various meanings of set and un- goes on for 451 pages. Like a lexicographical Edmund Hillary, Ammon Shea set out to boldly read, where no reader has gone before - from cover to cover."Reading the OED" gives a very funny account of his coffee-fuelled twelve months lost inside its 20 volumes. Divided into 26 chapters, one per letter of the alphabet, this book is part personal narrative (exploring everything from love to glasses to the superiority of books over computers) and part a collection of Shea's favourite discoveries. These span from the oddly useful (parabore - a defence against bores) to the downright bizarre (natiform - shaped like buttocks) and takes in Nashe's eight different kinds of drunkenness and all kinds of other strangely memorable information along the way.Filled with curiosities, delights and surprises, "Reading the OED" is a feast for language obsessives, from a man who loves words (perhaps a little too much).
