ROLF DIETER BRINKMANN was born in Vechta, Germany, in 1940, in the midst of World War II, and died in 1975, in London, England, after being struck by a hit-and-run driver. During his lifetime, Brinkmann published nine poetry collections, four short story collections, several radio plays, and a highly acclaimed novel. He also edited and translated two important German-language anthologies of contemporary American poetry (primarily Beat and New York School, for which Brinkmann had a particular affinity), and translated Frank O'Hara's Lunch Poems into German, as well as a collection of poems by Ted Berrigan, entitled Guillaume Apollinaire ist Tot. In May, 1975, just a few weeks after his death, Brinkmann's seminal, parameter-expanding poetry collection Westwärts 1 & 2 appeared, which was posthumously awarded the prestigious Petrarca Prize. | ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: MARK TERRILL shipped out of San Francisco as a merchant seaman to the Far East and beyond, studied and spent time with Paul Bowles in Tangier, Morocco, and has lived in Germany since 1984, where he's worked as a shipyard welder, road manager for rock bands, cook and postal worker. Spread over nine CDs, this release represents a treasure trove of works by Dvorák, dedicated to and featuring the best of his orchestral music. The composer stands as the most popular of the Czech nationalist movement, one who despite German influences (Dvorák counted Brahms and Wagner among his inspirations) became a byword in the assimilation of folk roots into serious musical composition. Not only did he use existing melodies, but he composed his own folk-based themes too.Apart from the nine symphonies, which of course include the enduringly popular 'New World', written during the composer's sojourn in America, the compilation also features a series of overtures (such as the famous Carnival Overture, an exuberant celebration of human life at its best), tone poems (A Hero's Song, which is a sort of Czech equivalent to Strauss's somewhat later Ein Heldenleben, and four gruesome folk ballads which represent the composer's Indian Summer, among others), the famous Czech Suite which has a Mozart Serenade quality about it, and the two sets of Slavonic Dances -- the first of which represents a tribute from the younger composer to Brahms's own Hungarian Dances and firmly established Dvorák as a leader of the new Czech national school.Performing these works is a trio of great ensembles: the Staatskapelle Berlin under their esteemed director of 26 years, Otmar Suitner; The Janácek Philharmonic Orchestra -- natural experts in this type of repertoire; and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, performing under the baton of John Farrer. The edition is an excellent addition to the Brilliant Classics orchestral catalogue and records a crucial facet of the output of one of Europe's most famous composers.Other information:- Recorded in 1979--2004.- An excellent bargain set in the best Brilliant Classics tradition: the complete symphonies, symphonic poems, overtures and Slavonic Dances of Antonin Dvorák.- The set contains all the symphonic works which made Dvorak one of the best and universally loved romantic composers (and who knew how to write a good tune!): the 9-th symphony "From the New World" (one of the most popular symphonies ever written), the charming Czech Suite, haunting symphonic poems (Noon Witch, the Water Goblin) and the exhilarating complete Slavonic Dances. Music pouring from a warm and fiercely beating heart, in which the folklore music of Dvorák's home country is never far away.- Excellent performances by the Berlin Staatskapelle/Otmar Suitner, the Janacek Philharmonic/Theodore Kuchar and the Royal Philharmonic/John Farrer.- Contains notes on the composer and the music.

Greek Lyric LOEB

The most important poets writing in Greek in the sixth century BCE came from Sicily and southern Italy. Stesichorus was called by ancient writers "most Homeric"a recognition of his epic themes and noble style. He composed verses about the Trojan War and its aftermath, the Argonauts, the adventures of Heracles. He may have been a solo singer, performing these poems to his own cithara accompaniment. Ibycus probably belonged to the colony of Rhegium in southwestern Italy. Like Stesichorus he wrote lyrical narratives on mythological themes, but he also composed erotic poems. Simonides is said to have spent his later years in Sicily. He was in Athens at the time of the Persian Wars, though, and was acclaimed for his epitaph on the Athenians who died at Marathon. He was a successful poet in various genres, including victory odes, dirges, and dithyrambic poetry. The power of his pathos emerges in the fragments we have. All the extant verse of these poets is given in this third volume of David Campbell's edition of Greek lyric poetry, along with the ancients' accounts of their lives and works. Ten contemporary poets are also included, among them Arion, Lasus, and Pratinas. The Greek Lyric edition is five volumes. Sappho and Alcaeus the illustrious singers of sixth-century Lesbosare in the first volume. Volume II contains the work of Anacreon, composer of solo song; the "Anacreontea;" and the earliest writers of choral poetry, notably the seventh-century Spartans Alcman and Terpander. Bacchylides and other fifth-century poets are in Volume IV along with Corinna (although some argue that she belongs to the third century). The last volume includes the new school of dithyrambic poets (mid-fifth to mid-fourth century), together with the anonymous poems: drinking songs, children's songs, cult hymns, and others.

Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933) is now widely viewed as Japan's greatest poet of the 20th century. Little known in his lifetime, he died at 37 from tuberculosis, but has since become a much loved children's author whose magical tales have been translated into many languages, adapted for the stage and turned into films and animations. Recognition for his poetry came much later. "Strong in the Rain" - the title-poem of this selection - is now arguably the most memorised and quoted modern poem in Japan. Both intensely lyrical and permeated with a sophisticated scientific understanding of the universe, Kenji Miyazawa's poems testify to his deep love of humanity and nature. From a young age, he was fascinated by plants, insects, and especially minerals, which he collected. At school, his interest in nature deepened, and he began poring through books on philosophy and Buddhism, which were to strongly influence his later writing. Miyazawa drew on nature in a way that no modern Japanese author had before him. Where other writers tended to use it as a springboard for their own meditations, he saw himself not just as nature's faithful chronicler and recorder but as its medium: light, wind and rain are processed through him before being recreated on the page. His mode of active engagement with nature set him apart from virtually all other Japanese poets, and led to his work being largely ignored by the Bundan (the literary establishment) and misunderstood for half a century. But in the 1990s, he received unprecedented attention in the Japanese media. The compassion, empathy and closeness to nature expressed in Kenji Miyazawa's poems and tales appealed strongly to a new generation of readers.

William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) was a poet, novelist and historian from the American South whose novels achieved great prominence during the 19th century, with Edgar Allan Poe pronouncing him the best novelist America had ever produced. He first wrote poetry at the age of eight, and in his 19th year he produced a monody on Gen. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1825). Two years later, in 1827, Lyrical and Other Poems and Early Lays appeared. He then published Tile Vision of Cones, Cain and Other Poems (1829), The Tricolor; or, Three Days of Blood in Paris (1830) and his strongest poem, Atalantis: A Tale of the Sea (1832). His novel Martin Faber, an expanded version of an earlier short story called The Confessions of a Murderer, was published in 1833 and made Simms known to a national audience. He was one of the best, and most respected, historians of his day. His History of South Carolina (1842) served for several generations as the standard school textbook on the state's history. Other works include: The Yemassee (1835), Vasconselos (1853) and The Cassique of Kiawah (1859).

Bacchylides, nephew of Simonides and rival of Pindar, wrote choral poetry of many types. We have a number of his victory odespoems celebrating victories in athletic contestsas well as dithyrambs and other hymns. He was a master of the captivating narrative. Also represented in this volume is the Boeotian Corinna, whose work, versions of local myths, survives in greater quantity than that of any other Greek woman poet except Sappho. Ancient authorities regarded Corinna as an older contemporary and mentor of Pindar; but some modern scholars place her later, in the third century BCE. Other women are here too: Myrtis, also from Boeotia; Telesilla of Argos, famous for her military leadership as well as her hymns; the shadowy Charixena; and Praxilla of Sicyon, author of choral poems and drinking songs. David Campbell gives all the extant verse of these poets, along with the ancients' accounts of their lives and works. This fourth volume of his much-praised edition of Greek lyric poetry also includes Timocreon of Rhodes, pentathlete and writer of invective; Diagoras of Melos, choral poet and alleged atheist; and Ion of Chios. Sophocles is represented by fragments of his paean "Asclepius," Euripides by the few surviving lines of his ode for Alcibiades' dazzling victory in the chariot race at Olympia. This is the fourth in a five-volume edition of Greek lyric poets. Sappho and Alcaeus, the illustrious singers of sixth-century Lesbos, are in the first. Volume II contains the work of Anacreon, composer of solo song; the "Anacreontea"; and the earliest writers of choral poetry, notably the seventh-century Spartans Alcman and Terpander. Stesichorus, Ibycus, Simonides, and other sixth-century poets are in Volume III. The last volume includes the new school of dithyrambic poets (mid-fifth to mid-fourth century), together with the anonymous poems: drinking songs, children's songs, cult hymns, and others.

This volume begins with Orwell's letters home from St. Cyprian's Preparatory School from the age of eight. Orwell illustrated many of these letters and the edition reproduces his simple but charming drawings. Whilst at Eton he contributed to several college publications and these, with several of his early stories, are printed here. It was also a time when he wrote poetry and all the poems of these years are included. Whilst in Burma he wrote sketches and draft that were lead to Burmese Days; all are now published here. Reprinted for the first time since their publication in Paris in 1928 - 1929, and now with English translations, are the articles he wrote to expose the sufferings of the unemployed, tramps and beggars, the imperialist exploitation of other people, a literary essay and an essay on censorship, all of which would be centres of concern for Orwell throughout his life. In 1930 Orwell had published the first of his 379 reviews of some 700 books, plays and films. In 1931 'A Hanging', the first of his most important essays, was published. The volume includes the text of his school play, King Charles II, which features (as Charles 1) in A Clergyman's Daughter.

Excerpt from Verzeichniss Der Von Ferdinand Freiligrath Nachgelassenen Bibliothek, Besonders Reichhaltig in Der Deutschen Und Englischen Classischen Literatur: Welche Am Dienstag Den 18. Juni 1878 Und an Den Folgenden Tagen, Vormittags 8-12 Und Nachmittags 3-5 Uhr, Durch Oskar Gerschel's Antiquariats-Buchhandlung (Stuttgart, Schloss-Strasse 37) Zu Cannstatt in Der Wohnung Des Dichters Ferdinand Freiligrath's name is not an unfamiliar one in England. As early as the year 1840 translations appeared from his poems, and the English press took notice of the poet, who in his own country, a few years previously, had rapidly made a name for himself, and was classed already among the most popular modern lyric bards. Tait's Magazine, the Athenaeum, Northern Star, The People's Journal, Howitt's Journal, and other papers of that period, brought translations, and more or less detailed biographical and critical articles 011 the life and works of an author, whose destiny ultimately linked him more with England and the English nation, than any other German poet before him. Born at Detmold in 1810 the son of a public teacher, he was destined by his father for commerce despite the unusual capacities and eagerness for learning, early displayed by him, and which seemed to point clearly to a student's career. Butpecuniary considerations prevailed, for an unmarried uncle at Edinburgh, who was supposed a wealthy man by his relations in the small German capital, offered to adopt him and to leave him his pro perty, if brought up for business life. This decided the question, and young Freiligrath, much to his regret left the Grammar School at Detmold at the age of fifteen, and was bound apprentice to his uncle at Soest in Westfalia. Long before this apprenticeship had expired, the Edinburgh uncle, together with his commercial concern and all the prospects connected with it, dis appeared like any Fata Morgana of his own future imaginings. The only real gain derived from this expectation by the young poet, was the acquire ment of English and other modern languages, which had been cultivated by him with the utmost zeal, and which at once opened to him the literature of different nations. No sooner was he master of the language, than he began to reproduce French, Italian and English Poetry into German, mani festing even at that tender age a power of identification, and a mastership over the German language, which soon was to secure him a prominent place among the classical translators of his country. But it was the English literature which took hold of his mind before all others, and the prospect of living in the country of Ossian, Burns and Scott, principally had recon ciled him to a career which was otherwise utterly uncongenial to his taste and the bent of his mind. Through his masterly interpretations the songs of Burns, Moore, Scott, Southey, Coleridge, Campbell, and later, Tennyson, Hemans, Mary Howitt, L. E. L., Longfellow, Bryant, Barry Cornwall, Monckton Milnes, Browning and others, became popular in Germany, and many of them household words. Children for the Union Ivan R Dee, Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Civil War influenced virtually every aspect of children's lives, and in turn they eagerly incorporated the experience of war into their daily assumptions and activities. In this new contribution to the American Childhoods series, James A. Marten places the experiences of children living in the North during the Civil War into the larger contexts of economic, political, and cultural developments during the nineteenth century. On the home front, children became almost full-fledged members of their communities in their support of the war effort. They left school to replace absent men on farms and in factories, helped raise funds for hospitals and other soldiers' causes, and volunteered to knit socks, pick lint, and perform other necessary duties. Even as families were torn apart by the war, Mr. Marten notes, family ties grew stronger as Union soldiers filled their letters with love and advice for their children. He shows how the war brought writers for children to challenge the pacifism reflected in antebellum literature and instead to promote controversial political viewpoints such as abolitionism and to support the Union's military action. Indeed, Northern children's lives were militarized as never before, from the toys and games and stories that were overwhelmed by images of warfare and pro-Union ideals to actual military service by under-age soldiers and drummer boys. Both heroes and casualties, drummer boys in fact became potent symbols of the Northern war effort and the subject of countless poems and articles, at least temporarily altering perceptions of proper roles for children and youth in American society. As adults looking back, Northern children saw the war as a great adventure or a turning point in their lives. Some mourned lost fathers or relatives; others mourned lost childhoods. Children for the Union opens a new window on the impact of the war and shows that the youngest Americans were inevitable and enthusiastic participants in the nation's worst crisis. Abundantly illustrated.
