Paul Getty bought his first classical antiquity - a small terracotta sculpture - at auction in London in 1939. Over the next four decades, he became a passionate collector, and in the 1950s he created a trust for "the diffusion of artistic and general knowledge". Building on that early foundation, successive antiquities curators at the Getty Museum have amassed a collection that contains more than 50,000 ancient objects. In prose accompanied by a colour photograph of each object, this handbook of the Antiquities Collection presents nearly 200 of the Getty Museum's most important pieces, including J. Paul Getty's most prized possession, the "Lansdowne Herakles". Spanning thousands of years - from pre-classical times as far back as the third millennium BC through the 3rd century AD - the Getty Antiquities Collection encompasses the Cycladic, Greek, Etruscan, South Italian, Roman and Romano-Egyptian cultures. It includes ancient Greek vases; monumental marble sculptures and diminutive bronzes; Greek and Roman gems; and Hellenistic silverware, jewellery and glass. The handbook includes a foreword by museum director Deborah Gribbon and an introduction tracing the history of the collection by antiquities curator Marion True.

Summary Catalogue of European Decorative Arts in the J. Paul Getty Museum J. Paul Getty Museum

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

J. Paul Getty had a passion for the exquisitely made furniture and decorative objects of eighteenth-century France, which he began collecting in the 1930s. Gillian Wilson, curator of decorative arts since 1971, has broadened and strengthened the collection, adding Boulle furniture, mounted oriental porcelain, tapestries, clocks, ceramics, and more. In the 1980s and 1990s the Museum continued to enlarge its decorative arts holdings, creating a European sculpture department in 1984 and adding glass, maiolica, goldsmiths' work, pietre dure, and furniture from Italy and Northern Europe. This book is a revised and expanded edition of Decorative Arts: An Illustrated Summary Catalogue of the Collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum (1993). In addition to more than forty recent acquisitions--among these four wall sconces from Versailles that once belonged to Marie Antoinette and an elaborate upholstered bed from the collection of Karl Lagerfeld--it includes the results of years of research. Designed for scholars, students, and devotees of the decorative arts, this volume provides a comprehensive look at the Getty's fine collection.

When the prolific British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) died at the age of 76, his contemporaries held a generally negative view of his recent work, describing it as indulgent, eccentric, and even repulsive. But over the past century, a number of curators and critics have reassessed Turner's late paintings. Instead of finding his employment of shimmering color to evoke light unpleasant or unskilled, they have seen it as a precursor to the Impressionists and consider his use of abstraction to be distinctly modern. In this elegantly conceived volume, leading experts on Turner consider these contrasting views of the artist in a groundbreaking exploration of his paintings. They examine his notes and sketchbooks to determine whether his health may have impacted his art and how Victorian views of old age influenced perceptions of the elderly artist. They also question the notion that Turner's late work articulated a conclusive, radical vision heedless of public reaction, for evidence makes clear that he had a firm idea of the art market in his day. Fully illustrated in color, this book is published on the occasion of an exhibition on view at the Tate Britain, London, from September 15, 2014, through January 18, 2015; at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 24 through May 24, 2015; and at the de Young Museum in San Francisco from June 20 through September 20, 2015.

Hill and Adamson J. Paul Getty Museum

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Shortly after the dawn of photography, the unlikely partnership between the respected painter David Octavius Hill and the young engineer Robert Adamson produced some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium. Their alliance began when Hill, while working on his large commemorative painting of the people involved in forming the Free Chruch of Scotland in 1843, began using photography as a tool to document the church elders. What followed was a four-and-a-half-year partnership - cut short by Adamson's untimely death in 1848 - that produced a large body of work. During their association Hill and Adamson experimented with some of the earliest calotype processes creating hundreds of portraits, staged dramatic photographs, and architectural and landscape images. The Getty Museum holds more than 400 works by Hill and Adamson, 47 of which are featured in this volume. The plates are accompanied by commentary from Anne M. Lyden, curatorial assistant in the Department of Photographs at the Museum. A colour foldout of Hill's above-referenced painting "The Signing of the Deed of Demission (The Disruption Picture)" appears in the back of the book. The book includes a chronology of the key events of the artists' partnership and an edited transcript of a colloquium on the artists, with participants: Lyden; Weston Naef, curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum; Sara Stevenson, curator of photographs at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; Alison Morrison-Low, curator, History of Science Section, National Museums of Scotland; Jonathon Reff, photographer, Los Angeles; Michael Wilson, private collector, Los Angeles and London; and David Featherstone, independent editor and curator, San Francisco.

This catalogue documents a major exhibition at the Getty Villa that is the first ever to focus on ancient Athenian terracotta vases made by techniques other than the well-known black- and red-figure styles. The exhibition comprises vases executed in bilingual, coral-red gloss, outline, Kerch-style, white ground, and Six's technique, as well as examples with added clay and gilding, and plastic vases and additions. "The Colors of Clay" opens with an introductory essay that integrates the diverse themes of the exhibition and sets them within the context of vase making in general; a second essay discusses conservation issues related to several of the techniques. A detailed discussion of the techniques featured in the exhibition precedes each section of the catalogue. More than a hundred vases from museums in the United States and Europe are described in depth. This series is written by: J. Paul Getty Museum. It accompanies a major exhibition at the reopened Getty Villa.

Conserving Outdoor Sculpture Getty Conservation Institute,US

This is a comprehensive and superbly illustrated account of the Getty Museum's research into outdoor sculpture conservation. When the J. Paul Getty Museum received twenty-eight sculptures created by a who's who of twentieth-century artists, it took on the responsibility for their preservation, interpretation, and long-term stewardship. Donated from the private collection of the late film producer Ray Stark and his wife, Fran, the sculptures thrust the Getty into the evolving field of outdoor sculpture conservation. To honour its responsibility, the Museum embarked on new research into the collection's materials - bronze, lead, ceramic, and painted metal - and construction techniques. This book presents the conservators' comprehensive account of the process. Chapters are organized around phases of the project rather than individual sculptures and address key issues facing anyone charged with caring for works of art displayed outdoors, including: organization and planning; installation and grounds management; scientific analyses; collaborating with artists; structural issues; mounts, paint, coatings, and patinas; and, long-term maintenance.

Departures J. Paul Getty Museum

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Departures chronicles the exhibition of specially commissioned works produced by eleven acclaimed artists as each responds to an object in the Getty Museum. Using the Getty collections as a point of departure, the artists create new works spanning a broad spectrum of media including painting, sculpture, photography, film, and video. Conceptual artist John Baldessari enlarges Albrecht Durer's diminutive drawing tag Beetle (1505) to a mural held in place by a gigantic specimen pin, while ceramicist Adrian Saxe creates a porcelain and stoneware centerpiece designed especially for an eighteenth-century French table in the collection. Other participating artists include Uta Barth, Sharon Ellis, Judy Fiskin, Martin Kersels, John M. Miller, Ruben Ortiz-Torres, Lari Pittman, Stephen Prina, and Alison Saar. Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Getty Museum from February 29 through May 7, 2000, this book provides a rare glimpse at these artists, including their past work, the objects they created for this unusual exhibition, and their studios. Essays on each artist's commissioned work along with Grant Mumford's photographs of the artists and the artwok provide a thought-provoking exploration of the potent and surprising ways in which the art of the past can inform the art of today.
