Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... It could have been the biggest military disaster suffered by the British in the Second World War, but against all odds the British Army was successfully evacuated, and 'Dunkirk spirit' became synonymous with the strength of the British people in adversity. On the same day that Winston Churchill became Prime Minister, Nazi troops invaded Holland, Luxembourg and Belgium. The eight-month period of calm that had existed since the declaration of war was over. But the defences constructed by the Allies in preparation failed to repel a German army with superior tactics. The British Expeditionary Force soon found themselves in an increasingly chaotic retreat. By the end of May 1940, over 400,000 Allied troops were trapped in and around the port of Dunkirk without shelter or supplies. Hitler's army was just ten miles away. On 26 May, the British Admiralty launched Operation Dynamo. This famous rescue mission sent every available vessel - from navy destroyers and troopships to pleasure cruisers and fishing boats - over the Channel to Dunkirk. Of the 850 'Little Ships' that sailed to Dunkirk, 235 were sunk by German aircraft or mines, but over this nine day period 338,000 British and French troops were safely evacuated. Drawing on the wealth of material from the Imperial War Museum Sound Archive, Forgotten Voices of Dunkirk presents in the words of both rescued and rescuers in an intimate and dramatic account of what Winston Churchill described as a 'miracle of deliverance'.

German Trade and the War, Commercial and Industrial Conditions, in War Time and the Future Outlook (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from German Trade and the War, Commercial and Industrial Conditions, in War Time and the Future Outlook Sir: There is submitted herewith a report on German trade and the war, by Chauncey Depew Snowv Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, and J. J. Krai, of the research division of the Bureau. This report takes up the question of the foreign trade of Germany where " German Foreign-Trade Organization," Miscellaneous Series No. 57, issued in 1917, left off. It discusses industrial and commercial conditions in Germany since the outbreak of the war, covering the manufacturing industries, the supplies of raw materials, the development of substitute materials, labor, combination and syndication of industry, and present markets. It contains some information concerning transportation conditions, the railroads, rivers and canals, and ocean shipping. This report also touches briefly on some of the broader subjects of Germany's commercial aims in going to war, and aspirations and preparations for the period after the war. Whereas in the previous report, "German Foreign-Trade Organization," detailed statistical and other information was given concerning the export trade, in the present report special attention is devoted to the subject of raw materials and the import trade. There are many topics here touched on which suggest the possibilities of future detailed treatment and very extensive research; for example, such topics as the effect of the war on the merchant shipping of Germany, and the extent of the loss to the German export trade by liquidation of German concerns in foreign countries. The facilities for such research and detailed treatment are not now available. It is realized that some of the topics discussed are treated m a fragmentary fashion, and that the discussion of some topics, such as plans and preparations for the future, are little more than a reproduction of the published views of some of the German economists and other men in public life. No apology is needed for the presentation of the material in its present form. Mr. Snow and Mr. Krai have followed such important newspapers, periodicals, and books published in Germany and all the other European countries as have been available in the Department. War Verse (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from War Verse This is by no means the first collection of poems of the great war; and it is certain that it will not be the last. If it has one outstanding characteristic which distinguishes it from other collections, it is that the material for it is not the result of a quest among volumes of verse, and only to a slight degree is it the work of the recognized poets. It owes its origin to the fact that the Editor has been a close reader of the English journals, magazines and reviews since August, 1914, and has been increasingly impressed with the fine quality of the war verse contributed by writers unknown or little known. The spirit rather than the form of this verse carries its appeal to the reader. It is not the work of professional verse writers who have seen in the events of the war stirring and timely literary material; but, to a large extent, it is the spontaneous expression of sincere feeling, - the feeling of the soldier in the trenches, waiting for the order to go "over the top" the next morning, and thinking of home, of England, of Oxford, or of the crocuses of Nottingham, or the feeling of the wounded man in the hospital or of the nurse who cares for him. In not a few instances, the poems, when printed, have borne, under the name of the writer, the inscription "Killed in action," which has given the lines the peculiar poignancy of a message from a man who has fought his last fight, and has done it without fear or faltering. Some Gains of the War Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Some Gains of the War: An Address to the Royal Colonial Institute, Delivered February 13, 1918 Our losses in this War continue to be enormous, and we are not yet near to the end. So it may seem absurd to speak of our gains, of gains that we have already achieved. But if you will look at the thing in a large light, I think you will see that it is not absurd. I do not speak of gains of territory, and prisoners, and booty. It is true that we have taken from the Germans about a million square miles of land in Africa, where land is cheap. We have taken more prisoners from them than they have taken from us, and we have whole parks of German artillery to set over against the battered and broken remnants of British field-guns which were exhibited in Berlin - a monument to the immortal valour of the little old Army. I am speaking rather of gains which cannot be counted as guns are counted, or measured as land is measured, but which are none the less real and important. The Germans have achieved certain great material gains in this War, and they are fighting now to hold them. If they fail to hold them, the Germany of the war-lords is ruined. She will have to give up all her bloated ambitions, to purge and live cleanly, and painfully to reconstruct her prosperity on a quieter and sounder basis. She will not do this until she is forced to it by defeat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from A Particular History of the Five Years French and Indian War in New England and Parts Adjacent: From Its Declaration by the King of France, March 15, 1744, to the Treaty With the Eastern Indians, Oct; 16, 1749, Sometimes Called Governor Shirley's War; With a Memoir of Major-General Shirley, Accompanied by His Portrait and Other Engravings Previous to the separation of New from Old England, what were since "The Provinces," that part of the continent (from the mouth of the St. Lawrence to the Penobscot) was more valued than almost any other part of North America. It was thought, both here and in England, that Nova Scotia and the circumjacent lands and seas could not be over estimated. But after the separation, New England took but little interest in that part of the world, as it was possessed by bitter political enemies, exiled there because they had espoused and adhered to the cause of the British government. Consequently the intercourse between the sections at once nearly ceased. Hence our writers make small account of the history of the Provinces after their separation. People's History Of The Civil War The New Press

The acclaimed sweeping history of a nation at war with itself, told here for the first time by the people who lived it. Bottom-up history at its very best, "A People's History of the Civil War" "does for the Civil War period what Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" did for the study of American history in general" ("Library Journal"). Widely praised upon its initial release, it was described as "meticulously researched and persuasively argued" by the "Atlanta Journal-Constitution." Historian David Williams has written the first account of the American Civil War though the eyes of ordinary people--foot soldiers, slaves, women, prisoners of war, draft resisters, Native Americans, and others. Richly illustrated with little-known anecdotes and first-hand testimony, this pathbreaking narrative moves beyond presidents and generals to tell a new and powerful story about America's most destructive conflict. "A People's History of the Civil War" is "readable social history" which "sheds fascinating light" ("Publishers Weekly") on this crucial period. In so doing it recovers the long-overlooked perspectives and forgotten voices of one of the defining chapters of American history. Forty b/w images.

With an introduction by Kate Mosse All grown-ups were children once (but most of them have forgotten). A pilot who has crash landed in the desert awakes to see an extraordinary little boy. 'Please,' asks the stranger, 'will you draw me a little lamb!' Baffled by the little prince's incessant questioning, the pilot pulls out his pencil, and starts to draw. As the little prince's curiosity takes them further on their journey together, the pilot is able to piece together an understanding of the tiny planet from which the prince has come and of his incredible travels across the universe. First published in 1943, The Little Prince has been translated into more than 250 languages, becoming a global phenomenon. Heart-breaking, funny and thought-provoking, it is an enchanting and endlessly wise fable about the human condition and the power of imagination. A book about both childhood and adulthood, it can be read as a parable, a war story, a classic children's fairy-tale, and many more things besides: The Little Prince is a book for everyone; after all, all grown-ups were children once. 'The Little Prince moves from asteroid to desert, from fable and comedy to enigmatic tragedy, in order to make one recurrent point: You can't love roses. You can only love a rose' Adam Gopnik, New Yorker

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from In the Enemy's Country: Being the Diary of a Little Tour in Germany Elsewhere During the Early Days of the War The period of time covered by this diary includes the two most pregnant months in the history of nations - only a great thinker or a great poet could tread firmly upon such sacred ground. The writer early recognized the futility of her pen, and for this reason cut out from the diary nearly all the pages relating to the War. What remains are the lighter aspects as seen by the wanderer - the ripples of the back-wash that dents and moulds the sand. Let us laugh sometimes - even if our lips are quivering and our hearts are sad. The Author's profits will be given to the Red Cross Fund of our gallant little Allies, Servia and Montenegro. Excerpt from Sheridan, Vol. 2 of 2: From New and Original Material; Including a Manuscript Diary by Georgina Duchess of Devonshire If anyone were to ask for the immediate cause of the French Revolution, the simplest answer would be, the American War. Lafayette was baptised in its blood, though Lafayette little suspected to what orgies France would be led by its creed. But the American War and the stimulus which it gave to political thought, were only symptoms of a vast upheaval that long exercised England. During the decade preceding that war the rights of man and the potent fictions of social contract already found vehement expression. Wilkes, the opportunist, had gambled with them gaily. Reform, annual parliaments, were brought forward, Indian government was "regulated," Ireland was considered as human, twice were the Catholics relieved. In this very year of 1780 Burke sent his winnowing fan to purge the stables of corruption. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Levy on Capital A Book on a Levy on Capital is already overdue. The proposal is attracting widespread attention but is not yet fully understood. There is therefore urgent need of explanation. My purpose in writing has been twofold. In the first place, I have collected and arranged all the necessary data for an adequate discussion of the problems involved. In the second place, I have explained and defended the proposal itself. The first part therefore deals with facts and the second with opinions. I have been scrupulously careful to keep these two objects distinct, and have never allowed my bias in favour of certain conclusions to distort my presentation of the facts. I do not of course pretend that my "facts" and figures are incontrovertible, but at least they are honest attempts to arrive at the truth. In all estimated figures there is a margin of error. It is important to realize that this margin is greater proportionally in some cases than others. Thus the estimates of pre-war wealth and its distribution in Chapter IV are derived from the careful computation of many statisticians starting from different bases, and may be regarded as accurate within a small marginal error, say about 10 per cent. On the other hand, the estimates of changes in wealth during the war are little more than hopeful conjectures, and some of them may be as much as 50 per cent, out or even more. The resulting estimates of aggregate post-war wealth may therefore be subject t

Excerpt from Under Greek Skies Dear Little Schoolmate: If you have read the story of Pilarica and Rafael in sunny Spain, you know that these "Stories for Little Schoolmates" are being written about the child you might have been, if your father and mother - or your grandfathers and grandmothers - had stayed in Spain, or some other far country, instead of coming across the sea to live in America. "In Sunny Spain" told you what you might have been doing a few years ago, if you had been a Spanish child during the Cuban war; and now this new book will tell you how children work and play in Greece. There are not yet many school children with Greek names in the United States, for most of the Greeks who have come to America have been young unmarried men, or else like Ulysses they have left their wives and children in Greece and mean to go back to them.
