The teaching of complementary medicine in Swiss medical schools Südwestdeutscher Verlag für Hochschulschriften
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The recent rapid increase in the demand for, and§application of, complementary and alternative§medicine (CAM) across the Western world necessitates§adequate medical education. The Bologna declaration§has put in motion a series of reforms which will§require academic efforts in Switzerland to reach a§better integration of CAM into medical education. The§present study aimed to (1) survey current education§of CAM in the five Swiss medical schools, (2)§investigate expert opinions from both conventional§and CAM fields about the integration of CAM education§into the medical curriculum, and (3) document Swiss§medical students attitude toward and knowledge of§CAM and their experience of CAM education at medical§school. The results of the study lead to the§conclusion that CAM education should become part of§the undergraduate curriculum at each Swiss medical§school. Acupuncture/TCM, phytotherapy, and§homeopathy are the most requested CAM disciplines to§be included in the curriculum. These courses should§occur during the clinical years, be in the form of§seminars, faculty lectures and patient presentations§and be rewarded by credits.

During the past several years there has been a shortage of flight opportunities for biological and medical projects. And those that were available usually had severe restrictions on instrumentation, number of subjects, duration, time allotted for performing the experiments, a possibility for repetition of experiments. It is our hope and expectation that this will change once the international Space Station is in full operation. The advantages of a permanent space station, already demonstrated by the Russian Mir station, are continuous availability of expert crew and a wide range of equipment, possibility of long-term experiments where this is waranted, increased numbers of subjects through larger laboratory space, proper controls in the large 1-G centrifuge, easier repeatability of experiments when needed. The limited number of flight opportunities during recent years probably explains why it has taken so long to acquire a sufficient number of high quality contributions for this seventh volume of "Advances in Space Biology and Medicine". While initially the series was sailed at annually appearing volumes, we are now down to a biannual appearance. Hopefully, it will be possible to return to annual volumes in the future when results from space station experimentation at begin to pour in. The first three chapters of this volume deal with muscle. Fejtek and Wassersug provide a survey of all studies on muscle of rodents flown in space, and include an interesting demography of this aspect of space research. Riley reviews our current knowledge of the effects of long-term spaceflight and re-entry on skeletal muscle, and considers the questions still to be answered before we can be satisfied that long-term space missions, such as on the space station, can be safely undertaken. Stein reviews our understanding of the nutritional and hormonal aspects of muscle loss in spaceflight, and concludes that the protein loss in space could be deleterious to health during flight and after return. Strollo summarizes our understanding of the major endocrine systems on the ground, then considers what we know about their functioning in space, concluding that there is much to be learned about the changes taking place during spaceflight. The many problems of providing life support (oxygen regeneration and food supply) during extended stay on the Moon, on Mars, or in space by means of plant cultivation are discussed by Salisbury. The challenges of utilizing electrophoresis in microgravity for the separation of cells and proteins are illustrated and explained by Bauer and colleagues. Finally, the chapter on teaching of space life sciences by Schmitt shows that this field of science has come of age, but also that its multidisciplinary character poses interesting challenges to teaching it.

Functional Inflammology International College of Human Nutrition and...
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
In 2016, this book has been updated and expanded as "Textbook of Clinical Nutrition and Functional Medicine, vol. 1: Essential Knowledge for Safe Action and Effective Treatment" (ISBN: 9780990620457); volumes 1 and 2 are published together in "Inflammation Mastery, 4th Edition) (ISBN: 0990620484). Functional Inflammology: Volume 1 is the culmination of several thousand research publications combined with Dr Vasquez's many years of clinical experience and teaching graduate-level students and doctorate-level clinicians worldwide. With radiographs, photos, acronyms, illustrations, flowcharts, and detailed-yet-simplifying explanations, Dr Vasquez makes it easier than ever for clinicians to grasp important concepts in integrative care and functional medicine and then to translate the basic science research and molecular biology into treatment plans that can be explained and used in "the real world" of clinical practice with patients. The associated video tutorials and recorded live conference presentations further help students and clinicians "get it" via Dr Vasquez's effective teaching style which embraces complexity while always emphasizing clinical applicability and psychosocial context. The Inflammation Mastery & Functional Inflammology series of books and videos translates important concepts and nutritional/biomedical science into easy and practical clinical applications for the prevention and treatment of disorders of sustained inflammation, which Dr Vasquez describes as "patterns of metabolic disturbance and inflammatory dysfunction" existing in three sequential and overlapping categories: 1) metabolic inflammation, 2) allergic inflammation, 3) autoimmune inflammation. This book includes access to video presentations which introduce the origin and components of the Functional Inflammology Protocol and FINDSEX
Atlas of Clinical Positron Tomography Arnold Publishers / Hodder Arnold H&S
Medycyna > English Division
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a rapidly developing subspecialty of nuclear medicine which, in a very short space of time, has been shown to have a significant impact on patient management. This comprehensive clinical atlas arises out of the combined experience from two PET centres during the formative years of clinical application. It is presented as a series of rapidly assimilated "mini-lectures", illustrated by real-life case studies, clear concise teaching points and directions for further reading. In each section the authors have identified the key management issues in which clinical PET imaging can be used to good effect, selecting PET images to illustrate each important application, especially in the field of oncology, but also in cardiology, neurology and psychiatry. They offer relevant clinical information on epidemiology, pathology and (in the case of cancer) staging methods in the chapter introductions and, for each area of application, tabulated summaries of current clinical indications for PET scans and suggested algorithms. This book should be of interest to specialists and trainees in nuclear medicine, radiologists and oncologists. 'The strength of this textbook is the spirit of collaboration between nuclear medicine physicians, who are interested and daily involved mostly in the diagnosis of cancer based on positron emission tomography (PET)...the references are carefully selected and up to date.European RadiologyA most welcome, definitive work and should find its place on the bookshelf of most hospitals undertaking or wishing to undertake PET scanning. It is also a source of reference for radiologists who wish to refer patients for further staging of disease.RAD MagazineRecommended as a teaching file for students, for nuclear physicians in training and for those clinicians who want to know what PET is.European Journal of Nuclear Medicine
This atlas is based on case studies gleaned from a 20 year experience in a large thromboembolism program. These real cases are summarized in a standardized fashion, presenting the clinical presentation, investigations, treatment, outcome and a summary paragraph indicating the significant teaching points. The cases were selected to illustrate different presentations of venous thromboembolism (primarily pulmonary embolism) to correlate the clinical presentation with the various investigations, and to present visual material which highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the various investigative approaches. The chapters were compiled by an international panel of experts, providing the reader with concise, up-to-date reviews of the various topics. This book is presented in an atlas format, in order to enhance the quality of the reproductions. For ease of reading, the case summaries are presented on the left hand page, with the illustrations beginning on the opposite page with the chest x-ray, followed by lung scan, pulmonary angiography and venograms where they apply. To assist with the interpretation of lung scans, the editors provide a copy of a lung map which is particularly useful in identifying subsegmental or segmental defects and has been shown to significantly decrease interobserver variability. Venous thromboembolism is a multidisciplinary field, thus this book will be of interest to a wide variety of practitioners, including primary care physicians, specialists in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, cardiology, hematology, intensive care, as well as a number of surgical specialties, including orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery and general surgery. This book is a comprehensive review of venous thromboembolism written by experts in the field. All recommendations for treatment or for diagnostic tests are supported by critical appraisal using evidence-based medicine. Each chapter is to be followed by a brief summary of the level of evidence for recommendations so that the reader can immediately separate out recommendations that are based on firm scientific grounds as opposed to those that are supported by weak evidence such as cohort studies with historic controls or case studies. The book will include a series of case studies that are the result of 20 years of experience with problems in venous thromboembolism. Each case will be accompanied by reproductions of the actual diagnostic tests and will include clinical outcomes and editorial comments regarding the clinical validity of diagnostic tests

The case history approach has an impressive record of success in a variety of disciplines. Collections of case histories, casebooks, are now widely used in all sorts of specialties other than in their familiar appli cation to law and medicine. The case method had its formal beginning at Harvard in 1871 when Christopher Lagdell developed it as a means of teaching. It was so successful in teaching law that it was soon adopted in medical education, and the collection of cases provided the raw material for research on various diseases. Subsequently, the case history approach spread to such varied fields as business, psychology, management, and economics, and there are over 100 books in print that use this approach. The idea for a series of Casehooks in Earth Science grew from my experience in organizing and editing a collection of examples of one variety of sedimentary deposits. The prqject began as an effort to bring some order to a large number of descriptions of these deposits that were so varied in presentation and terminology that even specialists found them difficult to compare and analyze. Thus, from the beginning, it was evident that something more than a simple collection of papers was needed. Accordingly, the nearly fifty contributors worked together with George de Vries Klein and me to establish a standard format for presenting the case histories.
