I love to do things with words, and poetry is what comes from such playing with words. Most of my poems are just my mind, playing with my heart's thoughts. Some of my poems come from life experience and others from nature or things that happen in life. In putting this book together, I found many of my poems are liked, for they are written in words that everyone can read and understand. I dream one day to hear someone say, "I read that poem and loved it." Nothing would make me more proud than to know my poems touched someone's heart in a good way. To write poems and not know if people will ever read them is a sad thought. Love is the power that moves the world. No matter if it is heartbreak or true passion, love has the power to be the strongest influence in our lives. Not all my poems are love poems. There are also poems of remembrance for the men who have laid down their lives for freedom or in the line of duty. So please read my words and enjoy them for what they mean and say to you. I would love to be thought of as a man who had love in his soul, and touched another's heart in some way. Daniel Clark is from Canada. He makes his living as a truck driver, but in his heart, there is love of poetry. He wrote these poems from life experience and nature. This is his first book. Publisher's website:

Greek Models of Mind and Self HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This lively book offers a wide-ranging study of Greek notions of mind and human selfhood from Homer through Plotinus. A. A. Long anchors his discussion in questions of recurrent and universal interest. What happens to us when we die? How is the mind or soul related to the body? Are we responsible for our own happiness? Can we achieve autonomy? Long asks when and how these questions emerged in ancient Greece, and shows that Greek thinkers modeling of the mind gave us metaphors that we still live by, such as the rule of reason or enslavement to passion. He also interrogates the less familiar Greek notion of the intellect s divinity, and asks what that might mean for us. Because Plato s dialogues articulate these themes more sharply and influentially than works by any other Greek thinker, Plato receives the most sustained treatment in this account. But at the same time, Long asks whether Plato s explanation of the mind and human behavior is more convincing for modern readers than that contained in the older Homeric poems. Turning to later ancient philosophy, especially Stoicism, Long concludes with an exploration of Epictetus s injunction to live life by making correct use of one s mental impressions. An authoritative treatment of Greek modes of self-understanding, Greek Models of Mind and Self "demonstrates how ancient thinkers grappled with what is closest to us and yet still most mysterious our own essence as singular human selves and how the study of Greek thought can enlarge and enrich our experience."

Most people would agree that the healthcare system in the United States is a mess. Healthcare accounts for a larger percentage of gross domestic product in the United States than in any other industrialized nation, but health outcomes do not reflect this enormous investment. In this book, Philip Rosoff offers a provocative proposal for providing quality healthcare to all Americans and controlling the out-of-control costs that threaten the economy. He argues that rationing -- often associated in the public's mind with such negatives as unplugging ventilators, death panels, and socialized medicine -- is not a dirty word. A comprehensive, centralized, and fair system of rationing is the best way to distribute the benefits of modern medicine equitably while achieving significant cost savings. Rosoff points out that certain forms of rationing already exist when resources are scarce and demand high: the organ transplant system, for example, and the distribution of drugs during a shortage. He argues that if we incorporate certain key features from these systems, healthcare rationing would be fair -- and acceptable politically. Rosoff considers such topics as fairness, decisions about which benefits should be subject to rationing, and whether to compensate those who are denied scarce resources. Finally, he offers a detailed discussion of what an effective and equitable healthcare rationing system would look like.

Selected Poems by Sophie Hannah - A revised and updated second edition of the T.S. Eliot shortlisted author. Since publishing her first book, Sophie Hannah has been recognized as one of the most important poets writing in Britain. Chosen in 1999 by The Times as the 'New Writer to Watch' and by the Daily Telegraph as one of the 'Stars of the New Millenium', she has published five bestselling collections, and this is the only selection covering the breadth of her work. This revised edition now includes work from Hannah's most recent volume, Pessimism for Beginners, which was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize, as well as several new poems. "Hannah is among the best at comprehending in rhyming verse the indignity of having a body and the nobility of having a heart". (Guardian). "Shall I put it in captials? Sophie Hannah is a genius". (Poetry Review). "A wonderful Poet". (Observer). "Hannah's range is astonishn: most readers will come away having been changed or delighted". (Daily Telegraph). "A shrewd and accurate observer of the world around her, and her own life, she is often very funny". (Oldie). It is a revised and updated second edition of Sophie Hannah's poems. As well as all the poems from the previous book, it includes a selection from Pessimism for Beginners, which was shortlisted for the 2007 T. S. Eliot Prize, and nine new poems, previously unpublished. Sophie Hannah was born in Manchester in 1971, and now lives in West Yorkshire. She has published four collections of poetry and is a regular performer of her own work. In June 2004, her fourth poetry book, First of the Last Chances, was chosen for the Poetry Book Society's 'Next Generation' promotion. Sophie also writes fiction and won first prize in the 2004 Daphne Du Maurier Festival short story competition. In May 2007, Sort of Books will publish her first collection of short stories. T. S. Eliot the Poems Faber & Faber Poetry

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Poems of T. S. Eliot is the authoritative edition of one of our greatest poets, scrupulously edited by Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue. It provides, for the first time, a fully scrutinized text of Eliot's poems, carefully restoring accidental omissions and removing textual errors that have crept in over the full century in which Eliot has been so frequently printed and reprinted. The edition also presents many poems from Eliot's youth which were published only decades later, as well as others that saw only private circulation in his lifetime, of which dozens are collected for the first time. To accompany Eliot's poems, Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue have provided a commentary that illuminates the creative activity that came to constitute each poem, calling upon drafts, correspondence and other original materials to provide a vivid account of the poet's working processes, his reading, his influences and his revisions. The first volume respects Eliot's decisions by opening with his Collected Poems 1909-1962 in the form in which he issued it, shortly before his death fifty years ago. There follow in this first volume the uncollected poems from his youth that he had chosen to publish, along with such other poems as could be considered suitable for publication. The second volume opens with the two books of poems of other kinds that he issued, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and his translation of Perse's Anabase, moving then to verses privately circulated as informal or improper or clubmanlike. Each of these sections is accompanied by its respective commentary, and then, pertaining to the entire edition, there is a comprehensive textual history recording variants both manuscript and published. The Poems of T. S. Eliot is a work of enlightening scholarship that will delight and inform all those who read Eliot for pleasure, as well as all those who read with pleasure and for study. Here are a new accuracy and an unparalleled insight into the marvels and landmarks from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and The Waste Land through to Four Quartets.

Prison Poems of Nikolai Bukharin Seagull Books London Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Nikolai Bukharin (1888-1938), an original Bolshevik leader and a founder of the Soviet state, spent the last year of his life imprisoned by Stalin, awaiting trial and eventual execution. Remarkably, during that time, from March 1937 to March 1938, Bukharin wrote four book-length manuscripts by hand in his prison cell. Seventy years later, "The Prison Poems" is the last of these four manuscripts - which include "How It All Began: The Prison Novel" and "Socialism and Its Culture" - to be published, allowing readers to grasp Bukharin's vision in its full extent. Bukharin organized the nearly 180 poems in this volume, written from June to November 1937, into several series. Two series of poems - one dealing with forerunners to the 1917 Russian Revolution and another focusing on the Russian Civil War - address topics not found in the other prison manuscripts. The same is true of the "Lyrical Intermezzo" poems for and about Anna Larina, his young wife, from whom he was separated by his imprisonment. This first English translation of Bukharin's "Prison Poems" is a compelling read, evidencing the powerful intersection of politics and art.

Excerpt from Poems and Ballads for Penny Readings: Original and Translated From the German Tel-el-Kebir. [Lieutenant Harvey Goodwin Brookes, of the Gordon Highlanders, fell at Tel-el-Kebir pierced by four rifle-balls, leading his men with no other weapon than a spade, having lost his claymore in the sand. His body was found twenty yards beyond the first trench.] Bury him here in the blood-stain'd sand, On the spot where he bravely fell; With his broken spade in his cold right hand, The spade that he swung so well. We halted our march through the starlit night One hour, the attack to form; Gleam'd bright in his eye the battle light, And he burn'd for the coming storm. This text comprises two collections of Ivor Gurney's poetry. "Best Poems" consists of fair copies of 64 poems. "The Book of Five Makings" is more of a working draft, with recastings of the same poems, revealing the process by which he brought his work to completion. This text contains 52 poems and eight revised versions. Of the 116 poems in these volumes, only 25 are previously collected. Gurney's career began with two small volumes of verse, "Severn and Somme" and "War's Ember's". Then in 1922 he entered an asylum from which only an occasional poem in a magazine emerged, but he did not stop writing. Gurney put volumes of his work together, as John Clare did a century earlier, without hope of publication. The various titles he had in mind, such as "Rewards of Wonder" state his poetic position and represent his own viewpoint.

Golden Texts from the Works of William Shakespeare Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Golden Texts From the Works of William Shakespeare: A Collection of Quotations From the Plays and Poems Arranged Under Proper Classification "Bread of flour is good: but there is bread sweet as honey, if we would eat it, in a good book." What sweeter honey than the thoughts gleaned from the books of the Bard of Avon? How easily our souls may transcend these three hundred years and be united with this noble spirit, if our souls but will. What joy it is to wander with Romeo to Juliet's window, to live through that beautiful night of youth and love; what fancies are born in Othello's indomitable jealousy; what mirth in Falstaff's fall. In them the master mind has struck a chord which will reverberate for all time for all men who will but listen. Ruskin says, "the essence of vulgarity is lack of sensation." What can we say of Shakespeare; he leads our fancies hither and thither, first through the highways of mirth and laughter, then through the labyrinths of life into the depths of sorrow. They live, they breathe, these beings of Shakespeare's fancy; they speak the most beautiful thoughts that were ever conceived in the mind of man. It examines political and military conflicts throughout human history and finds no exception to one of the claims made by the controversial democratic peace theory: well-established liberal democracies have never made war on one another. In addition to the democratic peace, Weart argues that there is also an oligarchic peace and provides a new explanation for both the democratic and oligarchic peace. The book is often mentioned in the academic debate and has received both praise and criticism. Due to the long time period, Weart has often relied on the works of other historians but has consulted at least five works for even trivial crises involving democracies and oligarchies. Some cases have never been studied with this question in mind and he has then used primary sources which included reading works in French, German (including Alemannic Germ...

This book is geared to be a transmission of life's miracles, small and great, and to set your wheels in motion, going forward on your life's pathway and with only one purpose in mind: to build your faith and trust in Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our salvation. By revealing myself to you, the reader, in a very personal way, I hope to instill in you how Jesus reveals Himself to me, as He leads me on. In doing this, I hope to be of help to you as you see how simple it can be to know His will. God Bless You! Ninety percent of the profits from sales of this book will go toward missions. Born and raised in Sweden, where I completed my elementary schooling, I immigrated to Canada with my parents in 1957, the oldest of four boys. We returned to Sweden in 1962 and from then on I was very independent, working, living, and travelling in North and South America, Europe and the Middle East, until finally settling in British Columbia, Canada, again, with my own family in 1974. Throughout my entire life, I've trusted Jesus and can't thank Him enough for my Christian parents, who gave me a God-honouring start in my life. Dad was a full-gospel-living-preaching minister and my mentor. I'm now a retired Jack-of-all-trades and master of some.

'Only with the greatest of simplifications, for the sake of convenience, can we say Africa. In reality, except as a geographical term, Africa doesn't exist'. Ryszard Kapuscinski has been writing about the people of Africa throughout his career. In a study that avoids the official routes, palaces and big politics, he sets out to create an account of post-colonial Africa seen at once as a whole and as a location that wholly defies generalised explanations. It is both a sustained meditation on the mosaic of peoples and practises we call 'Africa', and an impassioned attempt to come to terms with humanity itself as it struggles to escape from foreign domination, from the intoxications of freedom, from war and from politics as theft. The Beginning: Collision, Ghana 1958 More than anything, one is struck by the light. Light everywhere. Brightness everywhere. Everywhere, the sun. Just yesterday, an autumnal London was drenched in rain. The airplane drenched in rain. A cold, wind, darkness. But here, from the morning
