Modernising Traditions and Traditionalising Modernity in Africa. Chieftaincy and Democracy in Cameroon and Botswana Langaa RPCID

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Chieftaincy in Africa has displayed remarkable dynamics and adaptability to new socio-economic and political developments, without becoming totally transformed in the process. Almost everywhere on the continent, chiefdoms and chiefs have become active agents in the quest for ethnic, cultural symbols as a way of maximising opportunities at the centre of bureaucratic and state power, and at the home village where control over land and labour often require both financial and symbolic capital. Chieftaincy remains central to ongoing efforts at developing democracy and accountability in line with the expectations of Africans as individual 'citizens' and also as 'subjects' of various cultural communities. This book uses Cameroon and Botswana as case studies, to argue that the rigidity and prescriptiveness of modernist partial theories have left a major gap in scholarship on chiefs and chieftaincy in Africa. It stresses that studies of domesticated agency in Africa are sorely needed to capture the creative ongoing processes and to avoid overemphasising structures and essentialist perceptions on chieftaincy and the cultural communities that claim and are claimed by it.

Regimes and Democracy in Latin America Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This volume focuses on democracy in Latin America, and both assesses the state of current knowledge on the topic and identifies new research frontiers in the study of Latin American politics. It provides an overview of research agendas and strategies used in the literature over the past four decades. It tackles a series of central questions-What is democracy? Is democracy an absolute value? Are current conceptualizations of democracy adequate? How and why does democracy work or fail in Latin America?-and spells out the implications of answers to these questions for current research agendas. It distinguishes between qualitative and quantitative approaches to the conceptualization and measurement of democracy, and presents a dataset on political regimes and democracy that illustrates how the differences between these two standard approaches might be overcome. Finally, it evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of conventional methods used to generate and test explanations of the causes and consequences of democracy, and proposes alternative ways to advance ongoing substantive debates given the current state of theory and data. The contributors are scholars from the United States and Latin America who are experts on Latin America, and who have established reputations as theorists and methodologists. The volume will be of interest to readers seeking to understand debates about democracy in developing societies and to grasp the concepts, theories and methods that are currently being developed to study Latin American politics. Oxford Studies in Democratization is a series for scholars and students of comparative politics and related disciplines. Volumes concentrate on the comparative study of the democratization process that accompanied the decline and termination of the cold war. The geographical focus of the series is primarily Latin America, the Caribbean, Southern and Eastern Europe, and relevant experiences in Africa and Asia. The series editor is Laurence Whitehead, Official Fellow, Nuffield College, University of Oxford.

Democracy and International Relations PALGRAVE MACMILLAN

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Democracy and International Relations is the first study of the relevance and applicability of international relations theory to the explanation of the contemporary global push for liberal democracy by the major western powers and international organizations - including the UN, the EU and the international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF. Contributors are leading international relations theorists who draw from current international relations theory, democratic theory, discourse ethics, cultural anthropology and development studies traditions to argue that contemporary international relations theories fail in their understanding of these important global trends; the contributors suggest ways forward so as to provide a fruitful and dynamic research programme for the future. In addition, because they are also eminent experts in specific geographical areas, the book provides state-of-the-art commentaries on what the push for liberal democracy means for those at the receiving end of global democratization policies - in Asia, Latin and Central America, southern Africa, Russia and the Middle East.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... First Lessons in United States History (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from First Lessons in United States History 1. The Ice Ages. - North America is a very old continent; it may be older than Europe or Africa, or even Asia. Thousands of years ago a great ice sheet came down over the land from the Arctic regions and spread southward as far as Southern New England, New Jersey, and Ohio. After a time it slowly retreated to the North again. Along its southern edge the ice sheet piled up steep rounded hills of gravel and large rounded rocks or bowlders. All this happened a very long time ago. Indeed, it may have happened more than once, as there are two distinct sets of these remains of the Ice Ages.
