Social movements have attracted much attention in recent years, both from scholars and among the wider public. This book examines the consequences of social movements, covering such issues as the impact of social movements on the life course of participants and the population in general, on political elites and markets, and on political parties and processes of social movement institutionalization. The volume makes a significant contribution to research on social movement outcomes in three ways: theoretically, by showing the importance of hitherto undervalued topics in the study of social movements outcomes; methodologically, by expanding the scientific boundaries of this research field through an interdisciplinary approach and new methods of analysis; and empirically, by providing new evidence about social movement outcomes from Europe and the United States.

Black Social Movements in Latin America PALGRAVE MACMILLAN

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This collection of essays aims to explore the transformations of the political landscapes within which Afro Latino social movements have been operating since the end of the 1970s. It is premised on the assertion that, distinctively in different national contexts, the major characteristic of these transformations has been the ideological alteration of the official narrative of national identity through the passage from 'monocultural mestizaje' and 'invisibilization' of Afro Latinos organized by the state and other dominant social actors to multiculturalism and state corporatism/cooptation. Every individual essay emphasizes the processes that led to the emergence of state corporatism/cooptation of Afro Latinos and their consequences on Afro Latino social movements. As many of the contributions show, these new situations have rendered Afro Latino political struggles more complex. Sometimes, as in the case of the Pacific Lowlands of Colombia, they have heightened to new levels of aggressiveness dominant socio-political actors' antagonism towards them.

Animal Rights Activism: A Moral-Sociological Perspective on Social Movements - 2854515801

Animal Rights Activism: A Moral-Sociological Perspective on Social Movements Amsterdam Univ Pr

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book develops a novel moral-sociological perspective on social movements. For the first time, Durkheim's sociology of morality is used for social movement theorizing. Nevertheless, Durkheim's approach is used as a basis for further theorization, including developing a deviance perspective on social movements. The moral-sociological framework is also useful for theorizing the role of moral reflexivity and emotion work among activists. Empirically, the analysis is based on a case-study of animal rights activists in Sweden. The animal rights movement challenges dominant moral conceptions and codes in a more fundamental way than perhaps any other contemporary movement. The book explores the consequences of this outsider position in the moral order in new and original ways. This book fills a gap in existing approaches to social movements by seeing social movements as essentially moral phenomena and by conceiving of morality as a social fact, which both enables and constrains the action that activists can pursue. By doing so, it complements existing more structural, cultural or strategic action-inspired approaches to social movements. In addition, the book richly illustrates how classical sociological theory can be used in new ways to understand contemporary societies.

Development and Social Change Sage Publications

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Explores development through historical narrative and examines the globalization/development paradox through in-depth case studies. In his Fifth Edition of Development and Social Change: A Global Perspective, author Philip McMichael examines the project of globalization and its instabilities (climate, energy, food, financial crises) through the lens of development and its origins in the colonial project. The book continues to help students make sense of a complex world in transition and explains how globalization became part of public discourse. Filled with case studies, this text makes the intricacies of globalization concrete, meaningful, and clear for students and moves them away from simple social evolutionary views, encouraging them to connect social change, development policies, global inequalities and social movements. The book challenges students to see themselves as global citizens whose consumption decisions have real social and ecological implications. Key Features: * a world-historical perspective that situates globalization in the declining fortunes of the postwar development project, and considers current global limits and possibilities * a political perspective that views development and globalization as discursive practices managed by historic elite groupings, as mechanisms of power and world ordering * an ecological perspective drawing attention to the environmental consequences of development and attempts to reintegrate social life in ecological cycles * an emphasis on resistance and social movements as actors shaping the meaning and direction of these projects, in addition to building alternatives * a series of case studies that allow in-depth examination of development/globalization dilemmas and paradoxes to interrupt the idea of a linear process. New to the Fifth Edition: * developmental impacts of the rise of the BRICS * structural adjustment and new inequalities come to the global North * 'de-growth' philosophies * the re-centering of agriculture in light of the food, energy and climate crises * land-grabbing and biofuels * green technologies and climate proofing * transition towns and re-localization * new democratic movements.

Challenging Social Inequality - 2854333124

Challenging Social Inequality Duke University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In Challenging Social Inequality, an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars and development workers explore the causes, consequences, and contemporary reactions to Brazil's sharply unequal agrarian structure. They focus on the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), Latin America's largest and most prominent social movement, and the ongoing efforts of the MST to confront historic patterns of inequality in the Brazilian countryside. Several essays provide essential historical background for understanding the MST. They examine Brazil's agrarian structure, state policies, and the formation of rural civil-society organizations. Other essays build on a frequently made distinction between the struggle for land and the struggle on the land. The first refers to the mobilization undertaken by landless peasants to demand government land redistribution. The struggle on the land takes place after the establishment of an official agricultural settlement. The main efforts during this phase are geared toward developing productive and meaningful rural communities. The last essays in the collection are wide-ranging analyses of the MST, which delve into the movement's relations with recent governments and its impact on other Brazilian social movements. In the conclusion, Miguel Carter appraises the future of agrarian reform in Brazil. Contributors: Jose Batista Goncalves Afonso, Sonia Maria Pessoa Pereira Bergamasco, Sue Branford, Elena Calvo-Gonzalez, Miguel Carter, Horacio Martins de Carvalho, Guilherme Costa Delgado, Bernardo Mancano Fernandes, Leonilde Servolo de Medeiros, George Meszaros, Luiz Antonio Norder, Gabriel Ondetti, Ivo Poletto, Marcelo Carvalho Rosa, Lygia Maria Sigaud, Emmanuel Wambergue, Wendy Wolford

Collective Emotions - 2854316478

Collective Emotions Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Although collective emotions have a long tradition in scientific inquiry, for instance in mass psychology and the sociology of rituals and social movements, their importance for individuals and the social world has never been more obvious than in the past decades. The Arab Spring revolution, the Occupy Wall Street movement, and mass gatherings at music festivals or mega sports events clearly show the impact collective emotions have both in terms of driving conflict and in uniting people. But these examples only show the most obvious and evident forms of collective emotions. Others are more subtle, although less important: shared moods, emotional atmospheres, and intergroup emotions are part and parcel of our social life. Although these phenomena go hand in hand with any formation of sociality, they are little understood. Moreover, there still is a large gap in our understanding of individual emotions on the one hand and collective emotional phenomena on the other hand. This book presents a comprehensive overview of contemporary theories and research on collective emotions. It spans several disciplines and brings together, for the first time, various strands of inquiry and up-to-date research in the study of collective emotions and related phenomena. In focusing on conceptual, theoretical, and methodological issues in collective emotion research, the volume narrows the gap between the wealth of studies on individual emotions and inquiries into collective emotions. The book catches up with a renewed interest into the collective dimensions of emotions and their close relatives, for example emotional climates, atmospheres, communities, and intergroup emotions. This interest is propelled by a more general increase in research on the social and interpersonal aspects of emotion on the one hand, and by trends in philosophy and cognitive science towards refined conceptual analyses of collective entities and the collective properties of cognition on the other hand. The book includes sections on: Conceptual Perspectives; Collective Emotion in Face-to-Face Interactions; The Social-Relational Dimension of Collective Emotion; The Social Consequences of Collective Emotions; Group-Based and Intergroup Emotion; Rituals, Movements, and Social Organization; and Collective Emotions in Online Social Systems. Including contributions from psychologists, philosophers, sociologists, and neuroscience, this volume is a unique and valuable contribution to the affective sciences literature.

Shining and Other Paths - 2854498485

Shining and Other Paths Duke University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Shining and Other Paths offers the first systematic account of the social experiences at the heart of the war waged between Shining Path and the Peruvian military during the 1980s and early 1990s. Confronting and untangling the many myths and enigmas that surround the war and the wider history of twentieth-century Peru, this book presents clear and often poignant analyses of the brutal reshaping of life and politics during a war that cost tens of thousands of lives. The contributors - a team of Peruvian and U.S. historians, social scientists, and human rights activists-explore the origins, social dynamics, and long-term consequences of the effort by Shining Path to effect an armed communist revolution. The book begins by interpreting Shining Path's emergence and decision for war as one logical culmination, among several competing culminations, of trends in oppositional politics and social movements. It then traces the experiences of peasants and refugees to demonstrate how human struggle and resilience came together in grassroots determination to defeat Shining Path, and explores the unsuccessful efforts of urban shantytown dwellers, as well as rural and urban activists, to build a "third path" to social justice. Integral to this discussion is an examination of women's activism and consciousness during the years of the crisis. Finally, this book analyses the often paradoxical and unintended legacies of this tumultuous period for social and human rights movements, and for presidential and military leadership in Peru. Extensive field research, broad historical vision, and strong editorial co-ordination enable the authors to write a coherent and deeply humanistic account, one that draws out the inner tragedies, ambiguities, and conflicts of the war. Providing historically grounded explication of the conflicts that reshaped contemporary Peru, Shining and Other Paths will be widely read by Latin Americanists, historians, anthropologists, gender theorists, sociologists, political scientists, and human rights activists. Problem of Slavery in the Age of Revolution, 1770-1823 Oxford University Press Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The author explores the international impact and social significance of antislavery thought in a critical era of political and industrial revolution. He examines the implications and historical consequences of challenging the long-accepted institution of slavery. The study not only provides a comparative account of early antislavery movements, but also uses the controversies over slavery to analyse shifting attitudes towards labour, social order, political representation, and the authority of law and religion. The focus is on the Anglo-American experience, but Davis makes illuminating comparisons with the history of slavery in France and Latin America. The book also offers portraits of important historical figures, including Thomas Jefferson, Granville Sharp, Bryan Edward, and Moreau de Saint-Mery, and accounts of key groups, movements, and bodies of literature. Through the history of slavery, Davis explores many areas of the social and intellectual history of the revolutionary era, creating a new reading of the entire age.

Cultures of Anyone - 2854354173

Cultures of Anyone Liverpool University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Cultures of Anyone studies the emergence of collaborative and non-hierarchical cultures in the context of the Spanish economic crisis of 2008. It explains how peer-to-peer social networks that have arisen online and through social movements such as the Indignados have challenged a longstanding cultural tradition of intellectual elitism and capitalist technocracy in Spain. From the establishment of a technocratic and consumerist culture during the second part of the Franco dictatorship to the transition to neoliberalism that accompanied the 'transition to democracy', intellectuals and 'experts' have legitimized contemporary Spanish history as a series of unavoidable steps in a process of 'modernization'. But when unemployment skyrocketed and a growing number of people began to feel that the consequences of this Spanish 'modernization' had increasingly led to precariousness, this paradigm collapsed. In the wake of Spain's financial meltdown of 2008, new 'cultures of anyone' have emerged around the idea that the people affected by or involved in a situation should be the ones to participate in changing it. Growing through grassroots social movements, digital networks, and spaces traditionally reserved for 'high culture' and institutional politics, these cultures promote processes of empowerment and collaborative learning that allow the development of the abilities and knowledge base of 'anyone', regardless of their economic status or institutional affiliations.

Issues in Pakistan's Economy Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book is about understanding Pakistan's structural transformation over six decades in a political economy framework. The author examines how and where such transformations have taken place, in the economy, society, in class and gender relations, in manifestations of consumerism and culture, and in other ways. He assesses Pakistan's trajectory of economic and political development, and focuses on an economic and social history of Pakistan, using a political economy framework to examine the nature of this structural transformation. This book follows the narrative of the evolution of Pakistan's social, economic and even political dispensation over many decades, highlighting key developments and events. As has happened so many times in Pakistan's history, unintended consequences have shaped developments. Yet, social and economic change has also been somewhat anticipated and predictable, giving rise to relatively more certain outcomes. The immense growth of urban populations, a middle class, and a buoyant informal sector, alongside the breakdown of state authority and of state institutions, have been unfolding almost expectedly. The previous trend of the 'urbanization of everybody', seems to have morphed into an 'urbanization with informalization', with the co-movements of urbanization and informal relations of production and exchange dominating social and political interactions. What this means for subsequent development remains uncertain. Issues in Pakistan's Economy: A Political Economy Perspective, will interest serious scholars of Pakistan's economic history and its developments, as well as those who seek to understand how social and economic processes have an impact on numerous outcomes and forms of structural transformation, and how state and society evolve in a political economy perspective.

The Devil in History is a provocative analysis of the relationship between communism and fascism. Reflecting the authors personal experiences within communist totalitarianism, this is a book about political passions, radicalism, utopian ideals, and their catastrophic consequences in the twentieth centurys experiments in social engineering. Vladimir Tismaneanu brilliantly compares communism and fascism as competing, sometimes overlapping, and occasionally strikingly similar systems of political totalitarianism. He examines the inherent ideological appeal of these radical, revolutionary political movements, the visions of salvation and revolution they pursued, the value and types of charisma of leaders within these political movements, the place of violence within these systems, and their legacies in contemporary politics.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

From militant suffragette at the beginning of the twentieth century to campaigner against colonialism in Africa after the Second World War, Sylvia Pankhurst dedicated her life to fighting oppression and injustice. In this vivid biography Katherine Connelly examines Pankhurst's role at the forefront of significant developments in the history of radical politics. She guides us through Pankhurst's construction of a suffragette militancy which put working-class women at the heart of the struggle, her championing of the Bolshevik Revolution and her clandestine attempts to sabotage the actions of the British state, as well as her early identification of the dangers of Fascism. The book explores the dilemmas, debates and often painful personal consequences faced by Pankhurst which were played out in her art, writings and activism. It argues that far from being an advocate of disparate causes, Pankhurst's campaigns were united by an essential continuity which hold vital lessons for achieving social change. This lively and accessible biography presents Pankhurst as a courageous and inspiring campaigner, of huge relevance to those engaged in social movements today.
