Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Far East, grade: 1,3, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Lehrstuhl für Politik und Zeitgeschichte des Nahen Ostens), course: Revolt and Revolution in the Middle East, language: English, abstract: The social movement theory was being developed over a long period of time and still is, as an interdisciplinary study of the social sciences. Many scientists as well as scholars used this theory in order to explain why mobilization occurs, the emergence of movements, their revolutionary characteristics in general and the different types of movements in their different stages in specific.§It deals with the political opportunity structure and constraints for a movement within a system or regime, the existing resources for a movement or its members to mobilize for their or its claims and last but not least the framing of its goals and demands in order to gain as much support as possible from the public and political sphere.§Furthermore subject of these studies is the effect and the outcomes of mass mobilization and collective action on social, political and cultural spheres. There are different perspectives, in which e.g. the political opportunity structure is used as a variable to examine the social developments and the political outcomes and consequences. As the most important scholars who laid the framework for the today known theory have to be named Charles Tilly, Sidney Tarrow, Michael Mann, Doug McAdam.

Blacks in and Out of the Left HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS

The radical black left that played a crucial role in twentieth-century struggles for equality and justice has largely disappeared. Michael Dawson investigates the causes and consequences of the decline of black radicalism as a force in American politics and argues that the conventional left has failed to take race sufficiently seriously as a historical force in reshaping American institutions, politics, and civil society. African Americans have been in the vanguard of progressive social movements throughout American history, but they have been written out of many histories of social liberalism. Focusing on the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the Black Power movement, Dawson examines successive failures of socialists and Marxists to enlist sympathetic blacks, and white leftists' refusal to fight for the cause of racial equality. Angered by the often outright hostility of the Socialist Party and similar social democratic organizations, black leftists separated themselves from these groups and either turned to the hard left or stayed independent. A generation later, the same phenomenon helped fueled the Black Power movement's turn toward a variety of black nationalist, Maoist, and other radical political groups. The 2008 election of Barack Obama notwithstanding, many African Americans still believe they will not realize the fruits of American prosperity any time soon. This pervasive discontent, Dawson suggests, must be mobilized within the black community into active opposition to the social and economic status quo. Black politics needs to find its way back to its radical roots as a vital component of new American progressive movements.

What are the consequences of European integration on social movements? Who are the "winners" and the "losers" of Europe's organized civil society? This book explores the Europeanization of contention through an in-depth, comparative analysis of French and German pro-asylum movements since the end of the 1990s. Through an examination of their networks, discourses, and collective actions, it shows that the groups composing these movements display different degrees and forms of Europeanization, reflected in different fields of protest. More generally, it shows the multiple strategies implemented by activists to Europeanize their scope of mobilization and by doing so participate in the construction of a European public sphere.

The World during the First World War Klartext-Verlagsges.

When the First World War is described as the seminal catastrophe of the 20th century, this refers mainly to its effects on Europe. However, this perspective does not adequately capture the global dimensions of the War, especially when it comes to the investigation of socio-historical aspects, war experiences, or the perceptions of veterans and populations. The book sets the focus on the First World War as a global event with far-reaching consequences Examination of incidents in Asia, Africa, and Latin America not only makes it possible to address the causes, courses, and consequences of the First World War in their global diversity, but it also allows the determining factors of time and space to be taken into account.§In particular regional developments and their actors need to be examined very closely. This includes not only active combatants such as soldiers, officers, and rear services, but also the civilian population, intellectuals, and policy makers. Analysis of local social, economic, and political movements in Asia, Africa. and Latin America before, during, and after the First World War with respect to the mandate solutions and the October Revolution removes research from the constraints of a narrow European approach. §Authors:§Andreas Gestrich, Stig Förster, Stefan Rinke, Toyin Falola, Frances Higginbotham Nalle, Stefan Reichmuth, Guoqi Xu, Touradj Atabaki, Jennifer Jenkins, Katrin Bromber, Ravi Ahuja, Susanne Kuß, Jan Schmidt, Joan Beaumont, Michael Göbel, Dirk Hoerder, Ali Raza, Patricio Geli, Radika Singha, Babacar Fall, Sara Ellinor Morack, Yigit Akin, Katja Füllberg, Mustafa Aksakal, Franziska Roy, Nazan Maksudyan, Howard Philip, Samiksha Sehrawat, Erik-Jan Zürcher, Keith Neilson, Ulrike Freitag, Santanu Das, Heike Liebau, Oliver Janz, Robert Gerwarth, Barbara Göbel, Shinichi Yamamuro, Akeo Okada, Britta Lange, Brigitte Reinwald, Jürgen Kocka, Katrin Bromber

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Economics of Immigration is written as a both a reference for researchers and as a textbook on the economics of immigration. It is aimed at two audiences: (1) researchers who are interested in learning more about how economists approach the study of human migration flows; and (2) graduate students taking a course on migration or a labor economics course where immigration is one of the subfields studied. The book covers the economic theory of immigration, which explains why people move across borders and details the consequences of such movements for the source and destination economies. The book also describes immigration policy, providing both a history of immigration policy in a variety of countries and using the economic theory of immigration to explain the determinants and consequences of the policies. This second edition reflects the growing importance of immigration as an economic, political, and social issue in the USA, the EU, Japan, and nearly all other developed and developing countries of the world.

From militant suffragette at the beginning of the twentieth century to campaigner against colonialism in Africa after the Second World War, Sylvia Pankhurst dedicated her life to fighting oppression and injustice. In this vivid biography Katherine Connelly examines Pankhurst's role at the forefront of significant developments in the history of radical politics. She guides us through Pankhurst's construction of a suffragette militancy which put working-class women at the heart of the struggle, her championing of the Bolshevik Revolution and her clandestine attempts to sabotage the actions of the British state, as well as her early identification of the dangers of Fascism. The book explores the dilemmas, debates and often painful personal consequences faced by Pankhurst which were played out in her art, writings and activism. It argues that far from being an advocate of disparate causes, Pankhurst's campaigns were united by an essential continuity which hold vital lessons for achieving social change. This lively and accessible biography presents Pankhurst as a courageous and inspiring campaigner, of huge relevance to those engaged in social movements today.

All the world seems to be on the move. So began Sheller and Urry s declaration of a new mobilities paradigm , a critique of what they called the sedentarism of contemporary social theory. In linguistic, literary and cultural studies, mobility and movement have been receiving increasing critical attention for at least two decades. On the move: mobilities in English language and literature seeks to harness some of this critique to explore how mobilities, both mundane and dramatic, are represented, narrated, performed and negotiated in literature and discourse, as well as the repercussions and consequences of mobility on language and dialect. Topics include literary negotiations of the movement of migrants, slaves, refugees and tourists; mobility as displacement; language and dialect contact that results from mobility and migration; discourse representations and constructions of people on the move; language in tourist, business, educational or diasporic encounters; movements between genres; second dialect/language acquisition of mobile individuals and groups; translation and adaptation.

Trichotillomania, Skin Picking, and Other Body-focused Repet American Psychiatric Publishin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Trichotillomania, skin picking, and other body-focused repetitive disorders are as common among the population as access to comprehensive clinical information is rare. Although research into habitual stereotypic movements, as they are also known, has accelerated in the last 10 years, no volume has yet presented a systematic review of clinical characteristics, diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment options. Until now. "Trichotillomania, Skin Picking, and Other Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors" provides clinicians, researchers, family members, and individuals who have these disorders with the cutting-edge, comprehensive resource they need to understand and address the problem. Coverage is detailed enough for the clinician, yet written in an accessible style to benefit patients and their families. Of special note are the separate sections for adults and children with these disorders, reflecting the distinct challenges of treating each group. Body-focused repetitive disorders cause a tremendous amount of distress and suffering. In addition to providing the most current, evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies, the authors emphasize the personal and social consequences patients face and make a persuasive case for more research, heightened physician awareness, and greater professional empathy in battling this often debilitating disorder.

Devil in History University Press Group Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Devil in History is a provocative analysis of the relationship between communism and fascism. Reflecting the authors personal experiences within communist totalitarianism, this is a book about political passions, radicalism, utopian ideals, and their catastrophic consequences in the twentieth centurys experiments in social engineering. The author discusses thinkers who have shaped contemporary understanding of totalitarian movements - people such as Hannah Arendt, Raymond Aron, Isaiah Berlin, Albert Camus, François Furet, Tony Judt, Ian Kershaw, Leszek Kolakowski, Richard Pipes, and Robert C. Tucker. As much a theoretical analysis of the practical philosophies of Marxism-Leninism and Fascism as it is a political biography of particular figures, this book deals with the incarnation of diabolically nihilistic principles of human subjugation and conditioning in the name of presumably pure and purifying goals.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, , course: Seminar, language: English, abstract: In this seminar paper I will analyze the diverse functions and forms of non-verbal communication (NVC). In addition, I will focus on business context.§§Business context in this paper means the realm of big companies with at least branches in two different cultures. Therefore, I have chosen five countries that Germany has a strong business interest in, and which have different socio-cultural frameworks: Saudi-Arabia, China, Japan, Russia, and Brazil.§§The proceeding in this paper is that after explanatory notes to functions and types of NVC, I will show a photo of one notable business representative of each of the five countries. Based on these photos, I will illustrate the characteristic features of NVC in the respective country. Differences to German NVC will be lined out with special hints to potential pitfalls, causing severe economic consequences.§§Finally, I will summarize the main issues of this paper, consider the results and come up with a conclusion.§§The sources used for this paper are not only scientifically proven literature. For the definition of NVC in general, long-established surveys of prominent academics are available, like I. Eibl-Eibesfeldt (Similarities and Differences between Cultures in Expressive Movements), and M. Argyle (Non-verbal Communication in Human Social Interaction). To be responsive to the business related task of this paper, I also draw on "how-to books", internet posts and a quality journal.

Environmental Change and its Implications for Population Migration Springer Netherlands

This volume provides an ample overview of state-of-the-art understanding of the multi-dimensional phenomenon of migration, in the characterisation of migration drivers, in environmental and agro-economic case studies and modelling issues as well as socio-political analyses. The analysis is geared to the consequences of climatic change, and the effects on soil, water and extreme weather that will drive populations to migrate.Environmental change in general, and climatic change in particular, are likely to impact significantly upon resources such as water and soils, transforming present day landscapes and their ecological characteristics. As a consequence, disruptions of socio-economic activities in sensitive regions of the globe can be expected in coming decades. Agriculture is at particular risk, especially in areas where prolonged droughts, sea level rise, enhanced natural hazards, or extreme meteorological events such as floods or mudslides threaten marginal existence. Disruptions and risks may have large effects on population migration. Conversely, large-scale movements of people, goods or capital may also disrupt local environments and further contribute to social problems. §This volume provides an ample overview of state-of-the-art understanding of the multi-dimensional phenomenon of migration, in the characterisation of migration drivers, in environmental and agro-economic case studies and modelling issues as well as socio-political analyses.

A Modern History of Tanganyika Cambridge University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This is the first comprehensive and fully documented history of modern Tanganyika (mainland Tanzania). After introductory chapters on the nineteenth century, Dr Iliffe concentrates on the colonial period, and especially on economic, social and intellectual change among Africans as the core of their colonial experience and the basis of their political behaviour. Particularl attention is paid to the consequences for small-scale societies of their incorporation into the international order; the impact of capitlaism and the emergence of capitalist relationships and attitudes; African attempts to defend or reform indigenous institutions and to organise movements of protest or revolt against European control; the successive formation and dissolution of a specifically colonial society; and the effects of economic change on Tanganyika's ecology in modern times. The book brings together the research which scholars of many nationalities have carried out in Tanzania over the last twenty years, and attempts to synthesise their findings with the evidence available from African and European records in Tanzania, Britain and Germany.
