Man Who Saw, and Other Poems Arising Out of the War (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Man Who Saw, and Other Poems Arising Out of the War Has had the experience, so painful to a patriotic man, of differing from the majority of his countrymen on the moral issues involved in certain large and complex questions of international or imperial policy. In both cases he recorded his views and feelings very unambiguously in verse, incurring not a little odium and losing some friends. In both cases public opinion has since moved round into a position fundamentally much nearer his own than it had at first occupied. During the present war, with all its agonies and horrors, he has had at any rate the one private satisfaction of feeling not even the most momentary doubt or misgiving as to the perfect righteousness of his country's cause. There is nothing on earth of which he is more certain than that this Empire, throughout this supreme ordeal, has shaped her course by the light of purest duty. Her way has been the way of the just; and even if it be arguable that a base expediency would have dictated another path - even if it be held that byż preface. Excerpt from Cornish Ballads Other Poems Robert Stephen Hawker, more than forty years Vicar of Morwenstow, Cornwall, was born at Plymouth, December 3, 1803. His father, Jacob Stephen Hawker, then a medical man, subsequently took Holy Orders and became successively Curate and Vicar of Stratton, a town situated eight miles from Morwenstow. Robert Stephen Hawker, as early as 1821, the year before he entered Pembroke College, Oxford, published anonymously, at Cheltenham, his first poems, "Tendrils by Reuben," which have been appended to the present Collection of his Poetical Works. In November, 1823, he married Charlotte Eliza, one of the four daughters of Colonel Wrey I'Ans, of Whitstone House, near Bude Haven, Cornwall. Excerpt from Poems of the Turf and Other Ballads The Race For A Life ... Or The Feat Of Tecumseh When the weather's down to zero, in most every country town, It's in the store or hostlery that the talkers gather 'round; One fact I've always noted, - happens nine times out of ten, - That horse talk seems to take the lead among all sorts of men. There're some you hate to listen to - you wish they'd not begun; You yawn and draw a good long breath when their tiresome yarn is spun. And then there're others that you'd sit and listen to all night - Somehow they interest you in a way you seem to like. This was the case the other night at Sherman's new Hotel - The horsemen they had gathered in and soon commenced to tell About what they had seen and done so wonderful, you know. But soon the crowd began to yawn, and said they'd better go. Just then Ben Saunders opened up, - old Ben was seventy-two, But when he told a story, you bet we'd hear him through! - So, when Ben started up and said, "If it wasn't late, you know, I'd tell you of a scrape I had some fifty years ago!" That settled it: we all just vowed the story he must tell. I'll give you all the facts he told, but I can't tell them quite so well. I told you Ben was seventy-two - he didn't look it, though, Although his hair and whiskers were as white as driven snow. He was straight as any arrow; his eye was clear and mild, With a roguish kind of twinkle, like some little, happy child. I have watched all kinds of people and have studied many men, But I never yet have meta man that equaled Uncle Ben. Excerpt from The Flag and Other Poems: 1918 The British Lands. The tie that binds the British lands Is never spun of tyrant's might; Of fair replies to just demands, Of compromise whenever right Is spun the fibre of its strands, A mighty Empire to unite. A symbol is our gracious King Of British unity of heart, A simple man to whom we cling, Of all good men the counterpart. We sing to God to "Save the King," And mean thereby ourselves in part. The people of the British lands Are masters of their future fate, By effort of their mind and hands They glorify their Empire State, And, as the bud of thought expands, Can make new laws by calm debate. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Kaatskill and Other Poems The Author of the following poems died in March of the present year, at the age of forty-six. Some of them were written almost in boyhood; among these are the "Lines to a Human Skull" and "Kaatskill," which, though among his earliest productions, are marked by an originality of thought, and vigor of imagination, which can not fail to impress the reader. The "Lines to Frinket" (a pet name for his youngest boy) were enclosed in a letter, hurriedly written only a month before his decease, and give evidence of the brightness and elasticity of his spirit, under the severest and most protracted physical suffering. The present collection comprises only a portion of his poems. Mr. Roosevelt was educated for the Bar, and, for many years practised with great success, winning the highest reputation for integrity and soundness of judgment. He was no ordinary man: a graduate of Columbia College, possessed of fine talents, a severe student and well grounded in the principles of the law, he never sought the applause of the multitude through sensational litigation, preferring such juridical arenas, as required extensive research and studious investigation. Asia had no name till man was old And long had learned the use of iron and gold; And ćons had passed, when the first corn was planted, Since first the use of syllables was granted. Men were on earth while climates slowly swung, Fanning wide zones to heat and cold, and long Subsidence turned great continents to sea, And seas dried up, dried up interminably, Age after age; enormous seas were dried Amid wastes of land. Excerpt from A Chant of Love for England and Other Poems Let Pride with Grief go hand in hand: They join the hallowed hosts who died In battle for their lovely land; With light about their brows they ride Young hearts and hot, gray heads and wise, Good knights of all the years foregone, Faith in their England in their eyes, Still ride they on, still ride they on! By altars old their banners fade Beneath dear spires; their names are set In minster aisle, in yew-tree shade; Their memories fight for England yet. Let Pride with Grief go hand in hand, Sad Love with Patience, side by side; In battle for their lovely land Not vainly England's sons have died! And well may pride this hour befit; for not since England's days began More fiery-clear the word was writ: Who dies for England, dies for Man! Excerpt from Truth: And Other Poems Truth. Truly, the measure of all things is Man; But Man is measured by the One and All, Man is a microcosm, and he grows Unto the stature of full manhood, only When to the One and All his soul responds. There is a gauge that measures man, a norm By which the truth that's in him must be tested. 'Tis the Eternal in the change of time, It is the Law within the macrocosm, The Uniformity pervading things, It is the One in this great All, - 'tis God! Mind you, 'tis Man, not men, that measures things; Not I, not you, nor any other being; Man only, Man alone. And what is Man? Man is the type of Mankind, - men's ideal. "Are not ideals purely visionary, Mere thought construction of what ought to be Mere fictions of an idle brain?" Excerpt from Star-Dust "The Flagship. By Trevor Blakemore. (Cloth, 97 pp. Erskine MacDonald. 4s. 6d. net.) The war poems strike a deep and a true note. Not content with shouting about the obvious, they reveal the inward causes and speak of the larger issues of the great conflict. They are entitled to a place among the few worthy poems that have been written on the war. Mention must be made of the charming love lyrics of which Oblivion is a beautiful example, so gay as it is, and fragrant with earth-sweetness. Indeed, perhaps Mr. Blakemore's power of calling up vivid pictures of various aspects of nature is his most striking quality." "Apropos of Sir Sidney Colvin's recent lecture on Suggestion and Condensation in Poetry" and of the emphasis he laid on Keats unrivalled power of vivid Nature description it is interesting to note Mr. Blakemore's gifts in this respect." - The Poetry Review "We welcome another volume of verses by Trevor Blakemore, who has already gained a niche among the younger Georgian poets. "The Flagship" - the title of the book is taken from the first poem is hardly an index to the character of Mr. Blakemore's poems - which carry us for the most part down sylvian and idyllic paths, far from the stress of war. But the most notable work, the poem called "Intercession," which appeared in the Times, deals with the all-absorbing topic. It has a note of inspiration, which marks it as a considerable achievement. The other poems deal with man and nature in varying moods, and Mr. Blakemore in "Sark" and in "Harbour Bells" shows that he possesses the true vision of the sea and "land-locked bays." - Westminster Gazette. War Verse (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from War Verse This is by no means the first collection of poems of the great war; and it is certain that it will not be the last. If it has one outstanding characteristic which distinguishes it from other collections, it is that the material for it is not the result of a quest among volumes of verse, and only to a slight degree is it the work of the recognized poets. It owes its origin to the fact that the Editor has been a close reader of the English journals, magazines and reviews since August, 1914, and has been increasingly impressed with the fine quality of the war verse contributed by writers unknown or little known. The spirit rather than the form of this verse carries its appeal to the reader. It is not the work of professional verse writers who have seen in the events of the war stirring and timely literary material; but, to a large extent, it is the spontaneous expression of sincere feeling, - the feeling of the soldier in the trenches, waiting for the order to go "over the top" the next morning, and thinking of home, of England, of Oxford, or of the crocuses of Nottingham, or the feeling of the wounded man in the hospital or of the nurse who cares for him. In not a few instances, the poems, when printed, have borne, under the name of the writer, the inscription "Killed in action," which has given the lines the peculiar poignancy of a message from a man who has fought his last fight, and has done it without fear or faltering. Excerpt from Avenging the Maine: A Drunken A. B., And Other Poems I do not deem it necessary to write a preface to these few poems, but, somehow, I have a tender feeling for this little book that is about to be sent out into the world, to bear such an humble burden as my feeble thought. I do not know but I believe that if this book could speak it would sternly refuse to go on such an humble mission; but, since I have imposed upon it this duty, knowing the many censuring critics it may have to encounter, I believe it my duty to say a word, for the very book's sake, that may cause the censuring tongue of man to wag less swiftly First. I must say that these poems were written under very unfavorable circumstances. Dignity may not allow me to explain, but I will say that they were composed during my leisure time, which has been limited. I say leisure time - no, I have none; I should have said sacrificed time, time when the body was almost exhausted from manual labor, when recreation was greatly needed; and you who know what a struggle the mind has battling with an exhausted body in trying to perform such a task as this can easily allow for this feeble result. The mind can not work when the body is exhausted, and I assure you that I would not have written one line had Nature not forced me to do so. Often at my work-bench, when I thought greater speed was needed to finish my daily task. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Monogamy: A Series of Dramatic Lyrics This dedication, however, is not written about our love and admiration for you. Here would be no place to express those emotions, even I had words to express them, and even there were any necessity to express them in words at all. But, smce my observation of man as a reading animal has led me to believe that, for one reader who will tolerate a preface, ten will tolerate a dedication, I want to incor porate here an explanation of what these poems are, and why they were written. In the first place, they are not PR 0p1 Gd N Dd Didactic poetry is, doubtless, an admir able thmg, but the whole of these poems of mine will be mis taben they are sup posed to be didactic. They are, simply and solely, dramatic lyrics. In each one of th em a husband speahs, and speahs of his married life. But I want to mahe clear that no such argument is intended as: These cases of monogamy are failures: therefore monogamy is a failure. Like every other human benzg, I have opinions about marriage as an institution: only I defy anyone to tell from these pages what that opinion is.
