"Gore Vidal was a good friend for over sixty years. If you want to know who Gore really was, read In Bed with Gore Vidal, which uncovers, and evokes, his complicated private life and how that influenced and shaped his wider life, politics, and work. Lost loves, sex with hustlers, a life with Howard Austen, his relationships with women and the truth about his sexuality: this is a juicy, intelligent and honest portrait of a dear friend and exceptional writer and man."-Scotty Bowers, author of Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and The Secret Sex Lives of the Stars Gore Vidal claimed there was no such thing as "gay," only gay sexual acts. But what was the truth about his sex life and sexuality-and how did it affect and influence his writing and public life? In In Bed With Gore Vidal: Hustlers, Hollywood, and the Private World of an American Master, Tim Teeman interviews many of Vidal's closest family and friends, including Claire Bloom and Susan Sarandon, as well as surveying Vidal's own rich personal archive, to build a rounded portrait of who this lion of American letters really was away from the page. Here, revealed for the first time, Teeman discovers the Hollywood stars Vidal slept with and the reality of his life with partner Howard Austen-and the hustlers they both enjoyed. Was Gore's true love really a boy from prep school? Was he really, as he said, bisexual, and if so how close did he really get to marrying women, including Claire Bloom and Joanne Woodward? And if Vidal really was gay, why did he not want to say so? Did his own sex secrets underpin a legal fight with adversary William F. Buckley, still being played out after his death? Much as he fought against being categorized, Vidal, Teeman shows, also proved himself to be a pugnacious advocate for gay sexual freedom. Teeman also, for the first time, vividly and movingly evokes the last painful and tragic years of Vidal's life and the bitter, contentious legacy he has left behind. "Tim Teeman's biography of Gore Vidal is the perfect combination of racy gossip-from steamy celebrity liaisons to hustlers in Rome-and penetrating analysis. It shows how a complicated attitude to sex and sexuality shaped an author's life and work. An original, intriguing, and necessary portrait of an American icon." - Edmund White, author of City Boy "Sex with hustlers and Hollywood stars-for all his insistence that sexuality did not define him, Gore Vidal sure got around. And while he didn't hit the streets with placards, he was still, in many ways, a gay rights revolutionary. Tim Teeman's biography, full of new material and interviews, reveals how Vidal's sexuality and sex life influenced his life and his work - and tells, for the first time, the moving story of his painful last years. With deftness, wit, intelligence, and a journalist's nose for a good story, Teeman pulls back the curtain on an American icon. It seems Gore Vidal can still surprise us. What a page-turner!" -William J. Mann, author of Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn and Hello, Gorgeous: Becoming Barbra Streisand About the Author: Tim Teeman is a journalist and broadcaster. For fourteen years he has worked as an editor, feature writer, and interviewer for The Times of London, most recently as their US Correspondent, in which he covered stories like Hurricane Sandy and profiled many celebrities and public figures including Woody Allen, George Clooney, and Liza Minnelli. He has also contributed to publications including Elle, The New Statesman, The Guardian, The Independent, Independent on Sunday, Attitude, and Time Out. In Bed With Gore Vidal is his first book. He lives in New York City.

It's time to set the record straight. I write alone, in a darkened bedroom, wearing my PJs, eating bananas, my laptop on a pillow in front of me ...' Here's another book to tantalize your imagination. Gino is a successful fashion photographer with a studio in London. The pressure of his success gets to him, so he decides to take time out to write his first book. He searches the internet for an ideal location where he can escape to and write. He settles for a log cabin nesting in the mountain range between France and Spain. On his arrival, he sets about setting up his laptop by a widow with a perfect view to inspire his writing. He begins to explore the wild area around the cabin. The sound of rushing water leads him to a lake. After a relaxing nude swim, he returns to the cabin. He was sure that he had closed the cabin door. Nervously, he enters only to find that his laptop had been opened up. On the screen was the start of a story. Who the hell could be responsible for this as he had not told anyone back home of his whereabouts? That night in bed, he is suddenly aware that he was not alone. Fear leads him to reach out across the bed in search of a person next to him and, to his relief, found nobody. The next morning, he finds that the story on his laptop has been added to. He reads it and, just for fun, adds his own words to the story. This routine continues for a couple of days, and Dino begins to enjoy the situation, but who is his coauthor? The days and nights pass until one night a vision appears at the foot of his bed dressed in sackcloth. The phantom is a handsome long-haired young man named Marco who assures Gino he is friendly. It appears that he had been killed two hundred years ago on the very spot where the cabin is situated and he returns annually. They continue to write the book together and on completion decide to go to London together to meet the publishers. Marco has no clothes and travels naked but not able to be seen for he is a ghost. They become lovers, and their lives are just full of hilarious situations where they live London life with the advantage of Marco being able to appear and disappear when required. A great advantage at times . . . but often creates tricky problems.

Obsession Ballantine

Powieść zagranicznaSensacja. Thiller. Kryminał

Fans of Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware novels will be pleased that Obsession features lots of Alex Delaware playing judicious shrink (both to a patient and in solving crimes) and plenty of Milo investigating. For those who don't like Robin, she plays a tiny role in this story. The story starts off with a very strong premise: A former patient, Tanya Bigelow, wants his help in contacting Milo to get some help in checking out what seems to be a death-bed confession from her adopted mother, Patty, a highly regarded ER nurse. Alex correctly points out that there may be no crime at all, but Tanya wants to know. Tanya becomes Alex's patient again as her obsessive-compulsive tendencies resurface in the wake of becoming an orphan for the second time. Part of the appeal of the story is that you'll be rooting for Tanya throughout. That makes it easier to emotionally relate to the mystery. The book soon bogs down into an extensive procedural that involves checking out all of the crimes associated with the areas around the places where Patty and Tanya had lived. Very little of this digging turns out to be relevant to solving the Patty mystery . . . but new questions arise as the investigation triggers strong reactions that pull Alex and Milo toward different puzzles. Along the way, you'll meet some pretty unappealing (at best) and disgusting (at worst) characters who will usually surprise you by acting more unpleasantly than you expect. I felt like I needed a long shower with lots of soap to get the filth off me after reading this book. The characters are either drawn in very simple terms, or stay exactly the same throughout the book, with the exception of Tanya. Thank God for that! Otherwise, you will often feel like you are reading an overly plot-driven novel where the characters don't matter. If you like intricate plots, you'll feel like you've got a dandy here. For my taste, the plot development seemed like it was overdone. I would have been happier with a simpler plot that moved along faster in a shorter book. If abnormal psychology is your thing, Obsession is rich in that vein. You'll get keen insights into at least two different types that you probably don't run across every day. The book's charm is mostly wrapped up in many short sequences involving Blanche, Alex's dog. These sections are fine enough to make you want to see a whole book that revolves around Alex and Blanche.

Henri Matisse by Alastair Sooke - an essential guide to one of the 20th century's greatest artists. 'One January morning in 1941, only a fortnight or so after his seventy-first birthday, the bearded and bespectacled French artist Henri Matisse was lying in a hospital bed preparing to die.' Diagnosed with cancer, the acclaimed painter, and rival of Picasso, seemed to be facing his demise. Then something unexpected happened. After a life-saving operation that left him too weak to paint, and often too frail to even get out of bed, Matisse invented a ground-breaking and effortless new way of making art. The results rank among his greatest work. In an astonishing blaze of creativity, he began conjuring mesmerising designs of dazzling dancers and thrilling tightrope walkers, sensuous swimmers and mythical figures falling from the heavens. His joyful and unprecedented new works were as spontaneous as jazz music and as wondrous as crystal-clear lagoons. Their medium? Coloured paper and scissors. This book, by art critic and broadcaster Alastair Sooke, focuses on Matisse's extraordinary final decade, which he called 'a second life', after he had returned from the grave. Both a biography and a guide to Matisse's 'cut-outs', it tells the story of the valedictory flourish of one of the most important and beloved artists of the twentieth century. Published in time for a major Tate Modern retrospective. "Sooke is an immensely engaging character. He has none of the weighty self-regard that often afflicts art experts and critics; rather he approaches his subjects with a questioning, open, exploratory attitude". (Sarah Vine, The Times). "His shows are excellent - clever, lively, scholarly, but not too lecturey; he's very good at linking his painters with the world outside the studio, and at how these artists have affected the world today". (Sam Wollaston reviewing). "Modern Masters". (Guardian). Alastair Sooke is art critic of the Daily Telegraph. He has written and presented documentaries on television and radio for the BBC, including Modern Masters, The World's Most Expensive Paintings, Treasures of Ancient Rome and, most recently, Treasures of Ancient Egypt. He is a regular reporter for The Culture Show on BBC Two. He is the author of Roy Lichtenstein: How Modern Art was Saved by Donald Duck.

Fairy tale meets concept book - and a tiny, lonely king welcomes big changes - in this inspired picture book, beautifully illustrated with bold, geometric art. Once upon a time there was a tiny king who lived in a big castle guarded by lots of big soldiers. Every day the Tiny King eats an enormous feast at his big dining table (he can never finish it all), he rides on his big horse (he is so tiny that he's thrown off every time), bathes in his big bath (not much fun), and sleeps, not very well, in his big bed all alone. Everything is just too big, and the Tiny King is sad and lonely. Until one day he meets a big princess and asks her to be his queen. Not long after, they are blessed with children - lots of children! Now everything is just the right size. The enormous meals are always gobbled up, his horse is just the right size for family outings, bath time is a real riot, and the Tiny King sleeps soundly at last. With bright, bold cut-outs and a whimsical use of collage, Japanese artist Taro Miura creates a witty, heart-warming story with huge appeal for readers big and small. This is a refreshingly modern fairy tale with broad appeal for both children and adults. The brightly coloured geometric shapes and the creative use of collage in the artwork will appeal to young children and design-loving adults alike.
