The loss of her mother has left Kali McKenzie with too many unanswered questions. But while clearing out Elena's art studio, she finds a drawer packed with postcards, each bearing an identical one-line message a Canadian gallery owner called Susannah Gillespie: thinking of you. Who is this woman and what does she know about Elena's hidden past? Desperate to find out, Kali travels with her toddler, Finn, to Susannah's isolated home on a remote British Columbian island, a place of killer whales and storms. But as bad weather closes in, Kali quickly realises she has made a big mistake. The handsome and enigmatic Susannah refuses to talk about the past, and as Kali struggles to piece together what happened back in the 1970s, Susannah's behaviour grows more and more erratic. Most worrying of all, Susannah is becoming increasingly preoccupied with little Finn ...A tense, thrilling novel about a family divided by secrets, and the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala...

Where the Sidewalk Ends turns forty! Celebrate with this anniversary edition that features an eye-catching commemorative red sticker. This classic poetry collection, which is both outrageously funny and profound, has been the most beloved of Shel Silverstein's poetry books for generations.§§Where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein's world begins. There you'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist.§§Shel Silverstein's masterful collection of poems and drawings is one of Parent - Child magazine's 100 Greatest Books for Kids. School Library Journal said, "Silverstein has an excellent sense of rhythm and rhyme and a good ear for alliteration and assonance that make these poems a pleasure to read aloud."§§Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back . In 1964, Shel's creativity continued to flourish as four more books were published in the same year- Don't Bump the Glump! , A Giraffe and a Half , Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros? , and the beloved classic The Giving Tree . Later he continued to build his remarkable body of work with Where the Sidewalk Ends , A Light in the Attic , Falling Up , Every Thing On It , The Missing Piece , The Missing Piece Meets the Big O , and Runny Babbit .§§Supports the Common Core State Standards.§

ABC about Collecting (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The ABC About Collecting A word in the ear of the people who "would like to collect if they knew anything at all about it," as the say. Listen. Seven dealers out of every ten know next to nothing about it now, and knew nothing at all about it when they began! This is an admitted fact, as a rule; the dealers themselves would confess it to you freely. Collecting is an art, not a business. And the average dealer knows rather less about any one "line" than does the average amateur. Dealers learn what they know from their customers; they have said so again and again. "I should very much like to collect old prints - coins, and medals - Georgian furniture," say Mr. Brown, Mr. Jones, Mr. Robinson. "I should like to fill the drawing-room cabinet with good old china," say unanimously their respective wives. "But we don't know how," they go on, with one voice - "it would cost a fortune - the dealers would rook us!" My dear Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Jones, and Robinson, I assure you, nothing of the sort. "It must be so difficult to become a judge!" you say. Oh, no! Nothing is easier and pleasanter than to learn when one hankers to learn. Besides, one learns in bits: one learns to collect by collecting. "But the real things cost so much!" Do they? People have to buy furniture and mantelpiece ornaments of one kind or another, and it is still a fact that you can buy fine old china for less than the price of china that is fine and new. A roomful of good old furniture, picked up a piece at a time, will cost you less than a roomful of furniture that is both new and as good. And the old things are much the more comfortable to live with. "But surely all the real bargains have been picked up long ago," says the doubter. Dear would-be amateur, bargains go begging in by-streets nearly every day! "But even bargains cost you a lot, to begin with," says the doubter. Do they? Listen again. Excerpt from The Haversack During the time that we remained here, we had nothing whatever to eat but what the men who were able to go out brought to us from the haversacks of dead soldiers on the field, and also what the man and his wife whom I have mentioned, gave to us. I left this place, in company with several others, for Manasses Junction, remaining there for a day and night, when Ave were placed on the cars to go to Richmond. On reaching there, we were conveyed to the Hospital from the cars in ambulances. The building used for this purpose was built for an almshouse, and very comfortable. While there, we received very kind treatment, as the Sisters of Charity had taken the whole control of it; before this was the case, we understood that the men had suffered much from neglect. We could find no fault here with the food or our medical treatment. The doctor, who had charge of the room in which I was, treated us very kindly. There was one of our boys who was extremely ill, and he brought him constantly little luxuries from his home; but he was soon discharged, and we thought it was because he had treated us so well. Some ladies also brought us fruit, cake, candies, and other luxuries, but this stopped as soon as discovered. I remained in this hospital for six weeks, and was then sent to one of the tobacco warehouses on Main Street, a three story brick building. I was placed in the third story, the first being occupied by the guard, and the second and third by the prisoners. Our rations here were very much changed, consisting of bread and a small piece of beef for breakfast; dinner and supper came together, of rice water, called soup, with occasionally a small piece of meat in it, but very rarely. This was all we had to eat while we were there. The floor on which we laid at night was covered with Yanks; and, although they knew that such was the case, they fired up into the building several times whilst I was there. What if we changed the face of evangelism? In a time when so many have a negative perception of evangelism, what if a new model was entirely biblical, loaded with skills, and more effective? Soul Whisperer shifts the emphasis from "telling" to a "drawing" paradigm. It develops biblically the pattern of Jesus, who did not give static presentations but rather customized his words to each hearer. By learning his ways, our words, too, can have pinpointed impact! Christians will discover how to draw out first, in order to read their friends and discern the relevant appeal of the gospel. In this way, the style is far more dynamic. It adapts! Understanding the non-believer's unique starting point will determine a distinct path. By creating a conversation about spiritual influence and what is involved in faith formation, this book charts ways for Christians to go deeper in evangelistic relationships. Most importantly, Soul Whisperer infuses skills that will shape a more Christ-likened missional disciple. "Comer covers a wide range of obstacles to faith-sharing that most of us experience. His discussions are honest, personally vulnerable, and rich with illustrations drawn from Scripture, contemporary culture, and personal encounters. The best commendation I can offer is that after reading the insights of Soul Whisperer I can say to myself, 'I think I could do that!'" --Eddie Gibbs, Professor Emeritus, Fuller Theological Seminary "I love it! This is one impressive piece of work. Not another book about telling the gospel, this one is about helping the gospel 'take' in people's hearts. Lots of people need to read this!" --Mike Barnes, Evangelism Pastor, The Grove Church "Soul Whisperer is about real evangelism. Gary is honest about the fact that we don't just go and tell the truths about Jesus, but we come alongside and help influence people as they discover the truth of Jesus. . . . But make no mistake, this book is not softening anything; he is once again helping the gospel regain its punch in our world!" --Matt Brown, Senior Pastor, Sandals Church "Soul Whisperer presents a can-do approach to evangelism. I love the simplicity and understanding Gary brings to how Jesus cuts through life issues in order to deal with the soul. Gary's observations and conclusions regarding the 'bridges of brokenness' and the intersections we all pass through . . . give keys for engaging with people who are caught in the dominion of darkness and need the deliverance only Christ can offer." --Bill Malick, District Superintendent, The Christian and Missionary Alliance "Home run! Gary Comer has rediscovered and masterly communicates the missing elements in today's evangelistic approaches. This book has helped me improve my own friendships with unbelievers. I am encouraging others in our ministry to read this indispensable and excellent book to shape and empower them to help those who are not yet followers of Christ discover the greatness and wonder of his salvation." --David Mills, Senior Pastor, Faith Community Church "There are lots of books about faith, about sharing faith, and about coming to faith. This one is about living your faith in such a way that people want faith, too. This is one about helping others find faith as a real part of their lives. . . . In a postmodern era, we can't be stuck with the old tools of modernity. Now, thanks to Soul Whisperer, we don't have to be." --Matt Hannan, Senior Pastor, New Heights Church Gary Comer serves as the Evangelism and Outreach Director at Sandals Church in Riverside, California. He also has founded Soul Whisperer Ministries, where he speaks, writes, and consults on missional effectiveness. He is a doctoral candidate at Talbot

New Filet Crochet Book Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The New Filet Crochet Book: Original Designs Which May Be Used Also for Cross-Stitch and Beadwork, With Patterns Represented in a New Way In mediaeval times Darned Netting, also called Lacis, was contemporary with the linen embroidery of that age. Cluny Guipure, one of the earliest forms, was known as Opus filatorium, or, in the Middle Ages as Spider Work. It shows a netted square-meshed background, identical with that of our modern Filet. The network is darned upon with counted stitches like tapestry, and by modern French workers is now called Point Conte or Filet Brode a Reprises: while in Italy the modern variety is called Guipure d'Art. The patterns woven into the netting are more or less elaborate but the same beautiful designs may be carried out in Filet Crochet, now so popular. The crochet, moreover, enables one to complete the design in one operation, the solid meshes as well as the open meshes being worked as you go along Filet Crochet is not new. Most of us have pieces handed down to us from our grandmothers. But since artists have thought it worth while to create new designs for this lace, the art has been wonderfully improved. The designs in this book arc not only artistic and beautiful but are strictly original and have never before been published. The method of representing them is also very unusual - the black spaces showing the open meshes and the white squares outlined in black, showing the solid meshes - thus making it very easy to count the squares and much less trying to the eyes than the old way. Another decided advantage to the worker is the table (see page 22) giving the size of a piece when worked with number 30, 50, 100 or 150 thread. This will enable the worker to select just the pattern needed to carry out the idea she has in mind. Those who have made a study of Coats of Arms and Heraldry will be delighted with the artistic perception and accuracy of such figures as No. 50, 56 and 78. Materials. Any good cotton thread may be used for Filet Crochet and silk thread also, the purse twist being the best for this use. The silky mercerized cottons and the beautiful linen threads are also very good. D. M. C. thread was used in all of the samples and finished pieces in this book. The only other things necessary are a good pattern, and a crochet hook. Use as fine a hook as can be used without splitting the thread. The material, if any is to be used together with the crocheted work, should also be considered and a thread chosen which will harmonize with the same. Excerpt from Russian Folk-Tales: With Introduction and Notes You know that there are all sorts in this world, good and bad, people who do not fear God, and feel no shame before their own brother. In a certain kingdom, in a certain land, there once lived a Tsar and Tsaritsa, who had one only daughter, Marya Tsarevna. But the old Tsaritsa died and the Tsar took to him a second wife, who was a witch. And the witch had three daughters, one of whom had one eye, the next two eyes, and the third had three. The stepmother could not abide Marya Tsarevna, and sent the girl with a dun cow on to the heath, and gave her a dry crust as her only food. Marya Tsarevna went on to the heath, bowed down to the right foot of the cow, and all at once was splendidly dressed, and had as much to eat and drink as she liked. So she guarded the dun cow the whole day, and looked as gay as any lady in the land. And at night she bowed down again in front of the right foot, and again became shabby and went home. And the bit of bread she took with her and offered it to her stepmother. "Whatever is she living on?" the witch thought, and she gave her the same piece of bread next day, and told her eldest daughter to watch what Marya Tsarevna did. Democracy in America (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Democracy in America: Volume One is probably the most well known work of Alexis De Tocqueville, a French author and philosopher. It is the author's examination of the social and political systems of the United States. Tocqueville's book was a major success upon its release and immediately became popular in both Europe and the United States. It is still considered one of the greatest pieces of political science literature ever written about the United States, and is a foundational text for the further study of the subject matter. It is a well written and highly readable book. The author had visited America on assignment to investigate the penal system, and while conducting his assigned research Tocqueville took a great interest in the larger political system of America. The book is divided into chapters which each focus on a different aspect of the American political and social system. The author approaches his subject matter thematically, highlighting major themes including the distinct spheres of American life, the influence of the country's Puritan foundation, and the importance of the Federal Constitution on daily life. Tocqueville is largely complementary of the American system, and frequently draws on his knowledge of the French system for comparisons. Democracy in America: Volume One remains an important piece of writing nearly two hundred years after its initial publication. Students of political science, particular in the United States, owe it to themselves to become familiar with Tocqueville's work. Anybody interested in the social and political history of the United States is encouraged to add this work to their library.
