24th Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War Stackpole Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Formed in the summer of 1862, the 24th Wisconsin Infantry participated in many major battles of the Western theatre, earning a reputation as a brave, hard-fighting unit. Unlike unit histories, this book makes no attempt, as the author freely admits, to provide "an objective history" of the regiment. Rather, the book digs deeper, following the personal stories of the soldiers themselves, providing hundreds of individual vignettes that, taken together, paint a vivid picture of the life of a Union soldier.

The United States saw long-simmering sectional tensions erupt into fighting at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, in April 1861, beginning what would become the most cataclysmic military struggle in the western world between Waterloo and the First World War. This book, with a new foreword by Professor James McPherson, traces the course of the war in both Eastern and Western theatres, looking at strategic, geographical and logistic factors as well as the soldiers, officers, and civilians who were caught up in the conflict. During the four years of war at least 620,000 soldiers and sailors died in bloody fighting at more than 10,000 recorded battles, engagements and skirmishes.

In August 1861, a nineteen-year-old Illinois farm boy named Benjamin Webster ("Webb") Baker enlisted in the Union Army. For three years he fought in Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia--virtually the whole Western theater. Through it all he wrote compelling letters home describing his experiences. Generations later Benson Bobrick has used his ancestor's letters to write this stirring chronicle of one soldier's war. Not since the fictional "The Red Badge of Courage" have the trials of a soldier's Civil War been told with such beguiling force. Pea Ridge, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga--at these and other battles, Webb experienced the horror of war firsthand. By turns stoic, brave, and sorrowful, he writes of sleeping on the bare ground in winter, of harsh food rationing because of Confederate cavalry raids on baggage trains, of being wounded, and, most movingly, of death--including the death of his own brother, whom he buried on the field. Bobrick skillfully blends that voice with his own in a poignant tribute to his great-grandfather and a vivid narrative that will be cherished by anyone interested in the Civil War.

Secrets of Warfare: Exposing the Myths and Hidden History of Weapons and Battles NEW PAGE BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

You've already heard about the first Civil War battle between the ironclad warships the Monitor and the Merrimac, and about why Custer's last stand was, well, his last, but have you heard about the incredibly fast and maneuverable airship Dr. Solomon Andrews, which was offered to the government during the Civil War? "Secrets of Warfare" exposes many of the myths that have kept the public misinformed about warfare, the most dangerous of all human activities. Some myths are the result of deliberate misrepresentation; others, the result of ignorance or bigotry. In any case, there is no substitute for the truth. "Secrets of Warfare" explores: Battles from the ancient world and the alleged superiority of Western nations from the earliest times. The famed myth of the English longbow. The introduction of submarines to warfare prior to World War I. The deadliest American air raids of World War II. The supposed "attack" on U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin.

More than 80 years on, the Great War - and particularly the great battles such as the Somme and Verdun - continues to fascinate us and to cast long shadows over the world in which we live. For Britain, the effort and sacrifice involved in creating and sustaining its first-ever and biggest-ever mass citizen army, and in helping to defeat the main enemy in the decisive theatre of operations, left deep emotional and psychological scars that have influenced much of the nation's subsequent history and that are still felt today. In this volume, the author -an acknowledged authority on the Western Front - re-examines the struggle and sheds an interesting new light on the nature, course and effects of the fighting in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1918.

Eastern Front 1914 - 1920 Casemate

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Recreates the battles and campaigns that raged at The Eastern Front during World War I Updated for 2012 with a new forward by Dennis Showalter The front in the East was much longer than in the West. The theatre of war was delimited by the Baltic Sea in the West and Moscow in the East, a distance of 1,200kms, and Saint Petersburg in the North and the Black Sea in the South, a distance of more than 1,600kms. While World War I on the Western Front developed into trench warfare, the battle lines on the Eastern Front were much more fluid; trenches never truly developed. The greater length of the front ensured that the density of soldiers in the line was lower so the line was easier to break. Once broken, the sparse communication networks made it difficult for the defender to rush reinforcements to the rupture in the line to mount a counteroffensive and seal off a breakthrough. Also, the terrain in the Eastern European theatre was quite solid, often making it near impossible to construct anything resembling the complicated trench systems on the Western Front, which had muddier and much more workable terrain. In short, on the Eastern front the side defending did not have the overwhelming advantages it had on the Western front. Because of this, front lines in the East kept on shifting throughout the conflict, and not just near the beginning and end of the fighting, as was the case in the West. In fact the greatest advance of the whole war was made in the East by the German Army in the summer of 1915. With the aid of numerous black and white and colour photographs, many previously unpublished, the History of World War I series recreates the battles and campaigns that raged across the surface of the globe, on land, at sea and in the air. The text is complemented by full-colour maps that guide the reader through specific actions and campaigns.

Warfare in the Age of Napoleon-Volume 3 Leonaur Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The third volume of a major work on warfare in the Napoleonic age The author of this substantial multi-volume history, Theodore A Dodge, was not only an historian of stature and note but also a soldier. He wrote several well regarded histories of the campaigns and battles of the Civil War and other works of military history. Perhaps his most outstanding achievement was a series of books, published under the umbrella title 'the Art of War,' focusing on different historical periods as typified by their most notable military commanders-including the campaigns of Alexander, Hannibal and Caesar in the ancient world and the wars of the 17th and 18th century as fought by great captains including Gustavus Adolphus, Frederick and Marlborough. This volume is part of his in depth study of the Napoleonic period, which in its entirety was comprised of four huge volumes that benefited from the inclusion of almost 800 small scale uniform drawings, portraits of notable personalities and numerous theatre, campaign and battlefield maps. This retitled Leonaur edition has been revised to form volumes of approximately equal size reformatted to enable us to enlarge all the illustrations and maps for the benefit of the reader. This series is an excellent history of the campaigns and battles of the Napoleonic Age but it goes far beyond the historical record. Dodge critically examines the strategies and tactics of all the military commanders in such a clear and authoritative manner that the student of military history can clearly understand the errors of those about to suffer defeat and the expertise-or in the case of Napoleon Bonaparte, the military genius-of the victors. This is an invaluable guide to warfare in the age of Napoleon and is highly recommended. This third volume explains the 'Napoleonic Method' of waging war which swept the French to victory against adversaries whose methodology of war was outmoded. This volume covers the pivotal battles where Napoleon displayed his military genius to best effect at Austerlitz, Jena, Auerstadt, Pultusk, Eylau, Heilsburg and Friedland, then turns to events in the Iberian peninsula where the British army campaigned under the command of a general of a higher calibre-Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

The War of the Fifth Coalition, covered in this fourth volume, describes the battles fought at Ratisbon, Abensberg, Eckmuhl, Aspern-Essling, Znaim and Wagram. The tide of war in the Iberian peninsula continued to turn against the French in favour of Britain and its Spanish and Portuguese Allies who were mostly victorious at Oporto, Talavera, Busaco, Fuentes d'Onoro, Albuera and Badajoz. In 1812 the Emperor Napoleon would undertake his most ambitious military enterprise and his greatest folly-the invasion of Russia by an enormous Grand Army, very few of whom would survive the ordeal. This fifth volume covers the final battles as Napoleons Grand Army reached his objective of the Russian capital. Smolensk, Valutino and Borodino preceded the untenable occupation of the Moscow followed by the retreat to the Beresina. In the Iberian peninsula the Duke of Wellington was inflicting reverses on the French at Salamanca and Vittoria. Napoleon's star was now waning and 1813 brought Lutzen, Bautzen, Dresden and Leipzig spelling the beginning of the end for the Napoleonic era. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

This is an invaluable guide to warfare in the age of Napoleon and is highly recommended. This final volume of Dodge's brilliant account of the 'art of war' in the Napoleonic Age concludes with the period to the end of the First Empire when the fortunes of the imperial allies turned in their favour and Napoleon and his forces, weakened by reverses, were unable to contain them. Napoleon's brilliance in the campaigns of 1814 showed that he was still an incomparable grand commander on the field of battle, especially in engagements when the odds were against him. The war had turned to one of attrition so the Empire fell, the emperor abdicated, the Bourbon monarchy was restored and Europe breathed a collective sigh of relief. But it was not quite the end-Napoleon's last great gamble for a return to power, 'The Hundred Days' and the Campaign of 1815 culminating in the great battle of Waterloo on June 18th 1815, brought the most significant commanders of both sides to a field of conflict for the first and last time. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Italy's Sorrow - 2834692208

Italy's Sorrow Harper Collins

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Today Italy is a land of beauty and prosperity but in 1944-45 it had become a place of nightmares, a land of violence, war, and destruction. James Holland's ground-breaking account expertly documents the German advance and a segment of Italian history that has been largely neglected. The war in Italy was the most destructive campaign in the west as the Allies and Germans fought a long, bitter and highly attritional conflict up the mountainous leg of Italy during the last twelve months of the Second World War. For front-line troops, casualties rates at Cassino and then along the notorious Gothic Line were as high as they had been along the Western Front in the First World War. There were further similarities too: blasted landscapes, rain and mud. For the men who fought there, Italy really was the hardest campaign. And while the Allies and Germans were slogging it out through the mountains, the Italians were fighting their own battles, one where Partisans and Fascists were pitted against each other in a bloody civil war. Around them, civilians tried to live through the carnage, terror and anarchy while, in the wake of the Allied advance, beleaguered and impoverished Italians were forced to pick their way through the ruins of their homes and country and often forced into making terrible and heart-rending decisions in order to survive. 'Italy's Sorrow' is the first account of the war in that most beautiful of countries to tell the story from all sides and to include the experiences of soldiers and civilians alike. Offering extensive new research, it weaves together the drama and tragedy of a terrible year of war with new perspectives and material on some of the most debated episodes to have emerged from the Second World War. It is a magnificent achievement by one of our finest young military historians.
