Powieści i opowiadania

'When people ask me what I do for a crust and I tell them that I'm a novelist, they immediately assume that my life is a non-stop carousel of limos, television appearances, hair-dos, devoted fans, stalkers and all the glitzy paraphernalia of being a public figure. It's time to set the record straight. I write alone, in a darkened bedroom, wearing my PJs, eating bananas, my laptop on a pillow in front of me ...' Cherished and Shared of Old (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Cherished and Shared of Old Dutch children she'd taken into her home. They were warm now at night - not wan dering on a road. They weren't hungry now - mercy no, she'd seen to that, but what are they thinking, she'd wonder, as at times they'd sit there so gravely. She wished they'd do more things they shouldn't, for when you're too good you must be a little afraid. She hadn't been able to stand the pic tures in the papers - so many tired chil dren wanting to get back home. Her daughter Emmey, in the East, was work ing for little ones who had been turned out into the world. Mother dear, she wrote, I can't get home this Christmas just can't. But I could send you two children for whom you could make a Christmas - the way you used to for me and Jack. You'll be so sorry for Johanna and Piet, and come to love them; perhaps you'll want them to stay on there with you in our old home. There were always children on the Morrison place. So once more there were children on the old Morrison place, but could she make a happy Christmas for this little girland boy bereft of their own? She could say Merry Christmas, but could she make their hearts glad? And what is Christmas if there is not warmth within? Happy may it be through all the frosty winter days, the breezy March, the budding spring-time, and the blossoming summer, - happy through the golden autumn days, and happy through the Christmas month, to the very end! How can it be made truly happy? May it not by walking hand in hand with the beautiful angel. Love? Love will make us wish nothing so much as to please our kind heavenly Father who loves us and watches over every moment of our lives. Love will make us gentle and helpful to every one about us, and kind to every living thing. Let us ask God to send the Love-angel to walk at our side, and we shall surely have a happy year. The Child And The Year. Said the child to the youthful year, "What hast thou in store for me, O giver of beautiful gifts, - what cheer, What joy dost thou bring with thee?" "My seasons four shall bring Their treasures; the Winter's snows. The Autumn's store and the flowers of Spring, And the Summer's perfect rose. Merry's Museum and Woodworth's Cabinet, Vol. 53 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Merry's Museum and Woodworth's Cabinet, Vol. 53 Their real names are Maggie and Marianna, but their Uncle John, with whom they are great pets, has always called them by the names that seem so funny to you. This Uncle John of theirs has no children of his own, but over since they were born he has kept the warmest corner of his heart for his twin nieces. When they were babies, and lay side by side in the cradle, he called one Sunny-hair, because tiny curls as fine and as yellow as sunshine hung all around her little face; and the other Night-eyes, because her great black eyes sparkled, so he used to say, as if they were full of stars. They are nine years old now, but he seems to love them better than ever. You must have met their Uncle John on the street sometimes - a great, cheerful fellow with a smile that would cure anybody of the blues, a ringing laugh, and a stout arm always ready to pick up an apple that has tumbled off the stand of the old woman on the corner, or to lift up the horse that has fallen down under his heavy load. But I don't intend now to write about Uncle John, or to give you a history of his little nieces; I can only tell what happened last New Year's morning. Christmas had passed away very pleasantly. Santa Claus had been unusually kind, and our little girls had more presents than they had dreamed of - enough, they thought, to make them happy for a whole year. After all the rest had made their presents, Uncle John came, late in the afternoon, and made them a very strange one. He gave each of the little girls a dollar, and told them to buy as much happiness as that money would bring! They did not know what to think of it. What did Uncle John mean? They talked it over through the day, and at night, after they wore in bed, it kept their little tongues at work until mamma called out to them to go to sleep. So it was in the morning, and again at night, all through the week. What would make them happiest? They might buy more dolls, and more books, and toys, and candies of all sorts; but papa and mamma, when they were asked, thought that their little ones had enough of these already. Besides, there was only one thing that they really wished to have, and it would take five times as much to buy the two big dolls and the big bedstead in Mr. Milton's stove. Should they save it up? That would certainly be a better thing than to spend it foolishly, but it would not buy them any happiness. They must spend it, before they could buy anything with it. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Little Prudy To the little public: A Merry Christmas, dear Children! You who have read of Prudy Parlin, in the "Congregationalist" and "Little Pilgrim," and have learned to love her there, may love her better in a book by herself, with pictures. To you who never saw her before, we will introduce her now. It is easy to feel acquainted with Prudy; for she is, as you will find, a very talkative little lady. There is no end of things which might be told of Susy, Grace, and Horace; and if you wish to hear more about them, you have only to wait a little while. God is sending us another year as fresh and clean as the purest paper. Let us thank Him for it, and try to write it over with kind thoughts and good deeds; then it will be for all of us A Happy New Year! Friendship's Offering, And, Winter's Wreath Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Friendship's Offering, And, Winter's Wreath: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1835 Absorbing to engross the whole attention, and to fill the whole soul; and where beyond the circle of home can an affectionate child look for wisdom to direct, and for affection to bless? Thus these two felt mutually de pendent ou each other. They were sincere in their mutual thought, and happy in the sincerity of it; the father that no daughter was like unto his, and the daughter that no father was like unto hers. Lucy was but fourteen years old when she lost her mother, but even at that early age she had reached her full stature, and was distinguished by a look of thoughtful ness and reżection beyond her years. But there was no pedantry in her thoughtfulness, there was no affects tion in her gravity. Long indeed before she could know the meaning of sorrow, and when as yet she had shed only the tears of childhood, her look was staid and placid, and that with such a marked expression of sobriety, that a stranger by a passing glance could not but be struck with the interesting aspect of the child. She was thoughtful, not bv aż'ectation, not by means of sorrow, but by mere instinct. She used to look grave among her playthings, but not to sigh, for there was a pleasant calmness in the depths of her Spirit, and her look of sedateness was but the manifestation of her deep joy, - her unrużled gladness in being. That, however, which most of all excited her father's pride, and drew his heart towards her with an almost re verenes of love and affection, was the clear honesty of her countenance, exhibiting the profound simplicity of her heart. Nothing could exceed her utter ingenu. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
