Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is a learner-centered and active learning environment where deep learning is cultivated by a process of inquiry owned by the learner. IBL has its roots in a constructivist educational philosophy and it is oriented around at least three components: 1) exploration and discovery (e.g., problem-based learning), 2) authentic investigations using contextualized learning (e.g., field studies), and 3) research-based approach (e.g., research-based learning). IBL encourages more self-regulated learning because the primary responsibility is on the learners to determine the issues and research questions and the resources they need to address the questions. In this way, learning occurs across all learning domains (affective, cognitive, and social) because different types of knowledge are acquired though experience with complex, real-life problems. This volume covers the many issues and concepts of how IBL can be applied to faculty and institutional development, serving as a conceptual and practical resource and guide for educators offering practical examples of IBL in action and diverse strategies for how to implement IBL in different contexts.

Canned laboratories and cook-book approaches to college science education do teach skills like operating equipment, making accurate measurements and working with numbers. Most laboratory exercises emphasize the reinforcement of concepts discussed in class, but they do not teach students how to take a scientific approach to an area of interest about the natural world. Science is more than just techniques, measurements and facts, and these laboratory exercises do not foster the critical thinking and interpretation skills crucial to scientific research. Released in the wake of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science's (AAAS) "Vision and Change "in Undergraduate Biology Education: A Call to Action in 2011, many undergraduate educators have been attempting to revamp their curriculum to address these concerns, but problems abound; as Susman writes, it's not easy to redesign curriculum to meet these standards, and there is no good guide for the enthusiastic undergraduate instructors on how to do so. The goal of this book is to present a different way of organizing and developing biology teaching laboratories, to promote both deep learning and understanding of core concepts, while still teaching the creative process of science. In eight chapters, Susman guides undergraduate instructors in creating their own inquiry based experiments. The first chapter introduces the text with an articulation of why the book is so timely and necessary; the chapters that follow address pedagogical goals and desired outcomes, incorporating discovery-based laboratory experiences at the introductory level, realistic constraints on such lab experiments, model scenarios for both introductory and intermediate-level life science courses, and alternate ways to enhance student understanding. The book concludes with a reflection on the four imperatives outlined in the "Vision and Change" report-- climate, food, energy and health-- and how we can use these laboratory experiments to encompass those imperatives.

On Symbols and Society - 2854317034

Kenneth Burke's innovative use of dramatism and dialectical method have made him a powerful critical force in an extraordinary variety of disciplines--education, philosophy, history, psychology, religion, and others. While most widely acclaimed as a literary critic, Burke has elaborated a perspective toward the study of behavior and society that holds immense significance and rich insights for sociologists. This original anthology brings together for the first time Burke's key writings on symbols and social relations to offer social scientists access to Burke's thought. In his superb introductory essay, Joseph R. Gusfield traces the development of Burke's approach to human action and its relationship to other similar sources of theory and ideas in sociology; he discusses both Burke's influence on sociologists and the limits of his perspective. Burke regards literature as a form of human behavior--and human behavior as embedded in language. His lifework represents a profound attempt to understand the implications for human behavior based on the fact that humans are "symbol-using animals." As this volume demonstrates, the work that Burke produced from the 1930s through the 1960s stands as both precursor and contemporary key to recent intellectual movements such as structuralism, symbolic anthropology, phenomenological and interpretive sociology, critical theory, and the renaissance of symbolic interaction.
