Nauki społeczne, humanistyczne, ekonomiczne > Polityka

The Summer 2012 issue of New Eastern Europe takes a closer look at the political and cultural developments taking place in the region. The theme of this issue, ?New Europe, Old Problems? highlights the fact that even though we are in the 21st century, many of the problems these countries faced over 20 years ago before the collapse of the Soviet Union are still present today. BBC investigative journalist, John Sweeney, reports on his recent trip to eastern Ukraine writing that in Kharkiv, ?People seem to look on the Soviet ways with respect and affection, which is why they haven?t changed the street names that much and the Lenin statue still haunts the city.? Polish expert, Grzegorz Gromadzki analyzes Russia?s power system under Putin in comparison to previous regimes, while British researcher and writer, Kelly Hignett, provides a picture of the Cold War style diplomatic-espionage games that are taking place between the United Kingdom and Russia today. And Yegor Vasylyev puts Viktor Yanukovych under the microscope with his analysis of the Ukrainian president. Belarusian journalist Katerina Barushka tells the story of the 2011 Minsk metro attack and the execution of two young boys who were found guilty in carrying out the attack, while Paweł Kowal, a member of the European Parliament, advocates for a new approach toward Belarus. In addition, Adam Bodnar and Irmina Pacho from the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights in Warsaw provide their perspective on Poland?s participation with the American CIA in the imprisonment of terror suspects on Polish soil. An interview with Timothy Garton Ash convinces us ?that we cannot talk about a new Iron Curtain. The lines are both more fluid and more complex.? while Tad Taube, of the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture advocates for Poland to rediscover its Jewish heritage in 21st century Eastern Europe. Cultural texts look at the life of Bruno Schulz, feminism in Poland, and cross-border arts programmes. Reports from Moscow and Baku wrap up the issue along with reviews of the latest books and films from or about the region.

Hitchcock on Hitchcock, Volume 1 - Selected Writings and Interviews University Press Group Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Gathered here for the first time are Alfred Hitchcock's reflections on his own life and work. In this ample selection of largely unknown and formerly inaccessible interviews and essays, Hitchcock provides an enlivening commentary on a career that spanned decades and transformed the history of the cinema. Bringing the same exuberance and originality to his writing as he did to his films, he ranges from accounts of his own life and experiences to techniques of filmmaking and ideas about cinema in general. Wry, thoughtful, witty, and humorous as well as brilliantly informative this selection reveals another side of the most renowned filmmaker of our time. Sidney Gottlieb not only presents some of Hitchcock's most important pieces, but also places them in their historical context and in the context of Hitchcock's development as a director. He reflects on Hitchcock's complicated, often troubled, and continually evolving relationships with women, both on and off the set. Some of the topics Hitchcock touches upon are the differences between English and American attitudes toward murder, the importance of comedy in film, and the uses and techniques of lighting. There are also many anecdotes of life among the stars, reminiscences from the sets of some of the most successful and innovative films of this century, and incisive insights into working method, film history, and the role of film in society. Unlike some of the complex critical commentary that has emerged on his life and work, the director's own writing style is refreshingly straightforward and accessible. Throughout the collection, Hitchcock reveals a delight and curiosity about his medium that bring all his subjects to life.

Edgar Allan Poe Rowman & Littlefield

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Most frequently regarded as a writer of the supernatural, Poe was actually among the most versatile of American authors, writing social satire, comic hoaxes, mystery stories, science fiction, prose poems, literary criticism and theory, and even a play. As a journalist and editor, Poe was closely in touch with the social, political, and cultural trends of nineteenth-century America. Recent scholarship has linked Poe's imaginative writings to the historical realities of nineteenth-century America, including to science and technology, wars and politics, the cult of death and bereavement, and, most controversially, to slavery and stereotyped attitudes toward women. Edgar Allan Poe: Beyond Gothicism presents a systematic approach to topical criticism of Poe, revealing a new portrait of Poe as an author who blended topics of intellectual and social importance and returned repeatedly to these ideas in different works and using different aesthetic strategies during his brief but highly productive career. Twelve essays point readers toward new ways of considering Poe's themes, techniques, and aesthetic preoccupations by looking at Poe in the context of landscapes, domestic interiors, slavery, prosody, Eastern cultures, optical sciences, Gothicism, and literary competitions, clubs, and reviewing.
