Selections from the Poems of Thomas Gray (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Selections From the Poems of Thomas Gray Thomas Gray was born in Cornhill, London, December 26, 1716. His father, Philip Gray, was a scrivener and broker, a man of violent temper and jealous disposition, with some symptoms of madness. He abandoned his family, and died abroad, leaving but little of his reputed wealth. His mother was Dorothy Antrobus Gray, most touchingly described by the poet, in the inscription placed on her tombstone, as "the tender mother of many children, one of whom alone had the misfortune to survive her." The other eleven children died in infancy. Mrs. Gray supported her son by keeping, with her sister, a millinery shop in London, and it was altogether through her care and industry that Gray enjoyed the advantages of education. In 1727 he was sent to Eton College, under the auspices of his two uncles, Robert and Thomas Antrobus, the former of whom was assistant to a master of Eton, and a fellow of Peter-house College, and the latter a fellow of King's College, Cambridge. At Eton he met Horace Walpole, son of the prime minister, with whom he formed a friendship that lasted, with a slight interruption, while they both lived, and that was of immense advantage to the future poet. Dramatic Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 2 of 4 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Dramatic Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 2 of 4: Including Manfred, Cain, Doge of Venice, Sardanapalus, and the Two Foscari, Together With His Hebrew Melodies and Other Poems Manfred alone. - Scene a Gothic Gallery. - Time Midnight. Man. The lamp must be replenish'd, but even then It will not burn so long as I must watch: My slumbers - if I slumber - are not sleep, But a continuance of enduring thought, Which then I can resist not: in my heart There is a vigil, and these eyes but close To look within; and yet I live, and bear The aspect and the form of breathing men. But grief should be the instructor of the wise; Sorrow is knowledge: they who know the most Must mourn the deepest o'er the fatal truth, The Tree of Knowledge is not that of Life. Philosophy and science, and the springs Of wonder, and the wisdom of the world, I have essay'd, and in my mind there is A power to make these subject to itself - But they avail not: I have done men good. And I have met with good even among men - But this avail'd not: I have had my foes. And none have baffled, many fallen before me - But this avail'd not: - Good, or evil, life. Powers, passions, all I see in other beings. Have been to me as rain unto the sands. Since that all-nameless hour. I have no dread, And feel the curse to have no natural fear. Nor fluttering throb, that beats with hopes or wishes, Or lurking love of something on the earth. - Now to my task. - About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Gladys the Singer: And Other Poems I knew thee first as one may know the fame Of some apostle, as a man may know The mid-day sun far-shining o'er the snow. I hail'd thee prince of poets! I became Vassal of thine, and warm'd me at the flame Of thy pure thought, my spirit all aglow With dreams of peace, and pomp, and lyric show, And all the splendors, Browning t of thy name. But now, a man reveal'd, a guide for men, I see thy face, I clasp thee by the hand; And though the Muses in thy presence stand, There's room for me to loiter in thy ken. O lordly soul! O wizard of the pen! What news from God? What word from Fairyland? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Skylark and Adonais Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Skylark and Adonais: With Other Poems And so we have come back at last to our original Shelley - to the Shelley of the lovely and well-known picture, to the Shelley with flushed, feminine, artless face, the Shelley "blushing like a girl" of Trelawny. Professor Dowden gives us some further attempts at portraiture. One by a Miss Rose, of Shelley at Marlow. "He was the most interesting figure I ever saw; his eyes like a deer's, bright and rather wild; his white throat unfettered; his slender but, to me, almost faultless shape; his brown long coat with curling lambs' wool collar and cuffs - in fact, his whole appearance - are as fresh in my recollection as an occurrence of yesterday." Feminine enthusiasm may be deemed suspicious, but a Captain Kennedy must surely be able to keep his head. Captain Kennedy was quartered at Horsham in 1813, and saw Shelley when he was on a stolen visit, in his father's absence, at Field Place: "He received me with frankness and kindliness, as if he had known me from childhood and at once won my heart. I fancy I see him now as he sat by the window, and hear his voice, the tones of which impressed me with his sincerity and simplicity. His resemblance to his sister Elizabeth was as striking as if they had been twins. His eyes were most expressive, his complexion beautifully fair, his features exquisitely fine; his hair was dark, and no peculiar attention to its arrangement was manifest. In person he was slender and gentlemanlike, but inclined to stoop; his gait was decidedly not military. The general appearance indicated great delicacy of constitution. One would at once pronounce of him that he was different from other men. There was an earnestness in his manner and such perfect gentleness of breeding and freedom from everything artificial, as charmed every one. I never meta man who so immediately won upon me. "Mrs. Gisborne's son, who knew Shelley well at Leghorn, declared Captain Kennedy's description of him to be "the best and most truthful I have ever seen". Excerpt from Lesbia: And Other Poems The Vampire Intolerable woman, where's the name For your insane complexity of shame? Vampire! white bloodless creature of the night, Whose lust of blood has blanched her chill veins white, Veins fed with moonlight over dead men's tombs; Whose eyes remember many martyrdoms, So that their depths, whose depth cannot be found, Are shadowed pools in which a soul lies drowned; Who would fain have pity, but she may not rest Till she have sucked a man's heart from his breast, And drained his life-blood from him, vein by vein, And seen his eyes grow brighter for the pain, And his lips sigh her name with his last breath, As the man swoons ecstatically on death. A Doll's House Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from A Doll's House: And Two Other Plays Having, by his uncompromising independence of temperament, made Norway too hot to hold him, Ibsen became a voluntary exile in 1864, and did not return to his own country (save for two brief visits) till some five and twenty years afterwards. The first four of these years were spent in Italy, the others mainly in Germany. The effect of a wider life was not long in making itself evident. From Italy Brand and Peer Gynt, two magnificent dramatic poems, came in successive years to astonish Ibsen's compatriots and make him famous. The long demanded pension could no longer be with held, and Ibsen's time of penury was over. In 1877 he began to write the series of prose plays on which his wider reputation rests, the last of them being published in 1900, when their author was an old man of seventy-two. They are intended as an essential story, or history, or confession, unfolding one from the other in organic development, the whole revealing the intrinsic experience of a man during the crisis of manhood, when he marries and comes into himself. Excerpt from Apollo and Marsyas: And Other Poems Introduction. The contest of the Satyr with the God, Oh who shall end it? Who shall end the strife That fills all Art, all Nature and all Life, And give the right of flaying with a nod? Oh who when radiant noontide's last note dies, And darkness with its mystery draws near, Shall bid the strains of twilight not arise That fill the soul with wistfulness or fear? Man gives his love in turn, he knows not why, To sun or gloom according to his mood; His ear, his heart, alternately is woo'd By Nature's carol or by Nature's sigh. And Marsyas' reed-pipe and Apollo's lyre Make endless competition upon earth, As men prefer the charm of vague desire, Or charm of bright serenity and mirth. Excerpt from The Fair Evanthe: A Poem in Five Cantos; And Other Poems In the following Poem, it has been the Author's aim to describe much that is beautiful, graceful, excellent, and holy in woman. In fact, he has wished to depict "the fair Evanthe" as only "a little lower than the angels;" while, in Henry de Crichton, he has aimed at exhibiting "a model man." How far he has succeeded in doing so, it is not (of course) for him to determine. Should he have fallen short in his undertaking, he hopes the "gentle" Reader will be disposed to make every reasonable allowance, considering the scope and difficulty of the design.
