Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... The earliest known prison memoir by an African American writer-recently discovered and authenticated by a team of Yale scholars-sheds light on the longstanding connection between race and incarceration in America.§§"Remarkable . . . triumphantly defiant . . . The book's greatest value lies in the gap it fills: As writer and historian Edward Ball notes, 'the mosaic that is the history of the common man has many missing tiles, and [Austin] Reed's book places an important piece into that mosaic.' "- O: The Oprah Magazine §§In 2009, scholars at Yale University came across a startling manuscript: the memoir of Austin Reed, a free black man born in the 1820s who spent most of his early life ricocheting between forced labor in prison and forced labor as an indentured servant. Lost for more than one hundred and fifty years, the handwritten document is the first known prison memoir written by an African American. Corroborated by prison records and other documentary sources, Reed's text gives a gripping first-person account of an antebellum Northern life lived outside slavery that nonetheless bore, in its day-to-day details, unsettling resemblances to that very institution.§§Now, for the first time, we can hear Austin Reed's story as he meant to tell it. He was born to a middle-class black family in the boomtown of Rochester, New York, but when his father died, his mother struggled to make ends meet. Still a child, Reed was placed as an indentured servant to a nearby family of white farmers near Rochester. He was caught attempting to set fire to a building and sentenced to ten years at Manhattan's brutal House of Refuge, an early juvenile reformatory that would soon become known for beatings and forced labor.§§Seven years later, Reed found himself at New York's infamous Auburn State Prison. It was there that he finished writing this memoir, which explores America's first reformatory and first industrial prison from an inmate's point of view, recalling the great cruelties and kindnesses he experienced in those places and excavating patterns of racial segregation, exploitation, and bondage that extended beyond the boundaries of the slaveholding South, into free New York.§§Accompanied by fascinating historical documents (including a series of poignant letters written by Reed near the end of his life), The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict is a work of uncommon beauty that tells a story of nineteenth-century racism, violence, labor, and captivity in a proud, defiant voice. Reed's memoir illuminates his own life and times-as well as ours today.§§Praise for The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict §§"This extraordinary first-person account, from New York's House of Refuge to the Auburn State Prison, exposes the roots of a prison culture that continues to haunt far too many black families today. We owe a great debt to Austin Reed for writing it and to Caleb Smith for unraveling the mysteries of identity and authentication after its discovery a century-and-a-half later." -Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, Harvard University§§"The voice of Austin Reed, a black man in early nineteenth-century America who was incarcerated at the tender age of ten, rises up and speaks to us now, in artful, picaresque tones, to tell of his own unbelievable suffering. He's a riveting figure." -Rachel Kushner, author of The Flamethrowers§§"Candid and stirring . . . highly recommended to anyone interested in African American history or the history of crime and punishment in the United States." - Library Journal (starred review)

Sheila Barton's memoir of autism is inspiring. Finding herself, at thirty years old, with a son with autism and severe learning disabilities, she set about learning how to live a different kind of life and be a different kind of mother. This is the story, told with passion, intelligence and humour, of their journey from darkness into light. It is written out of anguish and anger, but also out of hope and love. The book opens and closes with a real-life snapshot: the first from when Jonathan was nine, the second from when he was twenty-three. The first is told from the edge of despair. The second is upbeat - the day is one of happiness for Jonny and for his mother. Autism has been integrated into their world - they have survived it. The chapters in between tell the amazing story of their life together and how they dealt with diagnosis, birth, school, brothers and sisters, travel, therapies, obsessions, grief and sex. Sheila writes movingly of the heartbreak and the joy, the terror and the liberation. Her son is now in his late twenties and she and Jonny began their journey into this strange and difficult world when understanding of autism was very poor. Today, autism is diagnosed more often and attracts more media attention than ever before. This is the story of the triumph of hope and love over pain and sadness. It is a compelling manifesto for greater understanding of those who are born 'different'. Its ending is one of empowerment and joy. 'This is a book we all should read. A remarkable human story, a remarkable piece of writing.' - Jon Snow, journalist and broadcaster 'I loved this book. Vivid and lively writing draws a picture of the ups and downs of family life with a child with autism. The overwhelming love she feels for her children and her spirited responses to setbacks are a joy.' - Clare Coombe-Tennant, trustee of TreeHouse

LANDSCAPES OF THE METROPOLIS OF DEATH Kulka Otto Dov Allen Lane

Otto Dov Kulka's Landscapes of the Metropolis of Death, translated by Ralph Mandel, is a memoir of astounding literary and emotional power, exploring the permanent and indelible marks left by the Holocaust and a childhood spent in Auschwitz. As a child the distinguished historian Otto Dov Kulka was sent first to the ghetto of Theresienstadt and then to Auschwitz. As one of the few survivors he has spent much of his life studying Nazism and the Holocaust, but always as a discipline requiring the greatest dispassion and objectivity, with his personal story set to one side. He has nevertheless remained haunted by specific memories and images, thoughts he has been unable to shake off. The extraordinary result of this is Landscapes of the Metropolis of Death - a unique and powerful experiment in how one man has tried to understand his past (and our history). Reviews: "This is one of the most remarkable testimonies to inhumanity that I know. The deeply moving recollections of Dov Kulka's boyhood years in Auschwitz, interwoven with reflections of elegiac, poetic quality, vividly convey the horror of the death-camp, the trauma of family and friends, and the indelible imprint left on the memory of a young boy who became a distinguished historian of the Holocaust. An extraordinarily important work which needs to be read". (Sir Ian Kershaw). "Astonishing...[Landscapes] is, quite simply, extraordinary ...a sort of Modernist precipitate of a historical work, something strange and powerful formed from, but separate to, the solution of history...I can't see how this book could be bettered". (Robert Eaglestone, Times Higher Education). "Almost unclassifiable...Nothing else I have read comes close to this profound examination of what the Holocaust means...[Kulka's] journey strikes me as a quest similar to the attempt to describe the face of God or the structure of the universe. They are too vast and too mysterious. Not that this stops us, or this author, from trying". (Linda Grant, New Statesman). "Primo Levi's testimony, it is often said, is that of a chemist: clear, cool, precise, distant. So with Kulka's work: this is the product of a master historian - ironic, probing, present in the past, able to connect the particular with the cosmic. His memory is in the service of deep historical understanding, rendered in evocative prose that is here eloquently translated from Hebrew". (Thomas Laqueur, Guardian). "Beautiful, startling...This is a great book: read it. And be grateful - its publication is, in every possible sense, a miracle...This is not history, it is something else". (Bryan Appleyard, Sunday Times). "Kulka's reflections have an unsettling rawness ...yet even in Auschwitz, there are moments of protest, black humour and beauty...This is a grave, poetic and horrifying account of the Holocaust which does not so much revisit the Auschwitz of the past, but the Auschwitz of Kulka's inner world". (Arifa Akbar, Independent). "Unlike any other first-hand account written about the camps...[Kulka] has done the rest of us - and the world - so great a kindness by writing his book ...offering the barest glint of sunlight amid a thunderous darkness". (Simon Schama, Financial Times). About the author: Otto Dov Kulka was born in Czechoslovakia in 1933. He is Professor Emeritus at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Speckled People METHUEN DRAMA

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Adapted for the stage from the best-selling memoir, The Speckled People tells a profoundly moving story of a young boy trapped in a language war. Set in 1950s Ireland, this is a gripping, poignant, and at times very funny family drama of homesickness, control and identity. As a young boy, Hugo Hamilton struggles with what it means to be speckled, "half and half...Irish on top and German below." An idealistic Irish father enforces his cultural crusade by forbidding his son to speak English while his German mother tries to rescue him with her warm-hearted humour and uplifting industry. The boy must free himself from his father and from bullies on the street who persecute him with taunts of Nazism. Above all he must free himself from history and from the terrible secrets of his mother and father before he can find a place where he belongs. Surrounded by fear, guilt, and frequently comic cultural entanglements, Hugo tries to understand the differences between Irish history and German history and to turn the strange logic of what he is told into truth. It is a journey that ends in liberation but not before the long-buried secrets at the back of the parents' wardrobe have been laid bare.

From award-winning actress Illeana Douglas comes a memoir about learning to survive in Hollywood while staying true to her quirky vision of the world. In 1969 Illeana Douglas' parents saw the film "Easy Rider "and were transformed. Taking Dennis Hopper's words, "That's what it's all about man" to heart, they abandoned their comfortable upper middle class life and gave Illeana a childhood filled with hippies, goats, free spirits, and free love. Illeana writes, "Since it was all out of my control, I began to think of my life as a movie, with a Dennis Hopper-like father at the center of it." "I Blame Dennis Hopper" is a testament to the power of art and the tenacity of passion. It is a rollicking, funny, at times tender exploration of the way movies can change our lives. With crackling humor and a full heart, Douglas describes how a good Liza Minnelli impression helped her land her first gig and how Rudy Valley taught her the meaning of being a show biz trouper. From her first experience being on set with her grandfather and mentor-two-time Academy Award-winning actor Melvyn Douglas-to the moment she was discovered by Martin Scorsese for her blood-curdling scream and cast in her first film, to starring in movies alongside Robert DeNiro, Nicole Kidman, and Ethan Hawke, to becoming an award winning writer, director and producer in her own right, "I Blame Dennis Hopper" is an irresistible love letter to movies and filmmaking. Writing from the perspective of the ultimate show business fan, Douglas packs each page with hilarious anecdotes, bizarre coincidences, and fateful meetings that seem, well, right out of a plot of a movie. "I Blame Dennis Hopper" is the story of one woman's experience in show business, but it is also a genuine reminder of why we all love the movies: for the glitz, the glamor, the sweat, passion, humor, and escape they offer us all.

This modern classic of nature writing by the author of THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING was an inspiration for and featured in Helen Macdonald's prize-winning H IS FOR HAWK. 'No hawk can be a pet. There is no sentimentality. In a way, it is the psychiatrist's art. One is matching one's mind against another mind with deadly reason and interest. One desires no transference of affection, demands no ignoble homage or gratitude. It is a tonic for the less forthright savagery of the human heart.' First published in 1951, T. H. White's memoir describes with searing honesty his attempt to train a wild goshawk, a notoriously difficult bird to master. With no previous experience and only a few hopelessly out-of-date books on falconry as a guide, he set about trying to bend the will of Gos, the young bird he'd acquired from Germany, to his own. Beset by setback after setback, the solitary and troubled White nonetheless found himself obsessively attached to the animal he hoped would one day set him free.

At the start of World War 2, when Hitler's bombs threatened to rain down hell, eight-year-old David Merron was taken from the heart of his close-knit Jewish community in London's East End and evacuated to the safety of the English countryside. Transplanted into an alien world, adrift from his nurturing family and at the mercy of strangers, life was frightening and lonely. The strangeness of this new existence - its religious and cultural shifts - left David confused and questioning not only his faith but his very sense of self. But, with time, David realised that the rural world was also beautiful. Far from the cramped and often poverty-stricken East End, the countryside was wild and wonderful - an adventure playground in which a curious lad was free to flourish. Immersed in the ebb and flow of country life, David harboured a secret. Increasingly, he didn't want to return to the dirty streets of the East End. Sometimes, he didn't want the war to end. David's moving memoir is about a small boy's burgeoning love of the countryside and the confusion he felt about missing - and yet not missing - home. Set against a wartime backdrop of flaming skies and pluming black smoke, it is a celebration of the wonder and tranquility of the natural world that changed the shape of David's life.

The tumult of great powers colliding has passed and the city of Darujhistan and its citizens can at last get on with what matters: trading, bickering, politicking and enjoying all the good things in life. However, not all are ready to leave the past behind. A treasure hunter, digging amongst the burial grounds that surround the city, is about to uncover a hidden crypt. He will open the last of a series of sealed vaults - the one that no other dared touch - and, in so doing, set free something so terrifying that the knowledge of its internment may have been systematically wiped from all history. Fortune hunters are also at work far to the south. When a fragment of Moon's Spawn, once the home of Anomander Rake, Son of Darkness, crashed into the Rivan Sea it created a chain of small islands. Legends and rumours already surround them. The most potent of these is that here is hidden the Throne of Night, claimed by some to be the seat of Mother Dark herself. Either way, all who seek this ancient artefact - renegade mages, hardened mercenaries, even a Malazan army deserter - believe it will bestow unlimited power upon the eventual possessor. The stakes are high, greed is rife, betrayal inevitable, and murder and chaos lie in wait...

After moving from the U.S. to London after college, Kathy Eldon longed for a more vibrant life. In 1978, her wishes were granted. Kathy moved with her husband and two young children to Kenya - an opportunity that might provide the adventure and life experience she longed for. There, Kathy and her husband set about raising Dan and Amy in a life of safaris and social engagement, in a society that shaped her children to be spiritual and artistic-and where they were free to follow their own truth. At the same time, Eldon dove into this new world as a journalist and writer. Kathy came to international prominence following the death of her son, Dan in 1993. A 23-year old photojournalist for Reuters, Dan was stoned to death by an angry mob in Somalia. Eldon knew that there was no way through her grief unless she could transform it into something positive. In the years since Dan's death, she has embraced the role of philanthropist and activist and has led the charge to preserve his legacy and encourage social change through creative endeavors. Since Dan's death, Kathy has experienced her own spiritual journey, and her memoir captures the enduring connection she has to her slain son. Because Kathy is a journalist, she has a gift for wonderfully capturing this story.

Steve Jobs was a remarkable man who wanted to unify the world through technology. For him, the point was to set people free with tools to explore their own unique creativity. Chrisann Brennan knows this better than anyone. She met him in high school, at a time when Jobs was passionately aware that there was something much bigger to be had out of life, and that new kinds of revelations were within reach. The Bite in the Apple is the very human tale of Jobs's ascent and the toll it took, told from the author's unique perspective as his first girlfriend, co-parent, friend, and--like many others--object of his cruelty. Brennan writes with depth and breadth, and she doesn't buy into all the hype. She talks with passion about an idealistic young man who was driven to change the world, about a young father who denied his own child, and about a man who mistook power for love. Chrisann Brennan's intimate memoir provides the reader with a human dimension to Jobs' myth. Finally, a book that reveals the real Steve Jobs.
