Security Community Betascript Publishing
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
A security community is a region in which a large-scale use of violence (such as war) has become very unlikely or even unthinkable. The term was coined by the prominent political scientist Karl Deutsch in 1957. In their seminal work Political community and the North Atlantic area: international organization in the light of historical experience, Deutsch and his collaborators defined a security community as a group of people believing that they have come to agreement on at least this one point: that common social problems must and can be resolved by processes of peaceful change .

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... American History Oxford University Press

This brief history of America will span the earliest migrations to the present, reflecting Paul S. Boyer's interests in social, intellectual, and cultural history, including popular culture and religion. It will reflect his personal view of American history, in which a sense of paradox and irony loom large. While noting positive achievements-political, economic, social, and cultural-he will also discuss the United States's failures to live up to its oft-stated ideals; although America has figured in the world's imagination (and its own self-image) as a "land of opportunity" offering "liberty and justice for all," the reality has often fallen short. For example, the establishment of the North American colonies had very different meanings for colonists from the British Isles and Europe, for Native peoples, and for enslaved Africans brought against their will. The late nineteenth century saw not only impressive industrial expansion and the creation of vast fortunes but also appalling conditions in urban-immigrant slums and a degraded, exploited labor force. The twentieth-century emergence of a suburban society of consumer abundance meant a better life for many and laid the groundwork for impressive cultural creativity, yet left behind crime-ridden inner cities and spawned a stultifying mass culture. The immigrants who have renewed and revitalized the nation have also stirred hostility and resentment. While American popular culture has demonstrated global appeal, the projection of U.S. military power abroad, from the Philippines early in the twentieth century to Iraq early in the twenty-first, has sometimes failed in its purpose and damaged the nation's international standing. Although this book will not be a muckraking expose or anachronistic moral tract, neither will it be a celebratory panegyric or a bland recital of facts. Excerpt: This is a list of country calling codes defined by ITU-T recommendations E.123 and E.164, also called IDD (International Direct Dialling) or ISD (International Subscriber Dialling) codes. The telephone numbering plan for a telephone system includes an international dialing prefix, such as "00" or "011", which is added before the country calling code and is specific to the country from which the caller is dialling. Generally, as in the list below, the need for this prefix is specified with a "+". International calling codes Country calling codes form a prefix code; hence, they can be organized as a tree. In each row of the table below, the country codes given in the leftmost column share the same first digit; then subsequent columns give the second digit in ascending order. While there is a general geographic grouping to the zones, many exceptions exist for various political and historical reasons. Thus, the geographical indicators below are approximations only. Areas within NANPA (North American Numbering Plan Area) are assigned area codes as if they were all areas within one country. The codes below in format +1 XXX represent area code XXX within the +1 NANPA zone - not a separate country code. The North American Numbering Plan Area includes: +1 Many, but not all, Caribbean nations: +213 - Algeria+214 - unassigned+215 - unassigned+216 - Tunisia+217 - unassigned+218 - Libya+219 - unassigned+220 - Gambia+221 - Senegal+222 - Mauritania+223 - Mali+224 - Guinea+225 - Côte d'Ivoire+22...

This work examines the labyrinth of complexities that confronts the Intelligence Community in its efforts to provide accurate and timely intelligence in support of American foreign policy and national security interests. Kennedy begins with an analysis of the collection processes and the obstacles that must be overcome if accurate and meaningful information is to be obtained. He addresses such issues as the need for strategic vision and clarity in setting priorities, as well as constraints imposed by the executive branch and the complexities associated with translating priorities into collection programs. The focus then shifts to the obstacles that confront those tasked to analyze collected information, examining such issues as the impact of people, technology, and budgets on the overall analytical effort. The third area of emphasis for Kennedy centers on the quality control of collection and analysis, addressing both Executive Branch and Congressional Oversight of the intelligence processes. Finally, he examines issues associated with the distribution and use of the intelligence products - the so-called end game obstacles. Issues addressed include the lack of presidential support for and confidence in the Intelligence Community, the impact of worst-case planning, and the coloring of intelligence to suit policy preferences. Ultimately, the component parts provide the reader with a broad understanding of the Intelligence Community and the difficulties it faces as it strives to keep the United States safe and informed. In the wake of recent intelligence failures, the Intelligence Community has come under increasing attack. Yet few people outside of government, and all too frequently many inside of government, do not understand just how difficult and complex are the processes of collecting, analyzing, disseminating, and effectively using gathered intelligence. The purpose of this undertaking is to illustrate the many road blocks the Intelligence Community confronts as it attempts to meet the needs of policymakers and to provide the average American, students of foreign and security policy, and many inside of government with a more comprehensive understanding of the overall intelligence effort. The complex processes for identifying, prioritizing, and communicating requirements to the intelligence community are further complicated by a lack of strategic vision on the part of American policy makers. Kennedy contends that those problems are compounded by Executive department oversight of the Intelligence Community, which has contributed significantly to past failures of intelligence. Moreover, the lack of effective oversight by Congress of the Intelligence Community in terms of the quality of its product upon which Congress has often been required to make life and death decisions too often has been either seriously deficient or non-existent. All too frequently, Kennedy notes, what could be called political coloring adversely affects the intelligence product. Intelligence findings are often colored to suit the preferred policies of decision-makers. As a result, actions are taken based on assumptions and opinions that are not supported by existing intelligence.
Arabs in America Temple University Press,U.S.

For many North Americans, Arab-Americans are invisible, recalled only when words like 'terrorism' or 'anti-American sentiments' arise. However, people of Arab descent have been contributing to U.S. and Canadian culture since the 1870's in fields as diverse as literature, science, politics, medicine, and commerce witness surgeon Michael DeBakey, former Oregon governor Victor Atiyeh, consumer advocate Ralph Nader, and Canadian M.P. Mac Harb. Yet, while Arab-American contributions to our society are significant and Arab-Americans surpass the U.S. average in both education and economics, they still struggle for recognition and acceptance. In this volume, editor Michael Suleiman brings together 21 prominent scholars from a wide range of perspectives including anthropology, economics, history, law, literature and culture, political science, and sociology to take a close look at the status of Arabs in North America. Topics range from the career of Arab-American singer, dancer, and storyteller Wadeeha Atiyeh to a historical examination of Arab-Americans and Zionism. The contributors discuss an assortment of different communities a Palestinian refugee community in Detroit, a group of well-educated Jordanian men, and the Shi'a Muslims in order to illustrate the range of Arab emigre experience. More broadly, they examine Arabs in the legal system, youth and family, health and welfare, as well as Arab-American identity, political activism, and attempts by Arab immigrants to achieve respect and recognition in their new homes. They address both the present situation for Arab-Americans and prospects for their future. "Arabs in America" will engage anyone interested in Arab-American studies, ethnic studies, and American studies. Michael W. Suleiman is University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science at Kansas State University. He has written and co-edited numerous works in the field of Arab American studies, including "U.S. Policy on Palestine from Wilson to Clinton" and "Arab Americans: Continuity and Change".
Dox Thrash University of Washington Press

The remarkable African American artist Dox Thrash has been frequently included in dictionaries, text books, and group exhibitions, but has been little studied until now. This stunning catalog features prints, drawings, and watercolors through which Thrash expressed a consciousness about the perception of blacks within the racist structures of both American society and Western art history. Working in a 'racial idiom' through these portraits, historical vignettes, and nudes, Thrash portrayed the American scene as he experienced it. Whether presenting a portrait of a strong, black individual, an unflinching image of racial violence, or a frank celebration of the black female body, Thrash was confronting cultural history through his art. His oeuvre can be seen as an interweaving of the human, the personal, the historical, and the political. Born in Griffin, Georgia in 1893, Dox Thrash compensated for his lack of formal education with a love of reading. After serving in the army during World War I, Thrash pursued his first formal art training in 1919 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After several years of traveling, during which he worked part-time jobs and drew portraits, he settled in Philadelphia where he remained until his death in 1965. At the height of the Depression, in 1936, Thrash joined the government-sponsored Graphic Arts Workshop of the Works Progress Administration in Philadelphia as a seasoned printmaker with a taste for experimentation. Philadelphia boasted the only Graphic Arts Division of the WPA devoted entirely to the development and production of fine art prints. While serving as head of the graphics division Thrash invented the carborundum printmaking process when he discovered that gritty carborundum crystals, normally employed to remove images from lithograph stones, could also be used to prepare copper plates for etching. The process was quickly adopted and adapted by other members of the WPA workshop, including a number of Thrash's younger African American colleagues, but the compelling imagery and rich chiaroscuro of Thrash's own carborundum prints have insured that it is his name that is most closely linked with this innovative method. Drawn from public and private collections, the book features a number of prints Thrash executed using the carborundum process. The selection also demonstrates his mastery of various other methods of printmaking in black and white and color, such as etching, aquatint, lithography, linoleum cut, as well as his accomplishments as a draughtsman and watercolorist. The works document the range of Thrash's compelling imagery, including scenes from his childhood in the rural south; hard times in the urban north in the 1930s; patriotic war work of the early 1940s; and poetic portraits of his community and its residents. The book focuses on the WPA period, as well as on the 1940s and 1950s, when Thrash's prints and drawings were shown in exhibitions in major cities across the United States, from Boston to San Francisco, as well as Mexico City. He was prominently featured in two landmark exhibitions in Chicago in the early 1940s: Art of the American Negro (1851-1940) during the American Negro Exposition in 1940, and We Too Look at America, the inaugural exhibition of Chicago's South Side Community Art Centre when it was formally opened by Eleanor Roosevelt in May, 1941.Subsequent solo exhibitions of Thrash's work were held in Philadelphia at the Pyramid Club, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Lincoln University, and in Washington, D. C. at Howard University and at what is now known as the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.Included in the book are four insightful essays: 'Thrash and the 'Racial Idiom" by Kymberly N. Pinder of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; an account of the activities of the WPA Graphic Arts Workshop in Philadelphia by Cindy Medley-Buckner of the Baltimore Museum of Art; an exploration of the central role played by the Pyramid Club in African American cultural life in Philadelphia in the 1940s and 1950s by David Brigham of the Worcester Art Museum; and a biography of the artist focusing on his career as a printmaker by John Ittman, Curator of Prints at the Philadelphia Museum of art and the organizer of the exhibition.

Around the turn of the twentieth century, and for decades thereafter, Oregon had the second largest Chinese population in the United States. In terms of geographical coverage, Portland's two Chinatowns (one an urban area of brick commercial structures, one a vegetable-gardening community of shanty dwellings) were the largest in all of North America. Marie Rose Wong chronicles the history of Portland's Chinatowns from their early beginnings in the 1850s until the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in the 1940s, drawing on exhaustive primary material from the National Archives, including more than six thousand individual immigration files, census manuscripts, letters, and newspaper accounts, She examines both the enforcement of Exclusion Laws in the United States and the means by which Chinese immigrants gained illegal entry into the country. The spatial and ethnic makeup of the combined 'Old Chinatown' afforded much more contact and accommodation between Chinese and non-Chinese people than is usually assumed to have occurred in Portland, and than actually may have occurred elsewhere. "Sweet Cakes, Long Journey" explores the contributions that Oregon's leaders and laws had on the development of Chinese American community life, and the role that the early Chinese immigrants played in determining their own community destiny and the development of their Chinatown in its urban form and vernacular architectural expression. "Sweet Cakes, Long Journey" is an original and notable addition to the history of Portland and to the field of Asian American studies.

Modern Moves traces the movement of American social dance styles between black and white cultural groups and between immigrant and migrant communities during the early twentieth century. Its central focus is New York City, where the confluence of two key demographic streams - an influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe and the growth of the city's African American community particularly as it centered Harlem - created the conditions of possibility for hybrid dance forms like blues, ragtime, ballroom, and jazz dancing. Author Danielle Robinson illustrates how each of these forms came about as the result of the co-mingling of dance traditions from different cultural and racial backgrounds in the same urban social spaces. The results of these cross-cultural collisions in New York City, as she argues, were far greater than passing dance trends; they in fact laid the foundation for the twentieth century's social dancing practices throughout the United States. By looking at dance as social practice across conventional genre and race lines, this book demonstrates that modern social dancing, like Western modernity itself, was dependent on the cultural production and labor of African diasporic peoples - even as they were excluded from its rewards. A cornerstone in Robinson's argument is the changing role of the dance instructor, which was transformed from the proprietor of a small-scale, local dance school at the end of the nineteenth century to a member of a distinct, self-identified social industry at the beginning of the twentieth. Whereas dance studies has been slow to connect early twentieth century dancing with period racial politics, Modern Moves departs radically from prior scholarship on the topic, and in so doing, revises social and African American dance history of this period. Recognizing the rac(ial)ist beginnings of contemporary American social dancing, it offers a window into the ways that dancing throughout the twentieth century has provided a key means through which diverse groups of people have navigated shifting socio-political relations through their bodily movement. Modern Moves asserts that the social practice of modern dancing, with its perceived black origins, empowered displaced people such as migrants and immigrants to grapple with the effects of industrialization, urbanization, and the rise of North American modernity. Far more than simple appropriation, the selling and practicing of "black" dances during the 1910s and 1920s reinforced whiteness as the ideal racial status in America through embodied and rhetorical engagements with period black stereotypes.

We are pleased to now be able to offer a map covering both sides of the important American/Mexican border areas. One has to always keep in mind that borders are artificial constraints dividing people into categories - Canadians on this side of the fence, Mexicans on that - but the reality of American life is that these political boundaries have to be very porous to enable trade and free movement of people who are closely related to each other. Of course, there are always cross-border frictions, but they are always solvable. This is not 'just' a map showing the border. Of course, it does that, as does our US/Canadian Border map. This map extends well into both the USA and Mexico to show the best of what each country has to offer within a reasonable driving distance. For instance, the US side extends north from San Diego all the way to Las Vegas eastward to Flagstaff, San Antonio, and Houston, showing touristic attractions across this vast area of America. Yes, the map shows the border and its many legal crossing points and no, this map won't help people to enter the USA illegally. The Mexican side shows well-known and attractive venues such as Monterrey, Ciudad Victoria, Torreon, and Chihuahua, as well as the northern portion of Baja California. The famous Copper Canyon railway route from Los Mochis to Cuauhtemoc is shown as is the oldest urban area settled by Europeans in the USA and no, it isn't Jamestown, It's Presidio, Texas! This is a map for exploring, and whether that means in an east-west routing inside one country, or a north-south inter-mingling remains the purview of the user. Mexico is a lovely country just recovering from an extremely troubling drug-inspired war. Travel to Mexico is increasing as peace returns to a troubled land and this map makes it possible to enjoy the best of two countries. Legend Includes: Roads by classification, Points of Interest, National Parks, Airports, Tourist Information, Golf Courses, Hot Springs, Border Crossings, Gas Stations, Universities, Museums, Ski Areas, Lighthouses, Beaches, Caves, Campsites, Indian Reserves, Waterfalls, Viewpoints, Military Areas, Churches, Hotels, Forts, Ruins, Surfing/Scuba Diving Spots, Potteries, Picnicsites, Fishing Spots, Hospitals, and much more.
