Norbert Burgmüller may have died at the tender age of 26, but during his short life he authored a significant number of works that have earned him a place among the foremost composers of the early 1800s. Among his admirers were Schumann and Mendelssohn, the former commenting on how, 'following Franz Schubert's death premature death, nothing could be more painful than Burgmüller's'.Indeed, Burgmüller compares most clearly to Schubert in the lieder repertory, with each composer opting for similar subject matter and poetic diom. Generally more contained and abstract in atmosphere than those of his contemporary's, the former's songs reveal styles that are typical of Schubert's compositions (especially Opp. 3, 6 and 10) but which anticipate the Austrian's later lieder through their daring modulations and close alliance between words and music. Culminating in the Frühlingslied -- a gem of a piece with a serene, spring-like atmosphere -- these songs give way to the final work on the disc, the Piano Sonata in F minor Op.8, whose first movement touches on Spohr's style and whose Finale is a model of virtuoso élan.Burgmüller may not exactly be a household name, but it is easy to see from this charming release why he is a composer who deserves more recognition. Eleonora Contucci and Costantino Mastroprimiano (a seasoned Brilliant Classics artist) perform with aplomb, the latter in full command of the wonderful Graf fortepiano -- one of only 60 surviving instruments by this foremost Viennese craftsman of the 19th century.Other information:- Recorded in the beautiful acoustics of the Villa Contucci in Montepulciano (2011 - 2012), by Eleonora Contucci, soprano, and veteran fortepianist Costantino Mastroprimiano, playing a superb Graf piano from 1826, since its build, in the possession of the Contucci family.- Norbert Burgmüller's early death in 1836 at the age of 26 was greatly lamented by his famous contemporaries Mendelssohn and Schumann, the latter comparing the tragedy of his death with that of Schubert. He was considered a major talent, and he left a substantial oeuvre of orchestral, vocal and instrumental works.- This CD features his songs, and the grand scale Piano Sonata in F minor Op. 8 in the style of Weber and Hummel. His songs remind us of Schubert in their freshness and naturalness, though not without personal touches in some of the more daring modulations.- Contains comprehensive booklet notes, sung texts, artist biographies and information on the Graf fortepiano (1826) used in the recording.

About "The Oval Portrait" of Edgar Allan Poe GRIN Verlag

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Essay from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Stuttgart, language: English, abstract: Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous and celebrated American writers whose short stories inspired numerous other authors. The Oval Portrait, initially titled Life in Death, is a revised and shorter version that was published in the Broadway Journal in 1845.Although being one of his shortest stories, Poe is able to establish in The Oval Portrait a haunting atmosphere of terror. The fate of the beautiful, young woman fascinates the narrator who is entirely taken by the enigmatic painting and the inscrutable circumstances of the lady's death. It is in this way that the author is able to create simultaneously a sense of both mystery and tragedy, and this essay will examine in greater detail howthese two elements are combined in order to make up the Gothic mood typical for Poe's writings.Firstly, I will have a look at the author and his background before providing some general information about this short story. In this case, a biographical approach to The Oval Portrait is very enriching and is able to shed light on some aspects, as we will see later on. Secondly, I will concentrate on the appearance of the mysterious atmosphere in the work, such as the narrator's equivocal reliability, the mansion and its relation to the Gothic, the role of light and darkness, and the open questions. My third point of analysis will be the tragic: how is Poe able tomake both the story's narrator and his readers be captivated by such a sad woman's death withinless than four pages? To begin with, I will focus on the painter and his obsession with his art, aswell as the dilemma whether the latter is inevitably irreconcilable with life. Then the woman'soutward appearance, that is her surpassing loveliness, will be linked to what Poe himself saysabout the role of beauty and horror in his work Philosophy of Composition.Furthermore, James Twitchell's interpretation of The Oval Portrait will be taken into account.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Penguin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"The Penguin Classics" edition of Anne Bronte's "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall", her groundbreaking study of a woman's valiant struggle for independence from an abusive husband is edited with an introduction and notes by Stevie Davis. Gilbert Markham is deeply intrigued by Helen Graham, a beautiful and secretive young woman who has moved into nearby Wildfell Hall with her young son. He is quick to offer Helen his friendship, but when her reclusive behaviour becomes the subject of local gossip and speculation, Gilbert begins to wonder whether his trust in her has been misplaced. It is only when she allows Gilbert to read her diary that the truth is revealed and the shocking details of the disastrous marriage she has left behind emerge. Told with great immediacy, combined with wit and irony, "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is a powerful depiction of a woman's fight for domestic independence and creative freedom. In her introduction Stevie Davies discusses "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" as feminist testament, inspired by Anne Bronte's experiences as a governess and by the death of her brother Branwell Bronte, and examines the novel's language, biblical references and narrative styles. Anne Bronte (1820-1849), youngest of the Bronte sisters, was born at Thornton, West Yorkshire. Her father was a curate, and her mother died when she was a baby, leaving five daughters and one son. After the death of her sisters Maria and Elizabeth from tuberculosis in 1825, the Bronte children were homeschooled, and together they created fantasy worlds and kingdoms which they explored in writing. Anne worked as a governess between 1840 and 1845, after which she published "Agnes Grey" (1847) and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" (1848) under the pen-name Acton Bell. Anne Bronte died in 1849. If you enjoyed "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" you might also like Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence", also available in "Penguin Classics".

This book is a more personal history than has ever before been written by or about Marianne Faithfull. Anecdotal, conversational, intimate and revealing, this is her no-holds-barred account of her life, her friends, her triumphs and mistakes. A decade after the publication of 'Faithfull', one of the most acclaimed rock autobiographies of all time, Marianne Faithfull is back, vowing periodically leave her wicked ways behind and grow up, but finding that somehow strange things keep happening. A wry observer of her slightly off-kilter world, Marianne muses nostalgically about afternoons languishing on Moroccan cushions at George and Pattie's, getting high and listening to new songs. She fondly recalls the outlandish antics of her Beat friends Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs; is frequently baffled at her image in the press (opening the paper to read of her own demise: 'Sixties Star in Death Plunge'); terrified by the curse sent by Kenneth Anger; mortified by her history of reckless behaviour; not to mention her near-death experience in Singapore while looking for an opium den. Marianne peoples her anecdotal memoir with legendary characters one can imagine only Marianne assembling around her, both the eccentric and the beautiful, from Henrietta Moraes and Donatella Versace to Sofia Coppola, Juliette Greco, and Yves St. Laurent's dog. Here is Marianne on the dark side of the sixties and the bright side of the nineties, which saw her collaborating with the likes of Blur and Jarvis Cocker; compelling recollections of an unconventional childhood in her father's orgiastic literary commune to a hilariously decadent few days at Lady Caroline Blackwood's deathbed. Here she is her blossoming movie career, on her records as subliminal autobiography. This is as intimate a portrait as we've ever had of Marianne, as she meditates on sex and drugs, confronts her alter-ego, the Fabulous Beast, and faces her own mortality in her battle with breast cancer. Since her last book Marianne has, in her own words, 'made quite a few records, gone on many tours, tried to play it straight, and...Well, the rest is the subject of this book.'

Women's sexual liberation from victorian patriarchy in Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla GRIN Verlag

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, printed single-sided, grade: 1,7, University of Marburg (Institute for English and American Studies), course: Blood, Lust and (Un)Death: Vampires in American and British Cultures, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Carmilla is the concluding story of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu s horror story collection In a Glass Darkly which was published in 1872. Carmilla does not simply complete this collection but raises the topic of lesbianism and thus conveys the most provocative idea of all preceding texts. Considering the extreme prudery prevailing during the Victorian age, the publication of Carmilla represented a real scandal ignoring the severe, moral restrictions of that time. Women were not understood as sexual beings and moreover, homosexuality was a term people were absolutely ignorant of. An erotic relationship with a partner of the same sex was a thing people could not think or dared not to think of. Among others McCormack states, We begin with a pious clergyman and end with lesbianism, the offence Queen Victoria found unbelievable. (McCormack 154). Nevertheless or even because of this, Carmilla is Le Fanu s best remembered work and considered one of the most influential texts of English vampire literature. It is not without reason that Carmilla served Bram Stoker as an inspiration for his novel Dracula which has been the most popular piece of vampire literature until today. Carmilla is set in Styria with no apparent hint when it takes place. The two protagonists Laura and Carmilla are both young girls whose relationship becomes more and more erotic as the story proceeds. Together with her father and a few servants, Laura lives very isolated in the family s castle with no surroundings but forest for miles. She is more than happy to have finally found a companion in the beautiful Carmilla. Carmilla who turns out to be a vampire seduces Laura and loftily confesses her love to Laura more than once. While the reader is aware of Carmilla s nature quite early, Laura ignores the obvious until the very end. Laura has ambiguous feelings for her female lover. On the one hand she feels drawn towards her; on the other hand she has a revulsion against Carmilla s strange behaviour. During the process of Laura being vampirized, she becomes weaker every day and more and more similar to Carmilla. Laura s father watches this proceeding sorrowfully without being able to help it. §In the following, I will show that Laura s devotion to Carmilla exercised through the vampiric act can be read as a female escape from patriarchal chains. The male characters that all play minor roles lose control of the events and are powerless against the unknown enchantment Carmilla radiates.

This is a beautiful piece of historical fiction with great heart and humanity. "What kind of a girl steals the clothes from a dead man's back and runs off to join the army? A desperate one. That's who." At the end of the American Civil War, Charley - a young African-American slave from the deep south - is ostensibly freed. But then her adopted mother is raped and lynched at the hands of a mob and Charley is left alone. In a terrifyingly lawless land, where the colour of a person's skin can bring violent death, Charley disguises herself as a man and joins the army. Soon she's being sent to the prairies to fight a whole new war against the "savage Indians". Trapped in a world of injustice and inequality, it's only when Charley is posted to Apache territory that she begins to learn what it is to be truly free. It is written by the author of Mondays are Murder which won the 2010 Red House Children's Book Award and The Goldsmith's Daughter, which was nominated for the 2008 Guardian Children's fiction prize. Tanya Landman writes with great authority about this part of US history - her first novel on the subject, Apache, was nominated for the 2008 Carnegie Medal. As in Apache, Tanya Landman has an extraordinary ability to imagine what it's like to be one of society's outcasts.

History of Clan Campbell Polygon at Edinburgh University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Clan Campbell has long been among the largest of the Scottish highland clans as well as arguably the most powerful. Apart from the intrinsic interest of the clan Campbell, its history is inseparable from the history of Scotland. This is the first of three volumes that will tell the full history of the clan in a depth never before attempted. The book opens with an investigation of the myths and legends that surround the traditional accounts of the origin of the clan together with a description of the wild and beautiful land of Argyll in which they settled and built up their power-base. Although already of some substance elsewhere in Scotland, the Campbells had to work hard to establish themselves among more powerful neighbours. Chief among these were Somerled's descendants, the MacDougall Lords of Argyll by whom Sir Cailean Mor Campbell was slain at the String of Lorne in 1296. When Sir Cailean Mor's cousin Robert the Bruce rewarded his loyal Campbell followers he set them on the road to success. The road was by no means a direct one: after the King's death his enemies regained much of the land he transferred to the clan. But the Campbells were by now established as a counterweight to the increasingly wayward Lords of the Isles and over the years their loyalty to the Crown was rewarded by major grants of lands and offices. These allowed the clan to flourish and to extend itself over broad areas of Scotland. As this volume closes the house of Lochawe has emerged as the chiefly line while nearly all the major branches of the clan have become established, notably the Houses of Loudoun, Glenorchy (later Breadalbane) and Cawdor. This volume ends with the defeat of the Scottish army at Flodden where the Campbell chief together with Campbell of Glenorchy and many of the leading Campbells fell alongside their King. The story of how the clan restored its position will be the subject of Volume 2. The book is illustrated with ten maps, a genealogy, and twenty pages of plates (four in colour). Substantial appendices explain the structure of the clan and its septs and include a definitive account of the clan tartan. *The most in-depth and authoritative history of the Clan Campbell available *Builds to a handsome 3-volume hardback set *Fully endorsed by the Clan Campbell *Illustrated throughout with maps, genealogies, and plates (4 in colour) *Includes six substantial appendices with a full genealogical analysis of the Clan *Features a definitive account of the Clan's tartans

'The Picture of Dorian Gray' and the Aesthetic Movement in England at the Turn of the Century GRIN Verlag

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: Proseminar B: London Past and Present: Literary and Cultural Heritage of a Metropolis, 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: There are some famous writers at the end of the 19th century who are often mentioned as decadent . They have asserted the superiority of beauty and pleasure over all other considerations. Oscar Wilde s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray presents the aestheticism and the hedonist way of living. The novel anticipates developments and structures of society of that time. The importance of Dorian s experiences refutes the decadent theories which are described in the Yellow Book that enthralls the protagonist. The novel as a whole can be seen as a psychological study which analyzes the gradual debasement of Dorian s nature. At the end of the story he is responsible for every vice and crime including murder. §The author shows that on the one hand pleasure and beauty are the highest goods, on the other hand he argues that they also bring death and crime. The task of this research paper is to analyze the mentioned contradiction and the influence of the Aesthetic movement on the novel as well as Oscar Wilde s view of art. §I would like to begin with a brief survey of the social and intellectual background at the end of the 19th century, exploring the major art movements of that time and how far they affect Wilde s work. Afterwards his main principles of Aestheticism and their reflection in the novel are analyzed as well as Dorian s life under the influence of the hedonist model. §Oscar Wilde s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray reveals the contradictions of Wilde s relationship with the decadent trends of that time. He adopts and proclaims their esthetical and literary views, but the flippant amoralism that he sometimes parades so defiantly is belied by the final catastrophe descending upon his hero as a result of his obvious moral degradation. The novel shows that man s chief purpose in life can not be seeking pleasure. To be good is more important than to be beautiful. Though in the preface to his novel Oscar Wilde declares that all art is quite useless, the novel itself proves the opposite. The tension between the aesthetic (Art) and the moral (Life) is the focus of the novel. In setting a portrait, a work of art, at the center of the action, Wilde affects the interplay of natural perception and moral judgment in the novel. §The ideal of art for art s sake was proclaimed by Wilde but hardly ever consistently put into practice.
