Five Days in Quangostan New Generation Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

When ordinary, decent citizen Greg Kane takes up with the young actress in the flat opposite, he counts his blessings. Not every forty-something divorcee with kids gets looked after by an attractive, aspiring thespian like Meg. But bliss never lasts. Greg's car is nicked, and then he is too - on a trumped-up traffic charge. At the police station, Greg finds a highly confidential letter from the Chief Constable to the Home Secretary, and it's dynamite. So Greg nicks it. Back at his flat, all hell breaks loose. Broken bones, broken dreams, broken relationships - all sanctioned by the glorious State of Quangostan, a land which safeguards everyone except people like Greg and his girlfriend. Can they survive? Will the Chief Constable and her minions grind them down? As the muezzin booms out from mosques all over Blair-Brown Britain, Greg asks himself a lot of questions about his country and his place in it - or out of it. Don Coyote's irreverent and highly entertaining study of 'life, innit' has his hero tilting at windmills. But these windmills aren't imaginary. They're all too real, and they grind away at our sense of self and our belief in GB PLC. Take heed!

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Alain de Botton, best-selling author of How Proust can Change Your Life, has set six of the finest minds in the history of philosophy to work on the problems of everyday life. Here then are Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Montaigne, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche on some of the things that bother us all; lack of money, the pain of love, inadequacy, anxiety, the fear of failure and the pressure to conform.

In Confessions of a Bad Mother, Stephanie described how she brought up her children 'wrong'. Now she unlocks her singular inability (but one which secretly we all share) to grow up: forty-five last birthday but she doesn't feel any older, but of course she does - as in deafer, stiffer, and less able to read the dosage instructions on a bottle of Calpol. But the supposedly normal challenges of human existence feel frequently as though they are beyond her. Life is constantly confusing, frustrating and, at times, overwhelming. At forty-five - but only on paper - she's still a child in a suit, bluffing her way with one eye looking over her shoulder, expecting any minute to be found out and taken back to the nursery. Of course, that isn't such a bad place to be. Sometimes she even wants to go back there, but is cruelly aware that she no longer fits the chairs. Also featuring Things to Cook in Stilettos When You're Drunk, Why I am a Time Lord, A Hundred Ways to Wreck an Evening, Ten Things They Don't Tell You in Biology and The Grown-Ups' phrase book, Stephanie Calman's candid, touching and hysterically funny new book gives hope to bad mothers and failed grown-ups everywhere: read it and know that you are not alone.

The inimitable Richard Jury returns in the latest in the bestselling mystery series: "Martha Grimes has written a whodunit with terrific characters and a grand plot mixed with her unique droll wit. Vertigo 42 is one smart mystery!" (Susan Isaacs, bestselling author of Goldberg Variations )§§Richard Jury is meeting Tom Williamson at Vertigo 42, a bar on the forty-second floor of an office building in London's financial district. Despite inconclusive evidence, Tom is convinced his wife, Tess, was murdered seventeen years ago. The inspector in charge of the case was sure Tess's death was accidental - a direct result of vertigo - but the official police inquiry is still an open verdict and Jury agrees to re-examine the case.§§Jury learns that a nine-year-old girl fell to her death five years before Tess at the same place in Devon where Tess died, at a small house party. Jury seeks out the five surviving party guests, who are now adults, hoping they can shed light on this bizarre coincidence. Ultimately, four deaths - two in the past, two that occur on the pages of this intricate, compelling novel - keep Richard Jury and his sidekick Sergeant Wiggins running from their homes in Islington to the countryside in Devon and to London as they try to figure out if the deaths were accidental or not. And, if they are connected.§§Witty, well-written, with literary references from Thomas Hardy to Yeats, Vertigo 42 is a pitch perfect, page-turning novel from a mystery writer at the top of her game.

Siege of Malta 1565 - 2827056647

Siege of Malta 1565 BOYDELL PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This is the history of one of the great battles of the world, written by a private soldier who was an eye-witness. The siege of Malta was a crucial moment in the long struggle between Islam and Christendom for domination of the Mediterranean, fought out by unequal forces on the small island which commands the sea-routes at the centre of that sea. The Knights of St John were a survival from the medieval world, the largest of the surviving crusading orders, and they had been driven out of their base on Rhodes in the eastern Mediterranean after a great onslaught by the Turks in 1522. Now, forty-three years later, the Turkish ruler, Suleyman the Magnificent, who had been the victor at Rhodes, was determined to finish them off. He sent out a huge armada, carrying the pick of his army, under two commanders. Against this powerful force, the Knights could only raise a handful of men and mercenaries, and had to depend on the fortifications they had raised in the thirty-five years since they first came to Malta, which bore no comparison to the massive walls and ditches on Rhodes. Francisco Balbi di Correggio was a humble soldier of fortune who enlisted under the charismatic command of the Grand Master of the Order, Jean de la Valette. The extraordinary drama that unfolded after the first appearance of the Turkish fleet in the summer of 1565 is told in his own words, giving equal credit to the courage and leadership of the Knights and the grim determination of the ordinary people of Malta.

In 1968, the "Sunday Times" organised the Golden Globe race - an incredible test of endurance never before attempted - a round the world yacht race that must be completed single-handed and non-stop, going into port for repairs or supplies would mean disqualification. This remarkable challenge inspired the daring to enter - with or without sailing experience. "A Race Too Far" is the story of how the race unfolded, and how it became a tragedy for many involved. Of the nine sailors who started the race, four realised the madness of the undertaking and pulled out within weeks. The remaining five each have their own remarkable story. Chay Blyth, fresh from rowing the Atlantic with John Ridgway, had no sailing experience but managed to sail round the Cape of Good Hope before retiring. Nigel Tetley sank whilst in the lead with 1,100 nautical miles to go, surviving but dying in tragic circumstances two years later. Donald Crowhurst began showing signs of mental illness and tried to fake a round the world voyage. His boat was discovered adrift in an apparent suicide, but his body was never found. Bernard Moitessier abandoned the race whilst in a strong position and carried on to Tahiti, where he settled and fathered a child by a local woman despite having a wife and family in Paris. Robin Knox-Johnston was the only one to complete the race. It has undoubtedly become the most legendary of modern stories of men pitting themselves against the sea. Forty years on, Chris Eakin recreates the drama of the epic race, talking to all those touched by the tragedies surrounding the Golden Globe: the survivors, the widows and the children of those who died. It is a book that both evokes the primary wonder of the adventure itself and reflects on what it has come to mean to both those involved and the rest of us in the forty years since.

The speed of the German Blitzkrieg in 1940, the relative ease with which they brushed aside the Allied defenses, and took the Low Countries, meant five years of occupation. But in 1944, the Allied advance after the destruction of German forces in the Falaise pocket was as quick as the Blitzkrieg had been: the pocket closed on August 14; by September 6, British troops were in Ghent and Liege; Canadian forces liberated Ostend on the 8th allowing the Belgian Government in exile to return to its country; in northeast France, Patton's Third Army was moving rapidly to the German border, taking Rheims on August 29 and Verdun on the 30th. Paris was liberated on August 25th. The liberation of the Low Countries would not prove as straightforward, however. Operation Market Garden -- Montgomery's brave thrust toward Arnhem -- started on September 17, and hoped to end German resistance in the Low Countries at a stroke. It ended in failure on the 25th with over 6,000 paras captured, the bridge at Arnhem being the bridge too far. V-1 flying bombs had been launched from northern France and the Low Countries from August 1944. During September, the first V2s were fired, with Antwerp and Liege significant targets. In late October, operations began around Walcheren to clear the Scheldt and open the port of Antwerp to the Allies. Hard fighting continued until November 8 and mopping up operations after that, but by the 28th, the first Allied convoy entered Antwerp. Belgium was almost free of the Nazi yoke and the Netherlands looked likely to be cleared before Xmas. Then, on December 16, came Hitler's last roll of the dice: a major German counter-offensive began in the Ardennes aiming to split the Allied armies and retake Antwerp; in early 1945, the Germans also attacked along the Saar, hoping to take Strasbourg. It turned out to be their last try: the American defenderes held and with better weather, Patton's army and Allied air superiority told: the battle of the Bulge ended with Germany further weakened and after Operation Blackcock cleared the Roer triangle in January 1945, the Allies were poised to cross the Rhine into Germany. In the Netherlands, the cold winter of 1944-1945 and the German decision not to distribute food saw 30,000 Dutch civilians starve. In early 1945, the Canadians liberated the eastern and northern parts but they did not push west for fear of huge civilian casualties. Indeed, it took until three days before war's end for the Germans to surrender their grip on the Netherlands. Race to the Rhine is a companion to The Normandy Battlefields, and links modern aerial photography with contemporary illustrations to provide a modern interpretation of the battles, highly illustrated with maps, diagrams, and photographs. It is nearly 70 years since the Low Countries were freed from their occupation and Race tothe Rhine provides the armchair enthusiast with a graphic view of the battles. For those interested in visiting the sites, it will supply a guide to the places that best represent the battles today. About the Authors: Collaborators on a recent book on Normandy Battlefields, Leo Marriott and Simon Forty have worked together for more than 25 years. Leo is a retired Air Traffic Controller who has had more than 30 books published on his specialist subjects: naval warfare and aviation. He is an experienced pilot and accomplished aerial photographer, as his work in this book shows! Simon Forty has been working in publishing as an editor and an author for 35 years and edited Leo's first book, on Royal Naval Frigates, in time for the Falklands War-- and a subsequent sellout. He has cycled and toured the Low Countries' battlefields on many occasions.
