24th Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War Stackpole Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Formed in the summer of 1862, the 24th Wisconsin Infantry participated in many major battles of the Western theatre, earning a reputation as a brave, hard-fighting unit. Unlike unit histories, this book makes no attempt, as the author freely admits, to provide "an objective history" of the regiment. Rather, the book digs deeper, following the personal stories of the soldiers themselves, providing hundreds of individual vignettes that, taken together, paint a vivid picture of the life of a Union soldier.

The United States saw long-simmering sectional tensions erupt into fighting at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, in April 1861, beginning what would become the most cataclysmic military struggle in the western world between Waterloo and the First World War. This book, with a new foreword by Professor James McPherson, traces the course of the war in both Eastern and Western theatres, looking at strategic, geographical and logistic factors as well as the soldiers, officers, and civilians who were caught up in the conflict. During the four years of war at least 620,000 soldiers and sailors died in bloody fighting at more than 10,000 recorded battles, engagements and skirmishes.

In August 1861, a nineteen-year-old Illinois farm boy named Benjamin Webster ("Webb") Baker enlisted in the Union Army. For three years he fought in Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia--virtually the whole Western theater. Through it all he wrote compelling letters home describing his experiences. Generations later Benson Bobrick has used his ancestor's letters to write this stirring chronicle of one soldier's war. Not since the fictional "The Red Badge of Courage" have the trials of a soldier's Civil War been told with such beguiling force. Pea Ridge, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga--at these and other battles, Webb experienced the horror of war firsthand. By turns stoic, brave, and sorrowful, he writes of sleeping on the bare ground in winter, of harsh food rationing because of Confederate cavalry raids on baggage trains, of being wounded, and, most movingly, of death--including the death of his own brother, whom he buried on the field. Bobrick skillfully blends that voice with his own in a poignant tribute to his great-grandfather and a vivid narrative that will be cherished by anyone interested in the Civil War.

Secrets of Warfare: Exposing the Myths and Hidden History of Weapons and Battles NEW PAGE BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

You've already heard about the first Civil War battle between the ironclad warships the Monitor and the Merrimac, and about why Custer's last stand was, well, his last, but have you heard about the incredibly fast and maneuverable airship Dr. Solomon Andrews, which was offered to the government during the Civil War? "Secrets of Warfare" exposes many of the myths that have kept the public misinformed about warfare, the most dangerous of all human activities. Some myths are the result of deliberate misrepresentation; others, the result of ignorance or bigotry. In any case, there is no substitute for the truth. "Secrets of Warfare" explores: Battles from the ancient world and the alleged superiority of Western nations from the earliest times. The famed myth of the English longbow. The introduction of submarines to warfare prior to World War I. The deadliest American air raids of World War II. The supposed "attack" on U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Eastern Front 1914 - 1920 Casemate

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Recreates the battles and campaigns that raged at The Eastern Front during World War I Updated for 2012 with a new forward by Dennis Showalter The front in the East was much longer than in the West. The theatre of war was delimited by the Baltic Sea in the West and Moscow in the East, a distance of 1,200kms, and Saint Petersburg in the North and the Black Sea in the South, a distance of more than 1,600kms. While World War I on the Western Front developed into trench warfare, the battle lines on the Eastern Front were much more fluid; trenches never truly developed. The greater length of the front ensured that the density of soldiers in the line was lower so the line was easier to break. Once broken, the sparse communication networks made it difficult for the defender to rush reinforcements to the rupture in the line to mount a counteroffensive and seal off a breakthrough. Also, the terrain in the Eastern European theatre was quite solid, often making it near impossible to construct anything resembling the complicated trench systems on the Western Front, which had muddier and much more workable terrain. In short, on the Eastern front the side defending did not have the overwhelming advantages it had on the Western front. Because of this, front lines in the East kept on shifting throughout the conflict, and not just near the beginning and end of the fighting, as was the case in the West. In fact the greatest advance of the whole war was made in the East by the German Army in the summer of 1915. With the aid of numerous black and white and colour photographs, many previously unpublished, the History of World War I series recreates the battles and campaigns that raged across the surface of the globe, on land, at sea and in the air. The text is complemented by full-colour maps that guide the reader through specific actions and campaigns.

1864 Franklin-Nashville Campaign Praeger Publishers Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Ideal for general readers interested in military history of the Civil War as well as those concentrating on the western campaigns, The 1864 Franklin-Nashville Campaign: The Finishing Stroke examines how the strategic and tactical decisions by Confederate and Union commanders contributed to the smashing Northern victories in Tennessee in November-December 1864. The book also considers the conflict through the lens of New Military History, including the manner in which the battles both affected and were affected by civilian individuals, the environment, and common soldiers such as Confederate veteran Sam Watkins. The result of author Michael Thomas Smith's extensive research into the Civil War and his recognition of inadequate coverage of the final western campaigns in the existing literature, this work serves to rectify this oversight. The book also questions the concept of the outcome of the Civil War as being essentially attributable to superior Northern organization and management-the "organized war to victory" theory as termed by its proponents.

Military Atlas Of WWI Casemate

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

World War I might conjure up images of the trenches of the Western Front, but it was a far more complex conflict fought in a number of theatres: an air war, a war fought in the Balkans, Italy, Africa, Turkey, the Middle East, and also a naval war in the South Atlantic, South Pacific and Indian Oceans. The Military Atlas of World War I is a comprehensive visual guide to this complex conflict. It plots the exact course of the land, sea and air campaigns in fine detail, enabling the reader to trace the ebb and flow of the fortunes of all sides. With the aid of more than 170 full-colour maps, every theatre of war is covered - from the Western Front to Sumatra, from Gallipoli to Galicia to Ghana, from Dogger Bank to Dalmatia, from Romania to Rhodesia, from the Falklands to Togo to Sinai. All the maps have been specially commissioned from an expert cartographer. Each map has been designed to highlight a particular aspect of the war, thus they vary in shape and size - from isometric to semi-circular and full-page to double-spread - and in outlook, with some maps giving a global perspective while others depict the exact movement of armed forces on the land, sea and air. Battles such as Jutland, the Somme, Cambrai and the Gallipoli campaign are shown in great detail. All maps are accompanied by a key, which helps the reader to understand the action and events. With expert, accessible text, this complete atlas provides an invaluable work of reference for both the general reader and the serious student of World War I.

Warfare in the Age of Napoleon-Volume 1 Leonaur Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The first volume of a major work on warfare in the Napoleonic age The author of this substantial multi-volume history, Theodore A Dodge, was not only an historian of stature and note but also a soldier. He wrote several well regarded histories of the campaigns and battles of the Civil War and other works of military history. Perhaps his most outstanding achievement was a series of books, published under the umbrella title 'the Art of War,' focusing on different historical periods as typified by their most notable military commanders-including the campaigns of Alexander, Hannibal and Caesar in the ancient world and the wars of the 17th and 18th century as fought by great captains including Gustavus Adolphus, Frederick and Marlborough. This volume is part of his in depth study of the Napoleonic period, which in its entirety was comprised of four huge volumes that benefited from the inclusion of almost 800 small scale uniform drawings, portraits of notable personalities and numerous theatre, campaign and battlefield maps. This retitled Leonaur edition has been revised to form volumes of approximately equal size reformatted to enable us to enlarge all the illustrations and maps for the benefit of the reader. This series is an excellent history of the campaigns and battles of the Napoleonic Age but it goes far beyond the historical record. Dodge critically examines the strategies and tactics of all the military commanders in such a clear and authoritative manner that the student of military history can clearly understand the errors of those about to suffer defeat and the expertise-or in the case of Napoleon Bonaparte, the military genius-of the victors. This is an invaluable guide to warfare in the age of Napoleon and is highly recommended. In this first in the series Dodge considers the beginning of the Revolutionary Wars and the structures, tactics and strategies of those who fought them. The Siege of Toulon and the campaigns in Italy are covered in detail including notable engagements at Castiglione, Arcole, Rivoli and others. This volume concludes as the war turns to Massena's campaign in Austria. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Italy's Sorrow - 2834692208

Italy's Sorrow Harper Collins

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Today Italy is a land of beauty and prosperity but in 1944-45 it had become a place of nightmares, a land of violence, war, and destruction. James Holland's ground-breaking account expertly documents the German advance and a segment of Italian history that has been largely neglected. The war in Italy was the most destructive campaign in the west as the Allies and Germans fought a long, bitter and highly attritional conflict up the mountainous leg of Italy during the last twelve months of the Second World War. For front-line troops, casualties rates at Cassino and then along the notorious Gothic Line were as high as they had been along the Western Front in the First World War. There were further similarities too: blasted landscapes, rain and mud. For the men who fought there, Italy really was the hardest campaign. And while the Allies and Germans were slogging it out through the mountains, the Italians were fighting their own battles, one where Partisans and Fascists were pitted against each other in a bloody civil war. Around them, civilians tried to live through the carnage, terror and anarchy while, in the wake of the Allied advance, beleaguered and impoverished Italians were forced to pick their way through the ruins of their homes and country and often forced into making terrible and heart-rending decisions in order to survive. 'Italy's Sorrow' is the first account of the war in that most beautiful of countries to tell the story from all sides and to include the experiences of soldiers and civilians alike. Offering extensive new research, it weaves together the drama and tragedy of a terrible year of war with new perspectives and material on some of the most debated episodes to have emerged from the Second World War. It is a magnificent achievement by one of our finest young military historians.

Arriving in Iraq on the eve of the U.S. invasion, unaffiliated with any newspaper and hoping to pick up assignments along the way, Ashley Gilbertson was one of the first photojournalists to cover the disintegration of America's military triumph as looting and score-settling convulsed Iraqi cities. Just twenty-five years old at the time, Gilbertson soon landed a contract with the "New York Times", and his extraordinary images of life in occupied Iraq and of American troops in action began appearing in the paper regularly. Throughout his work, Gilbertson took great risks to document the risks taken by others, whether dodging sniper fire with American infantry, photographing an Iraqi bomb squad as they defused IEDs, or following marines into the cauldron of urban combat. "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" gathers the best of Gilbertson's photographs, chronicling America's early battles in Iraq, the initial occupation of Baghdad, the insurgency that erupted shortly afterward, the dramatic battle to overtake Falluja, and the country's first national elections. No Western photojournalist has done as much sustianed work in occupied Iraq as Gilbertson, and this wide-ranging treatment of the war from the viewpoint of a photographer is the first of its kind. Accompanying each section of the book is a personal account of Gilbertson's experiences covering the conflict. Throughout, he conveys the exhilaration and terror of photographing war, as well as the challenges of photojournalism in our age of embedded reporting. But ultimately, and just as importantly, "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" tells the story of Gilbertson's own journey from hard-drinking bravado to the grave realism of a scarred survivor. Here he struggles with guilt over the death of a marine escort, tells candidly of his own experience with post-traumatic stress disorder, and grapples with the reality that Iraq - despite the sacrifice in Iraqi and American lives - has descended into a civil war with no end in sight. A searing account of the American experience in Iraq, "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is sure to become one of the classic war photography books of our time.

John Wesley Powell was an American original. He was the last of the nation's great continental explorers and the first of a new breed of public servant: part scientist, part social reformer, part institution builder. His work and life reveal an enduringly valuable way of thinking about land, water, and society as parts of an interconnected whole; he was America's first great bioregional thinker."Seeing Things Whole" presents John Wesley Powell in the full diversity of his achievements and interests, bringing together in a single volume writings ranging from his gripping account of exploring the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon to his views on the evolution of civilization, along with the seminal writings in which he sets forth his ideas on western settlement and the allocation and management of western resources. The centerpiece of "Seeing Things Whole" is a series of selections from the famous 1878 Report on the Lands of the Arid Region and related magazine articles in which Powell further develops the themes of the report. In those, he recommends organizing the Arid Lands into watershed commonwealths governed by resident citizens whose interlocking interests create the checks and balances essential to wise stewardship of the land. This was the central focus of John Wesley Powell's bioregional vision, and it remains a model for governance that many westerners see as a viable solution to the resource management conflicts that continue to bedevil the region.Throughout the collection, award-winning writer and historian William deBuys brilliantly sets the historical context for Powell's work. Section introductions and extensive descriptive notes take the reader through the evolution of John Wesley Powell's interests and ideas from his role as an officer in the Civil War through his critique of Social Darwinism and landmark categorization of Indian languages, to the climatic yet ultimately futile battles he fought to win adoption of his land-use proposals."Seeing Things Whole" presents the essence of the extraordinary legacy that John Wesley Powell has left to the American people, and to people everywhere who strive to reconcile the demands of society with the imperatives of the land.

Lawrence in Arabia ATLANTIC BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Arab Revolt against the Turks in World War One was, in the words of T.E. Lawrence, 'a sideshow of a sideshow'. Amidst the slaughter in European trenches, the Western combatants paid scant attention to the Middle Eastern theatre. As a result, the conflict was shaped to a remarkable degree by a small handful of adventurers and low-level officers far removed from the corridors of power. At the centre of it all was Lawrence. In early 1914 he was an archaeologist excavating ruins in the sands of Syria; by 1917 he was battling both the enemy and his own government to bring about the vision he had for the Arab people. Operating in the Middle East at the same time, but to wildly different ends, were three other important players: a German attache, an American oilman and a committed Zionist. The intertwined paths of these four young men - the schemes they put in place, the battles they fought, the betrayals they endured and committed - mirror the grandeur, intrigue and tragedy of the war in the desert.
