Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... The book opens with the disappearance of a man named Franko Bradovich in Kosovo. Franko, a native Montanan posing as a local, was a spy of sorts, an operative who was helping the Lucani (a loose affiliation of DEA, FBI, CIA, etc. agents operating outside the law) bust a drug trafficking scheme from Bulgaria through Kosovo and Serbia to Europe. Franko was living with the family of a farmer named Daliljaj (and was in love with the farmer's daughter Fedima) and an apparently helpful American-raised Slav (Bozi Bazok), who's become part of the Serb army's shock troops, has warned Franko that the army was headed toward them with bloodshed in mind. Later, though, Franko, who's been posing as a drug trafficker, is brought in by local police for questioning and is beaten--making Bazok's helpfulness questionable at best. Either way, Franko can't really afford to stick around. Bazok agrees to help him and, reluctantly, Daliljaj, Fedima, and their relatives, escape the sweep, in exchange for the massive quantities of drugs he believes Franko is hiding. But Bazok betrays him and slaughters Daliljaj and all of Fedima's other family while they wait for Franko to return with transport. When Franko returns, Bazok has disappeared, taking Fedima with him. At this point the Lucani contact Joe Service. They ask him to go to Butte and see what he can see among the Serb population there. He and Helen Sedlacek travel from Detroit to Montana and start asking around for Franko Bradoviches (and permutations of the name). They find a Frank Oberavich and while he's not their man, he does provide them with excellent food, wine, and home-grown pot. And, it turns out, "Franko" from Kosovo is really Frank Oberavich's cousin Paulie and has been living on his property in a tent. Helen, Joe, and the Lucani aren't the only ones who are curious about "Franko's" whereabouts. A woman named Jamala King, a new Lucani, comes out to help them, and they're going to need all the help they can get because the alcoholic, bloodthirsty Bazok is headed toward Butte, convinced Franko was holding out on a major drug stash, and anxious to prevent him testifying to a war crimes tribunal about his slaughter of the Daliljaj family. Paulie, of course, blames himself for the deaths of Fedima and her family. What follows is a deadly cat-and-mouse game on a Montana mountain, as each side attempts to find the other first. It culminates in a terrifying night in abandoned mine tunnels and a bloody ambush in which one of the group protecting Paulie is revealed to be an impostor.

Great War Book Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Great War Book: With Maps and Diagrams In the history of Europe in the past 60 years, two events of supreme importance stand out like bold landmarks challenging the attention of every eye. One is the unification of Italy with its corollary, the loss of the temporal sovereignty of the Pope. The other is the drawing together under the virile leadership of Prussia of Germanic States long the victims of an unlovely Particularism, and the rise of Germany into a position of unchallengable strength as one of the greatest Powers on the Continent. In the main, the creation of these new great States was the work of two men. With bold statecraft, Cavour, reaping the fruits of the mystic idealism of Mazzini, and the romantic character and heroic achievements of Garibaldi, built up the structure of modern Italy on broad and deep foundations. No statesman has achieved so much with such slender means as Cavour, who was steeped to the lips in the political and economic doctrines of British Liberalism. The Favours of Fortune Cavour was fortunate in many things. He had a wise and prudent master in Victor Emmanuel, King of Sardinia, and he was singularly fortunate in obtaining for renascent Italy the active sympathy of Great Britain and France. Lord Palmerstone, Lord John Russell and Mr. Gladstone - the last of whom some years earlier had made all Europe ring with his protest against the infamies of King Bomba's rule in Naples - were warm and eager friends of Italian unity. But powerful as was their help, the emancipation of the Italians would not have been accomplished so swiftly without the potent aid of the French troops. Tolkien's influences, Translations of The Lord of the Rings, Adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, Red Book of Westmarch, Themes of The Lord of the Rings, The History of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien tourism, Translations of The Lord of the Rings into Russian, Translation of The Lord of the Rings into Swedish, The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, Tower Guard of Gondor. Excerpt: The Lord of the Rings is a high fantasy epic written by philologist and University of Oxford professor J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during the Second World War. It is the second best-selling novel ever written, with over 150 million copies sold. Although known to most readers as a trilogy, the work was initially intended by Tolkien to be one volume split into three sections. However, when Tolkien submitted the first volume entitled The Lord of the Rings to his publisher, it was decided for economic reasons to publish the work as three separate volumes, each consisting of two books, over the course of a year in 1954 55, creating the now familiar Lord of the Rings trilogy. The three volumes were entitled The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Structurally, the volumes are divided internally into six books, two per volume, with several appendices of background material, much abbreviated from Tolkien's originals, included at the end of the third volume. The Lord of the Rings has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into many languages, becoming one of the most popular and influential works in the field of 20th-century fantasy literature and the subject of several films. The title of the novel refers to the story's main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who had in an earlier age created the One Ring to rule the other Rings of Power as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth. From quiet beginnings in the Shire, a Hobbit land not unlike the English countryside, the story ranges across north-west Middle-earth, following the course of the War of the Ring through the eyes of its characters, notably the Hobbits Frodo Baggins, Samwise "Sam" Gamgee, Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck and Peregrin "Pippi

Excerpt from The Lord Kitchener: Memorial Book The tragedy of Lord Kitchener's death was so sudden, so surrounded by tremendous and dramatic events, that it was impossible at the time to do adequate justice to his memory. This volume has therefore been prepared as a slight memorial to his life and work. It contains tributes from men who write from intimate knowledge of this great man. It contains, further, a complete pictorial record of Lord Kitchener's life, made possible by the generous permissions granted by the various illustrated newspapers and by the art publishers and photographers who have with one accord placed their most valuable pictures at our disposal free of any cost. Thanks are also due to Messrs. James Spicer & Sons, Ltd., for their helpful gift of paper. It was felt in such a volume no attempt should be made at a formal biography, as so much information which is necessary for such a work is of a confidential nature and could not now be included. That must be left to the future, but I feel sure that readers will be glad to have a complete record of all Lord Kitchener's public utterances since the beginning of the War. All the profits from the sale of this book will be paid to the Lord Kitchener National Memorial Fund. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In "My Queer War", James Lord tells the story of a young man's exposure to the terrors, dislocations, and horrors of armed conflict. In 1942, a timid, inexperienced twenty-one-year-old Lord reports to Atlantic City, New Jersey, to enlist in the U.S. Army. His career in the armed forces takes him to Nevada, California, Boston, England, and, eventually, France and Germany, where he witnesses firsthand the ravages of total war on Europe's land and on its people. Along the way he comes to terms with his own sexuality, experiences the thrill of first love and the chill of disillusionment with his fellow man, and in a moment of great rashness makes the acquaintance of the world's most renowned artist, who will show him the way to a new life. "My Queer War" is a rich and moving record of one man's maturation in the crucible of the greatest war the world has known. If his war is queer, it is because each man's experience is strange in its own way. His is a story of universal significance and appeal, told by a wry and eloquent observer of the world and of himself.

Acclaimed as 'the best book about Tolkien', this award-winning biography explores J.R.R. Tolkien's wartime experiences and their impact on his life and his writing of The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. "To be caught in youth by 1914 was no less hideous an experience than in 1939 ! by 1918 all but one of my close friends were dead." So J.R.R. Tolkien responded to critics who saw The Lord of the Rings as a reaction to the Second World War. Tolkien and the Great War tells for the first time the full story of how he embarked on the creation of Middle-earth in his youth as the world around him was plunged into catastrophe. This biography reveals the horror and heroism that he experienced as a signals officer in the Battle of the Somme and introduces the circle of friends who spurred his mythology to life. It shows how, after two of these brilliant young men were killed, Tolkien pursued the dream they had all shared by launching his epic of good and evil. John Garth argues that the foundation of tragic experience in the First World War is the key to Middle-earth's enduring power. Tolkien used his mythic imagination not to escape from reality but to reflect and transform the cataclysm of his generatuion. While his contemporaries surrendered to disillusionment, he kept enchantment alive, reshaping an entire literary tradition into a form that resonates to this day. This is the first substantially new biography of Tolkien since 1977, meticulously researched and distilled from his personal wartime papers and a multitude of other sources.

ABOUT THE BOOK Domination behavior, using force to control others, is destabilizing and disruptive in families, groups and communities. At the international level, aggressive domination is war - the breakdown of the civilized order. Dr. Metzner tracks the roots of war and domination: in the psychological consequences of violent child abuse; in historical and prehistorical patterns of resource competition; and in mammalian predator behavior gone awry. One can see these ancient predatory patterns operating in the capitalist and imperialist policies of nation states. Seeking still deeper roots, he explores lesser known mythological and esoteric teachings: the Buddhist myths of power-addicted demons; the legend of the corruption of the Atlantean civilization; the Nordic myths of wars among the gods; and the Sumerian myths of dominating extra-terrestrial war-lord colonizers who genetically engineered our human ancestors. Finally, he examines the complex and profound teachings of the mysterious 20th century sage G.I. Gurdjieff, who located the ultimate causes of war in the extra-planetary environment and cosmic history. It is the author's intention and hope that these explorations of this most intractable of humanity's problems may lead others to further discoveries and possible solutions. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ralph Metzner, Ph.D. is a recognized pioneer in studies of consciousness and its transformations. He is a psychotherapist and Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where he was also the Academic Dean for ten years in the 1980s. He collaborated with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert in the studies of psychedelic drugs at Harvard in the 1960s, and co-authored "The Psychedelic Experience." His books include "Maps of Consciousness," "The Well of Remembrance," "The Unfolding Self" and "Green Psychology;" as well as two edited collections on the science and phenomenology of ayahuasca and the psilocybin mushrooms. He is founder and president of the Green Earth Foundation, an ecological educational organization, and teaches a training program in Alchemical Divination.

Excerpt: Velgarth is the planetary setting created by Mercedes Lackey, the author of the Valdemar Saga novels. The continents are not named. The Valdemar Saga primarily focuses on the story of the nation of Valdemar, and according to Mercedes Lackey's official bibliography, there are twenty-seven novels and six anthologies. Many of the inhabitants of Velgarth possess supernatural abilities. These skills primarily fall under the categories of Magic and Mind-Magic; though a number of them fall outside of either description. Magic, in Velgarth, refers to the ability to use a normally-invisible form of energy to produce fantastic results. This energy, also referred to as "Mage-power", is present both in living beings and the environment. Powerful streams of energy, known as ley-lines, may be utilized by some mages; and only the most skilled "Adept-level" mages can control and use the powerful nodes, or reservoirs, where two or more ley-lines meet. These lines and nodes can occur naturally, or can be created by extremely skilled mages. From these nodes, the energy is slowly siphoned into a desolate nether plane called the Void; and later returned to the world (Storm Warning). Magic is said to act much in the same way that water does. It is present in nature everywhere, but slowly gathers together - first in runnel-lines, which come together into feeder-lines, which then join together into ley-lines, and points where ley-lines converge are known as nodes: similar to how brooks and creeks slowly become streams, then rivers, and then crossings of these magical rivers form deep natural reservoirs similar to lakes of variable sizes. After the final cataclysm was averted (Storm Breaking), all magic was taken from the earth and n...

A Knight's Own Book of Chivalry Geoffroi de Charny. Introduction by Richard W. Kaeuper. Translation by Elspeth Kennedy "Of exceptional interest for the light shed on the ethos, style, and tastes of the secular aristocracy of the later Middle Ages. Charny's book offers an exploration and explanation of the values and proper manner of life for Christian knights and men at arms by someone who was a knight himself...A real boon to the historian."--London Review of Books "Kaeuper and Kennedy have done scholars a tremendous service in their publication of the excellent 1996 edition...This slimmed-down version now provides teachers of chivalry, warfare, and gender with an excellent resource for the classroom."--Medieval Review * On the great influence of a valiant lord: "The companions, who see that good warriors are honored by the great lords for their prowess, become more determined to attain this level of prowess." * On the lady who sees her knight honored: "All of this makes the noble lady rejoice greatly within herself at the fact that she has set her mind and heart on loving and helping to make such a good knight or good man-at-arms." * On the worthiest amusements: "The best pastime of all is to be often in good company, far from unworthy men and from unworthy activities from which no good can come." Enter the real world of knights and their code of ethics and behavior. Read how an aspiring knight of the fourteenth century would conduct himself and learn what he would have needed to know when traveling, fighting, appearing in court, and engaging fellow knights. Composed at the height of the Hundred Years War by Geoffroi de Charny, one of the most respected knights of his age, A Knight's Own Book of Chivalry was designed as a guide for members of the Company of the Star, an order created by Jean II of France in 1352 to rival the English Order of the Garter. This is the most authentic and complete manual on the day-to-day life of the knight that has survived the centuries, and this edition contains a specially commissioned introduction from historian Richard W. Kaeuper that gives the history of both the book and its author, who, among his other achievements, was the original owner of the Shroud of Turin. Geoffroi de Charny (1304?-56) was considered the quintessential knight of his age by his contemporaries. He was killed at the Battle of Poitiers. Richard W. Kaeuper is Professor of History at the University of Rochester. He is the author of a number of books, including Chivalry and Violence in Medieval Europe. Other major characters have special pages devoted to them, separate from this list. Please refer to them: Kazander, Korrus of the Isulk'im , was born in 711 to one of the Desert's nomadic tribes. He was an Isulki warrior and proud of it, though not insufferable to any but Chayla of Whitecliff. Kazander was like a prince among the Isulk'im. He was called Korrus, which meant battle leader. He partially earned that title by killing Merida, his people's sworn enemies. Like a lot of young Lords and Princes, Kazander had been trained at Remagev under Walvis. He learned many battle techniques there and every so often in the following years he would lead an Isulki raid on the trainees. Walvis found such tactics amusing and good training experiences for his students. On one of these raids, Kazander met Chayla, who was being fostered at Remagev. He was instantly taken with her, although he had a few wives already - a fact Chayla was not pleased to learn. The two developed an odd kind of relationship, him declaring her beauty and his affection to the heavens, and her rolling her eyes, while secretly amused and flattered. Their relationship took a serious turn after the Vellant'im attacked; Kazander became her protector - or rather avenger. Chayla had been captured by the Vellant'im and raped. It was Kazander who came to her rescue and slew her captors. He fought bravely and furiously in the Vellanti war, leading his Isulk'im to many victories. In the end, however, he fell in battle. He was greatly mourned by many, including Chayla, whom his wives welcomed and treated as one of them. Chayla was honored. She was even asked to named Kazander's youngest child, which she named Andra. Walvis, Lord of Remagev , was born in 685 and was Rohan's first squire. In addition to his training and squire duties, Walvis helped Rohan and Sioned meet in secret before the

"The art of command be the complete master, and yet the complete friend of every man on board; the temporal lord and yet the spiritual brother of every rating; to be detached and yet not dissociated.' A Seaman's Pocket-Book, 1943', has found huge appeal with the British public. Presented in the same format, the Officer's Handbook gathers together useful advice and instruction for those naval officers fighting the Second World War on all aspects of their job, expressed in the benevolent language of the day, when authority was respected. The Handbook has been compiled and edited by Brian Lavery, who provides commentary and an introduction. Sections include: the Officer's Aid Memoire containing notes of the training course at one of the officer training schools; Notes for medical officers and treatment of battle casualties afloat; Notes for captains on taking command of their first ship; Notes for commanding officers; Notes on the handling and safety of ships and notes on dealing with disobedience and mutiny. While suffused with nostalgia and charm, the various contents of this book are an authentic presentation of matters of training, authority and deportment in the wartime navy. Ultimate Book Of Heroic Failures FABER & FABER

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Anyone can be a success, but it takes real and original genius to foul up big time. These are the all-time greats, Gods in our field of study, surreal artists, who spurn mere drab success ('I'm a winner, Lord Sugar') to explore the vast, magical, life-enhancing possibilities of getting it wrong. Any of us could make a mistake, but these great souls can turn the simplest everyday task into a scene of jaw-dropping wonder. These are the immortals. Stephen Pile, President of the Not Terribly Good Club of Great Britain and author of the number-one bestseller "The Book of Heroic Failures", takes us on an all-new and mind-bendingly hilarious tour to celebrate the most spectacular and absurd failures of the last twenty-five years. Failure is everywhere. There are 235 stories in total spread from the Outer Hebrides to America, Ireland, Australia, Europe and Africa. The Syrian entry, for example, holds the world all-comers record as the driver who got most lost under Sat-nav direction (5000 miles). From the most driving test failures (959), the worst war correspondent (reporting from a broom cupboard), the worst robbery (when two different sets of bank robbers struck simultaneously) and the worst mugger (who left his victim $250 better off), to the holidaying rugby team of fifty-somethings from Dorchester who, due to a mis-translation, ended up playing the top team from Romania live on state TV, this is the ultimate book to make you feel better about yourself and the world around you.
