Impact of Population Growth on Sustainable Food Security: A Study on LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The size of the population in proportion to the food production is highly relevant in the level of development of a nation, as it has a direct bearing on the quality of life of the inhabitants. As the population of the Rajshahi division in Bangladesh grows rapidly and its trend varies regionally, it is important for the socio-economic planning purposes for a region to follow the regional trends of the dynamics of population and food production, both in space and through time. Considering the spatio-temporal dynamics and distinctiveness, the relationship between population growth and food supply in the Rajshahi division deserves special investigation. The Rajshahi division is situated in the north western corner of the Bangladesh facing various natural calamities like drought, frequent flood, river bank erosion etc. The population of Rajshahi division was increased at high rate during 1974, 1981 and 1991 and it was decreased in 2001. The food grain requirement is increased as well as population growth. It increased at 76.39 percent in the last 25 years. The food production was almost doubled in 2007-08 than the year of 1981-82.

The Dynamics of Socio-Economic Development Cambridge University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Why are poor countries poor and rich countries rich? How are wealth and poverty related to changes in nutrition, health, life expectancy, education, population growth and politics? This modern, non-technical 2005 introduction to development studies explores the dynamics of socio-economic development and stagnation in developing countries. Taking a quantitative and comparative approach to contemporary debates within their broader context, Szirmai examines historical, institutional, demographic, sociological, political and cultural factors. Key chapters focus on economic growth, technological change, industrialisation, agricultural development, and consider social dimensions such as population growth, health and education. Each chapter contains comparative statistics on trends from a sample of twenty-nine developing countries. This rich statistical database allows students to strengthen their understanding of comparative development experiences. Assuming no prior knowledge of economics the book is suited for use in inter-disciplinary development studies programmes as well as economics courses, and will also interest practitioners pursuing careers in developing countries.

Hidden Cost of Economic Development - 2212832527

Hidden Cost of Economic Development Ashgate Publishing Company

Inne 1

During the mid-nineteenth century, the American economy grew rapidly as industrialization began to take a firm hold on the nation, and per capita net national product increased significantly. Yet despite this economic bustle and increased affluence, signs of adversity associated with the structural changes from a primarily agricultural, to an industrial economy can be detected. As this book demonstrates, the onset of modern economic growth impinged upon the health and biological well-being of the men and women experiencing that rapid structural transformation. Using detailed statistical analysis of Civil War enlistment records, this book examines the relationship between economic change and changes in the biological standard of living. It argues that industrialization had hidden costs - even in the United States with its abundant resources. Population growth, urbanization and market integration all seem to have had a deleterious effect on the biological well-being of the population, which can be measured in biological statistics. Appealing to a wide circle of scholars, including historians, anthropologists and economists, this book introduces a new conceptualization of the standard of living, and explores social differences in welfare during the period considered. It shows that expansion of the market can be a two-edged sword in that it can increase incomes but simultaneously have an adverse effect on the health and nutritional status of the children living through those times. This conclusion is reached through close analysis of an extensive new data set obtained meticulously from the United States National Archive.'Well-written, tightly reasoned, and carefully crafted, it represents a valuable contribution to both the anthropometric literature and the historiography of the antebellum United States.' Wto Accession and Socio-Economic Development in China BERTRAMS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book reviews how China's accession to the WTO has impacted upon its education, environment, economic and social outcomes in recent years. It has been argued that China's rapid growth in output and exports and subsequent accession to WTO has significantly increased income and therefore the well-being of the Chinese population. However, doubts are now being raised that higher income is generated at the cost of deteriorating environmental and social standards which has increasingly affected the health of the Chinese people, especially those who live in major industrial cities. Also, there is a widespread perception that its accession to WTO has significantly increased social shocks, especially among the farming community, and contributed to poor health outcomes among the rural population. These issues are critically analysed in this book by experienced academics from China and Australia. * Includes contributions from Australian and Chinese scholars and thus, brings together ideas and suggestions from a broad range of perspectives* Analyses China's socio-economic challenges from a multi-dimensional focus* A very useful reference in WTO issues in general and China in particular

Foreign Aid, War, and Economic Development Cambridge University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Foreign Aid, War, and Economic Development traces the economic history of South Vietnam from 1955 to 1975. During this period encompassing the Vietnam war, high-level officials paid relatively little attention to the economy of South Vietnam even though economic development was a necessary condition for the country's survival. A generous foreign aid program was designed to pay local troops and improve the standard of living of the population. Professor Dacy documents this growth in national income and the progress or lack thereof in a number of development indicators. He discusses the goals of United States economic aid and measures the net resources transferred. Additionally, the book analyzes wartime inflation and the Vietnamese tax system, and in so doing shows that the measures which would have promoted long-run viability were shunned in favor of short-run expediencies that practically doomed the country in the long run. Finally, economic development in South Vietnam is compared to that in Israel, South Korea, and Taiwan, three nations that faced high military threats during the same period.

In this book, Yi Feng combines political and economic analyses to study the effects of political institutions on economic performance. Traditionally, political scientists disregard details of economic conditions, while economists may not take into consideration a systematic explanation of political regimes. The growing interest in the interplay of political and economic systems, spurred by the political democratization and economic liberalization evident in many countries over the last twenty years, merits this new perspective. The book examines the political determinants of economic growth, and, specifically, the controversial question of the relationship between democracy and quality of life. Feng systematically studies three variables of a political system -- political freedom, political stability, and policy certainty -- and relates them to economic development. He examines the political factors that may affect patterns of growth directly or indirectly. Combining theory and country-specific case studies, Democracy, Governance, and Economic Performance demonstrates that political institutions and conditions do matter in economic growth. After establishing a theoretical foundation, Feng tests it by examining the direct effects of the three key political variables on economic growth and the indirect effects of democracy in terms of other variables (political instability, inflation, investment, education, income distribution, property rights, and population growth). He concludes by considering the policy implications of these results. Yi Feng is the Luther Lee Chair in Government at Claremont Graduate University, where he also works as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs."For some time we have known that economic growth helps promote democracy. Now, in this important book, Yi Feng shows us that democracy is good for economic growth, and, in the process, demonstrates why the spread of democratic market capitalism is good for the world." --Robert Art, Christian A. Herter Professor of International Relations, Politics Department, Brandeis University, author of A Grand Strategy for America "In Democracy, Governance, and Economic Performance, Yi Feng addresses the impact of institutions, the costs of instability, and the economic role of political freedom on economic growth. He traces the direct and indirect impact of politics on economic performance and seeks to measure both. In so doing, Feng tackles issues that lie at the frontier of the study of growth and the field of development. This work helps to consolidate recent work in these fields and marks a significant contribution to both." --Robert H. Bates, Department of Government, Harvard University "In this impressive book, Professor Feng considers the problem of how a society's particular political arrangements affect the choices made by individuals and, hence, condition the society's economic growth and social development. The work is notable for its broad scope, its thorough grounding in empirical evidence, and for the insights it offers into complex social processes. This is interdisciplinary research at its best." --Eirik G. Furubotn, Private Enterprise Research Center, Texas A&M University, and University of the Saarland, Germany

Opis - Poland and Ukraine have a centuries-long history of neighbourly relations. There have been various periods in the long coexistence of the two nations, sometimes good and sometimes painful - besides conflicts that are difficult to forget there are many examples of creative cooperation and joint Polish-Ukrainian achievements. The collapse of the communist system and changes on the political map of this part of the world have created new conditions and new opportunities for the development of relations between Poland and Ukraine. Apart from intensifying economic cooperation, commercial exchange and movement of population (not only in the border region), there is a growing scientific and cultural cooperation. Poland's membership in the European Union and NATO on the one hand, and Ukraine's striving for strengthening the ties with the Western world on the other hand make fostering the partnership relations even more important for achievement of convergent strategic political goals serving the best interests of both nations. During the past two decades, starting from the political breakthrough in the early 1990s, both countries have gone a long way towards reinstatement of democracy, self-government and market mechanisms, and recreation of contacts with the world. Today, Poland anci Ukraine arc dtffeTent countries than twenty years ago. Still, much effort is needed from both nations to completely eliminate the economic and social backwardness caused by five decades of 'real socialism', 'socialist democracy' and 'centrally planned economy'. Among major issues that need to be addressed are those relating to spatial development and sustainable socio-economic relations. Large cities are places where concentration of social and economic problems is greatest; at the same time big cities are natural 'growth poles'. Socio-Economic Conditions of Agricultural Labours in India LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

One of the most distinguishing features of the rural economy of India has been the growth in the number of agricultural workers, cultivators and agricultural labourers engaged in crop production. The phenomena of underemployment, under-development and surplus population are simultaneously manifested in the daily lives and living of the agricultural labourers. They usually get low wages, conditions of work put an excessive burden on them, and the employment which they get is extremely irregular. Agricultural workers constitute the most neglected class in Indian rural structure. Their income is low and employment irregular. Since, they possess no skill or training, they have no alternative employment opportunities either. Socially, a large number of agricultural workers belong to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. Therefore, they are a uppressed class. They are not organized and they cannot fight for their rights. Because of all these reasons their economic lot has failed to improve. Therefore this book is tried to trace out the lot of problems related to agricultural labourers in the rural community.
