Gerhard Richter: Panorama TATE PUBLISHING

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

On the occasion of a major, touring, retrospective exhibition, a collaboration between Tate Modern, London, the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin and Centre Pompidou, Musée national d'art modern in Paris, this important book covers Richter's entire career. Spanning nearly five decades, and coinciding with the artist's 80th birthday, Gerhard Richter: Panorama is a major chronological retrospective that groups together significant moments of this remarkable painter's career. It includes portraits based on photographs such as the famous Betty 1988, abstractions, subtle landscapes, colour charts, works on paper, mirrors and three important glass constructions. Gerhard Richter was one of the first German artists to reflect on the history of National Socialism, creating paintings of family members who had been members, as well as victims of, the Nazis, as well as canvases reminiscent of images of the bombing of Dresden. In 1988 he produced the 15-part work October 18 1977, a sequence of black and white paintings based on images of the Baader Meinhof group. Richter has continued to respond to significant moments in history; the final room of the exhibition includes September 2005, a painting of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001. Alongside works responding to historical events, the show presents many of Richter's most ambitious abstract paintings from his 1974 colour chart containing 4096 different coloured squares, to his 20-metre long Stroke of 1980, presented for the first time outside Germany, to the magisterial and richly coloured Forest squeegee paintings of 1990, and culminating in the hauntingly beautiful six-part series Cage from 2006 on long loan to Tate. Gerhard Richter: Panorama is curated by Tate Director Nicholas Serota and Mark Godfrey.

Aaron Copland and His World Princeton University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Aaron Copland and His World reassesses the legacy of one of America's best-loved composers at a pivotal moment--as his life and work shift from the realm of personal memory to that of history. This collection of seventeen essays by distinguished scholars of American music explores the stages of cultural change on which Copland's long life (1900 to 1990) unfolded: from the modernist experiments of the 1920s, through the progressive populism of the Great Depression and the urgencies of World War II, to postwar political backlash and the rise of serialism in the 1950s and the cultural turbulence of the 1960s. Continually responding to an ever-changing political and cultural panorama, Copland kept a firm focus on both his private muse and the public he served. No self-absorbed recluse, he was very much a public figure who devoted his career to building support systems to help composers function productively in America. This book critiques Copland's work in these shifting contexts. The topics include Copland's role in shaping an American school of modern dance; his relationship with Leonard Bernstein; his homosexuality, especially as influenced by the writings of Andre Gide; and explorations of cultural nationalism. Copland's rich correspondence with the composer and critic Arthur Berger, who helped set the parameters of Copland's reception, is published here in its entirety, edited by Wayne Shirley. The contributors include Emily Abrams, Paul Anderson, Elliott Antokoletz, Leon Botstein, Martin Brody, Elizabeth Crist, Morris Dickstein, Lynn Garafola, Melissa de Graaf, Neil Lerner, Gail Levin, Beth Levy, Vivian Perlis, Howard Pollack, and Larry Starr.

Man and Microbes: Disease and Plagues in History and Modern Times POCKET BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

AIDS, Lyme disease, and the deadly hantavirus are just a few of the dozens of new diseases to arrive in recent years. Old ones such as TB and cholera have returned with sharper virulence. Where do new diseases come from? Why are old ones back as vicious changelings? Why now? We created this epidemic of epidemics by transforming our environment and behavior - our landscape, technology, and sex lives. Thus we hasten microbes' evolution and our own, making the world a global village for diseases. In Man and Microbes, respected science writer Arno Karlen presents a dramatic panorama of the natural history of disease. Drawing on case studies and tales of medical detection, he uncovers the ills of ancient hunter-gatherers, relates the rise of diseases that came with each domesticated species, and exposes the origins of modern urban epidemics. Citing original sources and extensive research, Karlen recounts the terror of measles and smallpox that raked the ancient empires of Rome and China; the intertwined stories of leprosy and tuberculosis throughout thousands of years of history; the onslaught of European microbes that devastated the peoples of the Americas far more than did the firearms of their conquerors; and the much-forgotten influenza pandemic of 1918 that killed tens of millions. He also analyzes the most recent medical reports of mysterious new diseases from around the world and provides a view of how they have arisen and what they bode for the future. Man and Microbes makes clear that infection is a natural and necessary part of life. It shows how the search for food, shelter, and a safer, more prosperous life has altered the environment, changed the dance of adaptation betweenhumans and microbes, and generated new diseases. The means to surmount the growing public health crisis in our ever-accelerating global society lie in the same ingenuity that created it. Understanding the complex and vital relationships between man and microbe can help us tame or mak

Sicily Before History G DUCKWORTH

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, one of the most varied in appearance, and least insular in terms of its cultural development. Often described as a meeting-place of cultures, a crucible of interaction between East and West, it presents archaeologists and historians with a complex panorama of shifting identities. This text charts the development of the island's prehistoric cultures from the Palaeolithic onwards, concluding with the Greek and Phoenician settlement in the eighth century BC. Contacts with Italy, nearby satellite islands and the Mycenean world, a capacity for local autonomy and a propensity to generate unique forms of cultural expression, all receive attention. Each chapter highlights the main findings in chronolgical order, accompanied by a discussion of economic and social themes, informed by approaches to interpretation within the wider spectrum of Mediterranean archaeology.

Spanning continents as well as disciplines, the first volume of the miniseries 'Many Peaces' presents a panorama of diverse interpretations of peace in world history and culture. Dietrich takes the reader on a fascinating journey through time and space, exploring the so-called five families of peace - energetic, moral, modern, post-modern and trans-rational. He stresses the importance of combining rationality and reason with human properties such as emotion and spirituality in applied peace work. This innovative book indicates a paradigm shift and proposes a new epistemological understanding of peace with enormous consequences for conflict work.

This book contains a review of the most important movements in 20th-century Polish music. It also presents profiles of those composers who are judged to have made valuable contributions to both Polish and world musical culture. Part 1 provides a context to the themes explored in Part 2. Chapter 1 contains a sketch of the development of Polish musical culture in the context of historical changes, an area which still requires thorough research, preferably conducted using a cross-disciplinary approach including sociology, political science and history of music. The present outline refers the reader to works describing some areas of this field of knowledge, but these should be treated rather as possible directions to be followed in further research. Chapter 2 presents the major musical ideas operating in the

Zła historia - Richard Shenkman

Książki & Multimedia > Książki

Opis - Richard Shenkman, amerykański obalacz historycznych mitów, legend i zwykłych kłamstw, autor kilku bestsellerowych publikacji podejmujących tę misję, w niniejszej książce odbywa brawurowy rajd przez dzieje powszechne. A groundbreaking survey of the Buddhist architecture of Southeast Asia, abundantly illustrated with new color photography and 3-D renderings Over the course of its 2,500-year history, Buddhism has found expression in countless architectural forms, from the great monastic complexes of ancient India to the fortified dzongs of Bhutan, the rock-carved temple grottoes of China, the wooden shrines of Japan, and the colorful wats of Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. Architecture of the Buddhist World, a projected six-volume series by the noted architect and scholar Vikram Lall, represents a new multidisciplinary approach to this fascinating subject, showing how Buddhist thought and ritual have interacted with local traditions across the Asian continent to produce masterpieces of religious architecture. The first volume in the series, The Golden Lands, is devoted to Southeast Asia, home to many of the most spectacular Buddhist monuments. Following a general introduction to the early history of Buddhism and its most characteristic architectural forms (the stupa, the temple, and the monastery), Lall examines the Buddhist architecture of Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos in turn. For each country, he provides both a historical overview and case studies of noteworthy structures. Lall's concise and accessible text is illustrated throughout with new color photography, as well as 3-D architectural renderings that make even the most complex structures easily comprehensible. The monuments that Lall considers in The Golden Lands range from the modest Bupaya stupa, constructed in Bagan, Myanmar, in the third century AD, to the vast complex of Borobudur in Central Java, the world's largest Buddhist monument; his achievement is to place them all within a single panorama of history, religion, and artistic innovation. No American statesman has been as revered and as reviled as Henry Kissinger. Hailed by some as the "indispensable man", whose advice has been sought by every president from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush, Kissinger has also attracted immense hostility from critics who have cast him as an amoral Machiavellian - the ultimate cold-blooded "realist".§In this remarkable new book, the first of two volumes, Niall Ferguson has created an extraordinary panorama of Kissinger's world, and a paradigm-shifting reappraisal of the man. Only through knowledge of Kissinger's early life (as a Jew in Hitler's Germany, a poor immigrant in New York, a GI at the Battle of the Bulge, an interrogator of Nazis, and a student of history at Harvard) can we understand his debt to the philosophy of idealism.§And only by tracing his rise, fall and revival as an adviser to Kennedy, Nelson Rockefeller and, finally, Richard Nixon can we appreciate the magnitude of his contribution to the theory of diplomacy, grand strategy and nuclear deterrence.§Drawing not only on Kissinger's hitherto closed private papers but also on documents from more than a hundred archives around the world, this biography is Niall Ferguson's masterpiece. Like his classic two-volume history of the House of Rothschild, Kissinger sheds dazzling new light on an entire era.

By Steppe, Desert, and Ocean Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

By Steppe, Desert, and Ocean is nothing less than the story of how humans first started building the globalized world we know today. Set on a huge continental stage, from Europe to China, it is a tale covering over 10,000 years, from the origins of farming around 9000 BC to the expansion of the Mongols in the thirteenth century AD. An unashamedly 'big history', it charts the development of European, Near Eastern, and Chinese civilizations and the growing links between them by way of the Indian Ocean, the silk Roads, and the great steppe corridor (which crucially allowed horse riders to travel from Mongolia to the Great Hungarian Plain within a year). Along the way, it is also the story of the rise and fall of empires, the development of maritime trade, and the shattering impact of predatory nomads on their urban neighbours. Above all, as this immense historical panorama unfolds, we begin to see in clearer focus those basic underlying factors - the acquisitive nature of humanity, the differing environments in which people live, and the dislocating effect of even slight climatic variation - which have driven change throughout the ages, and which help us better understand our world today.
