Part of the genius of the Gospel of John comes from how the author infuses the gospel message into every part of the Gospel. In The Gospel of John: A Thematic Approach, Jackson Painter investigates John's literary-theological strategy by identifying seven key themes and showing the reader how to detect them in any portion of the Gospel as well as how to see the themes interacting with one another to create John's distinct theological message about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The author gives numerous examples of the elements and motifs that comprise the themes and presents three studies that illustrate how the themes interact. Students of the Gospel of John will come away with a newfound ability to understand and interpret the Gospel of John.

Excerpt from Essays on Happiness, Christian Piety, Prejudices Against the Gospel, and the Scripture Doctrine of Grace: To Which Is Added the Celebrated Sermon on Glorying in the Cross of Christ The Rev. John M'Laurin, one of the brightest ornaments of the Christian name, was born in October, 1693, at Glenderule, in Argyleshire, of which parish his father was minister. He had two brothers, one of whom, Daniel, died young; and the other, Colin, is well known as one of the ablest mathematicians of the age. Losing their parents at an early period, they were taken under the care of an uncle, Mr. Daniel M'Laurin, minister of Kilsinnan, who sent them to the university of Glasgow, where they pursued their studies with great effect; after which, John was sent to finish his education at Leyden, under professor Wesselius. In 1717, he was licensed to preach, by the presbytery of Dumbarton; and in 1719, ordained minister of Luss, a country parish situated on the banks of Loch Lomond, about twenty miles northwest of Glasgow. He was not allowed, however, to continue long in so obscure a station. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Biographical and Literary Studies (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Biographical and Literary Studies Custom has made it seem fitting, when an author publishes a book, that he should give in a "foreword" something like an apology for his action, lest he be charged with presumption for inviting public attention to his work. Has his book une raison d'etre? That depends on the general interest and value of the topics presented and whether the author has shown intelligence and literary skill in his treatment of them. St. Augustine rewards every new study of his life and character. A kind of fascination invests his name on account of his parentage, the striking incidents of his life, his interesting personality, his Christian virtues, his great genius, his enduring influence through his powerful writings. His writings moulded and confirmed the religious faith of Christendom through all the Dark Ages. Like the far-reaching flash-light of a steamer groping its way along a tortuous and perilous river, those writings illumined the darkness of the long medićval night and gave spiritual assurance and stability to the Church of God in its defense of the Gospel of Christ. John Knox, the Scottish reformer, the subject of the next and longest essay, inspires an interest that is quite dissimilar to that felt for St. Augustine. Following his seminal analysis of Luke, Jesus, Politics and Society: A Study of Luke's Gospel, Richard J. Cassidy explicates the startling social and political contents of the Acts of the Apostles. Treating themes of fundamental importance to the life of the church today, Society and Politics in the Acts of the Apostles will be required reading for any serious student of the New Testament. ""Of special interest is the discussion of Paul's relation to the Roman Empire . . . There was an element in [Paul's] preaching and activity that did present a threat to Roman society."" --F. F. Bruce, Emeritus Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis, University of Manchester ""Father Cassidy offers a masterly analysis of Acts in beautifully intelligible language. It culminates in the refusal to accept either of two popular characterizations of the book."" --David Daube, Emeritus Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley ""This work completes with distinction the previous work of Cassidy on Luke . . . [It] should receive the attention of both interpreters of Acts and historians of Christianity's origins."" --Jacques Dupont, OSB, Monastere Saint-Andre, Ottignies, Belgium ""Its comprehensive survey of the data and its judicious assessment of scholarly opinion make this a timely contribution to one of the burning issues of Lukan research."" --John H. Elliott, Professor of Theology and Religious Studies, University of San Francisco ""This well-written book exemplifies interdisciplinary scholarship and represents a provocative challenge for those who seek to understand the message and the implications of Christianity today."" --Mary Ann Getty, RSM., Assistant Professor of New Testament, Catholic University of America ""Adds a new dimension to the purpose of Acts by suggesting that Luke wanted to show Christians how to live in the Roman Empire and specifically to give them examples of how to cope with being tried before political officials."" --I. Howard Marshall, Professor of New Testament Exegesis, University of Aberdeen ""'A challenging work in which Cassidy presents the Church in Acts as 'a community committed to an uncompromising testimony to Christ.'"" --Joseph Patbrapankal, Professor of New Testament, Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bangalore, India Richard J. Cassidy serves as Professor of Sacred Scripture at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Michigan. His most recent books are Paul in Chains: Roman Imprisonment and the Letters of Paul and Four Times Peter: Portrayals of Peter in the Four Gospels and at Philippi. He is currently completing a commentary on St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians.
