Arab Medicine And Surgery - A Study Of The Healing Art In Algeria Read Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

PREFACE IT is with the greatest diffidence that I lay this little work before students of the History of Surgery, Medicine, and Pharmacology. A layman-totally untrained in medical science-I suddenly found myself in 1913 admitted to some of the secrets of the reticent Rerber and Arab doctors of the Aures Massif, Algeria. It is my misfortune that I lacked the knowledge necessary to enable me to do justice to the opportunities of studying their art which I have enjoyed. But for the kindly interest taken in my work by the late Sir William Osler I should not have ventured to publish these notes at all. In the circumstances all that I can attempt in the following pages is to describe as I have seen it the life and work of the practitioners of the remote valleys of the Aures Mountains and, when dealing mith their operations and methods of treatment, to act as the mouthpiece of the native doctors themselves. I wish to offer my heartiest thanks to the authorities at the Herbarium at Kew and at the Botanical Gardens, Oxford to Professor E. B. Poulton and Mr. E. W. Holmes, for the care mith which they have determined for me the materia medica I have collected. To the Council of the Royal Society of Medi- cine and of the Royal Anthropological Institute for allowing me to reproduce, in a form amplified as a result of later inquiries in the field, material which I have already dealt with in their Proceedings and Journal the Council of the former Society having kindly permitted me to use again the photograph of a splint Pl. VI, 6 which appeared in the Poceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine, 1920, vol. xiii and to Professor J. A. Gunn and Dr. Charles Singer for much advice and kindly criticism. To Mr. Henry Balfour, Curator of the Pitt-Rivers Museum, Oxford, I am indebted not merely for permission to publish many illustrations of instruments now in that Museum, but also for his never-failing encouragement, without which I should probably never have commenced the, to me, fascinating study of Shawiya ethnography at all. Finally, to the French Government, and to all its officers and officials with whom I have come into contact in Algeria, I desire to express my deep sense of gratitude for all the facilities, kindness, and hospitality which my wife and I have ever received at their hands. Science and Art of Riding in Lightness BERTRAMS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A biomechanical problem-solving approach to training challenges. Every action of rider has an impact on the health and well-being of the horse either positive or negative, looseness or tension. But what are the causes? The Science and Art of Riding with Lightness reveals the interplay between the biomechanics of the horse and the dressage exercises in a coherent manner. It will become clear which training mistakes cause which problems in the horse's way of going and which training and the physical-therapeutic measures that can be taken to correct problems. With this knowledge, the vet can assess and treat problems in an appropriate manner and advise the rider more fittingly with regard to the training of the horse. Likewise, the dedicated rider can find valuable supportive suggestions and ideas in the training and correction of his horse, from Dr. Stodulka's unique gift of being both a master rider, and equine vet well verse in allopathic medicine and alternative therapies. With this knowledge, the veterinarian will be able to assess training-induced disorders and to recommend better and more successful therapies and advise the rider with a view to training optimization. Small errors often have huge consequences. Only the rider who knows what they are can rectify them. "I have read many teachings of riding. This health-giving route to riding is one of the best and easiest to understand for young and old, professional or amateur. It should be compulsory reading for veterinarians and horse lovers. Both the horse and the rider should be in a position, physically and mentally, to understand what is demanded of them. Dr. Stodulka has understood this, and managed to immortalize his knowledge and experience in this book." - Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg

Language of Medicine Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Language of Medicine: A Manual Giving the Origin, Etymology, Pronunciation, and Meaning of the Technical Terms Found in Medical Literature The object of this work is to provide the medical student with a suitable means of acquiring the vocabulary of his science. Like Shakespeare, the great majority of medical students have but "small Latine and lesse Greeke." Even those who have enjoyed the advantages of literary colleges are often unable to apply their knowledge of the classical languages in determining the etymology and meaning of ordinary medical words, partly because the classics are studied more from a literary than a philological point of view, but largely because the words most used in medical works seldom appear in the Latin and Greek with which they are familiar. In studying mathematics or grammar the pupil begins with definitions of the new words to be employed. In medicine, also, much valuable time could be saved if the student would first master the meaning of the technical terms by which the principles of the science are to be carried into his mind. The words must be understood before thoughts which they convey can be comprehended. In the first part of this work are discussed many of the elementary principles of philology and etymology, illustrated by common words occurring in medical literature. Coleridge has said that we may often derive more useful knowledge from the history of a word than from the history of a campaign. In medicine we may often obtain more practical benefit from the study of some word with an account of the errors involved therein, than from the study of a new theory which rises like a balloon only to burst like a bubble. Mitochondrial medicine deals with diseases that are related to mitochondrial dysfunction due to a number of causes from free radical damage to genetic mutation. A primary feature of mitochondrial dysfunction is impaired cellular bioenergetics.§This book is based upon extensive data gathered over 30 years of clinical and experimental research. Internationally recognized authors share their experience and state-of-the-art knowledge in various fields of their expertise such as mitochondrial cardiology, neurology, diabetology, nephrology, immunology, rheumatology, reproductive medicine, sports medicine, and chronobiology, and guide readers through the disease process, from basic biochemical mechanisms to diagnosis to therapeutic aspects.§Laboratory evaluation plays a very important role in the diagnosis of mitochondrial diseases, in addition to clinical assessment. This includes analysis of plasma/mitochondrial coenzyme Q10 content, mitochondrial respiratory chain function and oxidative phosphorylation in isolated mitochondria and biopsy material, and nuclear magnetic resonance methods.§In addition to standard medical therapy to treat cardiac, CNS, and other involvements in the mitochondrial disease patients, adjunctive nutritional therapy is indicated primarily to improve mitochondrial function. Therapy include coenzyme Q10, a -lipoic acid, carnitine, w -3- and w -6-PUFA, vitamins and polarized light.§Mitochondrial Medicine is dedicated to Dr. Frederick L. Crane, discoverer of Coenzyme Q10 in 1957, and to the Celebration of 50th year of Coenzyme Q10 discovery.§This book is intended for general medical practitioners, for specialists specialists such as cardiologists, neurologists, and diabetologists, biochemists, nutritionists, pharmacists, and also for graduate students.

Relation of Medicine to Philosophy (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from The Relation of Medicine to Philosophy That the progress of medical science has enor mously reduced the death-rate no one can possibly deny. The cry occasionally 'heard, that there is a vast increase in diseases which were never heard of before, is purely absurd; this increase of disease is merely increase in the differentiation of disease. Because at one time the word fever served to cover almost every affection in which the pulse and respiration were quickened and the skin hot, the sum total of disease has not been increased by giving different names to the various fevers. To take a more techni cal instance, the disease of the nervous system called Disseminated Sclerosis will almost undoubtedly be divided up with increasing knowledge into several diseases of the spinal cord, but the sum total of diseases will not be larger. There is, however, just this much truth in the outcry, that as man's life has become more complex with advancing civilisation, so the possibility of minor oscillations from complete adjustment to the environment becomes increasingly great; it is more difficult to be perfectly healthy, because a higher standard of health is required by modern life. This is particularly seen in the case of insanity for civilisation, by increasing the number of social and moral rules to be observed, increases the possibility of their infraction.
